The
A Tribute to All Moms
From PAGE OBENSHAIN
2012 President
A
fter mentioning our
Moms in the May issue, I thought I would
say Happy Father’s Day
to all of you fathers out
there in Porsche land. While I have no
special father/Porsche story to tell, I had
the greatest dad in the world and appreciated all I learned from him. If he were
here today he would be 115 years old.
I’m not very old, but he was when I was
born, it just took him a long time to find
the perfect lady to raise a family.
I attended the annual meeting of the
presidents of the 12 regions in Vero
Beach. Did you know that of all the new
Porsches sold, 30 percent are to PCA
members?
Our region was singled out for having the best DE program of all regions
in our zone. National likes our entire DE
program. In fact, we were the first region in the USA to train and certify our
instructors in a uniform way, which was
nationally adopted. We should be very
proud of our accomplishments.
There were good discussions on
many topics at the meeting and was
well worth attending. You will hear more
results of the meeting as we go though
the year.
The full color Porsche Profile received an incredible number of favorable
comments and we will continue the full
color publications. We hope you are enjoying this great upgrade.
Due to unforeseen circumstances,
the seminar scheduled to be held at the
three dealerships in May was canceled.
We extend our many thanks to Joe
Shukys, Jeremy Dixon, and Jim Farmer
In Memoriam

for their time and efforts in putting it together. Stay tuned.
Rallies have always been a part of
PCA, but they are ever increasingly hard
to make because of all of the traffic. Jose
Uranga is working on a good one for
July 8. Please register early, as we will not
have any trouble having a big turn out.
We are looking for a rally master or two,
so if you have some experience, please
let me know. All we ask is one event per
year per rally master.

Ahh, rumblings
Did you hear the rumblings? It occurred
to me that we haven’t been on the road
together for awhile. A few months back
Eunice Painter and I were discussing some
possibilities over a drink (maybe two) and
we came up with an idea we think you will
like. Key West! We are planning a trip to
Key West August 17-19 where we will
meet in Fort Myers, cruise on over to Key
West on a boat, and hang out together
for the weekend. Details are still in the
works and I hear there may be some fishing stories bantered about upon our return, however, stories about Duval Street
will definitely stay on Duval Street so you
need to be there to be in the know. Drop
me a line if you have interest or input
about this Porsche Escape at steelmag@
gmail.com and be on the lookout for the
real details.
Sunrise to Sunset Rally

part of a first class event on Sept. 28 –

The Membership Starting Line
By Joe Shukys, Membership Chairman
Great article, Lou, and we thank you for your contribution.
Contributing to this region starts today for any member who
has an interest in more than just attending some events. We
need volunteers at almost every event and we are always looking for future board members to share in the duties of representing the general membership. Please don’t be shy about
volunteering or attending events, as I am confident you will find
our group to be so unique and rich with history.
As always, I can be contacted at joe.shukys@suncoastpca.org.
Dear Members,
If you have not read Lou Foubare’s “The
Passing of the Torch” Part 1 (April Issue)
and Part 2 (May Issue), then please put this
down and go back and read them! It never
ceases to amaze me how great our current members are and
how the rich history told through stories can be so enlightening.

On the cover…
David Bassett took this photo just outside the tent at Porscheplatz on Saturday
evening during 12 Hours at Sebring this past March.
Not familiar with Porscheplatz? Bassett explains that it is “an area off Midway
Drive at the exit of turn 17 heading down the front straight, with a large parking area and tent, which houses displays, a flat screen TV with video feed of the
race, refreshments and grandstands for viewing.” Formerly run by Florida dealers, it is run currently and for the past several years by Porsche North America,
staffed by PCA volunteers, and coordinated by David O’Neil, Zone Rep.
“At peak, “ Bassett noted, “170 cars filled area, with 20 more in the overflow
annex, where our three dealers, Reeves, Bert Smith and Suncoast, set up motor homes and tents and fed lots of attendees. More than 500 PCA members
registered at the tent, not counting guests, children, etc.”

PORSCHE PROFILE • JUNE 2012
Getting to know your PCA Suncoast Region, one member at a time
10 Questions for Don Brundrett, PCA Suncoast Region member for 18 years (on and off)
PORSCHE PROFILE: What’s your occupation and in which part of the Suncoast Region do you live?
DON BRUNDRETT: I retired from Continental Airlines in 1998, then worked as an
H & R Block tax preparer for six seasons. I
live in Apollo Beach and have a cattle ranch
in Texas but it’s producing nothing but prickly pear cactus and rattlesnakes due to the
drought.
PP: How did you first become a Porsche/
Suncoast enthusiast?
DB: I have been a sports car person since
high school in the early 1950s. Our band director drove an MG TD, which I spent a lot
of time drooling over.
I first joined PCA in 1978 after I purchased
a 1973 911T Targa from a good friend. That
car is a story in itself, which you probably
don’t want to hear. I drove that car 53,000
miles and sold it for $1600 less that I had
paid for it. I think that was the most bang for
the buck I have ever gotten. After selling the
911, I dropped out of PCA.
I bought a new ’99 Boxster in July 1999 and
immediately re-joined PCA. My wife Becky
and I attended our first event, a fun rally,
on Halloween of that year. We met a great
group who welcomed us with open arms,
especially Dave and Shirley Cook and Mark
and Michelle Krekorian.
excel – or would like to excel?
PP:What models of Porsches have you
owned and what do you currently drive?
PP:What interests you, other than Porsche?
DB: My first sports car was a 1958 MG A,
followed by a 1963 TR-4 which I drove for
many years. I also had a 1982 VW Scirocco
and a well used 1990 Miata. My ’99 Boxster
was followed by a 2002 Boxster S, a 2005
base Boxster, and currently a 2009 base.
Continued on page 20
DB: I have always enjoyed road trips, as did
Becky. We really learned how to pack when
we took the Miata to Nova Scotia.
PP:What is your “dream” car?
DB: I’m looking forward to a 981 in due
course.
PP: In which PCA/Suncoast activities or
events do you participate?
DB: Over the years, we attended most of
the social events, several rallies, and Parade
2003. We also volunteered at the Sebring
48 Hours three times. Our last event together was the Christmas Gala in 2008.
Becky passed away on Dec. 23, 2008.
PP: Is there a Suncoast event in which you

Suncoast PCA Does More Than Drive
Charitable Endeavors Reports Funds Raised
It’s
amazing what
Suncoast
members can
do just having
fun with their
Porsches! In
February, board members decided to raise
$10,000 per year, over a five- to seven-year
period, for All Children’s Hospital’s new
research program. They also decided to
pledge $10,000 to remodel a guest room
at the Ronald McDonald House in Tampa.
“It was mind-boggling,” said Sharron
Shields, chair of the Charitable Endeavors
committee. “How could we raise this kind
of money? But here we are, a few months
later, and $8,000 has already been raised for
All Children’s, and we have reached our goal
of $10,000 to Ronald McDonald House.”
At the April board meeting, 48 Hours
race Co-chair Dave Herndon announced
that through the efforts of Bob Dikman
we had met our goal for Ronald McDonald
House. Bob was the sponsor chairman for
the 48 Hours
race, and raised
the
money
through a silent
and live auction.
In addition,
$2,000 has been
raised for the
R.I.C.H. House,
an after-school
program
for
Sharron Shields
at-risk kids located in the Sulphur Springs area of Tampa,
Shields noted.
Under the sponsorship of Bert Smith
Porsche, Suncoast President Page Obenshain, members Miles Frantz, Dave Herndon,
Christian Rava, and Past President David
Bassett managed to throw together an
awesome kart race honoring the memory
of Indy car driver and St. Petersburg resident
Dan Weldon, a benefit for All Children’s.The
featured attraction was Porsche factory
driver Patrick Long, who announced that
PORSCHE PROFILE • JUNE 2012
this would be the first of an annual event.
Next, Obenshain, Membership Chairman Joe Shukys, and Board Member Jeremy
Dixon, along with sponsorship from Bert
Smith Porsche, put together Porsches on
Parade at Spa Beach in St. Petersburg. Members displayed their prized Porsches all for
the benefit of All Children’s Hospital.
And while all this money was being
raised, Brian West and the autocross gang,
Mark Lasota, Tod Byram, Bill Riley, and Sharron and Danny Shields, were raising money
for the R.I.C.H. House by holding an Advanced Autocross School.
“This is what’s great about our club,”
Shields marveled. “Without touching the
club funds, we can do so much for our community, and all the while we’re just having
fun with our Porsches!”

Advanced Autocross School Shares 40 Years of Experience
anny Shields’s Advanced Autocross
School this past
April 14 had a
full field of drivers learning techniques for going faster in autocrosses,
while raising funds for charity. Shields
shared driving techniques gained from
four decades of autocrossing and
racing. Instructors Bill Riley, Sharron
Shields, Tod Byram and Mark Lasota
also provided in-car instruction.
“The club has hosted autocross
schools in the past,” noted Shields, “but
those have typically been oriented toward newcomers. The Advanced Au-

Autocross School and came back for Sunday’s autocross. Photo by Mike Kwasin.

tocross School targeted drivers who
are regular competitors, but have
not been improving as much as they
would like. The goal was to give each
driver at least one or two techniques
that they can practice going forward,
to make them more successful.”
Following a classroom session and
instructed course walk, each driver
made three timed runs, as they would
at a typical autocross, then moved to
the in-car instruction phase with an instructor riding along or driving.
Over the course of the program, “all
students went faster, with most seeing
large improvements in time and some
seeing improvements that were simply amazing,” Shields said. “In a sport
where a tenth of a second can make
the difference between winning and
losing, most students gained full seconds of time on the course.”
Certificates were awarded to all
participants, along with trophies for
fastest time (Jerry Eggert) and the
biggest improvement in time (Jobe
Steele). Volunteer worker Harvey
Cummins, instructor Bill Riley, and
student Mike Streeper won door prizes.

The organizers thank all the instructors, students and volunteer workers
who made the event possible.
Net proceeds of $2,000 from the
event will be donated to the R.I.C.H.

“Weed & Seed” program embraced
by the Tampa Police Department. The
house provides a safe place in the Sulphur Springs neighborhood for kids to

Suncoast Region members may

members and
friends turned
out in great
numbers for the Sunday, April 15, autocross at Zephyrhills airport. Sunny
but windy conditions made for a
pleasant day on taxiway B.
Mark Lasota’s fun and exciting
course was built on the challenging
setup from the previous day’s driving school, but with some changes.
The course was lengthened by several hundred feet, a few of the tight
bends on the outgoing section were
“softened,” the 360 degree clockwise
turn-around circle was transformed
to a 180 degree counter-clockwise

half-moon (Mark wanted to wear
tires evenly!), and an optional box
was changed into a single gate. Despite the extra distance,
Sunday’s course times
were very close to Saturday’s times.
Dominating
Danny
Shields posted the fast
time of the day (FTD)
with a blistering 51.562
seconds in the blue 986
Boxster S. A few seconds
back were Paul Wright
(RX-8) and Cory Corona (350Z),
claiming the Open Street Tire and
Open Race Tire class victories.
Sharron Shields showed that she
meant business posting a women’s
FTD just a few tenths of a second
back from Paul and Cory. Russell
Swope scored another strong finish
with fastest 911 time in his black 996
C2. Five one-hundreths of a second
behind Russell was Ralph Carr driving his father Albert’s 911SC instead
of his trusty 986 Boxster S. We can
only speculate how fast Ralph might
have driven that 911 had the second
gear not “retired” during his third run!

Record Attendance at
April Social at Reeves
O
By David Bassett, Past President
nce again, Reeves Import Motorcars in Tampa
hosted an outstanding social on April 18, attended by more than 100 members. The
food was delicious and the atmosphere festive while the great door prizes
provided by Reeves topped off the evening.
The success of the evening was due not only to the
generosity of Reeves, but also by the hard work of our
two Reeves employees and active Suncoast Region
members Service Manager Jeff Holcomb and Sales Associate Tom Heinz, as well as Sales Manager Bill Eichmann and the rest of the Reeves staff.
Reeves has had a long history of actively supporting
our club. Among the many ways Reeves has supported
us, they provided a check that allowed us to rent the
Sebring track for our first Drivers Education and, most
recently, very generously co-sponsored our 50th Anniversary Celebration Weekend at Innisbrook in May,
2011, along with Bert Smith Porsche and Suncoast Motorsports.

Suncoast Porsches were on
Parade this past April at the Festivals of Speed event in
downtown St. Petersburg. A charity event sponsored by Bert

All Children’s Hospital. Photo by Terry Richard.
E
By Joe Shukys, Membership Chair
very spring the Suncoast
Chapter of PCA hosts
and Bert Smith Porsche
sponsors an event named
“Porsches on Parade.” Every year, we are well attended, but I have a feeling there may be
many who miss this event not understanding what the “parade” thing is all about.
The “parade” is not an actual parade
where we drive down the streets and
wave at admiring onlookers. No, it is more
like a display of our babies in a pristine
setting in downtown St. Pete overlooking
the fabulous Vinoy Hotel. It is an informal
concours event where all you need to do
is show up and really enjoy the morning
and feel good that many small donations
make a large one that we present to charity at day’s end. The children even get into
the mix having their own criteria for judging items like; Coolest Color, Rockin’ Rims,
Best Video game Car and Bad to the Bone,
which aptly named the overall winner.
On show, we had a winning restoration
in a mouth watering 356 with a great story
behind it, and new classics such as a GT2.
A gorgeous IROC tribute car drew a lot of
attention, as did a race car on a trailer that
a current board member recently acquired.
944s were well represented as were the
Boxster and Cayman family. All tolled, we
ended up with over 75 cars in a secluded
safe spot where we left our cars to cross
the water and join the Festivals of Speed
event that was running concurrently.
What amazed me the most was the
overall diversity of
the cars in this event.
We had a 356 Speedster and a 356B, several “long-nose” 911s,
several 74-89 911s
in many body styles,
964s and 993s. Also
present were 944s
and the 968 family, but, sadly, no 924s!
The Boxster and
Cayman family had a
strong showing also.
The newer 911s included 996s, 997s,
and we were hoping
for the new 991 but
did not get one. There were Panameras
PORSCHE PROFILE • JUNE 2012
and Cayennes in force, too. So, the only car
that was not there was the 914?! This was
incredible, in my opinion.
A giant thank you to Bert Smith Porsche
for supporting this annual event is in order.
Their support and manual labor made this
event a success!
Keep this on your calendar for next
year as it might be the most family-friendly
event you’ll find..

DB: All my Boxsters have spent a lot of time
on the road. They have been to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, New England, Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula, many trips to Virginia, and
seven times to the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit in North Carolina. In 2005, Becky and I
drove to California for my son’s wedding and
then spent two weeks sightseeing through
the western states.
PP: Do you prefer the direct way home or
the twists and turns route?
DB: I prefer the twists and turns but they are
hard to find in this area. Getting on and off
the Interstate seems to be the nearest thing.
PP: In your opinion, how could Porsche improve the driving experience?
DB: In my opinion, the Boxster is the best
vehicle Porsche has to offer. I don’t want a
sports car that does not have a folding top
and the two trunks have plenty of storage
20
space, especially now that I travel alone.
Leaving Oregon, I even had a large duffle of
Scuba gear going to my niece who lives in
Tampa.
PP: Do you have a Porsche story
you’d like to share with our readers?
DB: In 2010, I again drove to California and visited places I had not
seen on my other trips. Last August,
I drove to Minnesota and visited
with two of my children and all but
one of my grandchildren. After that
I traveled west through the Black
Hills of South Dakota, through
Montana and on to Calgary and
the Lake Louise/Banf area of Canada.
Turning south, I went through
Glacier National Park then out
to Oregon to visit my sister and
to see the Pacific Coast. Next, I
went to Yellowstone National
Park, where I met up with my
photography group for a week.
PORSCHE PROFILE • JUNE 2012
After that, I went to California and spent a
week with my son and daughter-in-law, returning home by way of Dallas, where my
youngest daughter and her son live. Two
months and 9,100 miles.

Porsche 911 Named 2012 World Performance Car
2012 Porsche 911 first choice of top international automotive media
ATLANTA - The seventh-generation
Porsche 911 has been named the 2012
World Performance Car. The announcement was made at the 2012 New York
International Auto Show, at a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation. The Porsche 911 was one of 34
new-for-2012 vehicles selected for the
annual awards program.
The World Performance Car honor
is awarded each year by an international
jury panel comprised of 66 top-level automotive journalists from 25 countries
around the world. Jury members are
appointed by the World Car Steering
Committee on the basis of their expertise, experience, credibility and influence.
Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as
part of his or her professional work.
Through their respective outlets they
collectively reach an audience of millions of automotive consumers in every
corner of the globe.
22
“We are honored that the 2012
Porsche 911 Carrera S was chosen by
this distinguished group of jurors as the
2012 World Performance Car,” said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of
Porsche Cars North America. “For just
the seventh time in almost 50 years, the
iconic 911 has been revised to the point
of being a new-generation, and winning
this award from a global team of worldclass journalists is excellent validation
for the work and dedication of everyone at Porsche.”
Lower, wider, longer, more powerful
and more efficient than its predecessor,
the all-new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera
has been refined from the ground up.
Delivering 350 hp and 400 hp respectively, the 3.4-liter 911 Carrera and
3.8-liter Carrera S boxer engines are
available with a seven-speed manual
gearbox or the seven-speed dual-clutch
Por sche-Doppelkupplungsgetr iebe
(PDK) automatic.
PORSCHE PROFILE • JUNE 2012
When fitted with the Sport Chrono
PDK, the Carrera can accelerate from
0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the
Carrera S reaches 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top-track-speed of
187 mph.
Inside the cabin of the new 911, numerous comfort, convenience and ergonomic features create an environment
that allows drivers to fully focus on the
road ahead, while also appreciating new
available audio and communications systems by companies like Bose® and
Burmester®.
Both driver and passenger benefit
from almost an inch more front leg
room for increased comfort. The elevated center console allows for faster shifts.
The 2012 Carrera has a base Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)
of $82,100; the 911 Carrera S has a
base MSRP price of $96,400, not including a $950 destination charge.
