Universal Love Languages
Parashat Va’etchanan (Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11)
I
n parashat Va’etchanan, Moses holds his first marriage
counseling session between God and the people of Israel:
“Hear Israel, Adonai is our God, Adonai is One. Love
God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your might.” According to acclaimed author and national
relationship counselor Dr. Gary Chapman, there are five
universal love languages through which people communicate
how they feel loved: words of affirmation, physical touch,
receiving gifts, quality time, and acts of service. Amazingly,
the Torah teaches us that the way to love God involves
the last two of Dr. Chapman’s five universal love
languages—quality time and acts of service. Dr. Chapman
rediscovered and systematized something our ancestors
knew intuitively long ago.
Quality time refers to giving attention to God’s
words “when you lie down and rise up, at home and
on your way.” And an act of service refers to taking the time
to “teach [God’s words] diligently to your children and post
them as a sign upon your doorposts, arms, eyes, and gates.”
These are the ways God wants us to express our love for God.
Of course we join our ancestors in having our own ways
in which we want God to express love for us, and thankfully,
God understands how to speak our love language—“I am the
Lord YOUR God, who brought YOU out of Egypt. I will
never let YOU fail or perish.”
In the first week of this month, the Torah reminds us
that there are many ways for us to love God and many ways
for God to love us and, most importantly, that we love each
other in different ways, yet all of them profound and eternal.

Become a “Chaver” and Join Our Caring Community
W
e all enjoy the times of celebration in our lives but
also must endure life’s difficult challenges. During
these periods, it’s nice to receive support from friends and
family as well as from our Temple community. Would you
like to be on the giving end of this caring community? We
excitedly invite you to become a “Chaver” and help support
fellow congregants in both good times and bad. Most of
the activities allow you to be on a “call list,” which means
you will be able to participate when you have the time and
inclination. Here are some of the ways you can serve:
• Deliver Shabbat bags to fellow congregants who
are facing challenges or who are recently home
following hospital stays
• Make weekly phone calls to wish our elderly
congregants Shabbat shalom
• Deliver bags for the High Holy Days to
congregants who have lost a family member in
the last year
• Be in touch with families who have kids in
college to help send High Holy Day and Passover
care packages
• Serve on a “shivah” committee and help grieving
families organize their post-funeral shivahs
• Deliver “Welcome to the World” bags for families
who have just had a baby

ix years ago they stood together on the bimah in the Marcia
Israel Chapel/Auditorium, sang “Hashkiveinu,” received
a blessing from Rabbi Leder, and graduated from Brawerman
Elementary School. On June 8 of this year, as new high school
graduates the Brawerman Class of 2009 attended their first
official alumni reunion event, which was held at the Irmas
Campus, where they enjoyed sushi and sharing memories.
Nadine Breuer, Brawerman Head of School, recalled
some of her memorable experiences with members of
this extraordinary group and expressed her pride in their
accomplishments. She told them how wonderful it was to see
the amazing, kind, and “menschy” people they have become,
and she wished them all the best of luck on the next steps in
their educational journeys.
Graduate Emily Lurie, who will be attending the
University of Pennsylvania in the fall, expressed what many
were feeling when she remarked, “It is so great to catch up with
classmates who I haven’t seen in six years and hear about their
plans for the future.”
We encourage all of our alumni (there are now 10 years of
graduates!) to stay in touch and remember that they will always
be part of the Brawerman family.
Glazer and Mann Early Childhood Centers
A Very Special Play Date
I
n June the Early Childhood Centers and our amazing Parent
Association hosted their first annual play date for new and
incoming children for both the Glazer and Irmas Campuses. The
event provided a wonderful opportunity for families to meet
and feel part of our school and temple community before the
start of the school year in September. New parents had a chance
to get reacquainted with the directors and to begin friendships
with other new as well as returning parents.
The children participated in a variety of activities,
including building with large, soft blocks from Imagination
Playground (designed to encourage learning, social
development, and movement); story time; gardening with our
horticultural specialist, Joan Borgman; and singing along with
our music teachers, Jen Shankman and Jason Mesches.

The big hit for the children was their soapy playtime
with Bubblemania, the creative bubble party company. It was a
wonderful morning for all and an incredibly successful inaugural
event. We are so excited to meet again when school starts in
September!
FREE HIGH HOLY DAY CHILD CARE
This year we are offering free High Holy Day child care
services for newborn babies through ages five years
old on the mornings of Rosh HaShanah and Yom
Kippur, September 14 and 23 respectively, from 8:30
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please RSVP by September 3 to

Camps
Come Ride with Us!
W
e’re gearing up for the Jewish Federation’s
Tour de Summer Camps cycling event this fall,
riding to raise funds for camp scholarships. The event
helps send children to Jewish summer camp, where they
can build lifelong connections to Jewish identity and
values. This is something the two of us know a great deal
about: we met at Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s own Camp Hess
Kramer in 1990, and we ride together in celebration of our
Leadership year, wedding anniversary, and family birthdays.
It was an amazing experience when we participated in the
event in 2013—reliving summer camp memories with more
than five hundred rowdy riders from Jewish sleep-away camps
from across the country and throughout Los Angeles. If you’re
looking for a new physical challenge, have fond summer camp
memories you’d like to celebrate, or just love to cycle along a
panoramic course, sign up and ride with us! Four routes will
be offered this year, including an 18-, 36-, 62-, and 100-mile
course, making it a fun activity for riders of a wide range of
cycling ability.
Team WBT Camps (and our boisterous team
captain Rabbi Eshel) provide cyclists with support: a training
schedule to get you ready, a practice ride six weeks prior to the
event, and a team jersey.

Bowl Soul Sounds/Shabbat Aglow event on the Irmas Campus field. Families loved their alfresco picnic while children
relished playtime with the Brawerman coaches. Finally, Cantors Don Gurney, Seth Ettinger, and song leader
Jason Mesches led musicians in a melodious Shabbat service enjoyed by all.
