Welcome New Residents & Promote Your Business Help us welcome our new residents to our friendly community! Melissa Barth, IOM Chamber Executive Director In a 1950′s sitcom, it wasn’t unusual to see friendly neighbors knocking on doors and introducing themselves to the new residents next door or down the block. This isn’t as common of a practice in the 21st century, but welcome packets and welcome gifts are still very much alive — not only for new homeowners but also for apartment tenants. Greeting new residents is a great way to put a friendly face on our community and people won’t forget who made them feel welcome. It is also a huge benefit for your business to be involved - people like to buy from people they know and new residents may not know anyone. Being a welcoming, accommodating new friend to these members of your community makes everyone feel good. Welcome gifts are a gesture of friendliness and they provide additional opportunities to solidify that relationship. Entice new residents with an offer they can’t refuse. Include a coupon for a buy-one-get-one meal, for a discounted haircut, or for a free consultation — just make it as valuable as you can. If it’s irresistible enough, new residents might even attach it to their fridge with your magnet (hint). Does your business specialize in higher-ticket products or services? Take care to provide enough of a discount to make them take notice. Remember, you have an opportunity to secure future business once you get those new clients through the door6but you have to get them through that door first. How will we reach these new residents? With your help! And also, the City of Spearfish has included this new benefit in the brochure they give new residents when they sign up for utilities. The chamber also mails relocation packets to inquiring prospective residents, which will include a postcard for them to cash in upon moving to our community. Our office will be including the Connections Magazine Business Directory, a welcome note from Mayor Boke and myself, a detailed street map, along with information on how to find out about all of our great local events. If you’re looking for ideas for the packet content, you could include: promotional items from your business coupons for a product or service an invitation to an event - or better yet a ticket • • • Deliver your items to the Chamber Office at anytime! Corner of Main & Kansas Questions? Give me a call at 605-642-2626 or email me at director@spearfishchamber.org It’s not necessary to spend thousands of dollars on high-ticket products. Start small and customize an inexpensive-but-useful product like a chip clip, a koozie, a jar opener, or an ice cream scoop. Trust me, these types of gifts stick around forever. This is one of the most effective ways to get recipients to remember you. Homebuyers and apartment renters can always use common household items, especially when they’ve just moved in and haven’t had a chance to fully unpack! Whether you run a hair salon, a grocery store, a financial institution, an auto body shop, or a lemonade stand, this is a great opportunity! RETRACTIONS in CONNECTIONS Please note in the Worship article on page 16, last paragraph first column, that the Connection Church is Southern Baptist, not Seventh-Day Adventist. Also, please note the alignment issue on page 45 where Waddell & Reed were accidentally bumped above the beginning of the ‘W’ section.
