GIRLS INC. GEARS UP FOR SUMMER
Girls Inc. is getting ready to wrap up its successful afterschool programs, which
means Summer Camp Mania! is right around the corner. The Summer Camp will be
held from June 6th to July 29th from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
This summer Girls Inc. will continue to have the Literacy Group Initiative,
designed to prevent summer learning loss and increase the literacy skills, selfesteem and success of girls ages 6 to 12. Over the last two summers more than
80% of the girls who participated in the lit groups either maintained or increased
their literacy scores on their post-test compared to their pretest. If you would
like to share your love of reading with a small group of girls, please contact Jean
Jones at jjones@girlsincdallas.org for more information.
Special thanks to Texas Instruments for providing a $30,000 grant to Girls Inc.
of Metropolitan Dallas for the Eureka! Summer Institute program. Eureka! is a
highly successful STEM/STEAM based program for girls, which begins during
the summer before their 8th grade and concludes at the end of their senior year.
The four week Eureka! summer program takes place at Richland College, The
University of Texas at Dallas, The University of North Texas-Dallas and Cedar
Valley College. For more information about the program, go to girlsincdallas.org.
Capital One will once again host its three-week long Coders Program for
Girls Inc. girls in sixth through ninth-grade. Girls will learn about software
engineering and how to develop their own apps using MIT University’s App
Inventor. This program is an ongoing effort to help students develop a greater
interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, also known as
STEM. Capital One and Girls Inc. focused on encouraging young women to start
thinking about a career in STEM.

More than 200 volunteers will join forces on Wednesday,
May 11, to give Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas girls a new
playground from the ground up. The playground build is made
possible through the support of individual donors, Let’s Play, an
initiative by Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) to provide kids and
families with the tools, places and inspiration to make active
play a daily priority, and its nonprofit partner KaBOOM! The
build will culminate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate
the newly erected playground and making more play possible
for local Dallas girls.

PANEL DISCUSSION INSPIRES WOMEN TO MENTOR GIRLS
As part of Women’s History Month and to increase awareness about
the issues that girls face, Girls Inc. together with the Dr Pepper Snapple
(DPSG) Women’s Employee Resources Group had a panel discussion on
March 30th. The DPSG group hosted the discussion with Girls Inc. leaders
and alumnae titled, “How do we help the next generation of women
make history?” The discussion brought in over 60 women who listened
to Melanie Okon, Board Chair, along with long-time mentor Jennifer
Millspaugh and Girls Inc. alumnae Chelsea Richard, Stephanie McGary,
Candice Quarles and Margaret Grant who discussed everything from a
mentors influence in the life of a girl to tools and resources needed to
give girls opportunities. After the event the Dr Pepper Snapple team filled
summer backpacks with sunscreen, sunglasses and other goodies for
the girls and they donated first aid kits for each of our vans at Girls Inc. of
Metropolitan Dallas.
SECOND ANNUAL TENNIS
TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS
The Second Annual Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas Tennis Tournament
