HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
So, what is it like at Tatachilla? The
College is in an incredible setting. The
grounds are beautiful and from a Junior
School perspective are the perfect
environment for all sorts of recess and
lunchtime activities from imaginative
play to games with rules. There is
plenty of room to run, hide and explore.
There are playgrounds, sandpits and
shady corners to retreat into.
The first question I get asked about
my new job at Tatachilla by friends and
former colleagues is, “Are you going to
move?” followed closely by, “What’s it
like at Tatachilla?” People who know me
well understand that I’d never leave my
old terrace house in Hurtle Square. I’m
a townie through and through, happy
to park my car on the street, take care
of my nature strip ‘garden’, and drift off
to sleep to the sounds of the Coopers
Alehouse patrons across the square.
I’m also happy to make the 45-minute
drive down the Southern Expressway
each day, so long as I have left in time
to go via the drive through for coffee.
And when I turn onto Tatachilla Road,
I’m rewarded with an incredible view of
the vines of McLaren Vale and the hills
in the distance.
Tatachilla, being an R-12 school, gives
the Junior School students access to
resources not often available to primary
students, such as the performing arts
spaces, the gym and the science labs,
and the specialist staff who are experts
in their field. The Junior School musical
will be held later in the year, and there
are many other College-wide events
bringing students and families together.
In addition, I have been warmly
welcomed by the staff across the three
sub-schools, and feel well supported
as I learn the ropes – of which there are
many! Even Odie came up for a pat
on my first day here when I visited last
year.
ACT JUSTLY. LOVE MERCIFULLY. WALK HUMBLY.
But what’s the best part? That’s easy
to answer. The best part is getting to
know the students. Now that I am seen
about the place and have taken part in
chapel and assembly, I can’t cross the
school yard without cheerful greetings
from students of all ages. Caring and
respectful relationships contribute
significantly to our sense of purpose
and wellbeing, and although Tatachilla
Lutheran College is well resourced and
a beautiful environment to work in, the
considerate and thoughtful community
of staff and students is really what
makes it a great place to work.

Welcome to Year 8. Part of my Role as
the Year 8 Coordinator enables me to
organise many exciting events for the
year level. Please contact me if you need
any assistance, I am here to help the Year
8 students and their families with Pastoral
Care and general wellbeing.
Hello, I am new to Tatachilla this year and
am the Mathematics Coordinator and a
Year 7 Home Group Teacher.
I have held a variety of roles including
Sports Coordinator and House Coordinator at my previous
school. In 2016 I am teaching a range of subjects: 7-10 Health
and Physical Education, 8 English and 8 Humanities.
In my spare time I love to keep fit by playing sport. I play
Basketball all year round, in the summer I play Tennis and
during the winter I play and coach Netball. I live near the
beach and enjoy spending time at the beach during the
warmer months.
I am new to Tatachilla and am looking forward to meeting all
Year 8’s and their families. Have a wonderful 2016.

Teacher
I am a new teacher at Tatachilla Lutheran
College and am very excited to start
my career in this community. I have
recently moved from Melbourne where
I completed my teaching and science
qualifications.
I have a passion for mathematics and
science and I will be teaching these subjects in the Middle
School as well as Psychology in the Senior School.
When I’m not teaching I love to cook, travel and spend time
with my family and friends. I am very excited to be a member
of the Tatachilla community and get to know everyone.
I have spent the last 8 years teaching at
Concordia College, and value the ethos
of the Lutheran system. this year I will be
teaching mathematics classes across
both the middle and senior years.
My change of employment has also lead to a house move,
relocating from the Adelaide Hills to be closer to work. I am
enjoying the sea change and have fallen in love with the
beach at Moana. We have bought a block of land locally and
so will be busy with the build of a new house this year.
I have 3 children. The youngest at 4 attends day care, and
the older two are starting Tatachilla in Years 8 and 10.
COURTNEY BLAKE
Youth Worker
My name is Courtney and I am the Youth
Worker at Tatachilla Lutheran College.
As a youth worker, my role can be quite
diverse, but is focused on ensuring that
students feel supported throughout their
school journey. I am present throughout
common areas within the school during
recess and lunch, visiting classrooms,
attending camps and excursions and assisting with weekly
Chapel Services. I believe that each person holds inherent
value, and I seek to create a space (and practice) that
encapsulates this and encourages students to share their
story. I am passionate to see students equipped with tools
that will assist them within their context. I am able to provide
one-on-one and group support to students and address a
range of concerns of both academic and personal nature.

SKOOLBAG
We have had a fantastic response to the launch of our
new Smartphone App Skoolbag with over 720 people
downloading it and setting up their push notification groups.
The aim of this communication tool is to be able to send quick
and succinct reminder messages to our families relevant to
your child’s year level including the sending out of emergency
information. This app also allows parents to send a quick
message to the College regarding absentees and also to
receive our fortnightly newsletter.
These messages are called Push Notifications. An example of
such a notification might be “Year 3 Zoo excursion tomorrow
– children to wear PE Uniform. Bring packed lunch.
TLC SPORTS DAY CARNIVAL
Friday 11th March 2015 9am-3pm
Food & Drink Stalls available. Come and support your House!
Attached are the instructions to download the app from your
applicable app store. if you have not already done so. The
final step allows you to “turn on” notifications relevant to your
child’s year level and sub-school. This will ensure that you will
receive these important reminders.
If you need any assistance with this process, please do not

JUNIOR SCHOOL CHAPEL
JS PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS
Pixar and Disney look out! Our own resident animator,
Ms Suzanne Schmidt, dazzled the Junior School at chapel
this week with a creative and funny stop-motion animation
about the Three Grumpy Men, and how they became the
Three Wise Men. The students were enthralled as the story
unfolded which was entertaining, and also helped us better
understand the Junior School theme.
Many thanks to parents who were able to attend these
evenings. We hope you found them useful, got to know
your child’s teacher a little, and feel confident about the
expectations in each classroom. The teaching staff have
completed a review of the night’s format. You are also
welcome to give feedback on any aspect of the night.

Year 6’s also led us with cheerful singing and actions.
TWILIGHT TOUR OF COLLEGE
Parents and friends of the Junior School are always welcome
to attend chapel in the Activity Centre, 9am, Monday
mornings. Just turn up on the day and we will find you a seat.
The next twilight tour is on Thursday 3rd March beginning at
6.30pm. If you have friends who are looking for a school for
their children, please encourage them to attend to learn about
the good things happening here at the College.
We also held our first assembly for the school year last
week. This week at assembly, the SRC students will be
introduced to the school, and Year 4a will be presenting their
Foundations for Learning journey.
TWILIGHT FOOD AFFAIR
This year, the Junior School is responsible for three stalls
selling the following items:

Milkshakes and Toasted Sandwiches
RECEPTION BIBLE PRESENTATION
Last Monday our new Reception students received their
storybook Bible, as a welcome gift from the College. The
Bibles were a take home gift for the students to share with
their families.

We need donations of Assorted lollies, Easter eggs,
chocolate treats and lucky dip items (50c-$1.00). On the
Thursday before the event we are also asking for helpers to
assist with the bagging of the sweets/chocolates and lucky
dips and preparing the sandwiches.
Donations can be left at the JS SSO anytime from now on,
and will be gratefully received. The bagging up and sandwich
making will take place from 9am on Thursday 17th March in
the gym.

au if you are able to work on one of the stalls from 4pm up to
9pm (or until sold out). The Twilight Food Affair is the major
fundraising event in the College, and your support plays a
vital part in its success.
WELLBEING IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
This week, Mr Damon Prenzler, (Assistant Head of Junior
School – Wellbeing), Ms Emma Thompson, (JS Counsellor),
and Mrs Sarah Hoff-Zweck (Head of Middle School),
travelled to St Andrew’s Lutheran in Queensland to view their
wellbeing program. St Andrew’s wellbeing program has been
established for many years and they have proven strategies
in place to support students and staff. We hope to learn from
them and continue to provide the best level of care for our
JS students.

In the Middle School students
have started the year reflecting
on their key strengths they have
to help them create goals for their
year and find joy in their learning.
In the Student Planner students
have had the opportunity to
complete the character strengths
survey to find out their top five
strengths. We hope that in
students coming to know their strengths they can draw upon
these to over come obstacles, grow and find joy in their
learning.
YEAR 8 ARVO OUT
Last Friday the Year 8 students excitedly departed for the
Beach House, Glenelg. Where students spent the afternoon
interacting with their peers developing new friendships with
new and returning students to Tatachilla. Students had the
opportunity to enjoy a number of rides and activities including
dodgem cars, water slides, basketball shoot outs, carrousels
and car racing. What a fantastic way to end the week.
THANK YOU TO OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS
A special thank you to parents who came along to support
the Swimming Carnival in Week 3 at the Marion Aquatics and
parents who volunteered to help out in assisting the smooth
operations of this day. Your support makes these events run
and is a part of building community. If you are interested in
becoming a registered TLC Volunteer please contact Mrs Kay
Digby at the College to find out how.
As our young people begin to settle into new routines, their
subjects and relationships with their teachers and peers, it
is our prayer that they draw upon their strengths to enable
them to use the gifts and talents that God has given them to
achieve, lead, serve and find joy.

YR 8 ARVO OUT
from the
SENIOR SCHOOL
The school year began in earnest
and as you would have read in the
last newsletter, it was busy. Now
in Week Four the structures are
in place and the school year is
settling into the usual momentum.
Last week the swimming carnival
went off with a splash (excuse the
pun). What a wonderful event this
was and a great insight for me into
the culture of the student body.
Those that attended I congratulate
you on your participation either
in the water or a supporter of the
competitors. When I think of school
I think of events such as these and the benefits it brings to
the community. It links a combined purpose and ownership
of each persons educational journey with a common theme
under the Tatachilla banner. This was exemplified by a
little act of courage that really influenced individuals into
a common purpose, namely cheering on the team. I talk
especially of Taliah Zadow (Yr 12). Essentially she was
the anchor swimmer for her team and as she entered the
pool for her lap the other competitors were exiting the pool
having finished the race. The courage in this move raised the
emotions of the entire College as she completed the event.
What a leader and role model she is.
Courage has become the theme for the Year 10 camp for
2016. The camp which runs in Term 3, Week 9 and 10 in
conjunction with Work Experience is going to be one of
developing courage to face our personal challenges. We
have set in place an outline of where this will take us as a
community of learners and we look forward to developing
and ratifying the program in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for
more news in this area.
On Wednesday 24th February we ran a ‘Parents as Career
Transition Support’ evening. This event informed parents of
the ways they can support their children in the later years of
their education as they transition into the work environment.
Mrs Tracy Templeman presented an outline of the current
work environment and the many challenges our students
will face as they enter an ever competitive jobs market.
Additionally, she outlined the type of careers that will be
available into the future. There exists a very different world of
work today than when many of us, as parents, grew up. Thank
you to all who attended I hope you gained insight into how
you can support your child.
This week our Year 12 students are out on one of their
programmed ‘CRAVE’ days. These are also themed events
that run over the course of the year and will challenge a
students perception on many issues. This week’s theme is
on marginalisation. Very topical as we enter a world of the
unknown with threats and stigma’s that make us form opinion
about others particularly refugees. I look forward to hearing
from the students what they have learned about themselves,
about others and about the world.

The New 2016 Menu was placed on
the College Website at the beginning of
Week 4. Menus are also available from
the Canteen.
We have added five new vegan
products – a vegan Sausage roll $4.00,
a wholemeal Cornish pasty $4.80,
chickpea and rosemary pie $4.80, lentil
and mushroom pie $4.80, and a lentil
and Vindaloo curry pie $4.80.
There have been some price rises so
please check your favourites.
Any Parents or Grandparents who
would like to help in the Canteen and
be placed on our Volunteer Roster can
contact the Canteen. Volunteers are
needed for Fridays from 11am – 1.40pm
and on Monday mornings from 8.40
-9.30am.

SAPSASA District Athletics Carnival,
Wed 16 March
Tatachilla will be hosting both the R-12
Sports Day Carnival and the SAPSASA
Districts Athletics Carnival on the
grounds this year.
At both events we would like to offer an
array of food and refreshments to those
in attendance and are now calling for
parent volunteers who would be able to
help with preparation, serving, cooking
or baking at these events.

SMS OF STUDENT
ABSENCES
As of Monday 15 February caregivers
will receive an SMS from the College
notifying that your child is absent from
school without notification. This will
be sent after 11am and you will be
asked to contact our Absentee Line
on 8329 4444 to confirm this absence.
Your assistance with this important
notification is appreciated and please
remember to let the College know via
the Absentee Line or by emailing the
College on tlc@tatachilla.sa.edu.au
when your child is absent for the day or
part thereof.
VOLUNTEERING AT TLC
Names are now being taken for the
next Volunteers Training Workshop.
If you are interested in becoming
a registered TLC Volunteer please
contact Mrs Kay Digby, Community
Relations & Fundraising Officer at the
College to find out how.
The College bus service is reserved for
full-time/one-way travel users only.
All bus use/alterations must be booked
via the College and not the bus
company.
After the initial start to the school year
slight alterations have now been made
to bus routes. New bus timetables/
maps can now be downloaded from the
College website.

Students are reminded that they
are responsible for any personal
belongings taken on the buses. Items
left on buses, if found by the driver,
will be returned to the students on the
following trip or handed into the College
Office.
Due to some buses being at near or
full capacity it may not be possible for
students to change to alternative buses
or to have a guest travel with them.
All alternative arrangements must
be made prior to travelling and an
approved bus pass obtained from the
Bus Coordinator at the College.

FRIDAY, 18TH MARCH 2016 4-9PM
The Twilight Food Affair is the College’s major fundraising event of
the year enjoyed by the College Community.
Held on the Junior School Oval the event has an array of food and
refreshment stalls and a variety of fun activities for the kids. There
is also loads of entertainment to enjoy. And to top it off this year’s
event will conclude with a fireworks display!
STALL HELPERS/VOLUNTEERS
Many hands make light work!
We offer an array of food and refreshments stalls and are calling
for parent volunteers interested in lending a hand.
If you are able to spare some time serving on a stall it would be
greatly appreciated. Rosters will be drawn up allowing helpers to
also enjoy time on the evening with their family and friends.
Some of the stalls this year include:
Curries, Hot Dogs, Hot Potatoes, BBQ - sausage sizzle & Roast
Meat Sliders, Wine & Beer, Soft Drinks, Stirfrys, Hot Chips, Lollies
& Lucky Dips, Easter Eggs & Chocolates, Milkshakes & Toasted
Sandwiches, Nachos, and Hot Donuts.
Setup & Breakdown
Calling the strong and the fit out there! If this description sounds
like you and you are willing and able to spare a couple of hours
during the afternoon or at the end of the night we’d love your help.
