free school meals. These families
should not complete an application for free meals. All children
in a household with any household member receiving benefits
under TANF or SNAP are eligible for free meals. Only one application per household is
required.
If any children were not listed
on the notice of eligibility, the
household should contact the
local educational agency (LEA) or
school to have free meal benefits
extended to them.
Families receiving commodities through the Food DistribuProgram

Reservations (FDPIR) can request an Interagency Action Notice that can be brought to the
school in place of an application
to document free meal eligibility,
or they can complete an application and list the FDPIR case
number. All children in a household with any household member
receiving benefits under FDPIR
are eligible for free meals.
If the school knows of children
who are homeless, runaway, foster, from a migrant household, or
who are enrolled in Head Start,
they will send a letter to the
household telling them the children are eligible for free meals.
Contact the school if there are
questions or if the household
does not get a letter because
these children may be eligible for
free meal benefits. The household must notify the school if it
chooses to decline benefits.
Foster children that are under
the legal responsibility of a foster
care agency or court are eligible
for free meals. Any foster child in
the household is eligible for free
meals regardless of income.
Households may include foster
children on the application, but
are not required to include payments received for care of the foster child as income. Including
children in foster care as household members may help other
children in the household qualify
for benefits. If the foster family is

not eligible for free or reduced
price meal benefits, it does not
prevent a foster child from receiving benefits.
To apply for free or reduced
price meals, other households
should fill out the application and
return it to the school. An application must include the names of
children for whom benefits are requested, all household members
and their monthly income or designation that they do not have any
income, and be signed by an adult
household member with the last
four digits of that person’s social
security number. An application
for free or reduced price benefits
cannot be approved unless complete eligibility information is submitted, as indicated on the
application and in the instructions.
Households with any member
who is currently certified to receive Assistance Program benefits
may submit an application for
these children with the abbreviated information as indicated on
the application and instructions.
Additional copies are available
in the school office. The information provided on the application is
confidential and will be used for
the purpose of determining eligibility status for school meals and
Title I programs. The school will
provide additional information if
it wants to use eligibility status
for other purposes.
An eligibility determination is
good for the whole school year;
however, applications may be submitted at any time during the
year. Contact the school if a
household member becomes unemployed or if the household size
changes. The children from that
household may be eligible for free
or reduced price meals or free milk
during the time of unemployment
if the household’s income falls
within the income eligibility
guidelines. Information on any application may be verified at any
time during the school year by
school or other program officials.
If a parent or guardian is dissatisfied with the ruling on the application for eligibility, she/he may
contact the determining official on
an informal basis. If the parent or
guardian wishes to make a formal
appeal, an oral or written request
may be made to the school’s hearing official for a hearing to appeal
the decision.
Some schools may choose to
send a special notice about the
Children's Health Insurance Program to households with the application. It provides a way for
school personnel to know if families will allow them to use students' eligibility status for other
program benefits. The decision
whether or not a household is eligible for meal benefits or not is not
affected by this form.

Child and Adult Nutrition
Services in the South Dakota Department of Education announces the policy for free milk
or free and reduced price meals.
The policy applies to children unable to pay the full price of meals
or milk served under the National School Lunch, School
Breakfast and/or Special Milk
Programs. The administrative office of each school that participates in the Lunch, Breakfast
and/or Milk Program has a copy
of the policy available for review.
Children from families whose
income is at or below the levels
shown are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Children from
a household whose income is at
or below the level shown for free

milk if the school participates in
a federally funded pricing Special
Milk Program.
Families may apply for free or
reduced price meals or free milk
for their children for school year
2015-16 according to guidelines
effective July 1, 2015. Applications will be provided to households by the school. Families that
are directly certified as eligible
for free meals will receive a notice of eligibility.
The school will use the prior
year’s eligibility status (free, reduced price or paid) from last
year for up to the first 30 days of
school or until a new application
is approved or direct certification
is obtained, whichever comes
first. When the carry-over period
ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household
submits an application that is
approved, the children must pay
full price for school meals and the
school will not send a reminder
or a notice of expired eligibility.

NEW UNDERWOOD “TIGERS”
Superintendent | George Seiler
My name is George Seiler and
I am the new superintendent/elementary principal of the New
Underwood School District. I look
forward to working with the staff
to help our school and students to
continue to achieve academic success. Furthermore, I’d like to
thank all the people of the New
Underwood area for allowing me
the opportunity to help assist the
staff in the education of our students.
This year will be the first year
of the new School Performance
Index (SPI) system which the
state is utilizing. The SPI takes
into account the Smarter Balance
test scores as a portion of the rating. We will release the scores
after we have received them from
the South Dakota Department of
Education. My understanding is
that the scores will be available
by the start of September. The
SPI takes into account attendance rates K-12, student
achievement K-12 (state testing),
academic growth K-8 (starting in
2015-2016), graduation rates,
high school completion, and college and career readiness. We
will look at the data as a staff and
use the information to determine
our strengths as a district and
look at our weaknesses and come
up with a strategy to improve on
our weaknesses.
Additionally, I look forward to
working with the elementary
staff, students, and parents this
year as the elementary principal.
This year we have a counselor
who will teach our elementary
students life skills once a week in
each grade.
Please make sure that you update your contact information
with the school if it has changed
so we can contact you with school
information or in case of an emergency as well as any weather related announcements.
I am excited to be a part of such
a great school and community.
New Underwood has a strong culture of excellence in both academics and athletics. I am proud to be
an administrator of a school that
has built such a strong tradition
and I know that together we will
work hard to continue the legacy
which is associated with being a
New Underwood Tiger.
If you have any questions or
concerns feel free to contact me at
the school at 605-754-6485 or
email me at george.seiler@k12.

Secondary Principal | Peggy Peterson
I would like to take a little time
to welcome everyone back to
school this fall. We are looking
forward to a productive and exciting school year. I am looking forward to working with our new
group of seniors and am counting
on them to provide some good
positive leadership for all of our
underclassmen. I know it will be
a very busy year for them as they
have to start making decisions
about their future plans.
We will have several new faces
on the junior high/high school
staff this year:
•Heidi Doyle – biology I & II,
chemistry, 7th/8th science
•Chris Stoebner – K-12 guidance
•D.J. Toczek – U.S. history,
world history/world geography,
government, sociology/psychology, 7th geography
Support staff and administration:
•Shawn Mills – assistant custodian/assistant cook
•Julie Neugebauer – K-12 special education aide/dishwasher
•George Seiler – K-6 principal
and superintendent
I hope that everyone will make
these new staff feel welcome in
our school and community. If you
see them on the street, at a game,
or in the hallway, please, take a
minute to stop and say hello.
We are also fortunate to have
many of our junior high/high
school faculty and staff returning
this year:
•Katie Albers – 8th english,
english III & IV, drama, senior
experience/careers & employability
•Connie Boomsma - speech
•Larry Broomfield – personal
finance, 7th/8th computers, desktop publishing, 4th-6th computers, multimedia
•Alicia Christensen– K-12 special education

•Gloria Smith – head cook
•Kevin Strand – K-12 technology coordinator
•Amanda Trople – secretary
•Casey White - custodian
I would like to welcome our incoming seventh graders to the
junior high/high school end of the
building. We are excited to have
you join us on this side of the
building this year. We know that
things will be new and different
for you as you move from elementary to junior high but the most
important thing to remember is
that all of your teachers and all of
the support staff and administration are here to help you to be
successful, so if you have any
questions, please ask. There is no
such thing as a silly question and
more than likely there are sev-
eral others sitting around you
wishing that someone would ask
the same thing. I would also encourage you to try out the activities and groups that are now
open to you and to attend the
sporting events and activities
that we have going on. This will
help you settle in, meet new
friends, and maybe even try
something that you have not
tried before.
At this point I would also like
to send out a special welcome to
any new students that will be
joining us this year. If you have
not already done so, we would encourage you to take time to register your children at the high
school office during the next week
so that they are ready to go on
that first day. If you are enrolling
in high school for the first time at
New Underwood it is helpful to
have a copy of your transcript
from your last school but if you do
not have this a list of courses that
you have already taken will work
to get the process started.
A special thank you goes out to
the custodial staff and their summer helpers for all of the work
they have put in this summer
getting our buildings and
grounds ready for the new school
year to begin. We appreciate all
of the hours of hard work that
you have put in making it shine
and we will do our very best to
keep it looking good.
Finally, I would like to add that
our parents are an important
part of their children’s education
and I would encourage each of
you to get involved. This can be
as simple as asking your children
about what they did at school
that day, volunteering to help out
in a classroom, sharing a special
talent that you have with a class,
or visiting with your child’s
teacher. I fully believe that it
takes all of us working together
for our children to have a successful result. Thank you ahead of
time for your help and support.
As always, if you have any
questions or concerns, please feel
free to stop in to see me.

Football team sets high goals for a great season

by Chastity Julson
After a stellar 2014 season that
included making it to the playoffs, then graduating several
strong senior players, the New
Underwood Tigers are ready to
hit the gridiron again with a new
coach and new goals.
Seven seniors bring their experience to the field this year, including Dylan Pulfrey, Lane
Byrne, Tristin Red Leaf, Colton
Clemens, Nick Baker, Stetson
Stover and Justin Oberlander.
According to New Underwood
Tigers head coach D.J. Toczek,
the Tigers again have their eyes
on making it to the playoffs, but
the athletes are also willing to
take the season week by week
and to adjust their goals according to the learning and growing
that needs to occur each week.
All the talent

anywhere
without your
teammates.
Unknown
For now, the Tigers are working
to get through their week of
training without injuries, then
they will set their sights on their
first game, which is against
Kadoka, at home, Aug.28.
The Tigers have already
demonstrated a commitment to
work hard to better themselves
on the field. In June, athletes
who planned to participate in the
2015 football season attended a
summer camp at Black Hills
State University. Tiger football
athletes have also joined Toczek
for regular conditioning throughout the summer.
Toczek said that fans can ex-
pect to see a running and passing
game this year. “It will be similar
to last year, just higher paced,”
Toczek said.
The Tiger athletes are mentally sharp, Toczek said, which
enables them to bring a smarter
game to the field.
Assistant
coach
Brady
Carmichael is in charge of the defense. Toczek said the emphasis
for the defense will be on having
a high turnover rate.
Managers for the team are Brianna Philipsen, Sierra Oberlander and Kaylee Clark.
Welcome back, teachers & students!
We look forward to
working with you this year!

Volleyball team young, but eager for action
by Chastity Julson
Fundamentals and building for
the future will be the main
themes for the New Underwood
Lady Tigers volleyball team during the 2015 season.
Of the 22 athletes who have
gone out for volleyball this year,
13 of those are seventh graders,
head coach Brandi Brassfield
said.
“The girls are very excited and
really want to play volleyball. We
are still a young team, though,
and we have a lot of learning to
do,” Brassfield said.
A look at the roster confirms
the youthfulness of the Tigers’
team. There are currently two
juniors, Carissa Anderson and
Ashley Parsons, on the team, and
one senior, Karlie Robertson.
The Tigers graduated a strong
group of seniors last year, and
several other upperclassmen who
have played volleyball in the past
are not joining the team this
year.
Despite the inexperience of the
team as a whole, though, Brassfield expects the team to have a
good season. “We have a good, energetic group. I look forward to
seeing growth throughout the
season,” she said.
Brassfield, who has coached
volleyball for 10years and has
been head coach for three years,
plans to run a 6-2 offense again
Chastity Julson
Eager to see action are the members of the New Underwood volleyball team. Back left-right: head coach Brandi Brassfield, Carissa Anderson,

Cross country runners ready to sprint to the end
by Chastity Julson

the team’s chances at getting several of their runners qualified for
the state cross country meet.

Sophomore Nathan Nixon and
seventh grader Jordan Wright
will compete in the boys’ cross
country race. Nixon competed in
cross country last year as well.
Wright is new to the sport. The
team has a good chance at qualifying at least three of the four
runners for state, though it will
take hard work, Finkbeiner said.
“The boys are young, and they
need to improve to make it,”
Finkbeiner said.
A major change this year is the
distance of the girls’ race. Previously, the boys ran a 3k and the
girls ran a 2k. This year, the race
distance has changed, so everyone runs a 3k. This means that
the girls’ race has increased in
distance by nearly a mile.

tice, then in the race, when the
distance is shorter, it should be
easier for them,” Finkbeiner said.
In order to replicate the terrain
that the athletes frequently encounter during their competition,
the cross country athletes will
train by running on the road
south of New Underwood, which
tends to have lighter traffic than
the road north of town. The hills
to the east of New Underwood
are also good for training,
Finkbeiner said.
The Tigers’ cross country team
will compete throughout the
area, including Faith, Wall,
Philip, Presho and Custer.

Welcome to the 2015-16 school
year! As you return to school this
fall you will notice a few changes
that have occurred while you
were on break. We have com-
pleted many facility updates at
all our locations and hope that
you enjoy them and that they
serve to enhance the student’s educational process for years to
come. I would like to recognize
the janitorial staff as they have
really worked hard at preparing
our facility and grounds, while
keeping up with the day to day
operations. They have done a remarkable job.
Around school we have are
preparing for the arrival of our
students and staff. The center of
what we do can be found in our
mission and vision statement.
This is our central focus and driving force of what we try to accomplish, as well as, how we go about
that. As the world evolves and
changes around us we focus on
giving our students the tools to
succeed in their future endeavors
after they leave our school.

This year one area of focus
throughout K-12 that we will be
looking at is MTSS (Multi-Tiered
Systems of Support) and PBIS
(Positive Behavioral Intervention
Support). Many of our teachers
attended training over the summer and have developed a plan to
bolster support and foster additional success for our students
throughout their educational career in in our school system.
I am excited to begin another
great school and look forward to
what this year has in store for us.
With the school, parents, and
community all working together
we can build a stronger student
and bright future for our students. I encourage you to stop by
and visit if you have any questions as we navigate through the
year.

Elementary Principal | Jeff
First and foremost, I wanted
to welcome all students, parents,
and other stakeholders back for
another successful year with the
Kadoka Area School District. If
you are new to our district, you
have come to a great place! The
number one resource we have in
our communities are the people!
Even though each community in
our district is unique in their
own ways, priority is put on
being certain that our kids are
well-educated! I find it most fit-

ting to share the Kadoka Area
School District’s mission and vision with you all.
The MISSION of the Kadoka
Area School District is: To prepare all students to reach their
full potential in an ever changing world.
The VISION of the Kadoka
Area School District is: The
Board of Education, Administration and Staff of the Kadoka
Area Schools will be responsible
for making our school a place
where students become lifelong
learners. Our students, with the
support of their parents and
community, will become active,
productive members of society.
Partnerships with each community within our district
boundaries are necessary towards the successes of the students. In an ever-changing
world, we need to stick together
and keep our focus on student
success! We shouldn’t put focus
on our differences, we should be
putting our focus on our shared
mission, to prepare all students
to reach their full potential in an
ever changing world!
Much focus during the upcoming school year will be put on our
Multi-tiered Systems of Support
(MTSS) with the implementation of our Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)
program and continued focus on
Response to Intervention (RtI).
PBIS is a proactive approach to
establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed
for all students in a school to
achieve social, emotional and academic success. RtI allows us to
identify individual student’s
math and reading needs by
using a universal screening tool.
When those needs are identified,
we are able to get those students
extra practice in those specific
skills to help ensure academic
success!
We encourage parent involvement and are always looking for
ways to better the education for
each and every student. With
your support of our shared mission, the students attending
school in the Kadoka Area
School District are in great
hands! I’m looking forward to a
great 2015-16 school year with
you all as educational partners.
Sincerely,
Jeffery M. Nemecek

their elementary children to a
bus stop or to school if the miles

The Kadoka Area High School
football team began practice on
Thursday, August 13 with 25 excited young men who are ready to
play some football.
The Kougars are looking to improve on an injury plagued 1-7
season from a year ago. Players
lost to graduation include Herbie
O’Daniel (All Conference), Jed
Brown, Wyatt Enders, Aaron
Janis, Brendon Porch, and Dylan
Riggins.
The roster this year includes
seniors - Dustin Enders, Kyler
Ferguson, Steven Kiewel, Matt
Pretty Bear, and Jarret VanderMay. Juniors - AJ Bendt, Geoffrey DeVries, Colby Enders, Tate
Grimes, David Kary, Daniel Randall, Paul Smiley, and Storm
Wilcox. Sophomores for the
Kougars this year include Patrick
Brown, Stanley Colbert, Abe Herber, Sage Keegan, Brian Letellier, Peyton Loibl, Seth Patterson,
Jory Rodgers, and Reese Sudbeck. Incoming freshmen are
John Daly, Marcus Herber, and
Tel VanderMay.
This season’s schedule provides
a lot of challenges for us. We play
in the very competitive Western
Great Plains Conference and all
six of our conference games I expect to be very tough battles. New
Underwood, Philip, Stanley
County, Rapid City Christian,
Wall, and Lyman should all have
good teams this year. I expect
some great football once again for
all western South Dakota football
fans!
This year did pick up two different games. We will play
Platte/Geddes for our homecoming game on September 18 at 6:00
p.m., and we travel to Edgemont
this season as well. I expect both
of these two games to be very
competitive, as both teams had
good seasons last year and both
bring back many of their players
from a year ago.
We are looking forward to the
challenges that the season will
present, the lessons that will be
learned, and the memories that
will be made. We also can’t wait
to hear the Kougar fans cheering
us on under the Friday Night
Lights! Go Kougars!!!

Volleyball team prepares for season
Robyn Jones
Kougar volleyball team, back row: Aybree Pitman, Allie Romero, Scout Sudbeck, Emily Knutson, Shaina Solon, Syd Word, and Shai Lamont. Middle: Savannah Solon, Kaylee Eisenbraun, Jerica Coller, Tyra Fugate, Kassie Hicks, and Rikki Bettelyoun. Front: Katy O’Daniel, Anna Stone, Miranda
Dale, and Ciara Stoddard. Not pictured: Ajiah Ortiz-Pierce, Jossie Kukal, Lavin Bendt, CeeCee O’Daniel and Jade Hutchinson.
The volleyball season got underway with practices starting on
Thursday, August 13. We have
twenty-three girls competing for
positions at the high school level.
This year’s varsity team will be
composed of young and old, and I
believe we will be more competitive than last year.
Volleyball is a ball control
game - you have to be able to pass
the ball to the setter to stay “insystem” and win. I believe we will
have a pretty good group of girls
passing the ball out of the backrow teamed with some girls that
can attack the ball. How well we
do will depend on the chemistry
and communication of the girls
on the floor, consistent serving,
and their ability to play strong
defense and transition that into
kills.
Senior participants are Shai
Lamont, Scout Sudbeck, Allie
Romero, Kassie Hicks, Rikki Bettelyoun, and Jerica Coller. Juniors: Syd Word, Ciara Stoddard,
Emily Knutson, Miranda Dale,
and Shaina Solon. Sophomores:
Tyra Fugate, Aybree Pitman,
Ajiah Ortiz-Pierce, and Jossie
Kukal. Freshmen: Kaylee Eisenbraun, Anna Stone, Alyssa Civitak,
Katy
O’Daniel,
and
Savannah Solon. Junior high:
Lavin Bendt, CeeCee O’Daniel,
and Jade Hutchinson.
The team’s first match will be
Thursday, August 27, at Kadoka,
versus Little Wound, starting
with the “C” match at 5 p.m.

season and competing as a team
to the best of their abilities.
Both Coach Keena and Dylan
have been enjoying getting out
and running with this talented
group of dedicated athletes and
look forward to seeing them pursue their potential in the sport of
distance running.
The Kougs first race is Friday,
August 28 at Douglas High
School at 9:00 a.m., if anyone in
the community can make it out to
support the team we would be
grateful to have you cheer us on.
The next Friday, September 4 the
team heads to Faith for a 10 a.m.
race and the following Friday,
September 11 at Wall for a 10
a.m. race as well.
The team’s quote of the week
comes from Steve Prefontaine a
USA Olympian distance runner
from Oregon, “To give anything
less than your best is to sacrifice
the gift.”
Anyone interested in coming
out in the morning and running
with Kougs is welcome to contact
either Coach Moro for more information. Thanks and go Kougs!

PHILIP “SCOTTIES”
Superintendent | Keven Morehart
The 2015-2016 school year is
underway!
There are a lot of changes up
here at the school in regards to
staff. New additions to the staff
are as follows; Lauren Adrian –
fifth grade, Lissa Papousek –
sixth grade, Mandie Menzel –
high school principal/athletic director/technology coordinator,
and Kelsey Hostutler – Milesville
teacher. Staff movement includes
Tracey Hand – junior high math
and science and Kim Bouman
moved to high school science. I
hope when you see these individ-
uals you well give them a warm
Scottie welcome.
The janitorial staff has done a
tremendous job of getting the facilities ready for the 2015-2016
school year. The library has
moved up to A1 and A2, Mr. Tom
Parquet’s computer class has
moved to A-3. The old Library is
now the new wrestling room.
The breakfast program is still
going on and hopefully the kids
take advantage of this opportunity. Hours for breakfast will be
from 7:30 a.m. – 7:55 a.m.
The parents and community

are reminded to come up to the
high school office and purchase
their activity tickets for the
school year sporting events. Also
we do have a sign-up sheet to be
ticket takers. These sheets are in
the high school office. Parents are
also reminded to fill out the free
and reduced meal application located in the offices. The more we
get to sign-up and qualify, the
more it helps our district when
applying for grants!
That is all for now. If you have
any questions or concerns please
feel free to contact us at the
school.
Welcome back to the 2015-16
school year! I’m excited to begin
my new position as junior
high/high school principal and
athletic director as well as continuing my technology coordinator
position. I had the opportunity
last year to work with the staff
and students and already know
what a great bunch I have to
work with!
The only staff changes that the
junior high and high school students will see in the classroom
are Mrs. Hand will be teaching
junior high math and science and
Mrs. Bouman will teach high
school science. School will begin
Aug. 19, with classes beginning
at 7:50 a.m. and dismissing at
3:39 p.m. I can’t stress enough
how important attendance is to a
child’s education. Not only do students miss out on important instruction when they are absent,
but it also affects their permanent school records. I know that
it is not always possible, but
please try to schedule all appointments on days that school is not
in session.
I am very passionate about education and want to see children
succeed in the classroom. Please
do not hesitate to ask if you
should have any questions for
me. My door is always open and I
want us all to work together to
create the best environment possible for our students’ education.
I look forward to working with
you!
The South Dakota High School
Activities Association reminds
you that high school sports may
not require a text book or take
place in a classroom, but they
teach valuable lessons and prepare young people for life.
Students who participate in
activities are more likely to enjoy
great academic achievement. If
you think high school sports are
only about competition, think
again. High school activities are
a winning part of a complete education.

The South Dakota High School
Activities Association reminds
you that high school activities
are more than competition and
performance.
Each event is a crash course in
cooperation, a test of dedication,
and character development. Stu-
dents who participate in activities are more likely to enjoy
greater academic achievement
and learn lessons not taught in
the classroom.
High school activities are a
winning part of a complete education.

Scotties harriers look for great season
by Ralph Kroetch
The Philip Scotties cross country team began the 2015 season
with lofty dreams and expectations.
Though graduation took three
of the 2014 state champion boys’
team, the 2015 boys speak of, and
expect yet another great season.
The spots vacated by Tristen
Rush, Nelson Holman and Kruse
Bierle total 10 years experience
in competition. These spots will
be filled by enthusiastic young
athletes.
The team’s 2014 leader, Garrett Snook, returns after his top
10 state placing to lead this year’s
team. Joining him will be fellow
senior, Keegan Burnett, also a
member of the 2014 state team.
Juniors Damian Bartels with
five years cross country experience and rookie Chase Wright, a
member of the 2015 fourth placing track team; and a well seasoned and much improved
sophomore in Connor Dekker
complete a strong, experienced
2015 boys’ varsity team.

2015 season fully expecting to

on the east end of the Philip armory. Despite losing Katlin
Knutson and her two years experience at the state championships.
Senior Ellie Coyle returns for
her fifth and final season after
earning a third place finish in the
2014 state championship, making
her the highest placing Scottie in
the 2015 season.
Joining her is sophomore Anna
Belle McIlravy, a rookie with
three years track experience;
freshman Jasmine Ferguson begins her third year in cross country and was a member of the 2014
ninth place Scottie team; eighth
graders fill much of this year’s
team with Josie Rush, Grace
Pekron and Bailey Bierle. All
three were strong contributors to
the 2014 team with Josie and
Grace qualifying individually for
the 2014 state meet. Bailey and
Grace were part of the 2015 region champion track team.
The seventh graders Kennah
Gartner and Dilyn Terkildsen
look to contribute to this year’s
team, both being part of the first
ever sixth grade class to be part
of Scottie cross country 2014.
This brings us to the second
year of sixth grade cross country
participation and three boys,
Ethan Ferguson, Reese Henrie
and Clark Hindman. Ethan has
been part of the Scotties’ youth
cross country for the last three
years.
We are fortunate to have two
student managers in senior
Tyshia Ferguson in her sixth year
of cross country and Hanna
Theye, starting her second year.
These two girls take care of
equipment, times and meet pictures.
The Scotties will compete Friday, Aug. 28, at 9:00 a.m. in the
Douglas High School meet on the
Box Elder golf course.
Welcome back,
students & faculty …
and best wishes
in the new school year!

Boys of fall ready for gridiron action
Nancy Haigh
Football players for the Philip Scotties are looking forward to another great season of football. The boys of fall include back row from left, Trew DeJong, Brice Hanson, Wade Kroetch,
Kaylor Pinney, Lane Kroetch, Scott Rafter, Lane Williams and Madyson Morehart; middle row are Carson Hamill, Pedro Dennis, Cooper West, Nick Donnelly, Dalton Kinsley, Riley
Heltzel and Hunter Peterson; front row are Dawson Reedy and seniors Braden Puhlman, Grady Carley, Jace Giannonatti, Rance Johnson and Deontae Thorn. Not pictured is Clayton Fosheim.
by Nancy Haigh
While losing some key players
from last year’s 8-0 Philip Scotties, the team has a strong returning group that will be able to
step in and pick up where the
team left off last year.
Graduating last spring were
Brayden Fitch, Paul Guptill,
Brody Jones, Austin Pinney,
Blake Puhlman and Ben Stangle.
Returning as seniors to lead the
Scotties are Grady Carley, Jace
Giannonatti, Rance Johnson,
Braden Puhlman and Deontae
Thorn.
Juniors include Nick Donnelly,
Clayton Fosheim, Riley Heltzel,
Cooper West and Dalton Kinsley.
Sophomores are Trew DeJong,
Lane Kroetch, Kaylor Pinney,
Dawson Reedy and Scott Rafter.
Freshmen on the squad are
Pedro Dennis, Wade Kroetch,
Carson Hamill, Brice Hanson,
Hunter Peterson and Lane
Williams.
Student manager for the year is
Madyson Morehart.
Head coach Keven Morehart
said the winning attitude of last
year’s team will help this year.
But, it will be tough, as it always
is.
With White River and Jones
County combining teams this
year, it bumped them up to the
11B division, taking them from
Philip’s schedule. The South
Dakota High School Activities Association selected Rapid City
Christian and Edgemont as replacements. Morehart said he requested Harding County and
Faith, to no avail.
Rapid City Christian finished
the 2014 season with a 7-1 record.
He expects them to be tough, especially as they are the first game
of the season, Aug. 28. Philip will
have home field advantage,
though.
Morehart noted that both
Kadoka Area and Lyman have returning members that are excellent players. New Underwood
and Stanley County, he said,
have new coaches, which needs to
be considered in game strategy.
The freshmen players will see
some field time on special teams,
he said. The sophomores and upperclassmen may see action in
different positions as he sees how
the team meshes together.
Though the team is low in
numbers with just 21, Morehart,
said they are quality players and
they look forward to another winning season.

Fun with science
Encouraging a child to explore
their world and how things work
may help them as an teenager or
an adult.
One way is by doing simple science projects using things found
in most homes. The experiments
help teach them reasoning skills
as well as making them comfortable with science.
Some good websites include
•35 Science Experiments That
Are Basically Magic at www.buzz
feed.com/h2/ pulse/mallorymcinnis/we-ve-got-magic-to-do-justfor-you#.kld75 az10. As you scroll
down there is another link to the
page that will tell you have to do
the experiement.
Some of titles are Lemon Volcano, Electric Eels, Heat Sensitive, Color Changing Slime,
Fizzing Bath Dough, Transform
Egg Shells Into Glimmering Geodes, Magnetic Slime and a Moon
Dust paint recipe.
•http://sciencebob.com/category/experiments/. You can make
your own rock candy, blobs in a
bottle, bend water with static
electricity, make a paperclip
float, roll a pop can with static
electricity and levitate an orb.
/how-to-train-your-dragon/science-experiments. This is part of
the DreamWorks website. Some
experiments include cleaning
with lemons, how does soda affect
metal objects, what makes honey
scrystallize, magical ketchup and
rain in a jar.
There are so many websites of
this sort, an Internet search will
bring them easily to you.
If an individual student or
team wins a high school state
championship, it’s an amazing
thing. It’s also just icing on the
cake. That’s because young people in South Dakota who participate in education-based activities are already winners. Studies show that win or lose, participation helps to impart skills
they can use to enjoy greater success in other areas of their lives.
School activities teach the benefits of teamwork, the value of
self motivation, and the importance of accountability. They also
help to foster stronger work
habits and higher levels of selfesteem. In other words, the true
value of school activities cannot
be measured in terms of wins or
losses. If an individual or team
goes to state, it is an incredible
accomplishment. But regardless
of the outcome, today’s studentathletes are already destined to
go far. School activities, a winning part ot a complete education.
Icing on the cake

South Dakota High School Activities
Association.

Volleyball team aims for excellence
by Nancy Haigh
A strong core of returning players will aid the Philip Scotties in
their 2015 volleyball season.
Even though seven seniors from
last season, Courtney Bartlett,
Brett Carley, Justin Cvach, Peyton DeJong, Hanna Hostutler,
Katlin Knutson and Ashton
Reedy, graduated, head coach Ella
Smith looks for the team to be
strong.
The two returning seniors, Ellie
Coyle and Libbi Koester, along
with juniors Tia Guptill, Shay
Hand, Peyton Kuchenbecker,
Cheyenne Pinney and Elise
Wheeler have all seen lots of court
time.
Stepping up this year are sophomores Mikayla Addison, Bobbi
Antonsen, Sage Bierle, Kendal
Hook, Jada Jones and Jaisa Snyder. Fellow sophomore Payton
Schoenhals is student manager.
Freshmen team members are
Fillingim,
Sage
Samantha
Gabriel, Jewel Jones, Cylver Lurz,
Tessa Menzel, Aitanna Nadala
and Cappie West.
Smith noted that some younger
players will have to step up and
fill some big spots left open by the
graduates. Three of those positions involved good setters, which
is important to get the offense
going, she said.
Those younger players who are
willing to step up and work hard
will earn those positions. “Losing
seven seniors leaves a lot of opportunity for the girls to work towards a position,” said Smith.
This is the second year that
Smith and assistant coach Dani
Fitch have coached the Scotties’
volleyball team. Smith said she
looks for the upperclassmen to
lead the team as they know what
she and Fitch expect of them.

“We go into every game expectOne aspect they are working on ing it to be a tough one that we are

during a game. “You can’t get that Smith. She is glad that the Scot-
ties have quite a few home games
this year, and they look forward to
defending their home court.
Smith is excited to see what the
Scotties can do this season. The
team attended camps and open
gyms during the summer months.
These allowed them to learn important game aspects that will aid
them this season.
“Last year was a big change for
Dani and myself, as well as all of
our girls. This season we have a
year under our belts, so we have a
better idea of what to expect
throughout the season,” said
Smith.
The Scotties open their season
in Kadoka against the Kougars,
Sept. 3. Their first home match is
set for Sept. 8 against Jones
County.

Technology News | Mandie Menzel
It is that time of year again
where our children are running
to many different activities.
In an effort to keep up with
them this is often the time that
new phones and other technology
are purchased. With our children
having access to so many different devices, such as computers,
iPads, tablets, phones, etc., it can
be nearly impossible to keep up
with it all. We are finding that
children are able to operate these
devices much better than adults.
We live in the digital age in
which our digital footprint is
something that will be with us
forever. Our young people are
given the responsibility of the
digital world without a lot of instructions or warnings of what
the consequences of misbehavior
may be, what a future college
may see, or what a future employer may know about them before they even have an interview.
Words like anonymous, disappearing and hidden are words
that are used in the cyber world,
but are in fact nearly impossible
to achieve with today’s resources.
Anonymous does not mean law
enforcement officials can’t reveal
who you are. There are young
teens who have had charges of
sexual harassment, bullying, etc.
placed against them for inappropriate Snapchats and texts.
There are parental controls
that you can apply to your children’s devices.
For iPads, iPhones, iPods
Go to Settings
General
Restrictions
Enable Restrictions (you will
need to add your own passcode to
enable)
For Android devices
Download a parental control
app
Android 4.3
Settings then to Users and add
users or profile. Then add a restricted profile.
**I am not as familiar with Android devices and most of what I
found suggested downloading a
parental control app.
I am definitely not an expert in
this field and am learning something new every day when it
comes to what can be done with
different apps.
We continue to block what we
can while the students are at
school and want to work together
to protect everyone in our community. Keep in mind that the
school can only control what a
student has access to on a school
device.
I encourage you do discuss the
responsibilities that come with
the use of technology with your
child.

The B vitamins - Riboflavin
helps with energy production and
the catabolism of fatty acids. Thiamin helps generate energy from
carbohydrates. Niacin helps with
energy transfer during the metabolism of glucose, fat and alcohol. B6 is involved with the
metabolism of amino acids and
lipids.
Vitamin E helps with blood circulations and protection from
free radicals.
Magnesium helps with metabolism.
Phosphorus aids in building
strong bones.
Manganese helps the body
form connective tissue, bones,
blood clotting, aids in metabolism, calcium absorption and regulating blood sugar.
Potassium plays a key role in
skeletal and smooth muscle contraction.
Copper aids in red blood cell
production, helps keep nerve cells
and immune system healthy.
Zinc helps wounds heal, aids
the immune system.
Selenium also helps the immune system.
Vitamin K helps blood clot and
helps keep bones healthy.
If your body has too much of a
vitamin or mineral, it can be
detrimental, so before taking
large doses of supplements,
speak with your doctor.
