STEP 6: SHUTTER HARDWARE MEASUREMENTS
EVEN IF YOUR SHUTTERS ARE TO REMAIN OPEN, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE
MOST SUITABLE HARDWARE GIVE YOU THE FREEDOM OF FUNCTIONALITY. The
instructions found below provide a straight-forward description for measuring your window‟s casing,
so that you can determine the offset, if there is any. From there, a Shutter Specialist can walk you
through the shutter hardware selection process. With our help, you will make the best hardware
choices for you and your home
MEASURING FOR HARDWARE
TO MAKE MEASURING EASIER:
To make measuring for offset easier: Place a flat piece of wood
(A) along the wall extending beyond the window casing as
shown.
FOR CASE-MOUNT HINGES:
Measure from the casing (B) to the back of the wood (A). This
dimension is considered your offset and is used when selecting
hinge offset.
FOR JAMB-MOUNT HINGES:
Measure from the back of the inside edge of the casing (C) to
the back of the wood (A) and then add the thickness of the
shutter. This dimension will tell you how many “inches open”
you need when ordering mortise hinges such as „H-style‟ or
Lull & Porter hinges.
FOR WALL MOUNT HINGES:
Measure from the casing (B) to the back of the wood (A). If
this measurement is greater that the thickness of your shutters,
then you may use a notched Pintel or a Brick Mount Pintel in
conjunction with our Heavy Duty Tapered Strap Hinge with
Attached Pin.
FOR SURFACE MOUNT APPLICATIONS:
(permanently affixed to wall)
If you are not using hinges, or pintels, taking measurements is
not required - simply use a non-corrosive fastener.

strap hinge.

strap hinge with 0” offset.

INSTALLING YOUR SHUTTERS
Like your home, shutters and hardware should be an expression of your own personal taste. Timberlane offers the most
extensive selection of shutter hardware in the industry – in other words „we have something for everyone‟. But just like a
homeowner has their own likes and dislikes, our hardware does too, so it‟s important to select the appropriate hardware for
your window. Below and on the opposing page you will see some of the most common installations. Chances are that you
will see a window situation that looks a bit like yours. The images and accompanying instructions will provide you with some
direction as to the type of hinge system which will work best. And if you are struggling, or don‟t see something familiar,
simply call one of our Shutter Gurus, they are standing by to help.
T-Notched Pintel, Notched Pintel, and Strap Hinges
Perhaps the BEST option for Brick or Stucco installations. Place a
hinge over a pintel and hold it against the top rail of your shutter. Mark
the pintels top and vertical position on the wall. Remove the shutter and
install the pintel. Place the strap hinge on the pintel, return the shutter
to the window in the closed position and align and secure the hinge.
Now let the shutter hang from the top and repeat the process for the
bottom assembly.
“H” Style Lift Off Hinges, Lull & Porter Mortise Hinge, and
Jamb Pintels
It is common that hinges of this type typically require cutting mortises
in both the shutter and the window casement, although this is not
required. Regardless, make sure to account for any deductions you
made to the shutters for clearance. Place a hinge 4” down from the top
of the casing and 4” down from the top of the shutter, less whatever
clearance you allowed for. 4” is typical but can be adjusted based upon
the application. Remove the shutter, trace the outline of the hinges on
both the casing and the shutter, cut the mortises and fasten the hinges
to both. Allow the shutter to hang from the top and repeat the process
for the bottom assembly.
Clark Tip Blind Hinge
Measure 4” down from the top of the window casing and the top of the
shutter. Transfer pencil markings on both the casing and the shutter.
Remove the shutter, and mount the male hinge on the casement and the
female hinge on the shutter. Now let the shutter hang from the top and
repeat the process for the bottom assembly.
New York Style “L” Hinge, and Plate Pintels
Place the left-handed shutter on a flat surface and affix the top hinge
leaving approximately 1/2”-1/4” from the top and side of the shutter.
Repeat this same procedure for the lower hinge at the bottom of the
shutter. Insert the plate pintels into the hinges. Place the shutter in its
closed position within the casement. Make sure the shutter is level and
mark the holes for the pintels. Remove the shutter and install the pintels
to the casement.

INSTALLING YOUR SHUTTERS
Don‟t get obsessed with having your shutters close perfectly into your window opening when you know you‟ll never close
them. Additionally, just because your home is an 1885 Stone Farm House doesn‟t mean you have to select the original
hardware, unless of course you want to. The degree of authenticity you desire ultimately drives how you measure your
shutters and select your hardware. If your goal is a complete replication down to the smallest detail, then no problem; we did
it for the White House; we can do it for you. However, if your goal is to simply “fake it”, then it opens up more options and
you can let your imagination run wild. Selecting shutters and hardware should be easy and enjoyable, if it‟s not; then call our

Plate Pintels, and Strap Hinges
Place a hinge over a pintel. Hold it against the top rail of your shutter.
Center the strap hinge on the rail with the bend in the hinge directly
over the inner edge of the casement. Hold the assembly against the
shutter, mark the holes for the pintel, remove the shutter and mount
the pintel.
Now locate the horizontal position of the bottom pintel. Draw a level
line on the casement to where the bottom rail of the shutter aligns.
Make sure it is level with the top pintel and mount the pintel. Place the
shutter back into the opening, slide the hinges over the pintels, mark the
holes and install the hinges.
Jamb Pintels, and Strap Hinges
Assemble the hinge and pintel, lay the assembly on the top rail of the
shutter centered vertically. Swing the pintel so that it is flush with the
edge of the shutter and place a mark at the bottom. Transfer the mark
from the shutter to the casement. Remove the shutter and align the
pintel with the mark on the casement. Trace the pintel, and cut a
mortise. Mount the pintel.
Return the shutter to the window opening, place the hinge over the
pintel, swing the hinge onto the rail of the shutter and install. Now let
the shutter hang from the top and repeat the process for the bottom
assembly.
Lag Pintels, and Strap Hinges
Center the strap hinge on the top rail of the shutter with the bend in the
strap hinge directly over the inner edge of the casement. In applications
where there is no casing that could be utilized for the installation of a
plate pintel, a lag pintel is commonly used (i.e. full brick or stone return,
stucco, etc.). Mark the holes.
Remove the shutter and mount the hinge. Return the shutter to the
closed position. Project a straight line from the bottom of the hinge
sleeve onto the wall and then measure approximately ½” down.
This is the mounting position of the lag screw. Remove shutter, drill a
pilot hole for lag bolt, and screw the pintel in to the depth that will
accommodate the required offset. Now let the shutter hang from the
top and repeat the process for the bottom assembly.
