The 2nd Galileo Hall of Merit Induction Dinner on March 19 th at the Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf is going to
be an exciting event. The inductees represent diverse fields of achievement. We are blessed with such
fine examples of alumni. The venue is ample and well located. Make your reservations early to
guarantee your place. See the flyer in this issue.
The SF Alumni Council met in November. Galileo was the host. The Council is for the benefit of all high
schools in San Francisco, and it promotes respect not rivalry. Some of the ideas presented and discussed
were fundraisers, recruiting young alumni and participation of PTSA, faculty, staff and students.
Representing Galileo were Charlene Mori, Joe Scafidi, Cordy Surdyka, Toni Allesandra, Barbara
LaRocca and Sisvan Der Harootunian. Gal’s new Principal Michael Reimer gave an informative visual
presentation of our school. The group meets periodically at different high schools.
At the Big Game in November, two former Galileo basketball teammates, Jim Dresser and I, tailgated
before the game in Palo Alto. Jim went to Stanford, I to Cal. (See photo)
America has a fascination with cars. At November’s SF Auto Show there was a honey of a car, the
highlight of the show, a Pagani (see photo). The namesake used to design for Lamborghini.
I like foods that are white in color, such as peaches and nectarines, corn, and asparagus. The latter,
which is popular and abundant in Spain, is occasionally available at Safeway.
Motion in Art: I’ve always liked art that shows motion. I bought Leonard Creo’s “Catch” many years
ago. It shows a young girl reaching upwards to catch a ball which is not in the painting. Antes Colon, a
Puerto Rican artist, did a wire sculpture of Mary Poppins with her umbrella dangling from a wire as well
as a matador and a bull. Recently I commissioned a street artist in Key West to make me a bull out of
wire, which he finished in 15 minutes. I have a painting of a balloon on a ribbon rising in the air by Tak,
a local artist (see photo). Degas is a good example of a painter who drew ballet dancers in motion. Over
the years I have asked artists to draw me a picture of wind. Wind can be heard, but not seen. Although
at least three have taken the challenge, no one has come up with an acceptable picture. They have shown
the effects of wind, but not wind itself. Am I asking for the impossible? I think not. After all, the motion
of lines and color in abstract art or lines of wire or strings of thread would satisfy my challenge.
The 3 Monsters I grew up with: Horror movies were a staple of the 30s and the 40s. The best scary
creatures (before Lucasfilm’s creations) were Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolf Man.

them like that anymore.

Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what happening at Galileo these days.
NEW MURAL OF GALILEO OUTSIDE THE MAIN OFFICE
After months of planning a beautiful mural of Galileo, the mathematician, scientist and physicist, is now in
progress in the portico area outside the main office. Bill Weber, a well-known muralist, is the artist planning
and painting the mural. The scene in this mural is of Galileo viewing the heavens through a telescope as he sits
on his balcony overlooking the city of Florence, Italy, where he was held under “house arrest” for his strong
belief that the sun is the center of the universe and our planet, Earth, revolves around the sun. The city of
Florence is shown in the mural as well. The official title of the mural is “Galileo, the Scientist.”
The Class of 2014 along with their sponsors, Cassie Gamm, Heather O’Connor and Woody Smith contributed
$5,000 to this project. Galileo PTSA, under the leadership of President Jim Fong (Class of 1968) is also helping
to fund the mural.
Plans are in the works for 2 more murals in the portico area: Galileo, The School" wall mural, and the
"Universe" ceiling mural that connects the 2 wall murals. In addition, there is a plan to sell stars to individuals
that will be placed on the “Universe” ceiling mural. Look for an update on this project in the next edition.
UPDATE ON WILLIAMS SONOMA CIRCLE THE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Our wonderful friends at Williams Sonoma just keep on giving to our faculty and staff. For the winter holidays,
they presented each member of our staff with a festive tin of their Holiday Bark candy. This month (January)
they are offering the first in a series of Cooking Demonstrations in their beautiful test kitchen right down the
street from us. Our cheerleaders will open one of their sales associate meetings in January as well.
SUPER BOWL 50 EVENT AT GALILEO
On Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 10:00am – 2:00pm “See if you are a Pro or a Joe” event will take place on
the Galileo Athletic Field from 10:00am – 2:00pm. All are invited to come and watch or play a round of touch
football with NFL Super Bowl Champs Steven Smith, Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith, and their NFL friends
in a fun game of touch football. Interested people can enter to play as an individual sign up or with a team of
your own group of players. Teams will be allowed up to 6 players. The Champions will win cool PRIZES! All
proceeds will go towards benefiting the Smith Bros P.L.A.Y. Foundation (http://www.smithbrosplay.org)

SAD NEWS
Denise LeBiavant, beloved French teacher and World Language Department Chair, passed away in late
December after a short but very serious illness. A memorial mass and reception were held in her honor on
Saturday, January 9, 2016. Many members of the Galileo Family attended, including many retirees. . .
.Margaret Chiu, Patsy Watts, Eleanor Mar-Beshears, Marie Eisen, Madelaine Eaton, Leslie Hughes, and those
who have transferred to other schools. . . .Katie Pringle, Nancy Lambert, Lea Ramsey to name a few. One of
Denise’s sons kept us in good spirits remembering Denise with his stories of her life as a mother and a teacher.
We also learned during the Mass that Denise served in the Peace Corps in Africa and that is where she met her
husband. Denise leaves behind her husband of many years, a daughter, 3 sons and 3 grandchildren.
CELEBRATING GALILEO’S 95 YEARS CONCERT
“A Night in Winter Wonderland”: On Saturday, January 30, 2016, Galileo will host a Winter Concert featuring
“Jest Jammin,” celebrating 95 Years (1921 - 2016) in the Galileo Auditorium. The show will also feature
Galileo Lion Dancers, Galileo Digital Arts Media Video, Singer Sheryl Ann Padre, Galileo Hip Hop Dancers
and “The Substitutes,” Galileo’s Live Faculty/Staff Band.The show starts at 6:30 PM. Tickets will be sold at
door -- adults $20 & students $10. Proceeds will go to Galileo extracurricular activities and rental of the Bill
Graham Civic Auditorium for 2016 Graduation.
JROTC
Our JROTC program has been doing well this year including volunteering at a number of events, and we
will continue throughout the school year. During the fall semester we volunteered at marathons such as the SF
Giants Race, the Nike Women's Marathon, and also we came together during the summer to do the San
Francisco Marathon. Throughout the year, we do a number of parades to represent our school and to show our
communities what our program is all about, dedication and hard work. We are always willing to do the parades
because we enjoy all of them, getting to meet new people and doing new drills.
Most recently during November 2015, we had a canned food drive; the proceeds we donated to shelters
that are in need. During November, we also had our Annual Fall Competition where all of the JROTC schools
in this district come together for a competition. Galileo JROTC took First Place for the Platoon Drill and Squad
Drill. We took Third Place for Guidon. And we got Second Place in overall. Cadets worked extremely hard
while balancing schoolwork and teams. The cadets have worked countless hours on a set ceremonial drill which
was a great success. To end 2015, before winter break started, JROTC program hosted a fun Christmas event to
celebrate all of our hard work since the beginning of the year and to thank one another for the things that they
have done for this battalion.
To start 2016, cadets volunteered at the Hot Chocolate Run. A very important new event will be a
JROTC 5K Run, which our program will be creating to celebrate the 100th birthday of JROTC itself. We will
also be having an Annual Brigade Ball, which allows cadets from all of the JROTC programs to come together
for a formal dinner and dance, and also to congratulate the cadets who have excelled in the program. As the year
is coming to an end, we will be having one last Annual Spring Competition, which consists of three other
JROTC teams from each of the JROTC schools that compete in which they use their creative mindset and skills
to make a new and unique drill for the competition. This competition occurs during the month of May, and all
of the JROTC programs in our district will compete. Our very last event for the school year is Camp Parks. This
is where all of the JROTC programs from our district come together at a JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge
(JCLC).

FALL SPORTS UPDATE
Football
Varsity Football (1-9)
Amid a season plagued by injuries and player suspensions, Galileo’s varsity team held onto playoff hopes all
the way to the last game of the season--with one more victory following a 20-8 win over #4 seed Burton, the
Lions would have crept in as the #4 instead of Burton. A key injury for Galileo happened at Mills High School
when junior MLB, Connor Chavela, strained his knee after punting the ball. Chavela would miss the rest of the
season. Other injuries to various starters throughout the season kept the Lion’s off-balance due to a re-shuffling
of players each week. With this young team (8 sophomore starters), immaturity was a key factor as several
players were suspended for 1-2 games during the 10-game season. Another key stat is that Galileo played 6
different players at quarterback this season. However, there were positives as juniors, Kenneth Grady (DE) and
Miles Mainini (TE) made the All-City first team. Losing 8 seniors only, this young team along with players
moving up from the FS championship squad will be looking forward to a successful season in 2016.
Frosh Soph Football (9-1)
They did it again! Galileo’s frosh/soph football team repeated as city champions. Led by a high scoring offense
and a stingy, turnover-hungry defense, the young Lions ran off 9 wins in a row before falling at Lincoln in the
final game of the season, 21-20. The offense was paced by talented sophomores; Adrian Poot (QB), Tyreke
Watts (RB), Jackie Guo (WR), and Aaron Tsai (WR). The defensive unit was a highlight reel for sophomore
linebacker, Dasan King who not only made tackles, but generated at least 1 turnover per game. Next to King are
2 capable freshmen, Antonio McBride and Ronald Fox (younger brother of Ronzel Fox, 2013 championship
RB). A football team is never great without potent linemen-a pair of frosh linemen (Maturo “Churro” Matute
and Max Miles) and sophomore first year player, Jet Li (yes, Jet Li) helped win the battles in the trenches.
WINTER SPORTS
BASKETBALL
Varsity Basketball (1-3 current league record)
With 1 senior starter and 1 sophomore, Galileo is off to a tough start at 1-3 in league play. The combination of
inexperience and lack of size attributed to a 1-8 preseason record. The lone senior is 3-year varsity player
Calvin Li who can knock down three pointers in bunches. The sophomore, 6’4” center, Ben Pate is the face of
the future. Filling in between the big and the small are key players; Matthew Ng (F), Francis Gonzales (SG),
defensive specialist-Donovan Hasson, and Kobe Lee (G).
Frosh Soph Basketball (1-1 current league record)
Freshmen, Luke Yoda (yep, Luke Yoda) is leading the way for a freshmen-heavy hoops squad looking to get
into the playoffs. Fellow freshmen guards, Nathan Tang and Jason Lei will solidify a trio of capable ballhandlers and shooters. The big obstacle for the young Lions will be the lack of size but they are hoping speed
wins out in the end.
WRESTLING
Galileo’s wrestling team remains undefeated with a record of 5-0 at mid-January. Our wrestling team so far has
defeated San Francisco International, O’Connell, Washington and Mission. The Mighty Lion Wrestlers must
defeat Lincoln, Balboa, Wallenberg, June Jordan and Lowell. An exciting moment in their meet against
Washington came when our Captain Lavelle Johnson took down Washington’s captain (a defending city
champion) by a pin in 1 minute and 17 seconds! There were 5 other pins in that meet by Galileo wrestlers! Go
Lions!

2016 HALL OF MERIT INDUCTION DINNER
The Galileo Hall of Merit Induction Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt
Fisherman’s Wharf, 555 North Point Street, San Francisco. Join us and support the Galileo Alumni Association, PTSA
and staff. Besides a raffle, there will also be a silent auction. Proceeds will go to the Galileo Education Fund. Save the

Super Bowl Charity event at Galileo football field Feb. 6 - FYI
The Air It Up Football Tournament hosted by NFL players Steven and Malcolm
Smith is a competition between Joes and Pros and benefits their 501(c)(3) Smith
Bros PLAY Foundation. We currently have Oakland Raiders Malcolm Smith,
NY Giants Steven Smith and Hakeem Nicks, and Washington Redskin
Dashon Goldson participating, among many others.

standing prior to being nominated.

Nominee may be an individual (student, staff or faculty member).

Nominee must have made a significant contribution, after graduation or attendance, to his/her
community, city, state, country, or globally. (Examples: science, technology, government, business,
education, the arts, philanthropy).
4.
Anyone, including Galileo alumni, faculty, staff, family or friends of a nominee may nominate a candidate. All
nominations will be reviewed and facts about qualified nominees will be verified by the Galileo Alumni
Association Hall of Merit Committee.
5.

CRITERIA

Nominee must have attended Galileo High School/Galileo Academy of Science and Technology in good
standing at least 5 years prior to being nominated.
2.
Nominee must have been an outstanding athlete. Examples: Member of a championship team, selected All
City, hold a high school record, recipient of a specific individual or team award, considered by peers as worthy
of being a member of the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame.
(Consideration will be given for recognized athletic activities and/or accomplishments after graduation.)
3.
Nominee may be an individual (faculty, coach, student) whose valued contributions to a specific sport or
athletics in general at Galileo are worthy of consideration for this award.
4.
Galileo alumni, faculty members, coaches, or family members of a nominee, may nominate a candidate. All
