Just a Thought...
In the aftermath of the Christmas days at Old St. Pat’s, I continue
to be amazed at the dedication of so many women and men, young
adults, teens, and families who create such a powerful experience
of Church. Thank you so very much for literally “packing” this
place these past few days for our Christmas celebrations. We
were delighted by so many out-of-town guests and relatives, lots of
college students home on break, and by all of you who sustain Old
St. Pat’s throughout the year with your goodness, prayers, and generosity. I was so
conscious of the many folks who are “Chicago transplants” and came up to me the
weekend before Christmas to say “good bye” as they were preparing to go back home to
visit their families for Christmas. Trust me: you were with us the entire time in
prayer, song, and spirit! Welcome back to your Chicago home of Old St. Pat’s!
If you’re looking for anyone around the Old St. Pat’s Mission Center this week, they’re
OFF! And how well-deserved this time of rest is for all of them. I can only say one
thing regarding the staff of Old St. Pat’s: you are being well served! We have the best
staff of any church organization and parish in the Roman Catholic world, including
the Vatican! I am continually amazed by the creativity, generosity, and graciousness of
our Old St. Pat’s team. Working for the Church does not mean great salaries for
anyone. Yet, all throughout the year, the staff of Old St. Pat’s always rises to the
occasion for our ministries, our special events, and the overall mission of this Church
in the city. We are blessed by all of them. I am one lucky priest to be working with
such talent and dedication. Rest up, team!
We stand once again at the threshold of a new calendar year. As we bid farewell to
2009, we are all aware of those who faced (and continue to face) such tremendous
challenges this year. There will be new challenges ahead in 2010. Our greatest
strategy is our prayer with and for one another. Let us be people of great hope and
celebrate well the joys and blessings of our lives in the New Year.

A WAKENINGS
FEAST OF RESILIENT HOLY FAMILY
t is strange to hear today’s Gospel that honors the Feast of the Holy Family when only two days ago Jesus was being born in a
stable. All of the sudden, He is twelve years old already?
I
Ask many parents, and it does indeed go nearly that quickly. In a blink of an eye, the children have gone from taking their first steps
to their first day of school, and onto their first time behind the wheel. And just as in today’s Gospel, time hasn’t passed without some
trials and tribulations…
Brigid Cashman, veteran Frances Xavier Warde staff member, and long-time member of Old St. Patrick’s, shares some thoughts with
us in raising today’s holy family...
The lines were long and the screams were blood curdling recently on the day the H1N1 flu shots were given at The Frances Xavier
Warde School. Every good parent who wanted to protect his/her darling from the insidious virus was there on the bitter cold
December day to get the vaccines. Enduring the lines and the screams was inconsequential compared to the horrific alternative.
Protecting our children is our job as parents, isn’t it? Protecting, yes — but controlling to the extreme, no. In the past decade, there
has been a tremendous increase in the number of parents trying desperately to keep their children from pain and life’s hardships.
We control all dimensions of our children’s lives: we don’t want our children to be in pain, so we take them to a myriad of
specialists. We recoil when they fail a test, so we confront the teacher. We are incensed when our child doesn’t “start” in a game, so
we verbally assault the coach. But as the Holy Family showed us so many years ago, we must remember children are resilient.
And in order to become resilient, they need to experience pain and loss.
No, I am not a proponent of the swine flu; in fact, like the Blessed Mother who scrambled in panic when she was separated from
Jesus, I constantly worry about my five-year-old daughter. When Mary did finally reach Jesus after three days, she admonished
him for making her worry. It was Jesus who reminded Mary He was fine — of course, He was fine! He knew where to be, He knew
to whom He should turn. He had been raised to find comfort in the temple, and He knew that upon separation from His parents,
He should return to what He felt was His second home. Mary should not have worried about His ability to make the right choice.
We should take the example from the story of the Holy Family. We must let our children make their way, occasionally choosing the
path that might not seem “right” to us. We cannot protect them from everything; they are resilient, and they will bounce back and
actually learn from the pain and mistakes they encounter. Like Mary and Joseph, we must straddle the fine line: gracefully
embracing the gift of parenthood without overly controlling or protecting our children. Parenthood, two thousand years ago truly
was not all that different from raising children today, and we should take our cue from the Holy Family.

MAKING EVERY DAY CHRISTMAS IN OUTREACH

YOU’RE ALL INVITED…
Around this time of the year, I receive numerous phone calls regarding volunteering on the actual holiday itself— Christmas Day.
And my response has always been the same; we need volunteers every day of the year and the holidays tend to be overwhelmed
with volunteers. I try to encourage people to volunteer the other 364 days of the year.
HAVE YOU EVER …
• Realized how blessed you are with basic computer skills, the ability to write a resume, and complete a job application? Why not
consider volunteering with the Adult Literacy Program and share the gift of reading and writing with an adult in need.
• Had an emergency surgery where you were in need of donated blood? If so, think about donating a pint of blood at the annual
Old St. Pat’s/American Red Cross Blood Drive. If you are unable to donate, please consider volunteering to child sit while other
family members donate their blood.
• Felt really empowered in a new suit, or work outfit? Share your gently used work clothes with The CARA Program and provide
an opportunity for other adults to wear suitable clothing for interviews, etc.
• Met a child with HIV+/AIDS in this country? Volunteer at the Old St. Pat’s Foster Kids Night at The Children’s Place.
• Watched your kids play soccer in a league? Help collect used soccer balls for the kids of Coprodeli in Peru, or Friends of
Fabretto in Nicaragua.
• Hung your child’s artwork on the refrigerator for all to see? Collect and donate art supplies for the children of Kenya and
Global Alliance for Africa?
• Felt the pangs of real hunger? Organize a canned food drive at your office for the Greater Chicago Food Depository?
• Fed the homeless of Chicago? Gathering up a couple of coworkers and volunteer at the House of Mary and Joseph Shelter
during the winter.
• Been released from the hospital, but still in need of tender loving care in order to heal completely? Why not think about
spending some time at Interfaith House playing cards with somebody on the mend?
• Received a scholarship to continue your studies? Did you know $150 provides a complete year’s high school education in India
for a child from LIFT (Leading India’s Future Today)?
• Shared a cup of tea with your grandmother? Volunteer with the Little Brother’s – Friends of the Elderly
and give some time to a lonely senior?
• Been a woman in transition, not really sure of what life holds for you
next? Share a dinner with a resident of Marah’s Permanent Housing?
• Held a brand new baby in your arms? Help a teenage mom learn the
ropes of new motherhood at New Moms, Inc.
• Enjoyed watching the Olympics on television? Join the cheering section for our
Special Olympics kids from the South Side?
• Lost your lease or been without a place to call home? Share a meal with the
homeless Hispanic families of Su Casa.
• Rocked a sick child in your arms? Volunteer your time and provide compassion
to the chronically ill children of the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital Pediatrics
Program. Participate in the Vineyard/LIFT (Leading India’s Future Today) Annual Wine
Auction each November.
Please put your thinking caps on and together we can channel your energies into
a worthwhile project or cause.

Steve Bevans will explore the issues of, among others, aging clergy
and the lack of vocations, the continued experience of women
being called to the priesthood, and the explosion of vocations as
the center of gravity as Christianity moves to the global south.

Louis J. Luzbetak, S.V.D., Professor of Mission and Culture,
S.T.B., S.T.L., Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome; M.A., Ph.D.,
University of Notre Dame; Study: University of Cambridge
Stephen Bevans is a Roman Catholic priest in the Society of the
Divine Word, an international missionary congregation, and served
for nine years (1972-1981) as a missionary in the Philippines. He is
past president of the American Society of Missiology (2006), and
past member of the board of directors of the Catholic Theological
Society of America (2007-2009). In 2009, he was a visiting lecturer
at Yarra Theological Union in Melbourne, Australia, and this fall
(2009), he is serving as Scholar in Residence at the Crowther
Center of mission studies at the headquarters of the Church
Missionary Society in Oxford.
His publications include: Models of Contextual Theology (2002),
Constants in Context: A Theology of Mission for Today (2004, with
Roger Schroeder), Evangelization and Freedom (2009, with Jeffrey
Gros), and Introduction to Theology in Global Perspective (2009).
Gene Ahner
Adjunct Faculty, Catholic Theological Union;
M.A., Systematic Theology, Gregorian University, Rome, Italy;
Doctoral Candidate, Fordham University, New York
Gene Ahner is human resource director and officer of Wells
Gardner Electronics Corporation, Chicago, IL. Mr. Ahner has been
in the field of human resources for more than thirty years. He also
serves as Adjunct Faculty at Catholic Theological Union.
Courses taught include “Living the Moral Life,” “A Free Market
Economy, Ethics, and Globalization,” and “An Introduction to the
Thought of Bernard Lonergan.” He is currently a participant in a
Lilly funded grant to develop an interdenominational program that
would better prepare students of ministry to address the issue of
“The Christian’s Calling in the World.”
Mr. Ahner has recently published Business Ethics: Making a Life,
Not Just a Living (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2007).

M.A., Ph.D., University of Notre Dame
Fr. Edward Foley is a member of the Province of St. Joseph of the
Capuchin Order. Fr. Foley is past-president of the North American
Academy of Liturgy, and a founder and originating member of the
executive committee of the Catholic Academy of Liturgy. He sits on
the executive committee of the International Academy of Practical
Theology. Foley is currently professor of Liturgy and Music at
Catholic Theological Union.
Fr. Foley has 19 books to his credit, including the well-known From
Age to Age that has been expanded and completely revised
(Liturgical Press, 2008). He has also authored more than 300
scholarly and pastoral articles and reviews.
Helen Cahill, D.Min.
Claret Center
Helen Cahill, D.Min. is a Dominican Sister of Peace who serves on
the staff at the Claret Center Resources for Counseling and
Spiritual Direction. In addition to giving spiritual direction,
Sr. Helen gives directed retreats and offers workshops on a variety
of topics. She is an adjunct faculty member at Catholic Theological
Union in Chicago.

frequently as a punch line in Catholic humor. In Liturgy, we speak about celebrating the sacred mysteries. The idea of “mystery” is
no stranger to the Catholic world. But how are we to best understand the concept of mystery?
This presentation will invite you to consider a spiritual understanding of mystery. In common usage, mystery often refers to
impenetrable puzzles. In the geography of spirit, mystery speaks to the endlessly accessible, to the inexhaustible layers of
meaning that can be found in our life experiences. Please join us for a very down-to-earth consideration of living with mystery

SIAMSA NA NGAEL CONCERT CHOIR
Tuesday, March 16, 2010 marks the 14th year of our annual Siamsa na nGael program at Chicago's
Symphony Center. This year we will again be performing works by Ireland's Shaun Davey and Liam
Lawton and arrangements by Chicago's very own Gary Fry and Scott Stevenson. We will introduce
some new composers as well, namely Arvo Part, Mary McAuliffe, and Charles Villiers Sanford. It will
be an exciting concert featuring choral and orchestral music, step dancing, Sean-nos singing, vocal
solos, Irish trad band, and narration. It is a program you won't hear anywhere else, and an event you
won't want to miss.
We extend an invitation to you to be a part of this celebration of the Celtic Arts by joining the Old St.
Pat's Siamsa Choir. If you are a singer — professional, amateur, Karaoke, or shower — please come
and join us. You will meet some wonderful new people and create beautiful choral music! You will
laugh and be inspired! You will be able to tell your friends you sang on stage at Chicago Symphony
Center, and in Gaelic no less!
Auditions will be on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Old St. Pat's Rectory,
just behind/west of the church at 718 W. Adams. Our first rehearsal will be on
Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 - 9:15
p.m. until the concert. There will also be a special rehearsal on Monday, March
15, 2010 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Old St. Patrick's Church, and a rehearsal on Tuesday,
March 16 beginning at 4 p.m. at Symphony Center.

January 2010 - Programs at Career Transitions
Center of Chicago (CTC)
I would like to thank the members and friends of Old St.
Pat’s for their support of The Career Transitions Center
(CTC). This support has made a real difference in the lives
of the 540 professionals seeking work during this past,
very challenging year. Every week, we hear of “landings”
that not only restore income, but also dignity and a sense
of hope for our community, city, and country.
CTC serves predominantly mid-career professionals, a
segment of the workforce particularly hard-hit this past
year. Sixty-five percent of our clients are 40 to 59 years
old, and another ten percent are 60 to 70 years of age.
Forty percent of our clients are single, many without
family or close community in Chicago. The shift in the job
market has resulted in not only the loss of jobs, but
derailed careers. Many jobs lost in Chicago simply won’t
be replaced when the economy slowly begins to improve.
Indeed, for a large percentage of clients, this is the first
time they have experienced job loss. As one professional
explained, “CTC was invaluable for me from day one of
my search to have a place to connect with people, and a
structure to serve my progress. The coaches gave me
valuable input in setting career goals and were helpful
with my final negotiations for my new position.” We are
increasingly helping clients reinvent themselves, and to
determine what they do that is valuable and relevant,
either in an organization or as an independent.
We serve clients and the community with more than 2,500
job/career coaching appointments, 150 programs, and
outreach events. Our work is made possible by an
engaged board, a small committed staff, a dedicated team
of more than 40 volunteer career coaches, sponsoring
organizations, and gifts of generous individuals.
We continue to feel the pressure of serving additional
people in need. I am pleased to share with you CTC will
be expanding its space in January 2010 to include three
new coaching offices, and space for meetings and
programs right here on the Old St. Pat’s campus in the
Center for Social Concerns, 703 W. Monroe, Chicago. We
hope you will be interested to know more. We invite you

LifeMap: Personal Development and Life Planning
Can you envision a life of fulfillment and contribution personally, at work and in
relationships? Led by CTC founder, Al Gustafson; and Laura Sterkel, director, CTC
programs and coaching, Al and Laura are affiliated with The Purpose Project, a
collaboration of Richard Leider with The Center for Spirituality and Healing at the
University of Minnesota. This special work-life coaching program is ideal for
individuals as well as couples who want to create a clearer direction and to work
towards a life of greater purpose and meaning. This could be a great opportunity for
those in a life change: job/career transition, mid-career, mid-life, and pre-retirement.
This program begins on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2010 from 6 - 8 p.m., and continues
for a total of four consecutive Wednesdays, plus an additional final session. The
cost of $300 [$200 for CTC clients] includes all materials for the program and two
individual coaching sessions.
As part of a line of programming focused on innovation and entrepreneurship,
sponsored by Charter One Bank, An Uncommon Way Forward, Thursday, Jan. 21,
2010 from 1 – 3 p.m., will help participants crystallize a vocation-based work and
career vision and advance their employability through a portfolio of marketable
proficiencies. The "portfolio career" model conjoins self-styled independent
contractorship with any combination of at-will or contract employment, internships,
business ventures, and volunteerism. Led by entrepreneur, Peter Willert, who has
navigated through his own life’s work as an educator, coach, business development
professional, and entrepreneur. This program is offered to CTC clients and coaches.

BOOK CLUB
The Book Club meets on the second Sunday of every month from
September to June. Book Club meetings are held in the library on
the third floor of the Fr. Jack Wall Mission Center at 711 W.
Monroe, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. The library is wheelchair accessible.

The Adoption Group
The rest rooms are located on the lower level of the
church, at the foot of the north stairwell, in the foyer of the
church hall, and at the west side of the hall. The hall may
be reached via the north stairwell, or the elevator in the
north tower only. The balcony can be accessed by using
either the north or south stairwell.
In consideration for all, please put all cell phones and
beepers on silent mode as we begin Mass.
The purpose of the Adoption Group is to provide a supportive
social network for adoptive families.
Nursery Service
Nursery service is available during the 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. Masses
in The Frances Xavier Warde School building. Enter the school on
Des Plaines Street.
The Baptismal Program and Schedule
If you have difficulty approaching the altar for Holy
Communion, please tell an usher, and Communion will be
brought to you.
The Baptismal Program offers educational opportunities for
parents. To schedule a baptism, please contact Betty O’Toole,
baptism scheduler, at bettyo@oldstpats.org or 312.798.2366.
Low-Gluten Hosts Available at all Masses
Low-gluten hosts are available for those who, for health
reasons, cannot receive the regular Communion host. If
you would like to receive a low-gluten host, please inform
the Mass coordinator, before Mass begins, that you would
like to receive a low-gluten host. At Communion, please
identify yourself to the presider as the person to receive
the low-gluten host.
Family Choir
Braille and large print worship aids are available for your
convenience. Please ask an Usher if you would like to use
one of these items.
Inspired by Old St. Pat’s Outreach, S.P.O.K.E.S. was formed to
introduce our children to outreach projects in which they can feel
they have made a difference to others.
We do have a small lift, without stairs, for access to the
church and hall. The entrance is on Des Plaines Street,
through the gate just north of the main church steps.
Moms And Tots Group
If you need a hearing device, please ask an usher.
A sign language interpreter will be available at the 5 p.m.
Mass every Sunday. Please sit in the second or third
pews on the Joseph side of the altar if you would like to
utilize this service.
EXIT In case of an emergency, please exit the church through
the three sets of double doors located in the rear of the
church or by the exit door located behind the
Altar screen.
The Family Choir is open to family members who would like to

St. Pat’s Opportunities for Kids to Experience Service
The Moms and Tots Group meets once a month during the day.

Parents and Tots Group
The Parents and Tots Group is open to moms and/or dads and
meets on the second Sunday of each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Feast of St. John the
Apostle (apostle,
evangelist, first century)
It is God who calls; human
beings answer. The vocation
of John and his brother
James is stated very simply
in the Gospels, along with that of Peter and his
brother Andrew: Jesus called them and they
followed. The absoluteness of their response is
indicated by the account. James and John “were in
a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their
nets. He called them, and immediately they left
their boat and their father and followed him.”
(Matthew 4:21b-22).
For the three former fishermen — Peter, James, and
John — their faith was to be rewarded by a special
friendship with Jesus. They alone were privileged to
be present at the Transfiguration, the raising of the
daughter of Jairus and the agony in Gethsemane.
But John’s friendship was even more special.
Tradition assigns to him the Fourth Gospel, although
most modern Scripture scholars think it unlikely the
apostle and the evangelist are the same person.
John’s own Gospel refers to him as “the disciple
whom Jesus loved” (see John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2),
the one who reclined next to Jesus at the Last
Supper, and the one to whom he gave the exquisite
honor of caring for his mother, as he stood beneath
the cross of Jesus. “Woman, behold your son ....
behold, your mother” (John 19:26b, 27b).
Because of the depth of his Gospel, John is usually
thought of (and depicted) as the eagle of theology,
soaring in high regions where other writers did not
enter. But the ever-frank Gospels reveal some very
human traits, and Jesus himself gave James and
John the nickname, “sons of thunder.”
The Apostle John is traditionally considered the
author of the Fourth Gospel, three New Testament
letters, and the Book of Revelation. His Gospel is a
very personal account. He sees the glorious and
Divine Jesus already in the incidents of his mortal
life. At the Last Supper, John’s Jesus speaks as if
he were already in heaven. It is the Gospel of
Jesus’ glory.

Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton (married woman,
religious founder, 1774 - 1821)
Mother Seton is one of the
keystones of the American
Catholic Church. She founded the
first American religious
community for women, the Sisters of Charity; she
opened the first American parish school, and
established the first American Catholic orphanage.
Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was born Aug. 28, 1774,
and by birth and marriage, she was linked to the
first families of New York. Brought up in a strict
Episcopalian home by her mother and stepmother,
she learned the value of prayer, Scripture, and a
nightly examination of conscience. Her father, Dr.
Richard Bayley, did not have much use for churches,
but was a great humanitarian, teaching his daughter
to love and serve others.
The early deaths of her mother in 1777 and of her
babysitter in 1778 gave Elizabeth a feel for eternal
life after death. At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of
New York and married a handsome, wealthy,
businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five
children before his business failed and he died of
tuberculosis. At age 30, with five small children to
support, Elizabeth was widowed and penniless. As
she struggled to make ends meet, she witnessed the
power of Catholicism through the thoughtful actions
of some close friends. Three basic points led Elizabeth
to become a Catholic: belief in the Real Presence,
devotion to the Blessed Mother, and a conviction the
Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ.
Many of her family members rejected her when she
became Catholic in March 1805.
To support her children, Elizabeth opened a school in
Baltimore. The thousands of letters of Mother
Seton reveal the development of her spiritual life
from ordinary goodness to heroic sanctity. She
suffered great trials of sickness, misunderstanding,
the death of close loved ones (her husband and two
young daughters), and the heartache of a wayward
son. She died Jan. 4, 1821, and became the first
American-born citizen to be beatified (1963),
and then canonized (1975). She is buried in
Emmetsburg, Maryland.
