I hope that the New Year has started off well for you. The Holiday Party at Shelter Point Resort & Marina was a HUGE success! I received many e-mails and phone calls recounting how much fun various members had. The venue, food, service and music were first class. Many members came down to Shelter Island a little early to see the Parade of Lights launch just across the street from the resort. And we were surprised by a visit from Santa! Thank you so much to Diane McDonald and Nedra Rummell for working their magic. The evening was an absolute delight! Plans are underway to secure the same venue for next year. Welcome to our Officers and Board Members for 2005. Our club members thank you for your service and I look forward to working with you all. The first Board meeting of 2005 will be at 6:30 PM on January 19th in the Cush Jaguar Board Room. It’s time to renew your membership in the San Diego Jaguar Club. Will you also take a few minutes to complete the Member Interest Survey? The information you provide helps us set the direction for the club. We rely on your feedback to tell us what types of activities you would enjoy throughout the year. Please let us know what special skills you have and how you can help the club. If more members help out with just a few things we can avoid a few members trying to shoulder it all. We will be recruiting members in a few weeks to form committees to support our Concours D’Elegance in August. I’m looking forward to another year of fun club activities and a chance to work with you. The committee for Rolling British Car Day has advised that the date for this year’s rally will be Sunday, April 17th. Mark your calendars. This is a short, fun, non-structured, untimed amble through some interesting parts of the county in the company of many lovely British cars and their drivers. The day ends with a lunch. More details as they become available. It’s always a fun day. Enjoy life’s drive! Hazel Jack Bolson Neathercutt, owner of the Neathercutt Collection and Museum in Sylmar, CA, also famous for co-founding Merle Norman Cosmetics, passed away Monday, December 6, 2004 at the age of 91. As many SDJC members know, the Neathercutt has one of the finest automobile collections in the country, an outstanding automobile library, and a state-of-the-art restoration shop. His wife of 71 years, Dorothy, preceded him in death by just two months, on October 8, 2004. They developed their interest in cars early in their marriage and began collecting automobiles in 1956. The first two cars in the collection were a 1936 Duesenberg convertible roadster and a 1930 DuPont town car. Today the collection contains close to 250 automobiles, along with numerous musical instuments, a 1937steam locomotive and a 1912 Pullman railcar. POSITION AVAILABLE Job Description: 1. JCNA Survey On Page 6 of this issue is a survey from the JCNA. This is the same survey as on the JCNA Web site. It has been included in the newsletter for the benefit of our members who do not have access to the Internet or wish not to answer the survey on-line. Please fill out the survey and mail it in. The mailing address is at the top of the survey. The following paragraph is a note from the JCNA regarding this survey. Dear fellow JCNA Member, The information gained by this survey will be used to show potential Jaguar Journal advertisers and JCNA event sponsors, the effectiveness of working with the JCNA. Determining our membership's involvement in various types leisure activities, will guide us to solicit help and Jaguar Journal advertising from the most appropriate sources, resulting in further Journal enhancement. Jaguars are our reason for being, and Jaguar Cars, being our largest single advertiser and supporter, is the reason for the concentration of questions about automobiles. Your answers will be of particular interest to them. By asking your most and least favorite things about the JCNA, we are soliciting your "constructive criticism." The Challenge Championship, the JCNA's biennial North American championship Concours d'Elegance, is made spectacular, because it attracts the support of many companies interested in doing business with you, the members of the JCNA. To gain that support, we need to show them that you are planning to attend. Finally, your responsiveness will help guide the JCNA board's future decision making. Thank you! JCNA Board of Directors Please RSVP by Monday, January 10 to Nedra Rummell (760) 634-3477 or nedrar1@adelphia.net Directions: From I-5, exit at Palomar Airport Road, turning West. December 7, 2004 Re: Car Club Council of Greater San Diego (CCC of SD) Over 50 representatives attended the December 7th Car Club Council meeting at the Auto Museum. We had first hand reports from President Bob Schlotter of the recent SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada. There was a strong emphasis at the show on after market tuner parts for American and Japanese cars, or “Tuner Cars,” as they are often referred to in the motor press. Additionally, Ford was a featured manufacturer with special displays of the new Mustang and Ford GT sports car. The Auto Museum will begin a new display featuring Italian automobiles beginning January 28 through March 28, 2005. Marques in the show include Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Alpha Romeo, Bizzarini, with some others, such as Fiat and ASA. The current exhibit celebrating Oldsmobile ends January 25, 2005. Radio and television personality Dave Stahl will be hosting a new weekly show on 800 AM, ESPN Radio, starting January 2, 2005 from 7 to 9 am Sunday mornings. The show will also be carried by www.wsradio.com according to Dave. Discussion topics will cover all forms of motor vehicles, including airplanes, bikes, go-carts, trucks and cars. Dave also said that shows would be broadcast from remote sites, such as car shows, or other auto events. Dave can be reached at KUSI television in San Diego. The next council meeting will be held at 7:00 pm, January 4 at the Auto Museum. All Jaguar club members are invited to come to any of the meetings to participate or just observe. If you have a special event you would like to promote, contact me and I will get you on the program for the evening and you will have time to promote your event to the club representatives and you can hand out flyers about the activity. Respectfully submitted, Mike Partain michael2@san.rr.com Your writer has volunteered to lead the steering committee for next June’s Auto Show on the Lawn, which is planned for June 4, 2005. Last year there were over 350 cars on display and the goal for next year is to reach 500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles. If you are interested in being part of the planning committee, or helping with next year’s show, please contact me at (858)549-4658. We will begin meeting once a month, the second week in January 2005 at the Auto Museum. The La Jolla Motor Classic is scheduled for Sunday, January 16, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the La Jolla Cove. Symbolic Motors of La Jolla is sponsoring the event. Admission is free for spectators. The show will have a special salute to Italian cars. He was so impressed with Jim Hallameyer’s video of the 2003 concours that he invited Allen and Gypsy Souter to film, who shot and produced an excellent video of this year’s Muckenthaler Motor Car Festival, to make the run from LA to San Diego with the JOCLA. Allen and Gypsy not only filmed the drive to Spanish Landing, they also videoed the events of the day and produced a professional quality record of the event. It’s all cut to music with titles, special effects, and real art photography. Jaguar Tracks January 2005 Page 15 San Diego Jaguar Club (SDJC) Board Meeting Minutes Cush Jaguar Boardroom, 17 November 2004 Present: Board members Hazel Beck, Len Sonnenberg, Nedra Rummell, and Grant Rummell Functional chairpersons - Roger Townsend, Katherine Partain Members absent Paul Novak, Castle Phelps, Roger McDonald, Barbie Corbett-Newmin Hazel called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. Board Reports President: Elections for the 2005 officers and board members were held at the November 5th dinner meeting. Paul Novak received no ballots in the mail. All 44 ballots cast were done so at the dinner. According to Jane Anderson’s membership list, there are 177 memberships. The 44 voters represent 25% of the membership voting at the meeting. Four of the members voting did use the ballots printed in the Jaguar Tracks. The other 40 were cast using the ballots handed out at the dinner. This is similar to the voting in 2003, where the majority of the votes for officers and board members came at the dinner meeting. So in 2005, the ballots should be brought to the November dinner meeting, as well as being printed in the October issue of the Jaguar Tracks. Results - President 43 Hazel Beck, 1 write-in vote for Donna Frye Vice President 44 Carolyn Clark Secretary 44 Nedra Rummell Treasurer 43 Grant Rummell 1 write-in vote for Kilroy Board member 43 Paul Novak 1 write-in vote for Glenn Simpson Board member 44 Dennis Dater Next year’s ballot will be published in the October issue of the Jaguar Tracks. This year the ballot went into the November issue. Vice President: Nedra and Hazel held a 1st VP Handover breakfast meeting with Carolyn Clark. They discussed Carolyn’s role as First Vice President in scheduling upcoming events and the Christmas Party. Reservations are pouring in for the SDJC Holiday Party. Nedra is going to send out a thank you e-mail and a last call for tickets over the Thanksgiving weekend. Diane McDonald and Nedra have purchased the centerpiece decorations. The program for the Holiday Party is being developed next week by Diane, Nedra, and Hazel. Nedra is also going to send out an e-mail asking party attendees to bring new, unwrapped toys for the Polinsky Center. Nedra thinks January social event should be casual and less expensive. All plans, if any, for the January social are TBD. Tentative plans for the February social event is a lunch at Jasmines to celebrate Chinese New Year. Patsy Millard is working with the owner to set up a private room for us with dragon dancers. The date is Saturday, February 12th. This is a joint event with the Mercedes Club. Membership Renewal forms for 2005 - Grant printed the membership renewal forms for Jane Anderson. They were sorted, stapled, and stuffed into envelopes. A member interest survey form is going in with the renewal forms. These will be mailed out the first of December. Address changes were submitted for Steve Boyle and Grahamm and Diana Timms. There were no requests for new memberships. Nedra passed out a Telephone Tree Roster sorted by area code. Over the past two months we have been discussing Jaguar Tracks January 2005 Page 16 (continued on Page 17) 17 November 2004 Meeting Minutes (continued from Page 16) reinstating the tree to help boost attendance at socials, drives, etc. This telephone tree is feasible if board members and functional chairpersons are willing to make calls per the list in their area code. Grant wondered if we could use an automatic dialer that leaves a message about an upcoming event and to call back the event coordinator. He is going to check on the cost to acquire and set up such a system. We received a check for $470. This was for the return of the $500 deposit check paid to the Admiral Kidd Club to reserve the date for the 2004 Holiday Party minus $30 for a cancellation fee. Steve Boyle was reimbursed for a $500 check he paid to reserve Shelter Point for the December 12 Holiday Party. The contract states the deposit was paid. Hazel asked that the club have reserved parking cordoned off at the hotel for the Holiday Party due to the amount of traffic expected that night for the Parade of Lights, the Rolls Royce Club dinner, etc. Nedra is going to check into this request. Some of the costs for the party include: $65 per meal, $400 + tip DJ, centerpieces, and parking, coming to $96 total, per person. Members are being charged $65 each and guests are $90. $1750 is the projected subsidy for this year’s party. $1965 was last year’s total cost for the holiday party. Roger Townsend suggested a different venue for the 2005 Holiday Party that might be more cost effective. He said the Navy has many venues for parties open to the public. The clubhouse at the Admiral Baker Field was mentioned. Can we use our own caterer or do we have to use in-house catering? Roger will get the description book and find out about the catering. The Auto Museum dinner was a huge success. Nedra has gotten a lot of positive feedback about both the food and the venue. We appreciated the owner of the Imperial House donating two tickets to a Mystery Dinner show to use as a Gold Ticket Drawing Prize. Secretary: Katherine is Acting Secretary today. Paul Novak is out-of-town on business. He e-mailed Katherine the final version of the minutes from the 13 October 2004 meeting. She printed them, made copies and passed them out at tonight’s meeting. Grant motioned and Nedra seconded the motion to accept the October minutes. There was no discussion as everyone had previously reviewed the minutes via e-mail and sent comments to Paul. A unanimous vote approved the minutes. Treasurer: The quantity of money spent and on-hand is about the same as last year. There is some money earmarked for Orson that needs to go to the Zoo. Dues are down a bit from last year as we are 6 or 8 members less this year, plus we reduced the fee to $59 for this year only. The dues are going back up to $65.00 for 2005. That should help increase the bank balance in 2005. All of the renewed ads were paid. We earned $255 from the White Elephant sale to subsidize the cost of the Holiday Party. Logowear showed a profit this year as we sold inventory purchased last year, especially at the Concours. The Concours also made money this year. The newsletter cost more money to produce this year as it has a greater number of pages now. The laptop was an extraordinary expense for 2004. Grant proposed some changes to the tracking method for checks. No checks should be issued unless accompanied by an SDJC check request. The check request would then be used as a tracking slip until the check clears the bank account. Grant said he would accept a completed hardcopy in person, by fax or electronically. He wants this to apply to all spending. With the elections, the signers on the bank account need to be changed. Len brought a new signature card for people to fill out. The signers are the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer. The following list includes both the outgoing (2004) and incoming (2005) officers for the San Diego Jaguar Club. A copy of the final, approved minutes of this meeting needs to be given to the bank so it will accept the signatory changes on the club account. Outgoing 2004 Officers President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Hazel Beck Steve Boyle Paul Novak Len Sonnenberg Incoming 2005 Officers President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Hazel Beck Carolyn Clark Nedra Rummell Grant Rummell Nedra made a motion and Roger seconded to accept the Treasurer’s report, which was followed by unanimous approval vote. (continued on Page 18) Jaguar Tracks January 2005 Page 17 17 November 2004 Minutes (continued from page 17) Jaguar Tracks: Lesco Engine Rebuilders sent in a request for another three month ad for December, January, and February. Roger requested that Katherine provide him with the ad format information as an 8 1/2 by 11 page so he could distribute it to existing and prospective advertisers. The December issue will most likely be late due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Old Business The Roster production still needs help. Castle Phelps volunteered to help at the October meeting, but he still needs help. Raffles needs a shopping person to take over for Diane. Hazel will check with Diane to see if she got a response to her Jaguar Tracks ad yet. New Business The Board put forth nominations to JCNA for Jaguar Dealer of the Year, the Andrew Whyte Award and the Karen Miller Award. They also voted unanimously and selected the SDJC’s Most Valuable Member for 2004. With no other business, Grant motioned to adjourn, Roger seconded and the motion was approved unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 7:55 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 19 January 2005.
