June 2015 Newsletter - Pierce Distribution
June 2015 Pierce Distribution Services Company Kevin Hogan Writes... I can’t believe how fast June has gone by. We are approaching July and that means we are a couple weeks from the Rockford Pro Am. This year we have two golfers each from Komatsu and Metso. Our caddies are Jay Hogan (GM Ripley), Larry Hickey (GM Rockford), Andy Oltremari (Executive Business Mgr.) and Tim Charles (Midwest Business Mgr.). The beneficiaries of the 2015 Rockford Pro Am are GiGis Playhouse, Winnebago County C.A.S.A. and the Junior Golf Course of Greater Rockford. All are very good causes. Let’s hope for good weather which has been scarce in the Rockford area. On Tuesday and Wednesday, July 14th & 15th, we will have a second quarter Managers Meeting for two days. All General Managers will be there as well as all Business Mgrs. John Bednar and Belvidere will host this meeting. Dino McNabb, John Bednar and Andy Oltremari have been going down to Columbia to meet with the customer. Brandon Dunn and his Houston Team prepares for the move next door and the implementation of Phase II of our system (Jason Smith). Rock- ford, (Larry Hickey, John Mullin, David Frye) continues its ramping up with the new customer. Jay Hogan and his Ripley Team continue to process work and support Komatsu Peoria in setting up their new PDC. Randy Cantonwine’s ICP Team (Portland, OR) is still preparing for the huge job in Texas next year when a new huge opportunity presented itself in Massachusetts. Jeff Knapp (retired) has been working with General Manager, Randy Cantonwine, on the details for both projects. There is a new prospect who might be moving into our Las Vegas operation. Belvidere has a new contract and John Bednar’s Team is working with some customer system changes. Caterpillar has shown a great deal of interest in our Peoria location and have actually sent some work there. Tony Chiodini (CFO) and Tim Charles came to Seattle to meet with one of our customers. They had a very successful full day of meetings. I had a chance to get together with them while they were here. There are many exciting things happening and we must continue striving to give our customers the excellent service they pay for and deserve. We will ‘Do Whatever It Takes”. Finally, I would like to wish everyone who is celebrating a birthday in July a Happy Birthday. In addition to this, congratulations to all celebrating service anniversaries including two milestones: Mark Tavarez (Las Vegas) 5 years on July 12th and Steven Chipman (ICP) 15 years on July 5th. Other notables anniversaries: Daniel Yates (Belvidere) 11 years on July 12th, Eav Tan (ICP) 12 years on July 30th and Bertha Gonzalez (Rockford) 14 years on July 19th. Thank you for your service and commitment to Pierce. Kevin Hogan Jack’s Words Of Wisdom... “Waste of time is the most extravagant of all expense.” 2 Pierce Distribution Services Company Corporate Safety Writes ... With school out, many young adults have begun their journey into the workforce. Some will begin their journey with Pierce. Young workers, which OSHA considers to be those up to age 24, are often at a larger risk of work related injuries than the more experienced associates. Contact with objects or equipment was the most common source of nonfatal injury; injuries that include being struck by or against, rubbed or abraded, caught in or crushed by tools, equipment, machinery, parts, or materials. Being new to this type of work, most young adults may be unfamiliar with safety protocols; also with their inexperience many young workers may be unaware of their right to a safe and healthy workplace causing them to be less likely to speak up if something seems unsafe. Thus, making it more essential for us as employers to ensure these associates receive all the safety training, personal protective equipment, and supervision they need to safely perform their daily tasks. When training young workers we need to make certain our training is completely understood. Train by using interactive methods, visuals, quizzes, and hands on demonstrations. We should pair our younger associates with more experienced associates in a mentoring fashion. This method will provide the new associate a “go-to” person who may answer questions, provide assistance, and supervise the new associate more thoroughly than a manager who isn’t as “hands on” involved in day to day operations. Provide the new associate with PPE that fits properly and be sure to show them how to use it correctly. Make sure our training includes the following vital information: What job tasks new associates are permitted to perform or prohibited from performing. The correct way to respond in an emergency situation if one occurs What to do in case of injury or illness on the job; and Where to find safety information if they have questions after training is complete Let’s never assume our new associates will understand what could go wrong while performing their job tasks. Make sure we recognize that not all new associates, including the younger associates, follow the rules at all times, but we can do everything in our power to demonstrate job procedures, safety precautions, and lead by example to do our part in providing a safe and healthy work environment for these new younger associates as well as our existing associates. I, Curtis Robertson, started working at Pierce Distribution on March 28, 2014 through a temporary agency. Six months later I was hired on. It has been a journey for me and my family. I want to thank Brandon Dunn for giving me this opportunity of employment. I lead the Receiving Department under the supervision of Triwayne Davison. Thanks to these two gentlemen, I’m a valuable asset to the company. I currently take on many different tasks. On a daily basis I find myself picking, packing, re-warehousing, unloading trucks, receiving shipments, identifying parts, auditing orders, etc. I take pride in what I do, and I enjoy helping others. That’s what I’m here for; to be flexible, and to make sure customers are happy, so our company can continue to grow. Curtis Robertson 7 Pierce Distribution Services Company Ripley Writes... Plant 7 welcomed our Corporate HR Manager, Dean Sanderson, the week of June 15th. Dean facilitated “harassment training” for all Line Leads from all three shifts. Additional sharing of information regarding Pierce’s 401K program through Transamerica was conducted by participation of all Pierce associates through a webinar. Also, we were happy to host Jason Smith, Corporate IT Director, during the week as he visited the Plant to help update/make changes to our internet system. Both men were a little shy to our southern eating traditions as they tried to out eat each other while visiting some our unique restaurants in the area. Thanks, Guys – come visit us again soon. It’s Hard to Say Goodbye On Tuesday, June 23rd, Plant 7 hosted a Goodbye Reception for our IT Manager, Derek Messink. Derek has accepted a transfer back to the corporate office to work closer with Jason Smith. Derek is originally from the Loves Park, IL area and is returning home after four years in TN. Associates gathered in the conference room to enjoy cake, mixed nuts (not the associates), ice cream and punch and the opportunity to wish Derek good luck in his new adventure. Stepping in to Derek’s position will be Garvin Ferguson. Also part of the Tennessee IT Team is George Edley. Just remember, Derek – Friends are Friends Forever – we will miss you! Associate of the Month From One Circus to Another WOW! I have just conducted one of the most interesting interviews with Plant 7’s newest Associate of the Month winner, Gloria McDonald (also, affectionately known/called “Chop-Chop”). Ms. Gloria, 1st shift Label Maker for Dealer Return and also for Service Parts and Tokyo (when needed), is a joy to talk with. To say she has lived and experienced a multitude of exciting jobs is definitely an understatement. This month’s winner was nominated by her Line Lead, Diana Spann of Dealer Return, who appreciates the work ethic and accuracy that makes Ms. Gloria a great asset to the department. She rarely has errors and is very quick and efficient at her job. Diana states, “her quick wit will keep you on your toes as you never know what she’s going to say! She is quite a character and always takes great pride in her work. Should we need something done in a hurry, she’s the lady to get the job done.” Ms. Gloria has been with us since January 2013 and became a full-time Pierce associate in January 2015. And did I say “Rodeo”? Ms. Gloria has 15 years of “clowning” (traveling the rodeo circuit) with her famous cousin and world-known rodeo clown, Tim “Wildthang” Leopord. Ms. Gloria’s claim to fame includes assisting with the specialty act (entertaining the crowd between acts/events) with trained monkeys and dogs with her cousin, “Guitarzan”. She states traveling the rodeo circuit was sometimes difficult and challenging, but it was definitely a learning experience. Although Ms. Gloria has left the entertainment world, her cousin continues performing at rodeos, as well as NFL half-time shows. Now the plot thickens as the Cincinnati, Ohio, native admits her love for showing horses since the age of 12, and especially enjoying working as a groom with Tennessee Walking horses. (Ms. Gloria’s small stature probably made her a good candidate as a female jockey). In 1972, her love of animals lead her down the path to become a professional dog groomer, a job she still enjoys today. As we move from one circus to another, we ask why/how she ended up in Ripley, TN. She responds health issues caused her to slow down to be near her son, Hank Spurr (a brick layer) and her niece, Tracy Brown (also a Pierce associate). Her other son, Rickey, resides in Houston, TX. Although she does not get to visit with them often, she is proud of her three grandchildren, L-R Diana Spann, Line Lead Dealer Return with Gloria McDonald Mandie – age 20, Cedie – age 19, and Allyssa – age 17. There appeared to be excitement in her eyes when she talked about her black/tan 13 year old Molly, a chi-winnie, (designer dog –Chihuaha/Winnie mix). Ms. Gloria admits Molly was originally a Rottweiler until she put her in the dryer. In her spare time (really?), Ms. Gloria enjoys going to the Orpheum in Memphis to see live musicals. In May she and her friend, Pat Wallington (Tokyo Department), enjoyed “Kinky Boots”, but states it was not as good as her favorite Broadway production of “Wicked”. Ms. Gloria states, “I love working at Pierce, I love my supervisor, Judy Borgmann, my Line Lead, Diana Spann, and especially all the associates in our department”. A product of 12 years of Catholic schools (being brain-washed by the Nuns), Ms. Gloria thinks she turned out pretty good as she finds her goal in life is still to make people laugh – just ask Operations Manager, Moe Jordan. Congratulations, Ms. Gloria – we are excited to learn of your life experiences – Thanks for sharing them with us. Heather, from Plant 7’s Breakdown Department, gave birth to Arlo Elijah Bishop on June 16th. The future Alabama football player weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces and 19 inches long. Both mom and newborn are doing well. Congratulations, Heather! 9 Pierce Distribution Services Company Belvidere Writes... The summer weather is finally here, and that means one thing to me…time to go fishin’! It’s been exceptionally busy for Quality Control here at Plant 8 in the recent months. On top of common duties like working with customer service, taking care of our customers, and doing my best to assure quality of our on hand inventory, I have been helping with an extensive Customs classifications list for UPS with my good pals Susan Malames in West Bend and Karin Whyde at UPS. Each day I am forwarded a list of parts that need specific information for clearance through customs. Most of the information requested - (but not limited to) is material composition, application, function, dimensions, and photos. Keep em’ coming ladies! The week of June 8th was CRP 5 for the new IFS upgrade which is fast approaching, so I did my best helping with Inventory Control by way of handling Short Ships, Lost Parts, and RTS sheets. I enjoy the extra work load as this makes for even faster days/weeks! I’d like to thank Mr. Tyler Myers, our June “Associate of the Month” for all of his hard work and assistance during these times! He’s a great asset to the team and all of his hard work is much appreciated! Congratulations, keep it up buddy! On another note, big congratulations to Brittany James and her newborn daughter Brooklyn! We’re all extremely happy for you and your new young family! I look forward to your return to work, and we will be seeing you soon. Another HUGE shout-out for Mrs. Ashley Kettner who has done an OUTSTANDING job filling for Brittany during her absence!
