MEMBER’S STORY HIGHLIGHT
Too Tuf To Be Fancy
by Tabitha Thompson

“
I think I’d like to have a baby!” That’s what I remember telling my
friend one summer afternoon. It’s not really an uncommon statement from
a 30 year old, except... I wanted a baby with four legs. I had been
competing in local show for years, but I wanted to push my horsemanship
further. Just a few months later picture of the cutest foal pops up on my
phone. The message “I found the baby you’ve been waiting for” follows.
In February of 2012, the Crager’s “The Ultimate Fancy” sired twins.
The twin’s slipped by the ultrasound and no one was aware there would be
two until she delivered. Sadly, one of the twins did not make it. The
Crager’s had thought about keeping “Sis,” as they called her, as they had
grown quite attached. They later decided that they would sell her but she
had to go somewhere special. They decided to send word out through
friends and not publicly advertise.
So the next morning we loaded up and made the six-hour drive to
Kentucky. I was so excited to get a chance to own such a nice filly that I
didn’t want to wait one day. I was afraid they would change their mind!
We met the Crager’s and enjoyed visiting their facility. We even got to
meet “The Ultimate Fancy”. However the highlight was seeing my new
baby! As we walked together she took everything in without a hint of
concern. When it was time to load up, she walked right on the trailer
without hesitation. I knew we would make a great team, and boy was I
excited. With her calm demeanor I decided to name her “Too Tuf To Be
Fancy” or Lila around the barn. Now that I had such a prospect, I was
determined she’d be her best. We immediately went to work.
As the VPHC Color Classic & Fall Futurity approached we continued
our prep. We would compete in halter, showmanship, lunge line, and in
hand trail. I was so nervous when show weekend arrived, but I knew we
had put in the work. Regardless of the other competitors, if Lila performed
in the ring like she did at home I would be very pleased. The success of our
journey together would not be determined by the number of ribbons we
collected.

where APHA members log their hours spent riding
or driving their Regular Registry or Solid Paint-Bred
Horse. APHA offers 14 achievement levels, which start at 100 hours and top off
at 10,000 hours. Patches, certificates of achievement, and discounts on Ride
America awards are given at milestones. Belt buckles are awarded for 10,000
hours. Hour awards that each rider and horse achieve are recorded on the
horse's lifetime performance record. Riders can log their hours through APHA's
online log site or submit apaper log. Once a member logs in to APHA Online site,
simply click on the Ride America Log Reports box to record hours.
https://www.aphaonline.org/aphaonline/login.aspx
VPHC Members enrolled in APHA's Ride America program can log your hours

Virginia and Carolina Junior Paint Horse Clubs join forces
to raise funds for Banks Ready Recovery
GOAL: $2,500
500 raffle tickets will be offered at $5 each for a chance to win an 11” x 14” custom oil painting by Tina Price.
Retail value $330, ($300 plus $30 shipping). Tina’s work can be seen at
http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/tina-price.html
Tickets will be available at all Carolina and Virginia events, drawing to be held Sunday December 1 st, the final
day of our 2013 show season. All proceeds, $2,500, will be donated to Banks Ready’s Recovery.
This effort has been formally coordinated and is offered in full cooperation with Banks’ father Mr. George
Ready and the artist Ms. Tina Price.
GREAT CAUSE: Banks Ready was the AjPHA President for 2008-2009, with his Presidential Service Project
raising more than $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the most money raised by a AjPHA President to
date. The 21-year-old is from Hernando, Mississippi, and attends Mississippi State University where he is
studying Animal and Dairy Sciences.
Banks was involved in a car accident on May 24, 2012, during which he sustained multiple broken bones and
internal injuries. After a long stay in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Tennessee and extensive therapy
at the Shepherd Center in Georgia, Banks was finally released to go home just before Christmas in 2012.
More information about Banks and his return to the show ring can be found on the following links:

DIRECTOR’SNOTES
Open/Amateur APHA World Championship Show -- November 6 - 17, 2013
Don't miss out on the excitement of this year's event. Green classes, barrel racing sweepstakes, USTRC roping,
and increased payouts are among a few new experiences you'll see at the upcoming OAWCS.
The new incentive program for barrel racers, Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program (PBRIP), has received a strongly
positive reception at barrel events across the country. Donors and supporters have already put together $5,000 in added
money to be split between two PBRIP sweepstakes classes at the World Show. A minimum of $2,500 will be distributed in
each of two PBRIP Sweepstakes classes—one for Regular Registry horses and the other for Solid Paint-Breds. APHA
Corporate Sponson Farnam has added $3,000 to the added money.
Team ropers on all breeds of horses are encouraged to enter the new USTRC Cowtown ShootOut event, which will be
held in conjunction with the APHA World Show. Dates for the roping are set for November 15-17 in Will Rogers Coliseum.
Produced by USTRC, this roping will be included as one of the USTRC’s 2014 80+ fully sanctioned qualifier ropings. A $5,000
cash bonus for Paint Horses has been set aside and will be offered in addition to the regular USTRC payout and prize line. If
the rider of a registered Paint Horse has a TRIAD Classification number of six (#6) or greater, and is high money winner with
that classification, the owner of the horse will earn a $2,500 cash bonus. The same $2,500 incentive bonus will be awarded
to the owner of the registered paint horse whose rider was the high money winner classified as an Elite #5 and below. The
owners must be APHA members to receive the bonus. APHA Corporate Sponsor Farnam has added $3,000 to the added
money.
The four new Green classes (Green Western Pleasure, Green Hunter Under Saddle, Green Trail and Green Western
Riding), the PBRIP Barrel Racing Sweepstakes classes, and the new Ranch Horse Pleasure Sweepstakes are non-qualifying
classes.
Mark your calendars for Convention 2014!
The annual APHA Convention will be February 21-24, 2014 at the Westin DFW in Irving, Texas. APHA Executive
Director Billy Smith has promised this will be an event you won't want to miss. With the change of dates and
format of past conventions we are looking forward to an opportunity to involve and educate everyone in
attendance with an experience that will be rewarding to you as a member, club officer, director or standing
committee member.
Plan now to attend and watch for more information.

TOO TUF TO BE FANCY ...story continued
I wasn’t expecting much out of the halter
class. There were limited solid paint bred classes for
her age group and she would be shown against older
horses. I was shocked when we won under several
judges! In showmanship we won under all 4 judges!
By the time lunge line came around, I could tell she
was exhausted before we even started. In her first
class she broke gait and I couldn’t keep her going
enough to finish the requirements. In her next class
she was still exhausted, but we did manage to
complete the class. All of the other yearlings were
tired too! We placed middle of the pack with a
complement from one of the judges on her nice
movement! After a full day of showing, I was very
pleased. I tucked her back in her stall and let her rest
up for in hand trail in the morning.

As we started the day I was very nervous, this
should be our best event. She did not disappoint.
After our first class I couldn’t have been more
pleased… until our second class, she was even better!
I couldn’t hide my smile after they announced that we
had won both the Breeders In-Hand-Trail futurity and
the Non Pro In-Hand-Trail futurity. To top it off, after
our last class one of the judges announced across the
ring “that is the best gate I’ve ever seen.” I was on
cloud nine! I had honestly never thought I would have
a horse to enter in a futurity, much less win two! I got
our pictures made and of course posted them
everywhere! I had to…. that’s what proud Mom’s do!

The Virginia Paint Horse Club Stallion Service Auction is working hard to bring another
exceptional list of participating stallions to our 2014 program. We expect more than 60
APHA, AQHA and TB stallions to participate in the 2014 breeding season.
Breeders’ Futurity Classes are open to APHA, AQHA, TB and ApHC offspring sired by
stallions that sell in the current competition year.
To make your show horse eligible for the Breeders’ Futurity Classes make sure their sire
is participating in the VPHC SSA.
If you are interested in purchasing a breeding, or recommending a stallion for
participation, please contact:
