cates enamel type while the hundreds number indicates the color. The final two numbers indicate how light or dark that color is.
For example, 1505 is an opaque pastel
greenish blue for copper, and 2680 is a
transparent dark blue for copper.
Thompson Enamels are lead-free glass
products available in various particle sizes
and formulated to fit a variety of metal and
glass substrates. These products are
described in terms of temperature and
expansion to help you select a suitable
enamel for your particular project. The best
way to select an enamel is to determine their
properties in the following sequence:
(1) Fusing temperature (2) Fit or compatibility and (3) Color.
It is important to pre-test enamels prior
to using; 1) printed color charts do not always
perfectly match the product they represent
and 2) there may be slight variations in the
character of any given enamel from batch to
batch.
80 mesh enamel is the standard particle
size available to our customers unless specified otherwise. 80 mesh is glass ground to a
particle size which is slightly finer than granular sugar. It is normally applied by sifting, but
can also be mixed with water and charged
onto the substrate surface.
6/20 mesh enamels are particles that
have an average diameter of about 1/16” to
1/8”. These particles are ideal for bead making. Lump enamels (Unground, Unscreened
enamels) are particles that range from 1/16”
to 1” diameter chips. A variety of painting
and liquid enamels are also available for specific substrates listed on pages 8-12.
For expanded information about the
products found in this catalog and the technology involved to use them, see the description of the Thompson Enamel Workbook on
page 39.
All enamel products in this catalog are
numbered into a practical coded numbering
system which indicates enamel type and
color. This coding can be easily seen by
examining our color charts in the center of
this catalog. The thousands number indi-
Product Safety Information
All of Thompsonʼs enamel products are
glass of one form or another. Care should
be taken not to ingest them. These products,
however, can be used quite safely if you
adhere to the following housekeeping and
hygiene rules:
Rule I. Keep your work area neat and clean.
Keep your clothing clean.
Rule II. Use your enamels in a well ventilated work area. Wear a protective dust mask if
you are working with enamel powders for an
extended period of time. (See page 15.)
Rule III. Wash your hands prior to eating.
Do not smoke or handle food when you are
working with enamels.
Please call 859-291-3800 if more specific
information on any particular product is
required. FAX: 859-291-1849.
Food Contact Surfaces
We do not recommend the use of our
enamels for food contact surfaces. Although
they are very acid resistant and do not contain lead, their final food safe properties may
depend on enamel application and firing.
Each such item made from them should be
individually tested to determine whether or
not it passes current F.D.A. regulations. This
process would probably be too costly for the
average artist.

Antique Enameled Jewelry by Dale Reeves
Nicholls with Robin Allison
192 pps, full color, hardback. ISBN: 0-76431991-4. Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 4880 Lower
Valley Rd., Atglen, PA 19310
This is the first book to focus exclusively on
enameled jewelry. It contains a list of 77 manufacturers, going back to the late 1880s, with a
list of makersʼ marks for about half of them.
Another list provides names, and contact information, of 17 current dealers who purchase and
sell antique enameled jewelry. Very helpful is a
price guide and a chapter on how to collect –
what to look for – how to find it. Over 450 color
photographs with descriptions, size, history,
and present location of each piece. Attention is
given to significant developments in enameling
techniques, and to the symbolism found in
Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Arts and Crafts
jewelry design during the nineteenth century
and later. The most active manufacturers were
from the United States, England, Germany,
France and Norway. This is an important reference for jewelry designers, historian, and collectors. And, above all, it is a great source of
ideas for the working enamelist! A great addition to your library. TEP-031 $ 55.05
Painting With Fire - Masters of Enameling in
America, 1930-1980
by Harold B. Nelson and Bernard Jazzar
Publisher: Long Beach Museum of Art, 288 pp.,
279 color illustrations, 9” x 12”, soft cover.
This catalog/book/document traces the development of enameling in the United States during a
richly productive period of our history. The
authorsʼ effort and perspective informs all of a
heritage from within our borders as having
importance, even if imported. The perspective is
that of one written in three time periods of
enameling during the 50 years covered in the
catalog. Both Hal and Bernard elected to document a specific time period. To this end, history
in the United States will have a collective reference point that will give evidence for the rest of
time. By eliminating jewelry from the context,
the art of enameling could be addressed as
somethng more than personal adornment.

Marking Crayons for Enamel
Separation Enamel
For drawing or marking on any clean, oil free, vitreous surface. Surface can be coated with light spray
of hairspray or artistʼs adhesive prior to using

solid applications of crayon marks. Crayons are
water soluble. Fire at 1350 - 1400°F for 2 minutes
or until glossy. A cover coat of transparent enamel
is desirable.
Separation Enamel is painted in a linear design
over 2-3 coats of pre-fired transparent and/or

Dictionary of Enamelling by Erika Speel. 1998,
288 pages. The splendor of the Pala dʼOro, the
mystery of the Alfred Jewel, the genius of
Renaissance goldsmiths. The Dictionary of
Enamelling is the first book to provide a comprehensive guide to this most diverse of the decorative arts. Indispensable for anyone interested in
the evolution of the enameling techniques, the
book includes some 400 entries covering every
aspect of its history. There are entries on key
pieces, individual enamelers, designers, schools,
techniques, and the major achievements of every
era. The knowledge and insight of Erika Speelʼs
account are supported and enhanced by a brilliantly researched collection of 200 illustrations,
half of which are in full color, portraying the most
dazzling and important pieces, a unique visual
record of enameling history. TEP-011 $139.30 ea.

On Divers Arts, Theophilus. Paperback, 1979,
216 pages illustrated. Translated from Latin by
John G. Hawthorne and Cyrill Stanley Smith.
Dover Publications, Inc. New York. “I have made
it my concern to hunt out this technique for your
study as I learned it by looking and listening.” On
Divers Arts, c. 1122, is the oldest extant manual
on artistic crafts to be written by a practicing
artist. Theophilus teaches, with rigorous attention to fact but also with great reverence, the
making of pigments for fresco painting, the manufacture of glue, the technique of gold leaf on
parchment (the first recorded European reference
to true paper), how to blow glass and design
stained glass windows, fashion gold and silver
chalices, make a pipe organ and church bells.
Precise instruction (earliest known instruction) on
enameling, chasing, repoussé, niello, and beaded wire work prove Theophilusʼ first- hand knowledge of his craft. TEP-012 $14.85 ea.
The Enamellistʼs Handbook by Elizabeth and
Colin Fraser-Davies, Pitman Publishing, 1988.
The Enamellistʼs Handbook is a textbook on an
art form which has had a low profile in New
Zealand, with most books written for a classic
European culture where supplies are plentiful.
Making do with different materials and adapting
techniques is the trademark of antipodean
enamelists. TEP-007 $34.80 ea.

Enamel Marking Pens (cont.)
Use on enamel for metal, window glass,
stained glass, Bullseye and Spectrum glass,
and glazed ceramics.
Ceramic Pigments
The ceramic coloring compounds are used
like water colors for shading and details.
They are applied to the surface of enamel,
window or stained glass. The underlying
enamel/glass will be stained by firing. Since
these are highly pigmented powders, they
are used in thin, film-like layers. They are
not an enamel in themselves. They should
be covered with a transparent enamel on the
finish firing. Sold in 20 gram amounts per
pigment. Can be mixed with Painting Flux or
Mixing White.

Painting & Screening Enamels
Our GPP dry powder (page 7), premixed in
our A-14 (page 15), water miscible screening
medium. The consistency is perfect for
screening or painting, and the shelf life is
fantastic. All colors can be intermixed. If
slight thinning is desired for special applications, use A-14. For a pleasant surprise, mix
well with an equal volume of water and it is
marvelous with a quill pen. Fine line colors
with no aggravation. Clean up with water.
When used with screens made with waterdeveloped photo emulsion, clean with mineral spirits.
