Welcome!
the history of
In 1984, when Richard Brindley purchased 240 acres of land
stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Currituck Sound, he
had a vision. He would develop a community in which the
amenities were plentiful, the homes were welcoming, and most
importantly – the development would complement its natural
surroundings. Today that community is Corolla Light, the
premier resort of the Outer Banks.
When Mr. Brindley envisioned the development of his property,
he saw all owners and guests sharing enjoyment of the beautiful
surroundings. To that end, he built two oceanfront swimming
pools and three piers for sunset-watching. He built bulkheads
on the sound front property, and created a five-mile nature
trail. When he added landscaping throughout the resort, other
developers thought he was crazy. They told him people come
to the beach to see sand, not grass. “You may be right,” Mr.
Brindley responded, “but I believe the owners will have the best
of both. They will have the ocean and the beach and will also
have the advantage of flowers, shrubs, and manicured grass
areas.”
Of course, Mr. Brindley knew that preserving the natural beauty
of the land wasn’t going to be enough to turn Corolla Light into
the premier resort that it is today. He also envisioned amenities
that would surpass any resort area in the Carolinas and would
be exclusively for the resort’s owners and guests. Today those
amenities include swimming pools on both the oceanfront
and the sound; outdoor playgrounds, basketball, tennis, and
shuffleboard courts; and an indoor sports center with clay tennis
courts, racquetball courts, an Olympic-sized heated swimming
pool, fitness equipment, and more. During the summer, several
trolleys serve the development providing transportation from
one area to another. The Corolla Light staff offers a full day of
activities for visitors of all ages.
Mr. Brindley’s unique vision made Corolla Light what it is today
– a world-class resort that has it all. From the very young to the
young at heart, from sun-seekers to nature lovers, Corolla Light
truly has something for everyone.
Corolla Light Vacation Guide - 1
– From the General Manager
Welcome! On behalf of the entire staff at Corolla Light, I’d
like to welcome you to our award-winning community.
We’re glad you chose us as your vacation destination. Our
well-trained staff will do everything they can to ensure that
you and your family have the most relaxing and enjoyable
vacation possible. Please don’t hesitate to contact a staff
member if you need any assistance during your stay.
While you’re here, please take a moment to fill out the
guest survey you’ll find in your check-in packet. We ask
all guests to complete a survey so that we can use your
feedback to better serve you. We truly appreciate hearing
what you think we’re doing right and what you think we can
do to improve. Guest surveys can be returned to any staff
member, or to the desk attendants at either the oceanfront
complex or the Sports Center.
Thank you again for choosing Corolla Light. We hope you
continue to visit us for years to come!
Sincerely,
Don Cheek
CLCA General Manager
Wristbands...
We ask that you wear your Corolla Light wristbands at all times
during your stay. The wristband is your free ticket for the use of the
amenities on the resort, such as the swimming pools, basketball
and volleyball courts, and the Richard A. Brindley Sports Center.
Your wristband also allows you to ride the trolley throughout the
resort. When participating in activities on the resort you must have
a Corolla Light wristband. By wearing your wristband, we can be
assured that the amenities are being used by owners and guests.
So please help us keep Corolla Light an award winning resort
by wearing your wristband.

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse
On December 1, 1875 The Currituck Beach
Lighthouse filled the remaining “dark space” on the
North Carolina coast between the Cape Henry and
Bodie Island lighthouses. The red brick of the 162’
tall tower was left unpainted to distinguish it from the
other coastal beacons.
Not long after construction of the tower was
completed, a Victorian-style duplex dwelling was
built on site and three lighthouse keepers and their
families moved in. The keepers were responsible for
“keeping” the oil lamp inside the first-order Fresnel
lens burning every night, making sure the red flash
panels rotated around the illuminated lens so mariners
could identify the tower, and watching for shipwrecks.
Before switching to kerosene in the 1880s, keepers
burned lard oil. In the early 1920s, the principal
keeper’s house from the Long Point Light Station in
Currituck Sound was also moved to the site.
The lighthouse was automated in the late 1930s,
keepers were no longer needed and the houses were
vacated. For decades the structures were untended
and fell into disrepair. In 1980, JohnWilson, greatgrandson of the last principal keeper to live in the
house (Homer Treadwell Austin) formed the Outer
Banks Conservationists (OBC) to save and renovate
the larger house. A decade later the organization later
received permission from the Coast Guard to renovate
the tower and open it to the public. OBC now owns the
lighthouse,thankstotheU.S.LighthousePreservation
Act of 2000 and much public support. The lighthouse
remains an active aid to navigation and is one of only
a few working lighthouses in the United States that
still uses its original, first-order, Fresnel lens.
The light station includes a brick tower and vestibule,
restored keepers’ quarters, cisterns, a museum shop,
and brick walkways.
The lighthouse tower and grounds are open to the
public spring through late fall, weather permitting, 9
a.m.until5p.m.(anduntil8p.m.onWednesdays/
Thursdays in the summer). Admission to the grounds
is free; a fee is charged to climb the lighthouse (214
steps to the top). Children 7 years old and younger are
admitted free of charge with a climbing adult ($7 per
person/cashandchecks).Call252-453-4939orvisit

Corolla Schoolhouse
The Corolla Schoolhouse, which opened in the late
1890s to support the families of lighthouse keepers
andlifesavingstationsurfmen,closedin1957when
the village population became too small to support it.
For the decades following, children in Corolla spent
hours getting to school by boat or bus. In August 2012
the Corolla Schoolhouse opened as a school once
again.NowtheWater’sEdgeVillageSchool(WEVS–
pronounced“waves”)itacceptsupto30K-6children
for its mixed-grade, project-based, free charter school.
Corolla Light is a Charter Donor to the school and
welcomes the school children for visits to our facilities.
If you have the heart of an educator or love being
connected to the Corolla community, please consider

them), volunteering, or contributing to the school.

Focus on the Beach:
Clean,PristineandSafe
Boasting the only junior lifeguard program on the northern Outer Banks, the only weekly kids’ ocean safety
program, and the only ocean rescue-hosted 5k fund-raiser, and maintaining the local lifeguard Olympics
championship title for over a decade, Corolla Ocean Rescue continues to make waves while ensuring the
safest beach environment possible through public interaction, observation, and education.
Leave Only Footprints- For the upcoming summer seasons, the emphasis will be on safety as well as preserving
the pristine and attractive attributes of the beach. Currituck County has teamed up with Corolla Ocean Rescue
to support local community organizations in encouraging patrons to pack out everything. While patrons
are already invited to use trash receptacles at the walkovers, the County has mandated that all personal
belongings be removed nightly.
ToughSoulsRunBarefoot-CorollaOceanRescue’s5kfundraiserallowstheorganizationtokeeptheSEAL’s

weaves through Buck Island and Whalehead Subdivisions with a mile of the course on the beach. The race is
