Senior Moments Volume II, Issue 8 City of Auburn, AL August 2009 Young at Heart Club It’s back to school time! Summer is winding down, which means fall is just around the corner! We have a busy schedule coming up in the next few weeks. This month wraps up our Summer Flicks Movie Series. If you haven’t had a chance to join us, bring a friend and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before we take in a FREE movie at Carmike Wynnsong 16 don’t forget to register! Be sure to keep reading for more details on our upcoming trips and programs. Be sure to check out page three of this month’s newsletter for information on the Masters Games District 9 golf and bowling tournaments. As always, join us on the first and third Tuesday of the month for Young at Heart Club Bingo and Lunch. Bring a friend and a covered dish, and we’ll see you on August 4 and 18! Summer Flicks Movie Series Thursday, August 13, 11:45 a.m. - 3 p.m. Carmike Wynnsong 16 Join us for the final Summer Flicks Movie Series on Thursday, August 13. We will meet at a local restaurant for lunch then drive over to the theatre for a FREE movie. Transportation and the cost of lunch are not provided; however, the movie is FREE. To register, please contact the Dean Road Recreation Center at 501-2930. Registration deadline: Friday, August 7 at 5 p.m. The One & Only Scot Bruce Elvis Tribute Monday, August 17, 4:30 - 10 p.m. Alabama Shakespeare Festival See this KING SIZED, one night only performance on the ASF’s Festival Stage, Monday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Montgomery Advertiser said, “Scot Bruce doesn’t just look and sound like the King…he attracts King-sized audiences.” The registration deadline has passed. Jazz Journeys at the Georgia Aquarium Friday, August 28 12:30 - 10:30 p.m. Jazz Journeys is sure to lighten your mood with the sounds of upbeat, cool tempos and smooth melodic jazz tunes as you take in the sights of some of nature’s most alluring aquatic animals. Featured performer Joe Gransden’s voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. Registration deadline: Friday, July 31 at 5 p.m. The cost of the trip is $30, including transportation and admission to the Aquarium and the performance. Coffee Break: Afternoon Tour and Social at The Columbus Museum Thursday, September 24 10:45 a.m. - 3 p.m. Senior citizens with an interest in art and history are encouraged to attend The Columbus Museum’s monthly Coffee Break program. The event includes a tour by a museum docent of a special exhibition, followed by coffee and dessert in the Museum’s Wright Room. The featured topic for September is “America as Seen on Paper.” Registration deadline: Friday, August 28 at 5 p.m. The cost of the trip is $5, lunch is not included. Cotton Pickin’ Fair Sunday, October 4, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Gay, GA Return to 1910 where the Farmhouse, the Cotton Gin, and the Cotton Warehouse form a unique backdrop for a great day of 21st Century fun. Registration deadline: Friday, September 4 at 5 p.m. The cost of the trip is $10 and includes admission to the fair and transportation. Page 2 Senior Moments Preserve Your Vacation Memories Summer is almost over, but don’t let your memories fade away! Preserve your photos, ticket stubs, napkins and so much more with one (or more) of these great project ideas: Vacation Memory Shadow Boxes – Exhibit your vacation memorabilia as art by assembling it into a striking three-dimensional display. Memorabilia Tins – Show off a map or flier from your trip by pasting it onto a decorative tin. No-Glue Scrapbook – Maps, ticket stubs, and receipts add an authentic touch to a vacation scrapbook, but incorporating them can be messy. Instead, simplify the process with this glue-free scrapbook. Customized Journal – Spark inspiration even after the journey’s over when you adorn a journal cover with maps or other printed ephemera. Travelogue – A travel scrapbook can incorporate anything picked up on the road – even café napkins or business cards! Map Memory Board – Put your vacation adventures on prominent display by creating a map memory board that traces where you’ve been. Travel Collages – One-of-a-kind wall art can be created inexpensively when you assemble a collage from travel paraphernalia. Picture-Frame Photo Box – Store snapshots from a vacation or special occasion in a box that displays its theme. As-You-Go Vacation Keepsake – Preserve your vacation memorabilia on the road with a handy organizer. Collected Memories Book – Compiling “remember when” moments in an album and presenting them to a friend will strengthen those bonds even more. Memory Quilt – Some items are too precious to give or throw away. Instead, turn them into a memory quilt. Bottle-Cap Magnets and Thumbtacks – A homey take on the traditional locket, bottle caps inset with small photos, can be used as thumbtacks or magnets. She is the proud mother of three children, all of whom live locally, and six grandchildren. Mae Bell spent 37 years working at West Point Stevens before she decided to retire. Now she fills her days with hobbies such as working in the yard, cleaning, babysitting her grandchildren, and cheering them on at their sports games throughout the year. Mae Bell loves to cook and is known for her famous turnip greens and chicken dressing. An active member of Nazareth Baptist Church, she serves as both the treasurer and an usher. Known for her love of travel, Mae Bell’s favorite trip was to none other than the “City of Lights,” Las Vegas! Her favorite food is grilled chicken and her favorite activity when she was in school was singing in the choir. At a Name: Mae Bell Scott recent school reunion, Mae Bell gave a speech in which she stated she Favorite Food: Grilled chicken wasn’t “much of a talker,” but the crowd erupted in laughter and told her Favorite Travel Spot: Las Vegas that wasn’t the case. Mae Bell is a lone wolf in her family – she is a AU or AL: War Eagle! strong supporter of Auburn athletics surrounded by a family that loves to chant “Roll Tide!” She has thoroughly enjoyed traveling with our Young at Heart group and thinks all retirees should get out of the house, get involved, and enjoy “the time they have left!” Masters Games District 9 Tournaments Masters Games is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults 55 years and older through social, mental, and physical activities. District games include a variety of sports and activities for singles and doubles. Winners at the District level qualify for the State Games in Florence, AL, October 5 - 8. Masters Games District 9 Golf Tournament The District 9 Golf Tournament will be held August 10 - 11 at Valley Grand Golf Course in Valley Grand. The tournament is open to men and women. The entry fee is $35 for singles (pitch & putt) and $35 for the scramble. All entry fees include a cart, lunch, and a free practice round. Registration deadline: Wednesday, August 5. Veterans Benefits Reference Guide Now Available The latest edition of the US Department of Veterans Affairs Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents, and Survivors is now available. The 164-page handbook provides the latest information on important changes in eligibility for VA medical care and benefits, in addition to describing other available federal benefits. This year’s edition marks the addition of “Survivors” to the title as well as details on the post 9/11 bill signed into law in 2008.
