The Parrot Head Press A bimonthly publication reporting the news and fun going on with The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club, Inc. Volume 14 ~ Issue 26 ~ November and December 2010 Message in a Bottle Sarasota Bay PHC 2010-2011 “Not Bored” of Directors Executive Board: Al Palumbo – 941.224.6830 President Patti Myles – 941.727.0889 Vice President Beth Palumbo – 941.758.2070 Secretary Rich Myles – 941.727.0889 Treasurer Dave Carpenter – 941.379.8991 Past President The end of the year is coming up fast, and the board is already busy planning fun events for 2011, but we still have more fun to be had and charities to help before we get there. The Golf Tournament and Memory Walk were both huge successes with over $6,000 raised! A big team drink goes out to all of those who golfed, walked, donated, and helped to coordinate these events. Job well done! Coming up is the super bowl of Parrot Head events, Meeting of the Minds in Key West. If you have never had a chance to go, you really need to go at least once, and I guarantee you won’t be sorry. So to all of you, who are going this year, see you at the club’s Bloody Mary Mornin’ party at the Hogs Breath on Friday morning, and I hope to see the rest of you making plans for next year. Our last event of the year is our club’s Christmas Party to benefit “Toys for Tots”. So when you go shopping, pick up some toys and join in on the fun and great music that Patti and her committee have put together. Let’s close out this year with a bang and get set for next year. With the new year, it is my hope that more of our club’s members, both old and new, will come out to different events, parties, fundraisers and community service projects and be a part of what it means to “Party with a Purpose”. Your new year will be better for it. Happenings Did Someone Say, “Happy Hour?” Wow, did we ever have some fantastic Happy Hours these past two months! In September we were at the Hololuana Grill in Venice. We had a great time dancing, singing and enjoying the drink specials made especially for our group. The October Happy Hour was held on Anna Maria Island at the Gulf Café’s new tiki bar. If you missed this one, you missed one of the best happy hours we have ever had. It was a beautiful fall night, right on the beach, with music supplied by Mike Sales. The sunset was incredible; if you were looking close you even saw the elusive “green flash”. Our next Happy Hour will be on November 12th from 5-7 p.m. at Trader Vic’s. They have great Happy Hour pricing for drinks and appetizers. The outside deck is always fun, but too crowded to save for us. So, if you get there early, ask them to put a very big table together! There will be an area reserved inside for us with live entertainment on the deck starting at 7 p.m. The December Happy Hour on the 10th is in the works, so stay tuned! By: Sherry Swartz SBPHC Annual Peace River Canoe Float The canoe trip on October 2nd was a little different this year. We had 26 people in 12 canoes floating down the river. This year’s group had several newcommers to the river! There were a few team drinks (as always) and most of the group ate lunch in the usual spot. Several adults and most of the kids had a blast playing on the rope swing on the other side of the river from the beach at which we stopped for lunch. Then it was back to the canoes for a nice relaxing afternoon. The difference this year was we all didn't tie up together and float as one big barge. I found it to be a nice change and a great way to tune into the beautiful natural surroundings of Florida. My son Jack and I saw 4 turtles, 1 alligator, several birds, a dear, and a snake. So, as usual, the canoe trip was a fun way to spend a day with some Parrot Head friends while enjoying the serenity of Florida’s nature. And we even got to meet some new friends along the way. If you weren’t able to make it out this year, be sure to join the flotilla next year!! By: John Pollock ALL MEMBERS ARE INVITED! Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2010 Our final total according to Alzheimer's Association was $6854, which placed us 3rd for Top Group in PHIP and 4th place for Overall Top Teams category. Once again we received the award for most walkers. Our total was somewhere between 60-65 walkers. Great job!! Counting Parrot Heads is always confusing. Congratulations SBPHC for another successful walk. I would like to personally thank all of my committee members for their teamwork and a job well done! By: KatieGirl It was a beautiful October morning with the full moon hovering above the Sailor statue and the rising sun coming up over Sarasota Bay. I just knew it was going to be a great day at Lido Beach for the biggest charity which our Club donates to – the Alzheimer's Association. Our top donation was raised by the Bench family. In honor of Shayne Bench's birthday his family surprised him by raising $1,580 and showing up to walk. What a wonderful way to celebrate his birthday. Shayne took 6th place in overall Top Participants for this walk. An honorable mention must go out to Gary and Sharon Campbell who raised $860! Thanks for continuously supporting this cause every year...way to go!!! Thank you to our Golf Tournament Sponsors! And Congratulations to Our Winners!! Alzheimer’s Golf Tournament THE 9TH ANNUAL PARROT HEAD OPEN Q. Were can you go to see Bonnie and Clyde with the Keystone Cops complete with their escape vehicles right next to Maryann, Gilligan and the Skipper too with their traveling Tiki Hut and attached bar? A. The 9th Annual SBPHC Golf Outing to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association held Saturday, October 9th of course! 70 golfers and nongolfers showed up on a beautiful fall day at the Sarasota Golf Club to chase that little white ball around, down a few brews and have a lot of laughs along the way. After the golfing was finished we all headed to Twin Lakes Pavilion for a BBQ, raffles, tunes by Albert, and awards ceremony. The best dressed prize went to Jim and Lynn O’Shay and Mary and RC Ryan, dressed up as the Bonnie and Clyde group. Coming in a close second was Mike Fontaine (who made a darn cute Maryann!) and the Skipper, John Matson with their traveling Tiki Bar. I can’t really tell you who won the outing, but we all know the real winner is the Alzheimer’s Association of Sarasota! We do party with a purpose, raising over $2000.00 which was donated to the Alzheimer’s Association on Saturday, October 23rd at the Memory Walk. Thank you for a job well done to the organizers of the event, Rich and Patti Myles, and also to Dick and Laura Dobkins who ran the raffle and BBQ. A special thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who made this event possible. By: Sherry Swartz 1st Annual Croozin’ & Boozin’ Parrot Head Cruise The brochure says, “A glorious ship offering pools on deck, water slide, miniature golf, luxury dining 24 hours a day, a casino, fitness center, spa, night clubs, entertainment...” The itinerary boasts the Cayman Islands kissed by sparkling, turquoise waters; a dream come true for watersports enthusiasts with excursions including snorkeling with stingrays, scuba diving, sport fishing, and the magnificent Seven Mile Beach. And then off to Cozumel, Mexico, with available excursions to Mayan ruins lost in time, any number of seaside activities, marketplaces and open-air dining. So, how did forty two Sarasota Bay Parrot Heads fit into to all this opulence? Well, we started off by sneaking more contraband onto the ship then Hitler took out of France. After months of research, and nearly a dozen pre-cruise parties, we masterfully smuggled on enough booze to set up our own bar. Like a bunch of high schoolers planning how to spike the Prom punch, we managed to beat the systems. Oh, there were a few members that had some of their nectar confiscated, but those who payed attention in “Bootleg 101” class, taught by Randy Styrk and Jeff Wieland, passed with out a hitch. On our first day at sea we captured the better part of the upper deck where we could watch the activities and concentrate on the music, the sun, and REAL boat drinks. Hurricane Matthew heard we were coming and he quickly got out of our way. For a while we thought Key West would be a substitute stop, but we sailed towards the Cayman Islands at full steam. At Grand Cayman rough seas and overcast skies thwarted our plans to snorkel Cemetery Beach, but a few brave souls got their feet wet. Most were wetting their whistles at the other end of the island with Landshark at Margaritaville. That night was Formal Night, an opportunity to dress up for dinner and enjoy the all-you-can-eat lobster and prime rib. We were honored with the presence of Thurston Howell, III and his lovely wife at dinner. Our Maitre d’ acknowledged the competition and decided to join in with us rather than compete with us. Each night thereafter, he made a special appearance in our midst to tell jokes or check on our accommodations. Mr. Styrk showed us the way to get our money’s worth each evening by consuming mass quantities of food. His records include 3 lobsters and 2 prime ribs on Formal Night and on the last night he had a record seven appetizers, and then two entrees. He is such a "good eater." We had Parrot Heads singing Karaoke, competing in Mixology, zipping down the water slide, Parrot Heads everywhere! Fortytwo of us must have seemed like hundreds to the other passengers and crew. When we awoke day three we were in Mexico. The weather cooperated and gave us a beautiful sunny day as we watched rain clouds circle the island. Some of the group went on a boat, others to the Mayan ruins. Several folks went to a beach to snorkel and drink with the locals. Later in the day everyone either ended up at Margaritaville, Carlos and Charlies or the No Name Bar (some, all of thee above). Cozumel, can you say, "Parrot Heads"? One more day of upper-deck partying, gambling, dancing and singing and we were soon pulling into Tampa Bay. There were sunburns and some hangovers, but if I had to describe the trip in five words or less I would say it was a “Birthday Party on the Water.” How cool is that? If you were not able to go this year, you won't want to miss the next one. I know I'll be there! By: Dick Dobkins 1st Annual Croozin’ & Boozin’ Parrot Head Cruise WE ARE PLANNING A CRUISE FROM PORT CANAVERAL TO COZUMEL, BELIZE, ISLA ROATAN AND COSTA MAYA ON SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2011 FOR A 7-DAY CRUISE ON THE BRAND NEW "CARNIVAL DREAM”. The Relay for Life (RFL) is the American Cancer Society’s signature event. It is a unique event that offers communities an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. The overnight Relays are an 18 hour event. We are looking for 10 to 15 people who are willing to camp out at Sarasota High School on April 9th, 2011. The commitment will involve raising a minimum donation of $100.00 per person, helping in fund raising events to raise donations for the team, and a willingness to camp out that evening in order to help keep one walker on the track the entire 18 hours. This is a very rewarding and emotional event to participate in. RFL represents the hope that those who face cancer will be supported, those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, and one day cancer will be eliminated. For more information on this inspiring event go to www.relayforlife.com. If you are interested in becoming a RFL team member on the SBPHC team, please contact Sherry at bburggolf@aol.com or 941-358-0281.
