INTRODUCTION
P
Every school speech therapist has the same dilemma. How do you fix your articulation
students’ stubborn and persistent vowel-R distortion? This type of student is able to
produce the /r/ sound in all positions of words except when it is preceded by a vowel
sound. These vowel + /r/ sounds present a serious roadblock to an otherwise successful
therapy plan. The severity of this type of distortion is so significant, and so apparent in the
students’ speech, that it must be addressed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Some
students never correct this vowel distortion during their years in elementary school
speech therapy and then must continue onto middle school with an articulation problem
that may impact their social and emotional growth.
R
WHY THE VOWEL + /r/ SOUND IS SO DIFFICULT
Each time a different vowel precedes the /r/, it changes how the sound must be produced.
Say the following vowel + /r/ words aloud and notice how each one is formed by your lips,
tongue, teeth, and palate: are; air; ear; earn; oar; and (unstressed-/r/) father.
E
When you teach these vowel + /r/ sounds as a group, rather than focusing on them as
individual sounds, your therapy becomes confusing and inefficient for the students. This
wastes valuable therapy time, provides insufficient drill, and prolongs the need for future
speech therapy.
V
PURPOSE OF THIS “EAR” (ɪr) BOOK
IE
There are many products on the market to teach the /r/ sound, but few of them offer a
total program for remediating specific vowel + /r/ distortions. Do you find yourself
borrowing a few pages here and there from multiple sources or even trying to create your
own worksheets in sufficient quantity to thoroughly teach and drill the “EAR” sound? Do
you have a library full of books, but only a small portion of the content is useful? Do you
spend too much time gathering appropriate curriculum that best suits the needs of your
students or do you feel that you are conducting the therapy sessions by the seat of your
pants because you are unprepared? This manual provides a complete course curriculum
for the “EAR” sound.
W
HOW TO USE THE MANUAL IN THE THERAPY SETTING
Your students begin the program by taking the test on page 4 to assess their ability to use
the “EAR” sound in words and sentences. This pre-test and post-test assessment tool will
serve as your periodic data collection as you move through the program. An additional
word test found on page 24 can be administered after the students have completed the
core vocabulary section of the manual.

P
The program begins with simple repetitions of a 16-word core vocabulary and progresses
through increasingly complex vocabulary and language drills encompassing phrases,
short sentences, complex sentences, question and answer drills, tongue twisters, simple
stories, and longer rebus stories. This therapy manual not only provides multiple speaking
opportunities, it requires your students to use thinking skills by incorporating the vowel
“EAR” in complex language activities. The full color illustrations and activities are so
engaging that your students will stay focused and willingly participate during the entire
therapy session.
R
This manual will provide approximately four months of material for weekly therapy
sessions. By the time your students complete all the activities in the book in addition to
consistently practicing the materials at home, they should master the “EAR” sound in the
therapy setting using conversational speech.
E
Many speech therapists like to conduct five-minute mini-sessions with their students
during the week in the students’ classrooms in addition to the more formal sessions in the
therapy room. Because this manual is already downloaded to your computer, you do not
need to worry about extra preparation or printing out materials. All you need is your
laptop to take from room to room.
V
It is NOT the purpose of this manual to instruct you how to teach the “EAR” sound. Your
education and experience has provided you with these skills; however, there are several
internet sites that offer specific tips on teaching vowel + /r/ sounds and are available for
your convenience at no charge.
IE
HOMEWORK
The activities in this manual are appropriate for homework once the students have
learned the correct production of the “EAR” sound in the therapy setting. Directions for
each individual activity are simple and clearly stated on every page and can be easily
practiced with a parent or caregiver. As the students practice at home, the activities will
provide excellent reinforcement of the skills you are teaching in your therapy program.
WHY I DEVELOPED THIS PROGRAM
W
This type of manual did not exist during most of my 35-year career as a school speech
therapist. A comprehensive program targeted on specific vowel + /r/ sounds would have
allowed me to provide a more focused therapy for my challenging articulation students.
I’m happy to offer this material to make your work as a speech therapist more productive,
efficient, and less frustrating. Thank you for purchasing this manual.
