ZC Sharon’s Monthly Message
Let me introduce myself to those who
have not met me yet.
My Name is
Sharon Sikes and I have the honor of
serving as your C-6 Zone Chair for our
Lion’s year 2015-2016. I joined Lions
in January 2009 and have been serving in multiple positions in both the
19C District and within my home club,
Lacey Sunrise Lions. My 19C involvement has been 2 years as service
chair and the last 3 years as Global
Leadership Chair (GLT) overseeing
club officer training, mentoring, leadership skills training and on a “GO TO”
team working with Clubs needing a little extra help to move forward successfully. Some of you may
have met me while I was a part of the faculty for the 2012 and
2014 Northwest Lions Leadership Institute. I have also been honored to be asked to present at the Anchorage, Alaska and San
Juan Puerto Rico USA/Canada Leadership Forums.
I have
served as Lacey Sunrise president, membership chair and have
chaired and served on several club committees, such as our teen
Homeless Backpack program.
Personally, I have 40 years work experience in the world of project
management and business analysis and am currently an adjunct
instructor in these fields for South Puget Sound Community College, Lacey campus. I have one son and daughter-in-law who are
both managers in the vision eye care business and currently reside
in Austin, Texas. I was born in Port Townsend, WA and graduated
from Wenatchee High where all of my immediate family still reside.
I have two children at home (four-legged) in the form of Boston
Terriers (sisters) who keep me hopping, humble and remembering
what it is like to have small children in the home (smiling).
I look forward to working with your clubs and getting to know your
members better. A mantra I use in my professional
business and is very applicable to our Lions
clubs…”Let’s Go Forth and Do Great Things.”

Lacey Sunrise Lions Officer Installation
On a sunny, warm, evening with not a cloud in the sky and temperatures in the upper 80s, what
better way to spend that time but in a crowded room with others listening to speakers? But wait!
Before you roll your eyes and sigh, it was the LSL Officer Installation Banquet for 2015. Ok, now
you have the picture! A nice air conditioned room, nicely decorated, with an open bar and lots of
friends to chat and dine with.
Held once again at the Talon Bar and Grill at the Hawk’s Prairie Golf Course the festivities began
at 5 PM and the silent auction items went on display. Pies, rugs, quilts, purses, coins, and other
items arranged for bidders. By the way, the strawberry pie went for $63! Let’s see, that’s about
$10 a slice, not bad! But the big draw was the no host bar where the line formed and the keepers
were busy. After all, it was warm outside and everyone had just braved that to be there.
KL John convened the event with the Pledge of Allegiance, songs, and a prayer after which the
group settled in for introductions of dignitaries including Past District Governors, the District Governor, a Past International Director, and several Past Zone Chair Persons, as well as out going Zone
Chairman. By the time they were introduced, the meal was ready on the buffet table which included salmon, prime rib, salad, potatoes, string beans, and later, cake, cookies, ice cream, and caramel topping. No one left hungry. In fact someone finagled her way into scoring a whole container
of caramel topping. Now I won’t say who that was but I bet if you attend an upcoming Zone Chair
meeting, you’d be able to ask her for a taste!
Next came the real reason everyone was there, the installation of the officers for 2015-16 Lion
year. PDG Rosemary Richert did the honors and had a gift for each group of officers to remind
them of their duties in the new offices. With all officers installed in their new offices, the audience
heard remarks from KL John, outgoing President, and from 1st VP Bill Miller, incoming President.
Bill’s theme for the year is “If not now, then when?”
Step up now because your support is needed and
everybody matters. By working together now, there
is no limit to the things we can accomplish, carrying
on the tradition of Lacey Sunrise Lions as one of the
leaders in the Lion community.
Finally, District Governor John Kirry spoke to the
group and commended the club on their involvement
and accomplishments. Then he announced a surprise induction. As a total surprise to Bill, his wife.
Chris, was inducted as the newest Sunrise Lion member.
Sponsored by PKL Sugar Murphy, it was a complete surprise
for Bill and a great way to start the year. Now he has someone to answer to, not only in the club but also at home! Good
luck with that one, Bill.
The announcement of the winners of the silent auction concluded the evening and raised about $400. Great way to start
another Lion Year!

Yakima Peaches, Pears and Nectarines. 20 lb. boxes of free stone peaches or nectarines are

LERC News

We are approaching the end of our Lions year and it looks like I’ve made it so far. It has been a
pretty interesting and challenging year.
Due to some changes in their lives Pat Baron stepped down as president and Sue Madsen made
some changes in her duties. I accepted President and Hope accepted recording secretary and the
changes seem to be going OK. Pat and Sue are still key members of the team and their contributions are valued.
Bert Caoili became Director of District B at the beginning of the year. We lost long time team
members and friends District D Director Russ Fineman and District I Director Jeannie Phillips and
they will be missed by all.
Carl Montgomery has taken over for Russ and Diane Neubert for Jeannie. Both are welcomed and
I am sure will be enthusiastic contributors to our program.
Longtime community volunteer Jean Cook resigned as Berta Fender’s partner in mission support.
She also will be missed but is currently assisting us with web site and email support. Jody Taylor
has stepped up and is doing well learning the intricacies of shipping glasses all over the world.
We are also pleased to welcome Ron Reierson back as our Vice President of outreach. Ron took
some time off but we are pleased to have his experience and enthusiasm back.
Aside from assuming the Vice President of Operations hat, Pat Bucknell our maintenance and construction guru has been busy. I am sure you have all heard the tales of our new annex, which
even with challenges was competed in reasonable time and we simply adjusted the budget to fit
the project!
The garage doors were removed and the spaces aesthetically filled in. It looks nice and we have
fewer critters inside.
Thanks to the support of our clubs and satellites our inventory of unprocessed glasses is good.
We have gained volunteers in all positions so our ready to ship inventory is also good.
As our year ends, I think we are doing OK. We have glasses and we have volunteers to process
them so I think we can keep the doors open.
Thank you to all of our onsite volunteers who sort, clean and get the glasses ready to ship and
special thanks to all of you who may have never seen the center but expend the time and energy
to keep us supplied with eyeglasses.
We are the Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center and are successful because so many contribute!
This has been a challenging year for me. Thank you all for your support.
Secretary Hope and I ended up in our present positions somewhat unexpectedly when these positions needed to be filled on short notice. With the
help and support of everyone involved in the Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center we are getting it done.
This month NWLERC has received 12,364 raw eyeglasses, sent 1.538
eyeglasses to 3 missions and logged 593 volunteer hours. So far this year
142,259 eyeglasses have been received and 10,074 have gone to 18 missions. 4,339 volunteer hours have been donated.
There are officer’s slots still open on the Executive Committee, contact the
center if you are available and interested.

District Governor Al Hedstrom
District Governor Al Hedstrom is from Silverdale, Washington. He owns
a business IT consulting and support company and has been a software
instructor for almost 20 years. Al has been a Lion since 1984, but a
substantial amount of that time was while he was in the Navy. He is the
charter president of the Silverdale Sunrise Lions, chartered in 1996.
Al is a Melvin Jones Fellow, has graduated from the LCI Senior Lions
Leadership Institute, and the LCI Faculty Development Institute. He has
chaired many committees in our 19C District and our Multiple District 19.
He has been an instructor and facilitator for a variety of topics delivered
to Lions at club, zone, district and multiple district venues.
The important parts of his life include family, Lions, teaching, music
(serious rock and roll, blues and jazz) and reading.
Al’s goals as district governor center on changing
for success and bringing into our clubs the Lions
of tomorrow.

For the 2015-2016 Lions year, President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada
has chosen the theme, Dignity. Harmony. Humanity. Dr. Yamada
deeply believes that human life has inherent dignity deserving of
equal respect. Every day, the dignity of life is damaged by the
devastating effects of hunger, disease, disaster and war. As the
greatest humanitarian service organization in the world, Lions
have a duty to foster international peace and cooperation in the
spirit of protecting human dignity through the collective act of saving lives, improving education, protecting the natural environment,
providing aid to the disabled and promoting international good
will. This year, join together to serve your local communities in
ways that help restore dignity, harmony and humanity to all who truly need

Dupont Lions News
Dupont Lions is volunteering labor to construct restrooms for the city's Clocktower Park. This will
be a $70,000 plus project! Local businesses, grants and the Dupont Lions club have united to help
fund this necessary project for the community. The Dupont Lion Club Members are the primary
force for construction.

Lions Project New Hope Northwest

Zone Chair Pat Bucknell has taken on a new project for 2015. After numerous Lions retiring from
Project New Hope a group of four Lions has taken on the responsibility of putting together a retreat
on Aug 7-8-9, 2015.
Presently there are 8 families stating they want to attend. Melissa Overton, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, will conduct the retreat and we are looking for Lions that would like to volunteer
and assist at the retreat. This is an important phase in the life of Project New Hope, without Lions
stepping up to help, we may be in trouble. Remember Lions, if we don’t help our Veteran’s families
who will.
We do have a very interesting proposal presented to us, The Federal Way Veteran’s Center has
stepped up and are going to put on the Women’s retreat in October. They have the people to put
the retreat on but lack the necessary funding, Project New Hope, thanks to Lions, have the funding
so we hope this turns into a great partnership. Following the Women’s retreat we will sit down and
put the partnership together.
We really need Lions to chair the Kids Camp, to oversee the Friday night registration, and chair the
Saturday afternoon Family day activities. Please let Pat know if you are interested by email:
