Link to TDP and seminars Oct-Nov Update on the Governance Code as follows: Since the Code Launch on June 28th, over 200 charities have committed to adopting the code. Carmichael Centre adopted the code shortly after the launch. The Working Group which oversaw the development of the Code has established two sub-committees to develop the Code further. One is working on gaining full accreditation of the code with the Swift 3000 national standards authority. The other is actively communicating the Code’s existence to strategic stakeholders in state and other funding and representative bodies together with the full range of C &V organisations across the country. There are also a number of training and support events available over the Autumn including “Implementing the Governance Code”, a one day course delivered by the Carmichael Centre on 9 October. Details and booking on http://www.carmichaelcentre.ie/trpath/implementing-governance-code. Having become the first organisation in Ireland to receive the PQASSO Quality Mark Level 1, Carmichael Centre started the process of implementing Level 2 in June 2012. Level 2 demands a more strategic approach to achieving aims and objectives. We also need to document our policies and procedures, and focus more on monitoring results, with a greater focus on demonstrating our outcomes, i.e. the difference we make for our service users. Social media and advocacy Social media can be both a powerful tool and a time consuming diversion for social justice advocates. Internationally and in Ireland online advocacy has been used as an effective strategy for influencing change, but social media for social justice is not without its critics. Can digital strategies be counter-productive, alienating decision makers and the public? Is e-advocacy an effective tool in raising awareness and changing minds? How inclusive is online networking for those living in poverty and social exclusion? How effectively do online petitions activate those interested in taking action for social change? Many of these questions were discussed at The Advocacy Initiative's 2nd Knowledge Exchange Forum in July. A report of the workshops, including our top ten tips for using social media, along with videos of the speakers are available at: http:// www.advocacyinitiative.ie/learn/tools/ videoknowledge.html Dyspraxia Dyspraxia Cycling Classes Sunday October 7th Booking Essential Learn How to Cycle or improve your cycling Cost: €20 per child Please contact Faye on 01—8747085 to Book!! The theme of National Parents Week 2012 is ‘Making a Special Moment’ The idea behind the week is to celebrate the role of parenting. We invite any person or organisation that works with children or families, as a parent or guardian, or as a professional to run an event to celebrate the week. Let us know what you are doing – we will put it on our website. Some ideas for events include: a cup of tea with your members, pamper days for parents, talks on parenting, art competitions, conference….. anything that highlights and celebrates the important role parents and people that support parents play. ‘Making a Special Moment’ – this year we are encouraging parents to do something special that doesn’t cost a lot but that will create a ‘special moment or memory’ for their children. Some ideas include: walk in the park, kick up the autumn leaves, picnic (with umbrellas if it’s raining), create a memory box, watch a special tv programme together, write a letter to a grandparent….. the list is endless. Contact Parentline at 01 8787230 or info@parentline.ie for more details. Children in Hospital At the launch of the Joels Restaurant Kids Charity Calendar Drawing Competition from left to right: Pat Kenny, Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Anyta Richardson, CHI Volunteer Support Team; Mary O’Connor, CHI CEO and Jason Sherlock, Business Manager, Louis Fitzgerald Hotel. Mary O’Connor, Children in Hospital Ireland – one of Ireland’s leading sick children’s charities – at the launch of the competition said “CHI is delighted to be associated with Joels Kids Charity Calendar Drawing Competition 2012. The competition focuses on what children of all ages love to do – draw and make marks. The competition will stimulate children’s imagination, focusing their creative efforts on their favourite month of the year.” Mary continued “Joels Kids Drawing Competition will help sick children in hospitals in Dublin and throughout the country by supporting CHI’s hard working volunteers from the organisation’s PlayWell service. PlayWell volunteers provide play sessions for hospitalised children throughout the country every day. Play helps sick children cope by providing the fun and activities they love. As a normal activity in an abnormal situation play, helps children make friends, it distracts and reduces their nervousness, and definitely helps them get better faster. “The Joels Kids Drawing Competition is a wonderful example of children helping children. So pick up a free entry form from Joels Restaurant, from the Children in Hospital Ireland office or from the PlayWell group in your local hospital. On the back of your entry form, draw a picture of your favourite month. Send your completed form back to Joels Restaurant or to Children in Hospital Ireland before the 28th October. Your wonderful picture will help children in hospitals everywhere.” Smashing Times The Memory Project 2012-2014 An innovative arts programme using drama, theatre and a television documentary to deal with the past and build pathways for the future and to promote peace, reconciliation and mutual understanding in Northern Ireland and the Southern Border Counties.
