HOOTS FROM THE OWLS - Northdale Civic Association, Inc.
January 2015
HOOTS OF THE MONTH
Meet Al & Sandra Reina: Al is a native Floridian born in Tampa to Dalia and Alfred, Sr.
His grandparents, Salvatore and Maria, immigrated from Sicily, Italy around 1903. The Reina
families were always involved in the grocery business in Ybor City. Years later Salvatore started
the Sevilla Olive Company on 2nd Ave. in Ybor. Al began working at the warehouse as a youngster
learning much from his grandfather. Much of his love of the food business began at that time. He
worked at the olive company until it was sold. His next endeavor was as a frozen food buyer at
Sexton Valenti Produce. After many years at Sexton’s he went to work for Kraft Foods then US
Food in the same capacity. He retired several years ago after being a food rep traveling the state.
Don’t get him started talking about food.
Sandy was born in Manhattan to Elna and Raymond O’Bryan. Her mother’s parents had
immigrated from Asturias, Spain to Cuba in the early 1900s then to Tampa; the other half being
French Canadian and Irish. When her mother was thirteen the family left Tampa for New York
because of greater job opportunities. They didn’t return to Tampa until the 1950s.
Al and Sandy actually met because her grandparents decided to build the family house right
across the street from where Al and his family would buy their house a year later. They both
went to the Washington Jr. High and then Jefferson High School. They did not date until senior
year and were married three years later. Al was working at the Olive Plant and Sandy was
raising their three children. Sandy enrolled at HCC when the youngest was five and graduated
from USF with a BA in education. She began her assignment as a first grade teacher in Plant City
later taught at Temple Terrace at all grade levels; the last thirteen years working as a bilingual
resource teacher. Al had retired four years before from US Foods and was helping with Sandy’s
mom.
Al and Sandy are blessed with eight grandchildren; six girls and two boys. Sandy was concerned
about free time after retirement; there isn’t any. They joined the Owls three years ago and now
they have Owl friends added to gym friends. You can find Al at the YMCA every morning on the
machines and in the pool. Sandy loves water aerobics at Shapes. She is an avid reader with two
kindles and a stack of books on the shelf. On
Tuesday she meets with her watercolor group;
Wednesday at St. Paul Bible study and on Fridays
you can find her at Life’s Treasures Thrift store.
Since retirement Al and Sandy have been on
many trips including Ireland, Scotland, London,
Canada AND Owl excursions (very special).
“Thank you to all the Owls that make this
possible for the rest of us to enjoy”.
Al & Sandy Reina
