Finals week is now upon you all, and we wish you the best of
luck! To those graduating on Saturday, we applaud you for
your countless hours of effort put into getting to this point. We
wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Also, to those of
you who will still be fighting strong come the fall semester,
enjoy your break. Summer is a time to enjoy your family and
friends. You have all worked hard and we look forward to seeing you again at events and at the Honors House. Lastly, to our
faculty, we thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.
Without you all, this program would not be possible. You have
put in so many hours to improve our program and help our
students. We hope you all have a wonderful summer as well.
Student Research Conference

Jane Stephens Honors Program
The Student Research Conference was held on April 22nd and 23rd in the University
Center. This was a chance for students to present any research they have done. At this
year’s conference, there were several honors students who presented individually or
with a group. One of these students has provided us with a little insight into what his
presentations were about and why he chose to present at the SRC. We hope to see more
honors students’ smiling faces presenting at the SRC next year. Thank you to everyone
who represented our program and put their best foot forward.
Honors Students who Presented
I believe the SRC helps to spread
knowledge that students are truly
passionate about in a way that
helps everyone prepare for the
world post-graduation.

Brady is a sophomore this year majoring in psychology.
While here are SEMO has been involved in Residence Hall
Assiciation, Student Government, Preident’s Leadership
Academy, Emerging Leaders, CSIS, and faculty research
among many other things. Brady presented two separate
topics at the SRC this past April, the second being with a
group.
"Effect of Alcohol on Adolescent Brains and Adolescent Cognitive Development"-This presentation
covered the short term and long terms effects that
Chronic Intermittent exposure can have on adolescent brain development. It was the culmination of
what began as an honor's contract project and
grew into more than that.

Faculty Spotlight: Mr. Paul Thompson
STUDENTS
Perhaps one of the most intriguing members of the Honors
faculty, Professor Paul Thompson, studied at the London College of Music in the heart of London for three years and obtained
his BM in Music Performance
there. Later on, he received his
Master’s degree in Music at the
University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and has been teaching
here at Southeast Missouri State
University for 24 years. He
teaches quite an array of classes,
from applied flute lessons to Britain and the Brits, and as a music
professor can usually be found at
the River Campus. One of the
things he likes best about the
Honors Program is meeting all
the students because “they are
absolutely lovely!” Professor
Thompson also enjoys reading
questions at the trivia nights.
Other things he is involved with
on campus include teaching music lessons and some committee
work, but most of his activities
circle around music because of
how demanding it is: there are
many practices and many recitals to attend. Outside of the college, he has many activities he
uses to unwind, such as watching
soccer and other sports
(especially cricket), reading,
cooking, and going on walks. He
is quite frequently at the Honors
events, so don’t be afraid to say
hi; he’ll be the one with a British
accent!
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING WITH THE HONORS MOVE-IN

Student Spotlight: Jesse Weyand
Jesse Weyand is set on track to graduate in December 2015. He is a biology education major from Fredericktown, MO who one day hopes to become a high
school biology teacher. As you can already tell, Jesse is a brave soul. While here
at SEMO he has been involved in the Jane Stephens Honors Program, First-year
Leadership Program, Emerging Leaders, the Student Honors Council, the Baptist
Student Center Executive Board, Presidential Ambassadors, and served as a
Resident Assistant for three years along with many other things. Jesse has upheld the image of a prime honors student. This image was honored by his election for the Jane Stephens Honors Program Exempli Gratia Award. Jesse has
been a huge asset to this program and we can’t wait to see what he is able to do.
His drive and compassion are what sets him apart from many other students
across campus. We are lucky we were blessed enough to have his as a member
of our program.
This Year in Review
We’ve all been working hard for nine months on countless homework assignments both big and small. We’ve taken tests, written papers, gone to meetings, been late to class, maybe some of you even skipped, but regardless, we’ve all made it to the last
couple days of school. This year many honors students have joined us at our events and we would like to thank each and every
one of you. We look forward to seeing returning and new faces at the events next year. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the
first newsletter of the Fall semester in order to mark your calendars for the upcoming events! We have provided some photos
from this year’s events. We hope you enjoy them!
Thank you to everyone who
helped move freshman in last
semester.
If anyone is interested in helping with
Move-In Day as a volunteer for the
Honors Program please contact Suzanna Tullos at sctullos1s@semo.edu as
soon as possible.

We would like to thank everybody who has supported the Honors Program during this past year. There
have been bumps in the road as there always will be, but with the help of those around us, we have pulled
through. The Student Honors Council has worked hard to make sure everybody enjoys their time in the
program. The 2014-2015 council has now passed the torch off to the newly elected Student Honors Council. Keep your eyes and ears open for future events the Student Honors Council holds.
