When we where told about the India trip, none of us knew what to expect. Would we get ill, would it be hot? Some of us hadn’t even been away from our parents before and this is India we are talking about! When we got onto the plane, we knew this was going to be one of the best trips ever. For me this was the second time I would be going on this trip and I was very excited to go again this year. After a tiring flight we were still raring to go. Arriving in Delhi, we stopped at the hotel and then got on to the coach to go sightseeing. For some people in the group this was the first time they had visited Delhi. We saw the Parliament House, India gate and other historical attractions. After sight‐seeing we stopped at one of the most historic Gurdwaras in Delhi, Bangla Sahib. This was an amazing experience as we had learnt about the history of the Gurdwara in our Sikh studies lessons and now we were actually there. On the second day, we visited Baba Ji’s school Garib Niwaj. We toured the classrooms and talked to the children. The children staged a wonderful show for us. For me this was amazing, as I had visited the school last year I was able to see that a lot had changed already and the school had already made a lot of progress. Whilst at Garib Niwaj we also had the opportunity to do Kirtan. We were amazed to see that even though not all of the students were Sikh they were able to recite the Japji Sahib and sing Deh Shiva. After visiting the school and the slums, we have truly realised what Baba Ji is doing for the children. All of us were really touched at how happy the children and their families are regardless of the conditions they live in. (continued on Page 2) Guru Nanak Sikh Academy would like to wish

After visiting Delhi, we made our way to Jaipur. For some of us this was our first visit. We had heard about the incredible and diverse culture of Rajasthan and were excited to actually experience it. On the first day we went to go see Amer Fort. This fort is located up in the hills of Jaipur so we had to take a Jeep all the way up. Now this was a truly Indian experience. We learnt so many new things about the Rajput Maharajs and how these beautiful forts were constructed. The following day we visited the famous Pink City, City Palace and Jantar Mantar. We even got the opportunity to take a picture on an 1850’s camera. We then made our way to Punjab. Now we finally felt at home. After walking around in the galis of Ludhiana and Amritsar we knew this is where we belonged. We soaked in the colourful streets of Punjab whilst sitting in a tanga praying that we didn’t fall off. We were fortunate enough to spend Diwali in Amritsar. Whilst in Punjab we got the opportunity to go to Barundi. We were lucky enough to do kirtan there. We also went to Goindwal Sahib on Diwali. Overall, the whole trip is the best experience I have ever had. We experienced so many things and saw so many places. I will never forget the slums in Delhi and crossing some of the busiest roads you will ever come across. I am grateful for this opportunity and will remember it for the rest of my life. Gurpurab November 2011
In honour of the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s
birthday, the founder of the Sikh religion, the school celebrated on
Saturday 12th November. Students from both the primary and
secondary schools participated by performing shabads,
presentations and poems, the programme was a great success.
The event started with a warm welcome from the Head Boy and
Head Girl. Year twelve and Year seven were the first to perform by
singing “Kal Thaaran Guru Nanak Aaya” in front of the whole
sangath. They did a spectacular job. Year six confidently read a
poem in Punjabi without using any notes to help them. This was
followed by a shabad called “Man and Bhaya” performed by year
7.
The sixth form students Sharon Kaur and Sukhraj Singh Johal gave
an inspiring presentation about their trip to India, especially to the
Garib Niwaj School. It touched the hearts of everyone there.
Next Reception and Year 1 recited the mool mantar and shabad
“Dhan Baba Nanak.”
Dr Gurdeep then hosted a special awards ceremony for
outstanding achievement by students. with awards presented by
Baba Amar Singh Ji gave out awards to Taranjit Punn, Abirami
Anparasan and Pritpal Padan for outstanding achievement at A
Level. Manrita Singh and Jivanpal Singh were given awards for
their continuous Seva over the years. This was followed by
speeches by Baba Amar Singh Ji and Mr John McDonnell MP.
Year eight and nine performed Baajh Guru Dubaa Jag Saaraa,
which was followed by another shabad from Year 10 called Sajna
San Ao Merey
Two descriptive poem about Guru Nanak Dev Ji were presented by
Jamine Kakkar 10CM and Simran Longani 10DK. The presentation
went exceedingly well and many students and parents learnt
something about Guru Nanak Dev Ji that they did not know before.
Coming to the close of this Gurpurab year 12 performed a shabad
Karuh Kirpa Gopal Gobinde. The sangat was surprised when the
teachers joined year 12 and 13 to perfom the Anand Sahib.
The staff would like to say a well done to all the students and to
thank them for all the effort that went into rehearsals from
September onwards. The commitment shown created a big impact
on others and we are all grateful to those who helped. Thank you to
all the parents and visitors who came on the day and gave
donations which have been put towards a good cause. Again thank
you to all sixth formers and teachers who gave their time and
performed on the day.

Children in Need 2011
A big paw up to 7CS, who generously used their time selling cakes that they baked
themselves, and taking part in games like guess the weight of the cake, as well as
selling Pudsey wristbands and many more things! Some people even went to the
extent of doing a sponsored silence, walk or run! Our sponsored runners overran
their target on the astro turf, and by the end, their faces were as red as tomatoes!
As for our people taking part in the sponsored
silence, I think that for the teachers, it was a
miracle, perhaps the best time of their lives! Our sponsored swimmer
managed to reach her target of 30 laps in 1 hour and 2 minutes, She
put in a lot of time and effort in her training and raised loads for
Pudsey. A huge thank you to all of the generous people who
donated their money to such a worthy cause, since without them,
none of this would have been possible!!!!

Getting a Creative Kick Start
Cliff Yates, the poet in residence for Gloucester Schools and author of Jump Start came to the school to give some poetry
writing workshops. Students from Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 took part and there was even a workshop for teachers after school.
Some of the comments from staff and students showed the benefit of having real artists, writers, poets visiting the school.
Students enjoyed listening to the advice and ideas for writing poetry and found it quite different from normal English lessons.
There were sessions in free writing and ways to ‘warm’ up our minds and become more creative in our written responses to the
world we live in. One main theme is ‘elevating the ordinary’ and honouring our own everyday experiences and memories.

Music Students visit the Royal Albert Hall
All GCSE music students visited the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 11th October 2011 to see and
hear the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform songs from Broadway. With a dazzling West
End cast, including Ria Jones, Mary Carewe, Graham Bickley and Michael Dore and the
combination of the show-stopping music, the special light effects, not to mention the magnificent
surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall, it is little wonder that this wonderful show captured the
interest and imagination of all of the students.
“It was a great experience for the GCSE classes to see and
hear how an orchestra sounds live, a nice change from
reading a book! I enjoyed the range of music and being able
to identify different instruments that we have learnt in class”
says Taranjot Kohli (11KA).
This year’s show featured a special tribute to the great
musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber, including:
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The
Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Cats and Sunset Boulevard
“I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was great fun” says Hardev
Badwal (11KA). The audience not only listened to the great
music, but also had a chance to dance to it.

Exceptional Leave (ivsLysL CWutI)
In July 2011 the Academy wrote to all parents informing them of the Academy’s policy on exceptional
leave, below is a reminder of the main points:

Parents are not expected to apply for holidays for their children during school term time they are
expected to take holidays during school breaks.

In line with recommendations we will adopt a policy of not authorising Exceptional Leave
except in outstanding cases. The exception which will be given consideration is bereavement.
Our records show there is a rise in absences the week leading to half term school holidays and the week
immediately after. Having consulted with the Academy’s Education Welfare Officer, we have been
advised that we should pay particular attention to all absences during these two weeks. A letter outlining
the procedure for absence in these two weeks has been given to students. A copy is also available on the

French Play
On Tuesday 7th December, the whole of Year 8 had an entertaining afternoon watching the
performance “Vive La France”. The story is designed to develop a positive attitude to learning
French, to motivate learning and increase cultural awareness and to encourage spontaneous use
of French.
We were quickly drawn into a world where paintings can talk, people climb ladders without leaning
them against walls and the simple act of laying a table can turn into a balancing act of baguette
juggling. There was even the chance to learn the Mona Lisa Rap.
It was lively and interactive with music, comedy and circus skills: and Miss Sewoo, Ms Sariman
and Ms Williams all took part, along with Harveer Shergill (8NS) and Saloni Ghadiali (8SB)

Interfaith Event 2011
Sixth form students took part in an interfaith event in London. Students attended different
workshops along with students from other faith schools located in and around London. The
workshops focused on the main issues that British youth have to face these days and to discuss

Helping to fight the Cold Winters
Winter is here and while we look forward to having our hot
cup of cappuccino or tea and enjoy winter in the comfort of
our warm and comfortable homes, there are others for whom
the cold is just one more problem to add to their endless list of
woes.
To give warmth to the less fortunate who have to battle
the winter chill on the streets of Delhi, Baba Ji, Sant Baba
Amar Singh ji distributed blankets in the Bhogal Area of Delhi.
Joining him in this noble act were Papey Veer Ji (Gurvinder
Singh).
Cake sale to raise money for Christmas presents to
give to the Garib Nivaj Children
Students in 11GK worked together with the help of the
teaching staff to raised money for the Garib Niwaj
children in Delhi so that they can buy Christmas
presents. The staff baked cakes in school and at home
and year 10 decorated them during their food lessons.
The cake sale went extremely well and raised £300.
11GK also sold sweets and teddies and raised another
£350. Over 400 Christmas presents have been brought
with the money raised. A big thank you to year 7 10, 12,
13 and specially year 8 students in helping to wrap the
presents. They will be shipped off before the end of
this term. We hope the children at the Garib Niwaj
enjoy a great Christmas.

Gymnastic and Dance Display Evening
The PE department held it’s first Gym and Dance evening in November. Since
September, the students have been practicing dances, trampoline and gymnastics
routines at lunchtime and lesson times. We had a range of year groups from year
7-13 all taking part. The show consisted of a mix of Bhangra, Bollywood, Hip Hop
and a Michael Jackson Thriller dance. We had individual and synchronised
trampoline routines and finished the show with an exciting gymnastic routine from
the boys! The show was supported by parents and staff and we now look forward to
next years’ show! Well done to all those that took part!

Borough Gymnastic Competition
The Guru Nanak PE department hosts the Borough Gymnastics competition every
year. This year was our 4th Year. 5 schools from the Borough participated with our
own boys taking part in the competition. Several 6th form students have previously
taken a judging course and were the judges for the competition.
The standard of the routines were excellent with some outstanding displays of the
voluntary routines.
A big well done to all that took part and in particular to Gurinder Hargun in year 7
who came 3rd in the boys vault.

Year 7 & 8 Netball
The Netball teams for Year 7 & 8 have experienced a mixture of results this term.
Both teams had an outstanding victory in difficult conditions against Northwood
School. Fantastic shooting from Saffron in Year 8 and Parmjeet in Year 7 were to be
the difference between the two sides on the day. We also benefited from playing
against Northwood College who are a private school and have some excellent club
and county players.
A thank you to all the players from Year 7 & 8 who have contributed this season.
Also a big thank you to Miss Sariman. It is a testament to her commitment having
attended all fixtures and training sessions.

House Competition Winners
Since the last newsletter we have held Olympic
House Competitions in Futsal, Football, Hockey and
Sportshall Athletics. The attendance at each of the
competitions has been fantastic and the level of
competition has been excellent. In the Girls Futsal
7CS and 8AM were the winners. In the Mixed
Hockey 9DB and 10CR took the winning positions.
In a very close Sportshall Athletics competition 8SB
and 7CS were crowned this year’s champions. In the
Year 11 Football competition 11MM outplayed the
other teams and rightfully won the competition.
Please continue to support your form group and
house team by taking part in the Olympic
Competitions. You will be awarded 2 Golden Tickets
every time you attend. Results are displayed on the
PE noticeboard. Please see you Sports Captain for
details of the next competition.

FOTA - Gidda Pao Kurhio
On Friday 11th November, The Friends of the Academy were proud to present
‘Giddha Pao Kurhio’ at Monsoon Banqueting Suite to raise money for our
school. We raised £10,000 gross on the night.
Wow! What a night!! A big thank you to all those ladies and girls that
attended. A truly colourful night full of vibrant colours of prandhis, bangles
and traditional suits as everyone made an effort to dress up as a ‘Pindi de
Kurhi.’ It was a night of non-stop giddha and boliyan hosted by Sonu Walia
and our very own SMSA Manjeet Bains did a ‘Jago show’. It was an amazing
evening where parents, staff and students enjoyed the ‘ traditions of Punjab.’
FOTA would like to thank all the people who made the night a huge success.
Our next event will be on Friday 24th February 2012 - Giddha Night take
two - for the ladies only. We look forward to seeing you there. If you would
like to help or have any ideas for raising money for the school please let the
Academy office know.
