I think Jim Morris said it best, “Oh What a Night! Oh What a Life! Oh What
a Party!” For those who were there, you know what I am talking about. For
those who were not there, all I can say is start planning now not to miss the
next Birthday Bash. You will find more on the party inside. I would like to
extend a huge thank you to all who worked so hard to make this year’s party
weekend a huge success – from your Board of Directors, our many members
who volunteered before and during the party, to all who donated or got
donations for our raffle and silent auction, to all our entertainers, and last but
not least, the Bentley’s Resort staff who worked very hard to make our stay
enjoyable.
Your new board has met for the first time, and we are getting busy planning
fun events for the upcoming year and everyone’s enjoyment. We hope for good
participation from you at everything planned. All of this and all of you being
there is what makes it worthwhile. We could always use some help in
planning and running events for the club, so if you have a willing spirit, call
or email us, and we will find a spot for you to be a greater part of your club.

to come for the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club!!
2nd Annual Parrot Head Cruise
Once again, it's time for another “Lovely
Cruise". Laura Dobkins and Patti Myles are planning
another "Parrot Head Cruise" on the brand new
Carnival Dream. The ship will depart from Port
Canaveral on Sept 3rd for a 7 day cruise to Cozumel,
Belize, Isla Roatan, and Costa Maya, Mexico. Please
contact Jose Arreaza at 800-819-3902 X 82308. Jose's work hours are Monday through Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. and Fridays 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Hope to see you on board.
Annual Itchitucknee Tubing Trip
We are finally ready to start getting things rolling on our
annual Ichetucknee Tubing Trip on Saturday, August 20th.
This trip is open to anyone and is an excellent event to bring
the keets along. Tubing the whole river is great! It takes
about 3 to 3½ hours and starts at the north entrance. The
north entrance limits number of tubers that can start from
there to 750 people. Please be sure you are in line at 8
a.m.! There is a shorter trip, which is about 1½ hour long for
those who don’t want to be in the water for 3+ hours. If you
are tubing, cost to get in park is $5.00 per person. The big
tube concession on the corner of SR 47 and 238, will deliver
tubes for large groups. There is a food concession at the
midway point, and their prices and food are good. They will
keep your car keys for $1.00. The Super 8 Motel in Lake City
is ready to take reservations. Please mention you are with the
Parrot Head group so that you get the reduced rate and are put in the reserved block of rooms.

Happenings
Did Someone Say, “Happy Hour?”
Who ever said Friday the 13th was unlucky? For over 60 Parrot
Heads, Friday, May 13th was very lucky. That was the day we
had our Happy Hour at the Bearded Clam Bar & Marina. It was
a beautiful evening with live music and special drink prices. We
even had a special drawing, where 45 lucky Parrot Heads got to
take a sunset cruise on the Floating Chapel. This was a truly
special Happy Hour. Many thanks go out to Jill and her entire
crew who made it all possible.
We did not have a have a Happy Hour in June, as it was the
weekend of our 15th Birthday Bash at Bentleys. Or you could
say we had a weekend of Happy Hours at Bentleys! We will be
having two Happy Hours per month during the summer. Check
your 5 O’clock Update for more details and start out your
weekend Parrot Head style.

Jimmy Buffett’s
Welcome to Fin Land Tour
Jimmy Buffett kicked off the “Welcome to Fin Land
Tour” and the first stop was right here in Tampa on
April 1, 2011 at the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre.
The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club flock packed up
and headed by car and bus to “Fin Land” for a beautiful
day of fun in the sun! Our coolers were overflowing
with plenty of food and drinks to share, and blenders
churning out Margaritas. We dressed and decorated our
Tailgate Party in true Parrot Head fashion. We partied
with old friends and made new ones! No concert would
be complete without the pre-concert “Meet and Greet”
with Peter Mayer, Uncle Jim Mayer, Michael Utley,
Doyle Grisham and Nadirah Shakoor signing autographs and posing for pictures with us. Jimmy took the
stage at 8:00 p.m. and many said it was one of his best
musical sets ever. It was a great day spent with the
greatest people in the world!

Everyone has a Story – Parrot Head Profiles
This is part two of the interviews concerning the Boat Captains of the Parrot Head Navy. For years they have given
their time and their boats to transport our club from port to island, or where ever the call may be. These are their
stories.

CAPTAIN PAUL DAMICO, AKA: THE CAT HERDER
Paul has had pontoon boats for about 25 years. It is the only kind of boat he has
ever had. His first pontoon was in the Indian River Inlet which gave him quick
access to Rehoboth Bay in Delaware. He prefers pontoon boats because of their
flexibility. He can fish with them, but he can also entertain friends. Paul names his
boats; they have all been named “MarTgoQ” for his son, Marty, his daughter,
Margo and his wife Susie Q. He is currently on “MarTgoQ 3.”
Paul likes the family aspects of a pontoon boat. His family was raised on the boat,
learning to crab and fish at an early age, and later tubing with their friends kept
them busy as teenagers. These days he goes fishing during the week with family
and friends, but on weekends he has been known to “herd a few cats” while
cruising around the inlets on “MarTgoQ 3!”
CAPTAIN BOB SMITH, “COMMANDER” OF THE PARROT HEAD NAVY
Bob can’t remember not having a boat. He was born and raised on the “other side”
of Florida where the water is clear, not brown. Bob graduated from the University
of Florida, and is a Marine Mechanic. He feels when you get Larry, A.J. and
himself together on boats it is more like the “Redneck Yacht Club” than the Parrot
Head Navy. He likes smaller boats, ones you can fish on and dive from. The
thought of sleeping on a boat doesn’t intrigue him, so he will stick with the smaller
ones. He said if it doesn’t fit on a trailer, he doesn’t want it!
CAPTAIN JIM O’SHEA, CABANA BOY WANNA BE
I couldn’t do a Boat Captain series without including my first contact with the
Parrot Head Navy, Captain Jim. Jim was in the Navy (I mean the real Navy), but
has had boats since 1982. He got his last boat in 2003, and was in the Parrot Head
Navy for 7 years. He enjoyed taking members back and forth to the islands. It
gave him an opportunity to meet new people. He says it’s always a good day on
the water. He recently sold his boat to his son-in-law on the Jersey Shore, and has
had a few thoughts about buying a couple of Ski-doos. His ambitions have
changed from Boat Captain to “Cabana Boy”. You go Jim!

Alzheimer’s Golf Tournament
THE 10TH ANNUAL
PARROT HEAD OPEN
ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION
BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT
October 8th is another big day for our club. We will be
holding our 10th Annual Alzheimer’s Association
Benefit Golf Tournament. That is right! Our 10th golf
outing will be on the 8th of October. Last year the golf
outing raised over $2,500 to benefit The Alzheimer’s
Association. This year we would like to have more
golfers and a larger party after the golf to exceed last
year’s total. So come along and join the fun. Sign up to
play or just come to the party after golf for food, music
and raffle prizes. Golf this year will be back at
Sarasota Golf Course with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start.
After golf we move to Twin Lakes Park where golfers
and non-golfers can meet for burgers, dogs, pulled
pork sandwich and all the fixins. The party at Twin
Lakes is a BYOB even and is open to all golfers, their
guest, and all club members. Twin Lakes Park is on
Clark Road just east of I-75.

SBPHC Survivor Games VIII
Yes, even the Green Envy, the notorious last place
contestants of the 2011 Survivor Games, not only
survived, but thrived. This was the first experience as a
play group that we three musketeers had with our loving,
peaceful Parrot Heads, and what a true vacation get-away among local friends it was. Holly Zuchelli, Jimmy
Pyle and I were especially enchanted by the visuals and
props that mocked the TV series. This is serious stuff
that our leader Al Palumbo comes up with including a
tiki torch lighting ceremony to the theme song as our
Master of Ceremony arrived in his ripped villain t-shirt.
My favorite vision was the barge cruising to the island
with all those happy colorful people who truly know
how to love life and one another. Honestly, the journey
to all the wonderful events that day was as fulfilling as
the games themselves. When I got off the boat at the
island, Jimmy was introducing himself to members of
our green handkerchief club, one of which was our most
beautiful Jane. Oh yeah he did the "I Jim. You Jane,” to
which she politely said she had NEVER heard that
before. And of course I really was scared that Victor was
going to biatch slap me if I dropped one more domino,
but alas in the end there were none left. The only
negative was the Jello and, well, I guess I should say that
if it would have contained alcohol I would not have been
so scared of germs (at least that is my story, and I’m
stickin’ to it). In the end we had a blast surviving
Survivor!

SBPHC 15th Birthday Bash – “License to Chill”
It was my “First Look”
Yeah, we definitely “SWALLOWED THE HOOK”
as the song goes. For my wife and me this was a whole new
experience with a whole new group of friends we’ve met
through the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club. Since we joined
earlier this year, we have made many new friends and have
been welcomed with open arms into the club. It started out
great because this was the first weekend that we have had to
ourselves without our children in tow for many years. This
was just the beginning, and will most certainly not the last
birthday bash we for which will be in attendance.
It seemed as though everyone was kicking off the
weekend right! People were having one heck of a time hooting
and hollering in the pool to the music of DJ Albert. Then, we
all got a great workout with “Homemade Wine” in the
ballroom.
Then there was Saturday…the best day of all!! There
was nowhere to go and nowhere to be, and for most of us in
our busy life, that was just what the Beach Bum in us all really
needed! You had your choice of relaxating poolside to the
music of The Calypso Nuts, Jell-O Shot Volleyball, the
absolutely hilarious Frozen T-shirt contest, and my personal
favorite, the Mixology Contest. Best of all, these were just the
morning and early afternoon festivities. Later, we had Eric
Stone and the band on stage and some more fun in the pool
with games like Hands in the Pants and the declaration of the
official “Parrot Head Day” by the Sarasota County
Commissioner himself. Then after all of this, we had a great
meal served in the ballroom (which most of us brought back
outside to keep an eye on the fun and an ear on the band).
It was “time for a TEAM DRINK” and a withdrawal
from the “Bank of Bad Habits”. You just never knew what
you would find around the corner. You might have migrated
to your room to put on your nice, bright “TOGA” with a
hidden surprise underneath! Maybe you listened to some more
great music from Jim Asbell & The Tropiholics who played
well into the wee hours of the morning. We also had round
two of the Chinese raffle and the silent auction. For those who
did not get to see the spread of goodies displayed for the night,
you really missed out. This was followed up by several afterparties, more great food from the “Tailgate Bar and Grill” by
Capt. Larry.
And then it happened. Sunday came, which meant
that for most of us the party would soon be over and reality
would soon take its hold once more. Though many of us clung
to the weekend as long as we could, we hung around to listen
to the great music of Brent Burns and had a few more drinks.
Thank you to everyone who made this great weekend
possible for all of us, no matter how big or how small a role
you think you played. Every little effort always counts for
something. Now off to “Meeting of the Minds!” Key West,
here we come!

SBPHC 15th Birthday Bash – “License to Chill”
Drink Mixology Contest
What is the best contest to enter at the Birthday Bash? It is the Drink
Mixology Contest! Not only do you get to mix your favorite cocktail –
you get to sample everyone else’s drink too!
We had 8 “Mixologists” compete in this year’s contest. The
competition was stiff, but our panel of 5 seasoned judges, after coming
back several times to refresh our memories and taste buds, were able to
pick a winner. It was very close, so we had to sample two of them at
least three times!
In the end, Sarah Bonneau won with her “Pineapple Upside-down
Martini”. Running a close second was Terry Varvil with his Frozen
“Varvaritta”, and coming in third was John Russsell – I can’t
remember what he made (too much sampling) but it was very good!

Parrot Head Pineapple
Upside-Down Martini
1 ½ oz. vanilla vodka
1 ½ oz. pineapple juice
Grenadine
Cherry for garnish
Graham cracker (crushed)
Add vodka and pineapple juice
in a martini shaker full of ice
and shake well. Rim your
martini glass with crushed
graham cracker. Strain vodka
and pineapple mix into the
glass (straight up). Drop the
cherry and a little bit of
grenadine into the bottom of
the glass. The grenadine will
sink to the bottom giving the
drink the look of a pineapple
upside-down cake!

SBPHC 15 Birthday Bash Sponsors and Donators
Island Cleanup
On Saturday, February 12th we had 62 brave souls volunteer for the
first clean up of the year. It was a little chilly to start but once we got
everyone signed in the Parrot Head Navy Captains AJ, Bob, Brett,
Rob, Larry, and John kindly transported the volunteers to Edwards
Island to get to work.
In addition to our club members there were some members from the
Riverview High School Marine club. They helped out a lot and
enjoyed the cookout. The islands were pretty clean except for the
usual bottles and cans and some pieces of wood. After the clean up
we all enjoyed our cookout. Once again, Dave and Phil amazed us
with their culinary skills and we chowed down on burgers and hot
dogs.
We also put two new signs up. One in the area we always have the
cookout and the other on the south beach. These signs are from the
county with rules of the island and states that we, the Sarasota Bay
Parrot Head Club are the caretakers.
As the afternoon continued on, people were heading to the shore. We
collected 30 bags of garbage, some large pieces of wood and a plastic
garbage can. Thank you all who helped. It was a job well done.

The SBPHC Environmental Corner
AUGUST 6, 2011 at 9:00 A.M.
It’s that time of year again for our participation in the Seagrass Survey!
This is a fun filled day of learning about the three kinds of seagrass that are found in Sarasota Bay
waters, how important they are in maintaining a balanced, healthy ecosystem in the bay, and helping
Sarasota County scientists determine the status of this precious substrate.
This event kicks off with an educational lecture out on the same islands off the Siesta Key north bridge
where we do our island cleanups. Amanda Dominguez from Sarasota County will educate us about
how to identify the three different kinds of seagrass and then will provide us with the tools we need to
carry out the survey including Aquascopes and waterproof maps and data sheets.
We will be signing people up for this event at the July 28th social meeting and will be looking for boat
captains, people willing to get into the water to observe the seagrass, and people that can be on a boat
to record the data. If you have kayaks, this is a perfect activity to do in a kayak as well as a larger boat.
This is an all day event so be sure to pack chairs for the lecture as well as snacks, lunch, beverages,
etc.
Also, once you have been educated and have the tools to collect data, you are free to go out on your
own any time during the month of August and hand in your data to Sarasota County.

Pop Tops/Pull Tabs: Don’t throw them away! Save them
all and bring them to the monthly meetings. We collect them
and turn them in for cash which is donated to Alzheimer’s
Association towards our Memory Walk Fundraising. Just
another reason to drink more beer and Party with a Purpose!!!
This is an announcement only forum to promote
SBPHC activities and other Parrot Head Club events
we think our members may be interested in. We do
not post private parties, yard sales, individual
businesses, Non-Parrot Head Club events, musician
schedules, candle parties, house parties, etc. There
are many places you can surf the web to find these
things without the club overloading your mailbox.
You can also join the National Parrot head email
group to keep up with all things Parrot Head. Send an
email to: PHIP-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and tell
them you are a member of the Sarasota Bay Parrot
Head Club.
Ink Cartridges: What do you do with your empty ink
cartridges? Bring them to the next meeting, we collect
these and donate them to local schools that get $3.00 per
cartridge for school supplies.
The “Not Bored” of Directors meets the 2nd Wednesday of
each month. If you have any ideas that you would like the
board to look into, please contact any Board Member with
your thoughts. Volunteers are always needed. If you are
interested in getting more involved, please let us know!

meet by the big tree on the south end of the beach about one hour before
sunset on the third Tuesday of every month. So, bring your coolers,
chairs, frisbees, munchies and celebrate Florida’s beautiful sunset.
