New hope for Disabled Drivers Defensive Driving Course at Emirates Advanced Driving - A newly established division of EDI EDI now offers a completely new DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE, specifically designed and tested to meet the demanding requirements of the UAE and for use also in the wider GCC. This new Course builds on the EDI reputation of the previous Defensive Driving Course – the most sought-after post-license driver training course in the UAE. The Emirates Advanced Driving (EAD) division within Emirates Driving Institute (EDI) is the leading provider of driver training and improvement programmes in the Greater Middle East, and has been at the forefront of safety improvement programmes for many years. EAD, the newly expanded division of EDI has recently created four new Driving training Programmes: the Defensive Driving Course; a Refresher (Returner’s) Course; an Expatriate combined Defensive and Orientation Course; a Desert Driving Course. Each Course combines specific local requirements with international best practice in order to provide training at the highest standards; standards not available any where else within the UAE! Having a disability need not spell the end of the road for your driving! EDI has launched a new “Disabled Driver Training Programme” in April which can add tremendous value to the rehabilitation of those who suffer from disabilities. All earlier programmes for the disabled were designed for those with right leg disability, and this is the first time a driver training programme is available which is tailor-made for those who are disabled below the waist. More on page 3... More on page 2... CovEr Story - EAD - DEFENSIvE DrIvING CoUrSE Continued from page 1 Creation of the all-new EAD defensive Course has been authored by Mr. Robert Hodges, EDI’s (HR) Development manager. Mr. Hodges is an internationally acknowledged and qualified technical expert in the field of driver and instructor training; he utilises his many years of experience in the driving sector coupled with his psychological expertise to create uniquely relevant training programmes. The new DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE from EAD is entirely different to the previous method of a non-interactive style of instruction and aims to develop each delegate’s abilities through carefully delivered individual coaching techniques. EAD encourages delegates to take responsibility not only for their own safety but also for that of others around them. EAD does not do what others do – simply give more ‘driving lessons’, we treat delegates as adults with experience and we develop their skills accordingly. EAD shows you how to THINK DIFFERENTLY about driving and also to realise what other drivers might be thinking (or doing). EAD aims to have all delegates leave their training sessions with a POSITIVE MENTAL DRIVING ATTITUDE! The combination of these improved skills, plus new generation briefing and workbook materials coupled with a great deal of practical in-car work make this course highly effective and results-orientated. The Curriculum for the Defensive Course is available in three formats, for either a single participant or for two. Each session is delivered by a team of fully-accredited and highly experienced advanced driving trainers. After initial welcome and licence-checks, the day begins with a comprehensive and highly innovative interactive presentation and discussion covering the important theory elements of the day. The delegates are guided through various key areas, including understanding the local driving environment and the local risks, a recap of the safety-orientated driving skills, and how to understand and lower the risk profile for driver and passengers alike. Perhaps the most important element of the lecture is the section covering the psychology of driving, where EAD encourages delegates to understand that greater safety for all will come from better THINKING about the way they drive. A correct mental attitude is a vital component of safer driving! Towards the end of the theory session, delegates are given an insightful interactive briefing on vehicle safety and routine maintenance checks. An important factor in the EAD methodology is that we do not simply ‘tell’ delegates what they need to do to be safer drivers; we encourage delegates to understand whom is responsible for their on-road safety and how it can be achieved. We then provide simple, easily remembered routines for the delegate to apply to their daily driving; routines which are straightforward and at the basis of safety awareness and improvement. The lecture is followed by taking the attendees to their vehicles, where the trainers carry out an active on-road assessment of the delegates’ skills and abilities behind the wheel. This session is then followed by development feedback and priority-setting from the trainers whom codify any required training on a safety and risk-minimisation basis. In order to demonstrate the ideal parameters, the trainers will next provide a ‘demonstration drive’ to the delegate, thereby illustrating the application of the development areas discussed. From this point onwards, progressive development of each delegate commences; they move onto the active driving development sessions at the wheel and are carefully guided through the elements on an individually-tailored basis. The ‘instruction’ is in fact delivered in a COACHING style; a style designed to improve the quality of communication in both directions between delegate and trainer; a process which ensures the delegate understands and takes responsibility for their positive safety progress on the road. At the end of the overall session, the trainers will engage in two-way feedback discussion and will set out a continuing Personal Development Plan to help each delegate remember the areas in which to continue to hone their safety skills. The EAD Defensive Driving training process is integrated and highly interactive, with each designated trainer staying with their delegate/s throughout the whole of the training day. Delegates are NOT passed from trainer to trainer! In this way, mutual understanding and trust is enabled, and the trainers are able to fully assess the individual delegate’s nature and driving skills level; based on which the scope for improvement and development requirements are suggested. Although it is largely about timely application of safety techniques, DEFENSIVE DRIVING is better described as a realization that driving is a privilege shared with many others. Good, safe, and responsible driving is an obligation for everyone on the road… but not always easy to practice. EAD’s DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE offers a simple usable routine involving the basic skills of Observation, Anticipation, and Planning, which can be practiced at all times behind the wheel and which is bound to consciously encourage safer, smoother, and confident driving at all times. For a safety improvement course such as DEFENSIVE DRIVING to fulfill its purpose, training is as important as the course itself. EAD offers top-notch training with customized delegate training development, which helps to address the key improvement areas of each of its delegates, thus making sure every single delegate has a workable agenda for his/her safety. A DIVISION OF EAD’s advanced courses are fully accredited by respected major Western driving sector institutions, including the Institute of the Motor Industry, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, and the International Association for Driver Education. EDI’s coaching and instructional methodology is also accredited and monitored by the AA Driving School. EDI is fully accredited to and compliant with ISO 9001 throughout all of its operations and also holds the respected OHSA 18001 Certification. With 95% of all accidents owing to human error and unsafe driving practices, it has become essential that drivers constantly work on their driving, improve their skills, and seek to gain awareness on all those aspects that would improve their safety and the safety of others on the road. And this is exactly what EAD’s DEFENSIVE DRIVING course activities. He used to drive in Pakistan using hand controls, but he is delighted to be able to drive now in Dubai as well, thanks to EDI’s pioneering training programme. “I had to take 30 classes and passed all my tests in one go. Al Jassim - Director of Drivers Licensing Department, Roads and Transport Authority, Mr. Hans Ahstrom – Area Manager Middle East, Swed Adaptation, Mr. Amer Ahmed Belhasa – Managing Director, Emirates Driving Institute The introduction of the disabled driver training programme launched by EDI can add enormous value to the rehabilitation of disabled individuals. A driving license brings with it independence, self esteem and great opportunity to actively participate in the society in which a person lives. Peter Richardson, General Manager, EDI Having a disability need not spell the end of the road for your driving! In today’s world, being able to drive has become essential to the varied and many tasks of everyday living-for example, commuting to work, driving the kids to school or running errands -and is synonymous with freedom, independence, and self-sufficiency. EDI in cooperation with Road and Transport Authority (RTA), Rashid Hospital, Arabian Auto, and a leading Swedish company has initiated the first Disabled Driver Training Programme in Dubai for people who are unable to drive using foot pedals. 27 year old Malek Yousef Iqbal was the first to get a licence in Dubai under the new initiative. Before this, institutes in the UAE offered driving classes only to those with right leg disability. Iqbal registered for the Mr. Amer Ahmed Belhasa, Managing Director, was all smiles at the achievement. “We have got two more students with a double-leg disability and they are trained by a specially trained driving instructor”, he said. “Such rehabilitation facilities were extremely scarce, which is why we have taken this upon ourselves, to provide new hope to the disabled.” Swedish experts Swed Adaptations, also known as Anpassarna, have over 40 years of experience in adapting vehicles for the physically disabled, and have teamed up with EDI in this initiative. A hand control system provided by Swed Adaptations uses a single lever, held by the right hand. This operates the accelerator and brake and carries out a number of functions usually activated by the left hand, leaving the left hand free for steering at all times. With the aid of a simple device added to the steering wheel, complete steering control is assured. and procedures are monitored closely and where necessary, changes will be introduced to accommodate the needs of disabled people who wish to drive. Peter Richardson, General Manager, Emirates Driving Institute, said, “The introduction of the disabled driver training programme launched by EDI can add enormous value to the rehabilitation of disabled individuals. A driving license brings with it independence, self esteem and great opportunity to actively participate in the society in which a person lives. There are many talented people who could make a wonderful contribution to the future of Dubai but lack the motivation because of loss of mobility.” EDI is now keen to hear from anyone who may wish to be considered for this training and would like to know more information. For further enquiries on the Disabled Driver Training Programme, kindly contact EDI on: Call Centre 04-263 1100 or Email misba@ edi-uae.com or info@edi-uae.com. A number of EDI instructors and RTA examiners have taken extensive training from qualified and experienced Swedish instructor trainers who specialize in this field of work. A license will only be issued when the candidate passes all the standard driving tests required for Dubai at the same level as any able-bodied candidate. The Licensing Agency of the RTA has been a key participant in every aspect of establishment of this service. A red-Letter Day in the history of UAE A day of immense pride for every citizen, UAE National Day is celebrated with much happiness and fervour throughout the seven emirates of UAE on December 2nd every year. It was on this day in 1971 that the rulers of the seven emirates signed a declaration that gave birth to the UAE as a country. At Emirates Driving Institute, we joined in with nationwide celebrations as our staff members and senior management came together to celebrate the 37th UAE National Day on December 2, 2008. The event was hosted with much gaiety at the premises of the Head Office of the Emirates Driving Institute at Al Qusais. NEWS & EVENtS - GAMES AND SAFETy Emirates Driving Institute sponsors Furjan District Football Championship 2009 Emirates Driving Institute partnered with the Dubai Sports Council to successfully flag off the Furjan District Football Championship 2009. The event that commenced on June 12, 2009 was held through to August 03, 2009. The parallels that can be drawn between sports and driving are one too many. Skills such as timing, anticipation, planning, ability to accurately judge speed and distance, and to make quick decisions are crucial as much on the sports pitch as it is when one is behind the wheel. Similarly, a strong sense of fairness, self-discipline, self-control, respect for rules, courtesy and patience are qualities that are admired in sportsmanship while being the cornerstones of safe and mature driving. It is this striking similarity of the two distinctly different activities that prompted EDI to support this championship. Dr. Ahmed (DSC), Mr. Peter Richardson (EDI) with Hamriya Team Besides promoting the concept of ‘Play Safe Drive Safe,’ the objective of the event was also to support sporting activities in residential areas and to encourage the youth to take up leading roles in community activities or play football during the summer holidays. “As a keen sportsman all my life, I see that the qualities of a good sportsman are also those that go to make up a safe and responsible driver and we are delighted to share this opportunity to influence the behaviour of our young citizens wherever we can,” said Mr. Amer Ahmed Belhasa, Managing Director of Emirates Driving Institute.
