But there is one annual tradition that has crept into our culture over many decades that is just as predictable as the ducks and geese flying south for the winter. You may be thinking the World Series or the USC vs UCLA football game or the annual wine harvest. Nope, I’m talking about the arrival of the new model year automobiles in dealer showrooms. And this year marks a very special occasion for those of us in the CCSB and similar clubs around the country and even the world. That’s right…it’s the much anticipated arrival of the all new seventh generation 2014 Corvette Stingray. Chevrolet began shipping the 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe to dealers last week. According to General Motors, Chevy has produced about 1,000 Corvettes so far at its plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and expects most of them to arrive at dealerships in the next few weeks. However, the Detroit Free Press reports that some dealers will receive only one Corvette at first. Other dealers won’t receive their first ‘Vette for several months, as Chevy works to accelerate production. Hallelujah, they’re on their way!!! I can’t wait for the Coming Out party to celebrate the first Stingray bestowed upon a lucky CCSB member. Membership Column Pat Bloom Our current membership is 75 with 67 Corvettes. MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS: From Hib, Sandy, Bob & Inge: Corpus Christi, Texas: Vettes & Jets on the Lex for Vets ~ September 14 & 15, 2013. 2011 Photo provided by Lanmon Aerial Photography. All rights reserved. Four club members of Corvette Club of Santa Barbara, in two Vettes crossed Arizona and New Mexico into Texas for a quick 12 day tour of the southwest. The deserts are beautifully green with all the recent rains and unbelievable cloud formations making for great photos even at 85 miles an hour. The Lex is the USS Lexington a WWII aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi Bay, now a museum with jets on the flight deck. This was an opportunity to have our cars be two] of 350 Corvettes on the flight deck of the Lex for two days. We were #52 and #53. The flight deck can park 1,000 cars without jets. The reason for this event was to promote awareness and support the Wounded Warrior Project to help and aid injured Veterans and their families. Those braving the heat were Mike & Sandra Christeson, Thore Edgren & Patty Brown, Paul Zemella and of course Tony & Paula Megowan. Tony’s brother Richard also met us there. The three of us grew up in Sylmar and Richard had never been to the Nethercutt. When we arrived we saw that we were not the only Corvette club visiting that day. There was a club from Denver, CO that started in Chicago and traveled for the last 3 weeks on Route 66 to arrive in Southern California. There was also a Vespa scooter club visiting – but enough about them. The Nethercutt Collection is a living collection, meaning all of the items are usable. Every car is driven at least once a year and you can even sit on the antique furniture. It opened to the public in 1974 and has always been free admission. We entered the building on the 1st floor and oohed and awwed, (but didn’t touch!) some of the most beautifully restored cars we had ever seen. Included was a 1957 Corvette, several Packards, and even a 1914 Electric Car complete with charger. Once our tour guide Laurie rang the bell on the fire engine, we headed upstairs to the Grand Salon which is modeled after the showrooms of the 1930’s, where we oohed and awwed over the cream of the collection as we listened to George Gershwin play Rhapsody In Blue on the piano. Some of the cars included on this level were a 1932 Maybach Zeppelin Sport Cabriolet, a 1934 Packard Sport Sedan (named Orello), a 1923 Hispano Suiza Cabriolet De Ville, a replica of the 1886 Benz (the first patented automobile), and Tony’s favorite, the 1934 Duesenberg J Dual Cowl Phaeton (Tony has put one of these on his Christmas List) When George was done playing, we headed up to the mezzanine level and viewed a collection of hood ornaments, music boxes, old phonographs, some beautiful antiques and an enormous silver statue entitled Spirit of the West. Next we headed up the circular Stairway to the Stars staircase to the music room. We listened to Orchestrions, pianos (including the Imperial Concert Grand that has 97 keys) and of course the 1918 Wurlitzer organ which has over 5,000 pipes located in 11 separate rooms. Kyle entertained us as he demonstrated the capabilities of the Wurlitzer. The grand finale was listening to the Wurlitzer and the Imperial Concert Grand piano (both computer controlled) play a duet which was a medley of songs from Phantom of the Opera, Ghost Riders in the Sky and then for the car enthusiasts – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (the only car song in the playlist). Once our tour was over, we headed across the street where the Nethercutt Museum had another 150 cars on display including a collection of Rolls Royce Phantom’s (one of every model, 6 in all). There are 260 cars in the collection and 200 of those are on display at any time. Our last stop was Gabby’s Kitchen (a little hole in the wall in Sylmar) for lunch and then each headed home back to cooler temperatures. For those of you have never been to the Nethercutt you really need to make reservations and visit this amazing collection of “functional fine art.” Page 4 Volume 7, Issue 10 Corvette Club Santa Barbara NCM Master Ambassador Frank LoMonaco Congratulations to our wonderful Webmaster, Fred Smith and to CCSB. I entered our club newsletter in the National Corvette Museum Best of the Electronic Newsletters contest and, of all the clubs around the United States that entered, our club took second place! That is a huge honor for our club and a special thanks goes out to Fred Smith for all of the time and effort he puts in to making our monthly club newsletter a winner. This is our second win. A few years ago (2010) we placed first! Here is the award that the Museum sent to us. It will look wonderful on the wall at Fred and Sharon's home. Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com Kalyra Winery – The Great Grape Stomp Volume 7 Issue 10 Tony & Paula Megowan Saturday 9/21 we attended the Great Grape Stomp at Kalyra Winery in Santa Ynez. Did we actually jump into vats of grapes and stomp around? Yes we did – according to the winemaker Mike Brown, we were making “Toe Jam Merlot”. Did Tony actually wear a toga? Yes he did – he was the only CCSB member in a toga, but not the only one at the stomp. We saw several women dressed as Lucille Ball ready to stomp grapes, there were hayrides through the vineyards, glitter tattoos, and a library tasting with the wine maker. One of the wines included in the library tasting was a 1995 Cabernet Franc which wasn’t too bad considering its age. The winery was gracious enough to set up reserved tables for CCSB and we had a delicious Italian feast. We also danced to the music provided by the Just Dave Band and a good time was had by all. Those joining us at the Stomp were Pat Bloom, Thore Edgren & Patty Brown, Hib & Sandy Halverson, Peter Mackins & Karen, Frank & Barbara LoMonaco, Fred & Anne Lopez, Steve & Linda Petersen, Paula Ross & Carl Barth, Bob & Inge Stallings, Fred & Sharon Smith and of course Tony & Paul Megowan. This time you will have to drive down to Ventura and join us at our humble abode. Chef Tony will supply a wonderful Lasagna and we will rely on the rest of you to supply appetizers, salads and desserts. CLASSIFIEDS “1994 Corvette – 40,000 miles. They were taken up to the flight deck on the airplane elevator, a dozen at a time [“No burnouts or wheelies please!!”]. What a fun ride up and down. A hurricane was forming in the Atlantic; it went south to Mexico, fortunately for us. We still had fun, although our cars did get a soft water rinse. The South Texas Corvette Club helped sponsor the event and brought 37 Vettes. Most Vettes were from Texas, 17 other states joined too. We were the only two from California, OK brought 33 Vettes, MO with 10, AL & AZ with 9 Vettes each, others were AR, CO, FL, IL, KS, LA, MD, MI, MN, MS, NM, PA. So many Vettes! and many with cute personal ego plates. This was fun, a wonderful opportunity to meet many new Vette friends and we supported a good cause. What a sight to see 350 Corvettes on the flight deck of the USS Lexington and with jets too. We four: Hib & Sandy Halverson and Inge & Bob Stallings. Other points of interest included: An overnight in an old classic southwest Tucson hacienda. (Might make a great club run someday.) Texas Hill Country wine and beer tasting followed by a real Texas BBQ of brisket and ribs at the Salt Lick. YUM! The joys of the San Antonio River Walk, included balconies over the river, ‘Taste of the River’ dinner, floating barges, Alamo, Margaritas and Mariachi. All in friendly Texas style. (Save Texas water drink more wine) Corpus Christi found a wonderful ‘dive bar’ with good seafood and really good refreshing cherry shushes, aka Maraschino Margarita or Pink Pina Coladas. Tasted so refreshing with the humidity so high. (I will have another). Austin has a colony of 1.5 million bats that fly at sunset from under the Congress Street Bridge. Overwhelming sight. We stayed and ate at the Big Tex in Amarillo on route 66 for more Texas BBQ. They have a 72oz steak. Free if you eat it all and four sides in 60 minutes. No Thanks! The guy who was going for it when we were there didn’t make it. Last stop was in a 1890s B&B. That is a bordello & bar. Now a comfortable bed & breakfast. Commander Hib met with other Caravan planners in Texas and New Mexico and the Mayor of Williams AZ on way back. Next year this time it’s Bowling Green.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
