Ferret
Ferrets are part of the weasel family, and are known for their long, lean
bodies and intelligence. It is probably because of their intelligence that
ferrets can be prone to mischief. They are skilled at getting into places
where they shouldn’t be! Ferrets are predators to other small animals and
therefore should be housed as far away as possible from other rodents in
the room. They have a lifespan of approx. 6­8 years, but can live up to 12.
FERNI
Forage (food)
● Ferrets need a lot of protein and it is necessary to provide them with a ‘ferret’ diet specifically, which
should be available at Global Pets. If unable to obtain ferret food, kitten food can be used, but if the ferret
is older than 4yrs, adult cat food is recommended. Get the ‘ferret’ diet food though!
● Treats should be avoided.
Exercise
● Cage (as large as possible) with multiple levels is a must!
○ Plastic corner litter pans can be used for additional perches, etc.
○ Wheels are not necessary.
○ Hammocks
○ Tie rope across the cage
Rest (Hide)
● Plastic igloos,huts, boxes; hammocks, hammocks, hammocks!
● Large tubes (PVC piping works great)
● Plush small animal bed
Nest
● Fleece blankets, hammocks, etc., are acceptable nesting material for ferrets. They sleep A LOT, so
comfy bedding is really important.
Interests (Play)
● Ferrets have poorly developed sweat glands and are susceptible to heatstroke, therefore a temperature
below 25C is necessary.
● Since ferrets enjoy washing their faces in water, they should be given a water bowl (make sure it is a
fairly heavy one so they don’t tip it over) rather than a bottle.
● Toys
○ Toilet paper rolls
○ Willow branch balls
○ Crumpled up newspaper
○ Stuffed toy (without buttons)
○ Wooden toy blocks
