Issue 6 WWAG Mag azine Realising Recovery & Mental Wellbeing February & March 2014 A Message From the Manager Special points of interest: Foreword by Roger Combat Stress Useful Tips Events Important Numbers Inside this issue: Advocacy 2 Combat Stress Roger’s son Valentine’s Day Tips 3 Moon Walk Community 4, 5 Events Valued Voices Back Page Contacts 6, 7 8 www.happyvalentinesday2014wallpapers.com Here we have another Newsletter packed full of information and tips so please enjoy. As Lead Provider of Community Connections Mental Health Services in Surrey we have an obligation to support and encourage user-led groups. Beginning in April 2014, many of WWAG’s groups will become userled, so we will be looking for even more volunteers. This is an opportunity for existing and new groups to become your very own. WWAG will assist with any training courses necessary. WWAG would like to encourage you to become the organisers of these groups and eventually and where appropriate, take them out into the community for everyone with mental health issues to enjoy and benefit from as part of their recovery. An example of this could be a WWAG user-led ‘Coffee in the Community Group’ in many parts of Elmbridge. WWAG will help and support the transformation of existing groups and help begin new groups. WWAG staff will help investigate suitable locations. Again as ‘Lead Provider’ we have a duty for early intervention and to help any adult with mental health issues in the community. WWAG is also commissioned to provide a friendly place to help avoid that more critical stage of secondary mental health care. ’Coffee in the Community’ groups could provide information, speakers and a warm and caring environment where everyone is made to feel welcome. User-led groups belong to everyone; we all have a role to play, whether it’s befriending, collecting money, organising and/or steering. The ethos of user-led groups could, in time, extend to many WWAG activities. WWAG has an exciting year ahead. Now changing the subject completely: I would really like to take this opportunity to thank John Stoker for all his hard work as WWAG’s Advocate. John has left WWAG’s employment and has acquired a fulltime post with SEAP. However, thankfully, he will still be holding an Advocacy clinic for WWAG members on Thursdays in the WWAG, Walton Office. There is more information about John’s new role on page 2. Thank you for all your great work John! On a personal note and to keep you up to date: My youngest son, Ben, has now been given the all clear from his 2013 battle with cancer. He is back working full time and is now also doing his bit to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Please read more on page 2 or give donations to: www.justgiving.com /Ben-Coleman6 Thank you all for your good wishes. Also on page 3 you will read about Shirley who will be doing a Moon Walk to raise money for Cancer Research. Good Luck Shirley! Finally I would like to thank all WWAG staff and volunteers for their great work and special thanks go to Toni Breen for, not only taking over the WWAG accounts from Tina, but also many of the new referrals. This means that Tina and myself are able to concentrate on other projects. Thank you Toni, we really don’t know what we would do without you—you are a STAR! I hope you all enjoy your read Roger Coleman Manager WWAG WWAG Wellness With A Goal Page 2 John the Advocate WWAG is delighted to announce that John Stoker has moved on to full-time paid work with SEAP advocacy service. WWAG hasn’t received specific funding for its advocacy work for some time now. So Over the past few months, WWAG has seen a rise in referrals from ex-service men and women and it’s really opened our eyes to the complexity of their difficulties. After bravely serving our country and seeing things that we couldn’t even begin to think of, we realised that specialised help would be needed. We now have a wonderful contact at Combat Stress called John Marham and, if Ben Coleman Further to Roger’s introduction, page 1, Ben says, “Cancer Research UK is a great charity and one of the largest around. As some of you may know over the summer I got 'lumped' with cancer myself and had to endure two operations and 3 months of chemotherapy. the amount of hard work and care that went into my wellbeing during the experience makes me want to give back something. “ We at WWAG are thrilled to bits for Ben and his family that he Roger and Tina were investigating other options for funding this important service. A meeting was had with SEAP to this end. However they currently had a vacancy for an Advocate. An introduction was agreed. you are a veteran, serving military personnel or a member of their family and need help, then we thoroughly recommend you contact him. John is a veteran himself and so understands the difference between civilian life and life in the service. Apart from many other feathers in his cap, John is also a qualified CPN and is extremely attentive and caring. John explained to us that a veteran can mean a person that has served for as little as one day! John had a successful interview and is now employed by SEAP as an Advocate. Thankfully John will still run a clinic at WWAG every Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. WWAG is really excited for John and we look forward to the new John will be able to help you with confidential advice on any mental health issues including, anger, depression and confusion. If you, or someone you know, would like to utilise these services then please contact Tina at WWAG for an appointment to see John, or contact Combat Stress directly on: - Tel: 0800 138 1619 (24 hour helpline) Text: 07537 404 719 combatstress@rethink.org www.combatstress.org.uk has now received the ’all clear’. Roger coped with the worry of his son and continued working fulltime for WWAG. Thankfully, Roger and his family were able to help Ben through his low times; he had the best mental health experts ever! Ben has been doing a Dryathlon for Cancer Research UK throughout January. Ben, you have been an inspiration to us all—thank you for sharing your story. Any donations to Cancer Research will be much appreciated. www.dryathlon.org partnership working with SEAP. John will now only be available for WWAG advocacy work on a Thursday (booking required) but he will be available through the week for any NHS queries or complaints through his new place of work-SEAP. Another great charity for veterans (or those currently serving and their dependants), is the Royal British Legion. The charity offers many services including confidential advice on money issues (debt, benefits etc.) and even has a handy man service! Please take a look at their website to see how they can help you: www.britishlegion.org.uk Or call their Contact Centre helpline on 0808 802 8080 from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week (calls are free from UK landlines and main mobile networks) for all enquiries. Kingston Peer Support Group WWAG recently had a meeting with Jason, the facilitator of a peer support group in Tolworth Hospital. WWAG doesn’t cover the Tolworth or Surbiton area, however, these areas are far more accessible to some of our Elmbridge community members, (such as Thames Ditton and Long Ditton) and we would therefore like these areas to be aware of it. The only criteria for attending the group is that you must have been through some sort of therapy. If you would like to know more, then please contact Jason on: Tel: 0208 391 4886; Email: KingstonPSG@gmail.com Web: www.kingstonpsg.wix.com/peer-support. WWAG Wellness With A Goal Page 3 Surviving Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is a time when we can show our love and appreciation to the one we care about. If we are on our own however, it can also make us feel quite lonely and leave us wondering www.furallover.com why we haven’t got that special someone to share the day with. On the other hand, some of us are content with being on our own and wouldn’t have it any other way. Anyway I have listed ten tips that you may find useful on Valentine’s. 1. Valentine’s Day is about love so why not show yourself a little love by pampering yourself. Get your nails done or have that hairstyle that you wanted. If money is a problem, then pamper yourself with a soak in the bath and do your nails. (Not just for ladies. Men can give themselves a manicure or pedicure!) 2. Invite a friend/s round to watch a film. 3. Write cards or letters to those special people in your life. Maybe to your mum or dad, sister or brother or to anyone else that makes your life that little bit easier. 4. Remember that you are not the only one who will be spending the evening on your own, there are plenty of us out there who are single and alone. 5. With regards to the above tip, why not find those who will be on their own and organise an evening out (or in). This doesn’t have to be expensive either if you all share the cost. 6. Rather than focusing on what you haven’t got, try focusing on what you do have and who in your life makes it that little bit special? Maybe you could write them a thank you letter. 7. Volunteer! By helping someone else, you are also helping yourself to fight off that loneliness. There are so many charities that could use your help. 8. Why not take a bunch of flowers to your local hospital or other organisation that has really helped you. The nurses and doctors do an amazing job to keep us all well, both mentally and physically. 9. Visit an elderly/unwell/lonely neighbour and offer to spend some time with them. 10. For some of us however, our mental health problem can mean that we don’t enjoy socialising. This could be due to social phobia, agoraphobia, trauma etc. But this doesn’t mean that we should miss out! Why not write yourself a love letter expressing all your lovely and valued qualities. Tell yourself how well you are doing under the circumstances, and give yourself a pat on the back. You could say something like, “Dear Me, I don’t tell you often enough, but I really appreciate your kindness to others/ the effort you are making in your recovery….. Etc. etc. The Moon Walk London 2014 Many of you know Ian Doy, the caretaker for the Joseph Palmer Centre. Well, in 2011 his wife Shirley was called up at the age of 49 for her first ever mammogram and was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer with lymph involvement. Over the next two years she had chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and IV Herceptin treatment. Shirley said that, “during this time the consultants, nurses, reception staff and all the other staff at The Royal Marsden, Sutton were amazing. I wouldn't be here today without the research and advances in medication that charities help fund. I am determined to be fitter and healthier than I have ever been and would like your support in achieving this goal by walking the walk and raising lots of money, please give generously.” Shirley has created a website page because she wants to make a difference. “I'm inspired by the work that Walk the Walk do, so I wanted to raise money for them as part of my participation in The Moon Walk London 2014. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Walk the Walk, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!” http://wtwalk.org/MoonWalkLondon2014/ shirley Community Centres Claygate Cobham Hersham Molesey Thames Ditton Walton Weybridge 01372 463476 01932 596031 01932 246267 0208 979 5773 0208 398 5921 01932 247549 01932 844391 Please note: Age is not an issue!
