Peter and the Starcatcher 5
WELCOME
Bill writes: I would like to dedicate
this run of Peter and the Starcatcher
to a man who has a special place in
the history of the Arts Club Theatre
Company. Leon Bibb passed on
October 23 of this year, much to our
sorrow. I first heard Leon’s voice when
I appeared at the back of the Seymour
Street stage entering from the alley. He
was on-stage in rehearsal singing ‘Ports
of Amsterdam’ from Jacques Brel is Alive
and Well and Living in Paris. I had never
heard him sing and I was stunned
by his extraordinary power, his vocal
agility, and the warmth of his voice. I
knew right then that Jacques Brel would
be a special piece of music theatre. And
it was. For many in Vancouver, that was
a time when they discovered the Arts
Club, up the stairs at Seymour Street,
and we could never have changed and
grown into the local company where
you find yourself watching a show in
this new theatre space without that
seminal event.
Peter and Bill write: We are excited
to welcome you to the Arts Club’s
newest venue, the Goldcorp Stage
at the BMO Theatre Centre. It’s a
breathtaking new space and we are
so excited to finally be able to open
its doors. Thank you to our partners
at Bard on the Beach. Thank you to
BMO, Goldcorp, Industrial Alliance, the
6 Peter and the Starcatcher
Department of Canadian Heritage, the
Government of British Columbia, and
the City of Vancouver for your generous
support of this project. And thank
you to the many individual donors
without whose financial support and
substantial donations we would not be
here. You too can support us! Please
consider donating to the Arts Club
this Christmas, or participating in our
Holiday Campaign, and know that what
you give helps us train youth, develop
playwrights, and keep artists employed
in this community, where they belong.
The production also showcases the
incredible work of our production staff
many of whom are listed at the back of
the programme—thank you. And thank
you to all our other dedicated and
talented staff who have spent all year
in the service of the great work the Arts
Club does. Thank you to our donors
for their support of Arts Club activities
that could not exist without them.
Thanks to our board for the volunteer
hours they put it on our behalf, and a
special thanks to our outgoing board
president, Ross Paul, whose passion
for the theatre is boundless and whose
work on our behalf is tireless. And
thank you to you: for being here, sitting
as one in our theatre, embracing our
performers and our shows. It means a
lot. To us all.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Parmida Zarrinkamar, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
“Supposing all these planks and ropes are
now the British Empire”
So asks the character Smee, as she
requests the audience to imagine the
set. Not to say that Lauchlin Johnston,
our set designer, hasn’t provided us
with an excellent playing space. He
intentionally left areas bare. However,
you will see frigates, merchant ships,
and sea battles. Likewise, Carmen
Alatorre, our costume designer,
purposely under-dressed actors. Yet,
you will see sea captains, tropical
kings, and pirates in their full regalia.
Peter and the Starcatcher is truly a
remarkable play because it depends
so much on you to participate with an
active imagination. The actors play a
multitude of characters, sometimes
switching characters before your eyes,
and other times actors are incorporated
directly into the scenery as props.
The creators of this play cleverly
designed the show so that the actors
provide the key elements, and then
your imagination pretends the rest,
often with staggering creative results.
Basically, this show uses the same part
of the brain that children use when they
play. And no matter how old you are, or
how rusty you may be at “playing”, that
part of your brain, just like Peter Pan,
never grows old!
The Arts Club could not have picked
a more theatrical play to open a new
theatre. I’d like to thank Bill, the Arts
Club, and this amazing collective
of artists, designers and crew who
assembled this production. We hope
you enjoy our show!
—David Mackay
