Look out for guaranteed quality.
Without worrying about the mileage.
You can rely totally on the Quality Factor with BPW. As you would expect, this also applies to our new generation ECO
Plus 2 axle, and because we keep our word we are happy to put it down in black and white. After all, our ECO Plus warranty is valid for 5 years, anywhere in Europe and without any milage limit. In addition, we offer you the opportunity to take
out a bolt-on warranty for another 3 years.* Isn’t that a reassuring commitment?
Whether with a rigid or steering axle, whether with drum or disc brakes – the ECO Plus warranty covers the entire
air-suspension axle system. Precondition: You register your vehicle, keep to the application conditions and service
intervals, and use only BPW genuine parts. Also, if you need to make a call on the warranty, our BPW service partners
will provide you with rapid assistance without any red tape.
The ECO Plus axle system: Costs significantly less than 1 eurocent per kilometre. We’ve calculated what an ECO
Plus tri-axle suspension costs over its entire lifecycle. It’s clear evidence for how economically you can drive with
the new ECO Plus.

The Quality Factor
BPW · THE QUALITY FACTOR / ECO Plus warranty
No chance for rust and stone impact.
Optimum corrosion protection for all BPW components.
Running gear from BPW offers robust technology for a long vehicle life. An important quality feature of our products is
cataphoretic dip-coating with zinc-phosphating (KTLZn). This is a special surface finish that provides 5 times more effective
corrosion protection than conventional painting processes. Thin layer corrosion protection processes such as Dacromet®
and Geomet®, as well as chromated surface protection systems, can withstand even the hardest stone impacts.
12
Cataphoretic dip-coating with zinc-phosphating (KTLZn) provides a deep shield and meets the most exacting requirements for corrosion protection. For example, KTLZn-coated BPW components can withstand a 504-hour salt-spray
mist test without any problems. BPW is also the first choice when it comes to thin-film corrosion protection processes: As well as using the familiar, tried-and-tested Dacromet® coating containing chrome VI, BPW is already adopting the EU end-of-life vehicle directive 2000/53/EC (which is at present only mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonne
gross weight rating) and is in some cases using chrome VI-free coating systems (e.g. Geomet®) instead of the previous systems containing chrome VI. These systems can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way, and are
not harmful to health. The result is convincing in all respects: Corrosion, cleaning chemicals and even stone impacts
don’t stand a chance. And the components are ready to be installed without requiring further painting.
How it works
Dacromet® and Geomet®: An inorganic, silvery coating is applied to the vehicle components
using an immersion process involving an aqueous suspension of zinc and aluminium flakes.
The coating is allowed to dry and then baked on at about 300 °C.
KTLZn: The vehicle components are given a painstaking 10-zone pre-treatment (including
zinc-phosphating), after which they are immersed in the cataphoretic dip-coating tank. A direct electric current is applied in order to coat the components with a water-soluble epoxy
resin varnish. This coating is then baked on at 185 °C. Result: The best possible corrosion
protection, even without a topcoat of paint.
The computer-controlled BPW cataphoretic dip-coating and zincphosphating plant represents the cutting edge in the application of
corrosion protection in car production and sets the global standard for coating quality in trailer chassis and suspension systems.
!

BPW axle beams have been square for years. And for good reason. Despite their low inherent weight, they offer
extreme stability and the greatest possible reliability. It is a BPW design principle that has proven itself millions of
times over. Together with our brakes and suspension systems, the square axle beam offers a sturdy basis for a long
vehicle service life.

Relief for tyres and the driver. For BPW,
it’s purely a question of adjustment.
The camber and toe-in of each BPW axle beam are set at the factory. These are minor values, but they have a
big effect on driving. That is because having the right camber and toe-in adds up to greater road safety and efficiency.

Positive camber – Unladen vehicle
Camber is defined as the angle (A) between the wheel centre plane and
a line drawn perpendicular to the plane of the carriageway. The camber
is positive if the top of the wheel is angled outwards when the axle is
unladen.
Positive camber – Laden vehicle
The bending load on the axle beam when the vehicle is laden causes the
wheel to straighten. This means the tyre rolls with optimum road contact
when the vehicle is laden (the most critical condition in terms of wear).
This avoids uneven, premature tyre wear.
Longitudinal axis of vehicle
Wheel centre plane
Direction of travel
!
Camber and toe-in – Features and benefits
Setting a positive camber ensures maximum
contact between the carriageway and the
tyres when the vehicle is laden, optimum
tyre tracking and avoidance of uneven, premature tyre wear
26
Toe-in
Toe is the angle (B) between the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and the
wheel centre plane. Toe-in means the front part of the wheel is turned
inwards towards the longitudinal axis of the vehicle – i.e. the distance
between the front of the tyres (A) is less than the distance at the rear (B).
During driving, the rolling resistance of the tyres causes the angle (B) to
be forced back to zero, thereby ensuring stable straight-ahead driving.
Without toe-in, the wheels would attempt to run outwards.
Having the toe-in set exactly ensures stable
straight-ahead driving
Lower operating costs and improved road
safety

Saving costs in an instant. With the maintenance friendly ECO principle.
The patented ECO principle from BPW not only offers excellent durability but its internal parts are also easy to
service. For example, the entire wheel can be pulled off after the axle bolt/nut has been unscrewed according to
the efficient Formula 1 principle. The stepped bearing assembly makes hub removal easy without the need for
an additional hub pulling device.

require.
BPW offers wheel hubs for wheels with and without offset, for drum or disc brakes, for single or twin tyres. Normally, wheels with 0 mm (ET 0) or 120 mm (ET 120) offset values are used on trailers and semitrailers. BPW axles
for wheels with zero offset can be equipped with either drum or disc brakes. Wheels with 120 offset can only be
fitted with disc brakes. Disc brakes with zero offset do not wear as much as those with 120 offset.

Decisive criteria for optimum running gear.
The right wheels, wheel attachments and

What is the load index of the wheels? What is the maximum speed allowed for the tyres? It is not only having the
right axle system that is a decisive factor in allowing a trailer to drive perfectly. Therefore, you should know all the
important details about wheels, wheel attachments and tyres.

The BPW rigid axle can take even ultra-heavy
duty transports in its stride. Whilst being a true
lightweight at the same time.
BPW rigid axles are the strong backbone for your trailer. They are rugged, have an extremely high load capacity
and are pleasingly light. After all, with ECO Plus 2, our designers have succeeded in reducing the inherent weight
of each axle by up to 25 kg. For you this means, we clear the way for greater efficiency.

Take control of costs, too.
With the LL self-steering axle from BPW.
The LL self-steering axle is the economic miracle of all the BPW axles. It shows off its strengths particularly
when tight manoeuvring is required in delivery and distribution haulage. Thanks to its greater manoeuvrability on
corners and when making turns, you benefit from more straightforward vehicle handling, less tyre wear and lower
fuel consumption – over a mileage of 1 million kilometres that adds up to the impressive amounts of up to 10,000
litres of fuel and more than 40 tyres per vehicle. Just work that out for your entire fleet!

Special transports are not to be taken lightly.
Unless you are driving with positive steering
axles from BPW.
Due to their length and the large number of axles, high-volume and high-load transporters in particular need a
much larger cornering radius than conventional semitrailer units. A steering system which acts individually on
all wheels – positive steering – is used to enable them to cope with normal roads all the same. Indeed, positive
steering systems are a legal requirement in certain vehicle configurations.

Tandem swinging axles can cope with all irregularities in the carriageway by pivoting in both the longitudinally and lateral axis of the vehicle.
Single swinging axles are predominantly used in heavy-duty vehicles
with several rows of axles. The lateral pivoting movement of the swinging bearings ideally complements hydraulic chassis and suspension
systems.

A hydraulic axle load compensating feature ensures that axle loads remain constant in linked circuits and, depending on the vehicle concept,
also offers the possibility of adjusting the level and inclination of the
loading platform. As a result, safe operation is assured even under difficult road conditions and when negotiating steep loading ramps. Long

Not everyone wants the standard solution.
So it is good to know that made-to-measure
special axles are available from BPW.
Wherever a normal axle system doesn’t meet the requirements – such as for box trailers as well as cable and
car transporters – it is necessary to provide the customer with an individual solution. No problem, because BPW
offers the right chassis and suspension products for almost every type of special vehicle. On request, we can
develop a tailor-made solution that takes account of your own special requirements.
Function: The structure of an axle stub
is basically the same as that in a rigid
axle. However, the axle beam does
not extend from side to side. It ends
shortly after the brake (according to
the customer’s request). The axle stub
suspension which attaches the axle
stub to the chassis is designed individually by the vehicle manufacturer.

Brakes / Configurations of the drum brake / Slack adjuster
ECO Master. The master amongst automatic
slack adjusters for drum brakes.
The required brake cylinder stroke increases as the brake lining thickness declines. The ECO Master slack adjuster makes up for this change and keeps the brake cylinder stroke in the optimum zone of action at all times.
Function: Brake linings and brake drums are wear parts. As
Brakes
In most countries, fitting automatic slack adjusters is a statutory requirement.

the thickness of the material is reduced, the brake cylinder
stroke increases, meaning that the brake camshaft has to
rotate further. In this case, the function of the ECO Master
slack adjuster provides an automatic adjustment. As a result, the brake cylinder stroke is always kept within the same,
optimum effective area. The adjustment stroke is designed
so there will always be a sufficient air gap even at higher levels of elasticity and given thermal expansion of the adjacent
components (e.g. the brake drum).
Delivery variants: Brake levers with different shapes and
crank values are available depending on the particular installation conditions.

Putting the brakes on service costs.
The BPW disc brake with tangential bolted
connection.
The BPW disc brake not only offers excellent braking properties, but also low service costs. You benefit from shorter
installation and service times thanks to the tangential bolted connection. If you also consider additional advantages
such as the low weight, improved durability and higher volume of abradable material, it becomes clear why the
BPW disc brake is currently setting the standard for brakes in towed vehicles.

Electronic safety systems for your brakes. It
comes down to the right brake compatibility.
Over the past few years, disc brakes and electronically controlled brake systems have become established in commercial vehicle technology. Here, systems such as ABS and EBS are leading to new possible combinations and
interfaces between the towing vehicle and the trailer. Having the right brake compatibility is decisive when it comes
to achieving the best braking results. The experts at BPW will be happy to advise you and recommend the optimum
solution for your applications.

Further BPW recommendations and notes
Strengths of disc brakes:
- Very good brake force modulation
- Low fading
- High braking comfort
(rapid response times)
- Low weight
Strengths of drum brakes:
- Mature, robust technology
- Low susceptibility to dirt because of
enclosed design
- Low heat transfer to the adjacent
components (e.g. bearings, tyres)
- Rapid brake service thanks to
BPW’s patented ECO principle
- Good integration into the vehicle (space)
Disc brakes for zero offset wheels have
a lighter system weight than 120 offset
wheels, and do not wear so much since the
temperature during braking is lower.
i
Wider track and spring centres are possible
with 120 offset – only one spare wheel is
needed for the towing vehicle and trailer,
depending on the version
Brake matching between the tractor unit and
the trailer is essential to ensure optimum
performance and a longer brake service life
In general, disc brakes offer excellent
braking performance. If trailers and semitrailers are towed by tractor vehicles which
- do not have a secondary braking system
(retarder, Intarder, engine brake, etc.)
and/or
- are equipped with a trailer parking brake
valve (anti-jackknife brake)
then the brake pad wear can be expected
to be disproportionately greater than on a
comparable drum brake!

The power plant for your brake system.
Brake cylinders from BPW.
In a brake system, it is of the utmost importance to achieve an optimum interplay between the individual components. The brake cylinders have a decisive role to play in this, because they have to provide a perfectly modulated
force transfer within the brake system. BPW develops and produces its own brake cylinders for drum and disc
brakes – further proof of our extensive expertise when it comes to brakes. As a system supplier, our product range
includes diaphragm and spring-type cylinders.

With BPW, your trailers enjoy the best
suspension. The same thing goes for the
running costs.
BPW suspension systems have proven themselves millions of times over, all over the world. With perfect driving comfort,
low-maintenance technology and a lightweight design. Thanks to ongoing development, BPW air suspension systems
combine high efficiency with outstanding driving properties and stability. Also, BPW leaf suspension systems set the
standard when it comes to applications under the harshest conditions – they are extremely tough and robust.

No roads are absolutely smooth.
To make up for this, we build absolutely perfect
running gear.
A running gear system is only ever as good as its suspension. BPW air suspension systems are individually designed to cope with where and for what they’re going to be used, and what load they’re going to carry. Only in this
way it is possible to ensure the optimum driving safety at the same time as reducing the stress on the driver, the
cargo and the body. This reduces wear on the tyres and cuts down the stress on the vehicle body and the cargo –
as well as reducing your expenses. Another advantage: The modular construction means that it’s easy to exchange
individual components in the event of a repair.

Suspension / Air suspension
Air suspension has come to the fore in the transport
Manually controllable raising and lowering of the super-
business. In comparison to leaf suspension, it offers:
structure
Greater precision in brake control via load-dependent bag
Long suspension travel
pressure
Increased road safety (e.g. by high rolling stiffness)
Static and dynamic axle load equalisation
Lower weight
Load-dependent damping (PDC) as an option
Optimum use of the permitted vehicle height
The possibility of using an axle lift
Suspensions
High level of driving comfort in all load conditions
The U-shaped connection comprising the axle and flexible trailing arms
noticeably reduces unwanted rolling movements and reduces the load on
the vehicle frame. This principle of connecting the axle and trailing arms
together acts as a stabiliser to cut down rolling movements. In this way,
air-sprung suspension systems from BPW achieve safe driving properties
as well as a high level of driving comfort.
The trailing arm connects the axle to the vehicle frame via the air suspension hanger brackets and the air bag. BPW trailing arms (single or twin
leaf springs) are highly flexible spring steel elements. They are hot-rolled
from one piece, after which they are shot-peened and cataphoretic dipcoating and zinc-phosphating.
Trailing arms absorb a great deal of torsional forces applied to the axle
beam. Various trailing arm versions permit individual equalisation – for
example for axle load, track, spring centre, centre of gravity height and
driving comfort. In every situation, their stiffness and flexibility are exactly
matched to the vehicle and its application. This reduces the stress on the
body and ensures that the vehicle achieves a long service life. The catch
plate offers the necessary safety reserves if the worst should come to the
worst. Long-life steel-rubber-steel bushes (up to 4 times the service life
of rubber-steel bushes) offer maintenance-free mounting of the trailing
arm. The axle is exactly controlled, while tyre wear and operating costs
are both reduced.

Lack of driving comfort increases the strain
on the driver, the vehicle and the cargo.
BPW finds the solution to this in the air.
Air suspension hanger brackets transfer all control, braking and acceleration forces from the axle to the vehicle frame. Short, adjustable BPW
air suspension hanger brackets with integrated shock absorber mounts
make installation easier, reduce weight and cut the torsional load on the
vehicle’s frame. The vehicle manufacturer benefits from straightforward
cross-bracing options at the interface between the frame and the hanger
bracket. Rapid unit alignment is possible using BPW hanger brackets with
integrated track setting. Production tolerances on the vehicle can be equalised or wheelbases corrected without the need to unfasten the U-bolts (axle
tracking).
BPW air suspension hanger brackets are available in steel as well as in
high-grade steel and aluminium on request.
What is more, with the bolted Airlight II air suspension hanger bracket,
BPW is offering manufacturers the opportunity of coating vehicle frames
without air suspension hanger brackets, and not connecting them to the
complete axle unit until the final assembly stage. Cold joining technology
allows the bolt-on hanger bracket to be mounted on standard frames,
including aluminium frames, with bottom boom width as little as 120 mm
– no changes are necessary on the frame.
The shock absorber reduces vibration in the vehicle body and ensures
greater driving comfort and road safety. That’s because the wheels stay in
contact with the road and dynamic wheel load fluctuations are reduced.
BPW uses various types of shock absorber to guarantee the best possible
damping in each case. High-volume BPW shock absorbers are adapted
to the vehicle, the overall height and the range of applications. The rubber bushes of BPW shock absorbers can be replaced. This is much less
expensive than buying a new shock absorber.
The axle is connected to the trailing arm using the axle connection comprising: spring plates, spring pads, segments and U-bolts. Clamped, positive-locking axle connections ensure an even force transfer into the axle
appropriate to the degree of load. This is only possible with square axle
beams which therefore offer a long service life. The connection parts are
attached at the reinforced radii of the axle beam (no welded connection).
BPW uses U-bellows because of their spring characteristics. They roll
over the rolling piston during compression.
66

possible to adjust the vehicle height using the „lifting“ and „lowering“
functions.

Airlight II air suspension.
The highlight for BPW running gear.
Airlight II air suspension sets the standards in running gear technology. With its modular structure, short installation
times and adjustable air suspension hanger brackets as standard, Airlight II shows just how ingenious and economical it is. Fully installed with a clamped axle connection, it is maintenance-free in on-road applications. The M 24
spring bolt is a new feature that replaces the M 30 spring bolt, thereby offering extra safety because it increases the
size of the contact surfaces at the same time. Furthermore, with the bolt-on Airlight II air suspension hanger bracket,
BPW is offering more flexibility in production because it can be connected subsequently to the vehicle frame with

Thanks to the latest bolted connection technology and a special contact geometry, there
is no need to retighten the connections or to
maintain the axle connection in on-road use.

The Airlight II 70 mm wide trailing arm means
reduced weight combined with the best possible wheel control as well as safe driving
characteristics.
The narrow, straight air suspension hanger
brackets enable straightforward installation
and can easily be welded onto the most easily
accessible crossbeams (also optionally available as bolt-on hanger bracket). Alignment in
the vehicle couldn’t be simpler thanks to the
standard adjustment function.

Airlight Direct from BPW.
Directly more comfort for the driver and payload.
Maximum driving comfort and optimum protection of the cargo: In the BPW Airlight Direct air suspension system,
the air bag absorbs all vertical shock loads. Advantage: Reduced acceleration of the vehicle floor. As a result, Airlight Direct raises driving comfort to a yet unparalleled level. The Airlight Direct suspension system cares for sensitive
cargoes particularly effectively.

Suspension / Airlight Direct / Axle lift device
Axle lifts from BPW.
The device for a long tyre life.
As an option, multi-axle vehicles can be equipped with an axle lift to reduce the wear on the tyres when driving
unladen or with a light cargo. BPW offers axle lifts for positioning in the middle or at the sides. All BPW axle lifts are
compatible with the Auto-Drop system. It automatically lifts up to two axles on a tri-axle suspension (when unladen)
Suspensions
and lowers them again (when laden).
Locating the axle lift at the side is recommended for lifting the
first axle and in vehicles with limited ground clearance, high
axle loads or long suspension travel. The double-sided lift
(for air-sprung axles up to 12 tonnes) does not need any space
in front of the air suspension hanger brackets or in the middle
of the vehicle. It can be fitted at any time to any axle position offering the convincing benefits of low weight and good
ground clearance. Both the central axle lift device using a
lifting bag and the BPW central lift with bellows fitted in the
middle of the vehicle can lift one or more suspension axles and
are integrated within the space of the axle unit. Their compact
design means they are preferred for use in vehicles with limited
ground clearance and small tyres (e.g. pallet box trailers with
single tyres).
!

BPW also offers an easy to install double-sided axle lift for the bolt-on
air suspension hanger bracket.

BPW PDC shock absorber.
Intelligent damping that automatically detects the
loading condition.
The best damping, better road safety, lower maintenance costs: The BPW PDC shock absorber (PDC = Pneumatic
Damping Control) improves driving properties and driving comfort because it adjusts continuously to the particular
loading condition. An intelligent solution that can be OEM-fitted or retrofitted to BPW air suspension systems.
Function: The disadvantage with conventional shock absorbers is that their characteristics can only be optimally
adapted to one loading condition (usually fully laden). The
PDC shock absorber detects the actual loading condition via the air suspension and adapts itself smoothly.
ticular when the trailer is empty or only partly laden.
The PDC shock absorber is almost essential in high-value
! vehicles and when carrying sensitive cargoes. Vehicle maintenance costs are reduced. The cargo and the carriageway
are also subjected to fewer shock loads. The PDC shock absorber is connected to the BPW air suspension system and
does not require any electronic control systems.

Suspension / PDC / 3-D trailing arms and channel crossmembers
3-D trailing arms: The ingenious „three-dimensional trailing arm“ (3-D)
enables vehicle manufacturers to assamble air-sprung tri-axle suspension systems with an LL self-steering axle onto the same frame as a rigid
unit without any problems – there’s no need to have a special offset frame.
It goes without saying that the 3-D trailing arm offers the same functions

The channel crossmember: Vehicle manufacturers all over the world
quickly appreciate the assembly benefits of this component. Whether
it’s the hanger brackets, the shock absorber attachments or the crossbraces, everything is integrated to save space. Even steering axles can be
connected to it without additional preparation. The channel crossmember
is available in two versions – with an open, narrow hanger bracket for
welding or with a cover plate for bolting/riveting onto the vehicle frame.
The channel crossmember can even make additional crossmember unnecessary, depending on the frame design.

Special air suspension components from
BPW. Greater efficiency for vehicle
manufacturers.
No creases when you are on the move.
With the Combi airbag from BPW.
In road/rail/ship combined transport, trailers with vented air suspension systems are lifted by gantry cranes or manoeuvred by marshalling tractors. Conventional air suspension systems are at risk of damage to their air bags. The
patented Combi airbag from BPW (European patent 0 554 573 B1) provides an effective safeguard against folding
and creasing of the air bag and thereby guarantees a long service life.
Function: The air bag of a Combi airbag is divided into two
parts: The air bag
is bolted onto the vehicle frame with the
rolling piston while the centring cone
is connected to the
trailing arm. When the trailer is lifted, the axle and the cone
move downwards. The movement is restricted by the shock
absorbers. However, the airbag remains in its rest position.
When the trailer is lowered to the ground, the airbag and centring cone once more come together. The bag can neither
fold nor crease. A long service life is thus assured.

Engineering services from BPW.
BPW helps you to get your vehicle on the road in the best possible condition. With numerous engineering services
that put your individual trailer requirement profile into the focus of attention. Whether FEM or brake measurements,
whether driving tests or test facility trials and tilting stability calculations – our specialists advise you in detail and
develop the solution that best meets your needs.
Application consulting
BPW assists you in standardising vehicle frames and helps
you to select axles and axle units which are appropriate for a
particular market or application. With BPW, your ideas are in
the best hands. That’s because BPW offers you a wide range
of ingenious solutions for technical applications. Whether
you have detailed questions or want to develop complete vehicles: We are happy to offer you advice. If necessary, BPW
can also test vehicles in operation so as to come up with
the correct solution for you based on the measured data. In
this case, BPW refers to existing standards and uses its own
experience, or else develops a special catalogue for you containing the necessary measures.
FEM calculations
BPW possesses many years of experience in performing
stress measurements during driving trials. We perform computer analysis (also on the vehicle frame or frame components) and propose any necessary optimisation measures.
In this way, you cut calculation time as well as shortening
testing and development cycles.
Driving tests
In driving tests, BPW analyses the load on frame components: deformation or stress on connecting pieces, gusset plates and crossmembers is recorded using strain
gauges and evaluated with the vehicle manufacturer.
This means frame and chassis components can be optimally
designed prior to the start of volume production.
98
Service and Distribution / Engineering
Test facility trials
In BPW test facility trials, components are subjected to pulsating or alternating forces. Various test programmes can be
used for this, such as driving along a test route. As a result,
operational strength and component flexibility can be tested
under realistic conditions. This reduces the development
time of components and modules.
Modular test rig
Using the 12-channel modular test rig, BPW can simulate all
vertical, transverse and longitudinal forces as well as braking, steering and pitching torques that can act on the running
gear during operation. As a result, off-road tracks can be
simulated in real time and test track drives can be reduced.
Also, the inspections are rendered more reproducible.
Brake calculations
BPW prepares EC/ECE brake calculations on the basis of
BPW brake cylinders as well as components and designs
from other manufacturers. In this way, design tolerances can
be exploited sensibly in terms of technology and efficiency.
The best possible brake suite and the most effective braking
Turning circle and tilting stability calculations
BPW offers you the service of EC-licensed turning circle calculations. This calculation is accepted for the vehicle registration and therefore replaces the practical demonstration in
almost all cases. Also, the planned vehicle will comply with
statutory provisions right from the start. Since July 2003, the
rollover resistance of hazchem vehicles will have to be demonstrated as part of the registration process. An acceleration
at right angles of 0.4 g is demanded. This has to be confirmed mathematically or using the tilting test. BPW offers
you a mathematical check of compliance with this requirement. It is performed in accordance with ECE regulation no.
111, appendix 4. As a result, the costly tilting test can be
avoided.

all based on the BPW logistics centre that supply you with components not only at the right time but also ready to

With BPW, everything is in the right place.
This means things that belong together fit
together.
In drum braked axles from BPW, the air cylinder brackets are welded onto the axle beam. They are used for accommodating diaphragm and spring-type cylinders. The offset hole pattern of the BPW air cylinder bracket permits
optimum positioning of the brake cylinder for any lever length. In addition, the air cylinder brackets have marks for
additional hole patterns when using small brake cylinders with narrower stud spacings. Dirt, water and snow can
escape through a gap between the air cylinder bracket and axle beam.

BPW makes it easy for you.
Air suspension installation exactly according to
plan.
BPW supplies the air installation kit and the corresponding installation diagram for the particular application. The
installation diagrams show the valves in what is referred to as the ISO view. The letters and numbers of the valves
printed inside boxes on the installation diagrams are identical to the markings on the valves themselves. That makes
installation very straightforward. BPW‘s warranty will be invalidated if installation is performed incorrectly by third
parties.
Example for air suspension installation: Tri-axle suspension, without
lifting and lowering, with axle lift device and LL self-steering axle.

Technical Data / Air suspension / Air suspension installation
The air suspension valve is the heart of the air suspension
axle in tri-axle suspension systems or of the rear axle in tan-
installation. It controls the air bag pressure according to the
dem axle suspension systems. In special cases (e.g. axle lift
vehicle load and therefore keeps the ride height constant.
device), the air suspension valve can also be connected to
It is attached in the vehicle frame and connected to the axle

by means of the linkage device – in the centre of the middle
Air suspension valve
Stroke limiting
catch straps
Frame attachment
Direction of travel
The valve lever is horizontal in the driving position. It is moved downwards for a functional check. The air now flows out into the atmosphere
via the vent flap. However, the valve shaft must be turned through 180° if
air gets into the bellows. The valve lever must be installed the other way
round for this. The ride height must be set on level ground by moving the
articulated rod in the rubber joints and adjusting on the lock nuts.
Axle centre
Direction of travel
Rapid venting
In vehicles whose payloads are unloaded rapidly, e.g. tippers, container
vehicles, steel strip vehicles, etc., stroke limiting is required in the form of
catch straps or rapid venting of the air bags.
1. Stroke limiting is performed using an air suspension valve with integrated shut-off or by a separate shut-off valve. The shut-off valve is
bolted onto the vehicle frame and is connected to the axle by means of
a return spring hooked onto the draw pin. Once the maximum stroke
height has been reached, the air supply to the air bags is blocked thereby limiting the stroke.
2. Stroke limiting can also be performed using catch straps. When installing, make sure the catch strap does not chafe on the axle beam.
Crane, rail or ship transport
In vehicles for crane, rail or ship transport, BPW recommends air bags
with a split piston – the Combi Airbag II system. No stroke limiting is required when the combination air bag is used, providing stroke limiting is
not expressly stipulated in the technical documents.
Depending on the version, the limiting function is in the shock absorbers in axles with a lifting and lowering device without stroke limiting by
shut-off valves or catch straps. The shock absorbers are equipped with a
traction stop, however they are not designed for stop forces from approx.
8.5 bar air bag force.

To light axles and reduce costs.
With BPW axle light devices.
Axle light devices spare tyres in unloaded or low loaded condition and additionally save fuel and therefore cash,
thanks to the low rolling resistance along the road. At tandem axle suspensions one axle an be lifted , at tri-axle
suspension maximal two axles can be lifted.
With steering axle
A „rigid axle/steering axle“ ratio of 1:1 is permitted in vehicles
with series LL self-steering axles. As a result, one rigid axle
can also be lifted in tri-axle suspension systems. It is advantageous to lift the first suspension axles since this gives
greater ground clearance (body lean) and a longer wheelbase – thereby achieving a more stable driving behaviour.
The statutory regulations of the German „BO-Kraftkreis“ –
defining a turning corridor within which the vehicle must stay
when driving in a circle – this must be adhered to!
Control
Lifting axles are controlled either electro-pneumatically (electric switch), with manual pneumatic control (hand-operated
valve) or automatically (compact valve). The overload protection demanded in the legislation is taken into account in the
BPW installation kit.

upward travel of approx. 100 mm. A working cylinder can
be installed on the air suspension valve if it is not possible
to set the ride height for the minimum upward travel. When
the lifting device is operated, air is admitted into the working
cylinder and the ride height is automatically increased by approx. 40 mm. Note the overall height of the vehicle!

Lateral arrangement
Rubber bump stop
The double-sided axle lift is equally suited to air-sprung axles
The lateral arrangement is suitable for lifting the first suspen-

sion axle when the axle weights are relatively high or in the
both air suspension hanger brackets on each module and
case of long-travel suspension units. The lift arm is mounted
