VILLAGE VOICE ISSUE 15, NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 ⋄ DISTRIBUTED FREE THROUGHOUT GLEN EDEN Tidy Town Day was a huge success! MORE THAN 150 people took to the streets for Glen Eden’s first Tidy Town Day on Sunday 2 November. With a visible sense of adventure, pride and camaraderie, they cleaned, painted, planted, mulched, collected, dumped and swept. Already there is talk about holding it annually. Mayor Len Brown enthusiastically supported Tidy Town Day by planting and mulching – despite a 5km morning jog as part of the Auckland Marathon! “This great day wouldn’t have happened without the support of the Trust Community Foundation and Waitakere Ranges Local Board,” said Glen Eden Business Association Manager, Jennifer Conlon.“All these wonderful people really took Glen Eden by storm and had a productive and powerful day. At the end of the day, pleasantly exhausted, I felt safe in the knowledge that communities really do have power and that together we can achieve miracles.” Our thanks to: All those individuals and groups that came out in such big numbers; Local Board members, especially Steve Tollestrup for helping organise the day; Chemwash Glen Eden; the Iglesia Ni Cristo Church; the Filipino Katilingban G Bisaya Sa NZ; the three young girls who were there all day; Janet Clews and Betty; landscapers Tony and Dave from Academy Landscapes and Irvin Landscapes; Mike and Kerry from Mike The Painter Ltd; Placemakers New Lynn; Gordons Nurseries; Me & Mrs Jones; Hollings Pharmacy; Barfoot & Thompson Glen Eden; Merlane from Amcal Pharmacy;ANZ;The Mad Butcher Glen Eden; Fresh Choice Glen Eden; Hammer Hardware Glen Eden; Glen Eden Landscapes Supplies; Four Square Glen Eden; Radiant Café; City Parks; Auckland Council Parks; Project Twin Streams; Eco Matters Trust; Keep Waitakere Beautiful. Apologies if we’ve missed anyone. – Glen Eden Business Association RUNNING A BUSY PET SHOP HAS ITS LIGHTER SIDE MEET THE LOCALS ! One branch but they have deep local roots !HUSBAND AND WIFE team Ian and Sharon have run Pet Shop Boyz since July 1999 and are very much a part of the local community.! Running a shop is not a nine-to-five affair. A typical working week for this busy couple usually involves ten-hour days, six days a week, plus a couple of hours on Sundays.! Ian and Sharon were founding members of the Glen Eden Protection Society, which was formed to fight the closure of the 3 Guys Supermarket in 2000. ! Then in 2002, they were founding members of the Glen Eden Business Association, which in 2009 became the Glen Eden Business Improvement District Association. ! Ian chaired the Business Association for 12 years, resigning at the recent AGM to free up some much-needed time for other activities. (The job was taken on by David Armstrong, the manager of Barfoot & Thompson, whom The Voice profiled in issue 12.)! Predictably for a small family business, competing against chain stores and online shopping is a major challenge. What Ian and Sharon can offer is personal, friendly service and honest advice along with good quality products, some of which are unique to Pet Shop Boyz.! They take pleasure in having their customers keep coming back The friendly family at Pet Shop Boyz: Sharon and Ian and their daughter Chanel knowing they are happy with the service they receive. ! A pet shop is the kind of business where customer requests can get a little odd. They are often asked if they can get hamsters, but these endearing creatures are simply not available in New Zealand.! The couple babysat a pet mynah bird on one occasion, which went okay. But agreeing to sell on behalf of a client a cockatoo in a cage turned out to be not such a good idea. ! “Within a day of its arrival we had complaints from people as far away as 100 metres about it being too noisy,” said Ian. “It went back to its owner!”! At Christmas they stock tadpoles, which one small child last year amusingly misnamed tampons.! Sharon was a founding member of the Women’s Support Line 28 years ago (set up to offer support for women in violent relationships), a founding member of the NZ Lop Rabbit Society, a member of the Rabbit Council of NZ and a member of Auckland Cat Club. The couple are also former members of the NZ Greyhound Racing Association.! Sharon has lived in Glen Eden since 1956 when Mervyn, her father, built their family home in Glengarry Road. Also community-minded, he was a founding member of the Glen Eden Volunteer Fire Brigade. ! Some scenes from the movie Broken Hallelujah were filmed in Glen Eden. One was filmed in Ian and Sharon’s shop – the couple are listed in the credits. The producers of the movie, Alastair and Vanessa Riddell, are customers and friends, and were both guest judges for the Glen Eden Art On The Street competition. Keep an eye open for floaters and flashes FLOATERS (or spots) are those blobs you sometimes see across your vision. ! They are the result of particles and impurities within the vitreous (the clear gel-like substance that fills the inside of your eyeball) casting shadows on the retina. ! Floaters can be annoying but are mostly harmless. ! However, they may be indicative of eye disease or other health conditions and should be checked out by your optometrist.! “Floaters are commonly observed and usually normal,” explains Glen Eden optometrist Nigel Somerville, “but in around 10-20% of cases the sudden development of floaters may indicate a more serious eye problem. your optometrist immediately.”! What about flashing lights? Whether you are young or old, an urgent eye examination is necessary if flashing lights suddenly occur. In 10-20% of cases, flashes may be an early sign of serious eye disease.! If it is found that the floaters or flashing lights are causing changes to the eye that could threaten your sight, your optometrist can arrange speedy assessment and management Floaters can look something like this by an eye specialist. They have a If you get an increase in floaters, vivid variety of treatments available to flashing lights, a curtain-like shadow them including laser treatment and or a large black or red cobweb-like surgery to repair the problem and image appears, you should go and see ensure you keep your precious sight. ! ! Committing someone to caring for a live animal for ten or 20 years is not something to do on impulse. Consider these factors:! • The holidays are crazy enough! The last thing most households need is a new animal to add to the stress and commotion. Nor does the creature deserve to be introduced to a new, maybe scary environment in the midst of chaos.! • Pets should not be surprises! The recipient may be excited about a new puppy or kitten, but unless the “surprise” has been well planned, it can be risky. It is best to let the prospective pet owner, no matter what age, be involved every step of the way in selecting a new pet.! • A pet for a child shouldn’t be seen as a new toy! Caring for a dog or cat is a big responsibility and very different to getting a new toy that is taken out, played with, and put away again. It’s important to impress upon a child the difference.! Wait until the holidays are over and plan a visit to your local breeder, pet shop, shelter or rescue organisation. Library celebrates ten years GLEN EDEN Library opened its doors on October 5, 2004. ! To celebrate the 10th anniversary, and to coincide with Heritage Month, there was a photographic display of the history of the progress towards this purpose-built facility. ! Glen Eden’s first library dated from 1928 and was next to the railway station. Eight other sites were used over the years, including a room in the current Playhouse Theatre.! Raewynn Robertson, the Local History Librarian, gave a presentation Glen Eden has huge potential. It is already a busy retail centre, ideally located beside the rail station, with banks, theatre, doctors and dentists, library — everything a town centre should be. And yet it could be more. House prices are on the rise as people recognise Glen Eden as a desirable place to live. Newcomers will look for attractive places to gather, meet and eat. Glen Eden can evolve to provide these and the Local Board can support this. The Local Board applauds the initiative of the Glen Eden Business Improvement District in organising a of heritage images of Glen Eden from West Auckland Research Centre’s photographic collection. A holiday storytime with lollies and cupcakes was enjoyed by 60 people. Chocolate cake, lollies and balloons contributed to an enjoyable day for staff and visitors at the library. Tidy Town clean-up for 2 November. It supported this with funds and you saw us there with scrubbing brushes and buckets. We have also supported the annual Christmas Parade, and are planning a Christmas Movie Night with fun activities for the kids. The Waitakere Ranges Local Board looks forward to supporting the people of Glen Eden as we move into 2015. ! Sandra Coney, Chair See double this summer.
