In This Issue...
Dear Friends,
Jashn — Our Sports and Cultural Festival
What I witnessed during Jashn – India’s First Senior Living Sports &
Cultural Festival organised by Ashiana – was without doubt the best
experience I have had this year. For the two days of the festival, I saw
energy, competition, collaboration and love. I am unable to express my
feelings in words. Every time human potential is pushed, a better world is
born and I believe I saw that happen during Jashn.
When an 85-year-old competes in a walking competition, when a carrom
game finishes at midnight, when the finals of a Table Tennis match last
for an hour, and when the grand finale is an 80+ couple, dressed in the
most beautiful wedding finery, walking the ramp with love in their eyes...
words cannot do justice to the emotions one feels. I would like to thank the
entire team, the residents, the vendors and the participants for making
the event a grand success.
Another reason for my happiness was the launch of the book ‘Wisdom
from the Heart’ by Madhu Chandra (Editor of Apna Ashiana). The
book covers key principles and lessons from the life of the founder of
Ashiana, Mr. Om Gupta. We have already received many compliments
for the book. If any of you want a free copy, please send an email to
rememberingom@ashianahousing.com
My own view is that the book, with simple stories about Om Gupta, talks
about his way of living life and what we can learn from it. In the next issue
I would like to carry the feedback we get for the book so please send in
your feedback to rememberingom@ashianahousing.com
The ‘josh’ for Jashn was evident in participants
and spectators alike

addressing a full house at Pune
Mr. Ankur Gupta, Jt. M.D., Ashiana
Housing gave an enlightening talk about
various aspects of Senior Living at Hotel
Vivanta by Taj at Pune on August 31.
He spoke about the purpose behind
Ashiana’s Senior Living complexes and
what it offers. He also explained the
concept of Continuing Care Retirement
Communities and Aging in Place as the
150-strong audience comprising existing
and prospective Ashiana customers
listened with interest.
The audience was later enthralled by
the performances of our Senior Living

The word 'winning' here refers not just to the winning, successful strategies that
are responsible for the standing that Ashiana today commands, but also for Om
Gupta's endearing, straightforward and easy-to-follow approach to living the best
life possible. Friends, associates, employees and family members shared thoughtprovoking incidents, inspiring learnings and heart-stirring stories. The result is the
book, 'Wisdom from the Heart - Life and Career Lessons from the Life of Ashiana's
Founder, Om Gupta'.
The book was launched at the Jashn 2014 finale ceremony in Bhiwadi on Sept. 28, 2014.

Wisdom from the Heart
Helping others grow, improve and lead a better life...this was a passion, a zeal and a way
of life for Om Gupta, founder of Ashiana Housing Ltd. People who knew him in different
capacities and across all age groups wrote touching letters after his passing in January
2013; they talked of how much they had learnt from him and how he had been
instrumental in improving their lives. These letters inspired the thought that we should
record and share with others the winning ways of Om Gupta.

At Anantara, work continues at a good
pace for timely handing over to our
customers. Taurus is ready for painting,
RCC work is complete in Gemini, Leo is
in the final slab stage and Orient’s slab
has been cast till the 9th floor.
Slab casting is complete in all eight
buildings in Phase I of Ashiana Town.
This was achieved in record time, thanks
to the efforts of VP Mr. P.K. Jaiswal and
his team of engineers.
The sample flat of Ashiana Dwarka,
Jodhpur is ready. It was time to invite
our customers for a visit to get a good
look at it. We combined this with a
‘Know Your Neighbour’ event where
we entertained our guests with a
comedy plus musical evening, besides
giving them an opportunity to meet one
another. Our Ashiana Amarbagh and
Ashiana Dwarka customers attended
the event.
Visitors to Vrinda Gardens were
impressed and curious on seeing the
curing procedures being carried out.
Our engineers were happy to explain the
process and its advantages.
A happy occasion was the celebration of
Vishwakarma Puja at the site, followed
by lunch.
Ashiana Navrang, Halol, Gujarat
The eye-catching structure of Ashiana
Navrang, Halol
The Halol team’s focus on constructing a
complex that will elicit a ‘wow’ response
is apparent at this stage itself! Five out of
the eight building structures of Phase I
are complete till the top most roof slab.
The final work of the 2BHK flats has
also begun. The roof slab of the Club
House building is at an advanced stage
of construction.
The entry road under construction at
Ashiana Navrang, Halol
The entry road from the Halol-Godhra
side to Ashiana Navrang is also fast
coming up. In a mood to celebrate
this wonderful beginning of Ashiana
in Gujarat, the sales team celebrated
Ganesh
Chaturthi
with
Ganesh
Sthapana, a cultural programme and
dinner at Aditya Birla Insulators, Halol.
It was a great success with the entire
staff of Aditya Birla Insulators joining us
in the function.
The entire team at the construction site
is motivated and works diligently to be
chosen to hoist the Go Ashiana flag - in
keeping with a system started 4 years
back, the supervisor with the highest
daily achievement of targets hoists the
flag.
Since future home owners regularly
visit the site, our office came up with a
thoughtful idea - a play room in the Sales
Office to keep kids happily busy while
their parents check out their future
home! The initiative has won great
appreciation from grateful parents.
Mr. Dwarka Das Vyas inaugurating the

spread across 12.5 acres of land and
will have 912 Comfort Home units with
facilities like a club house, swimming
pool, kids play area, jogging tracks and
outdoor sports facilities.
The Ashiana Jodhpur team also
participated in the Industrial Fair 2014
held at Jodhpur in September. We got
a great response at the fair with fortythree families showing an interest in our
Ashiana Dwarka project.

Curing is the process by which concrete
is protected from loss of moisture and
kept within a reasonable temperature
range. This process results in concrete
with increased strength and decreased
permeability.
Curing is carried out for both internal
and external purposes, for seven days,
3 times a day, using a sprinkler so that
water is not wasted and it stays on the
surface for a longer time.
Teachers' Day at Vrinda Gardens
Vrinda Gardens celebrated Teachers'
Day by having a special function
for our customers who are in
the teaching profession. It was a
way of showing gratitude to our
‘gurus’ who help us progress in life.
Vishwakarma Puja was held at all our
sites, with the workers enthusiastically
taking part in the proceedings. The Puja
was followed by a sumptuous meal.
About a hundred guests enjoyed the
event which had games, activities,
dance and music, followed by brunch.

Not-so-Trivial Pursuit What ‘Graha Pravesh’ signifies for us in India, ‘Housewarming’ signifies for people in other
parts of the world. Though the word is now associated more with a party to celebrate a new
home, traditionally it was the gift that one took along that held a greater significance. Here’s
what typical housewarming gifts signify:

each face as they competed in various
events like table tennis, chess, carrom,

rangoli making, flower arrangement
and salad making. The sports related
competitions had begun taking place a
month earlier at the respective locations
and the finals were held on Sept. 27 and
28 at Bhiwadi.

Some seniors who took everyone’s
breath away were the Ramp Walkers and
in particular the regally attired Sharmas
who won the first prize. Then there was
the sprightly and enthusiastic Mrs. Sudha
Gupta, the eldest Jashn participant at
85, who finished fourth in the Walking
Competition. The Giddha performance
by senior ladies was also special as they
sang live and danced on stage!

The newly-opened Care Homes at Jaipur
A significant step towards senior
citizen care was the inauguration of the
Ashiana Care Homes facility at Jaipur in
July.
Ashiana Jaipur residents, including
members of the RWAs, Ashiana Jaipur
staff members as well as senior staff
members from Bhiwadi were present at
the ceremony.
The facility was inaugurated by renowned
educationalist Mr. Hari Ram Swami, who
has had a long and exemplary career
with the Government of Rajasthan and
has authored many books.
Residents were given a tour of the place
and shown the facilities. Dr Muralidhara,
Manager Care Homes, gave an audiovisual presentation in the Activity Hall to
inform the guests about the services at
Care Homes. He also spoke about the
need for and the advantages of such a
facility.

Ashiana arranges for children from
Ashiana Phoolwari to visit Care
Homes residents periodically for intergenerational interaction which is good
for both age groups. The kids sing
bhajans, recite poems and perform
skits to entertain the seniors and get
to hear interesting stories from the
residents. “I look forward to these visits
from these little kids.... what a great time
we have!”, said Mr. Manmohan Kapoor,
Care Homes resident.

Health and Wellness
Our seniors led a robust rendering
of the National Anthem at our Senior
Living complexes at Bhiwadi, Jaipur and
Lavasa. Each location added its own
special touch to the occasion.
Janamashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Teej
and Navratri celebrations become
all the more joyous and blissful when
celebrated with the large Utsav family.
The sound of Bhajans and Aarti, the joy
of singing and dancing with the dhol and
Dandiya, the traditional ceremonies of
Ganapati Sthapana and Dahi Handi…
our festivals are beautiful and sacred
occasions to remember all that is good
and wish for happiness for all.
Indeed, our Maintenance Team strives
to entertain the residents by organizing
get-togethers based on various
activities. Among them was the Bucketball game played at Bhiwadi and Dumb
Charades played at Lavasa.
Our regular camps and seminars on
health and wellness issues are wellappreciated by residents.
At Jaipur, Mrs. Nilima Gupta, the seniormost female resident, hoisted the flag
and children from Kalwar Govt. School
presented a cultural programme and
were later joined by the residents in the
joyous singing and dancing. Residents
Mrs. and Mr. Harish Bajaj gifted
stationery to the children.
At Bhiwadi, RWA President Mr. P. S.
Khola hoisted the flag. Residents and
maintenance team members sung
patriotic and folk songs at the cultural
event held at the Utsav Hall.

Meeting the Residents
Senior management and residents get
together for a meeting every month at
Lavasa to exchange views and improve
communication and bonding with one
another.
Outings and Trips
Maj. Gen. Dahiya hoisted the flag at
Lavasa where Phoolwari kids joined
the residents and Ashiana staff in
celebrating Independence Day. A
carrom competition for the residents
was organized at the Activity Centre.
People travel out specially to see this
rare phenomenon: the Karvy flower that
blooms once in seven years during the
monsoons. Our Lavasa residents just
had to go on a beautiful walk to feast
their eyes on the Karvy flowering shrubs!
The Month-end Party
Crossing lovely streams and passing
stunning verdant areas we finally got
to see the lovely purplish-blue Karvy
flowers.
The month-end party at all our locations
gets new residents introduced to one
another while also celebrating birthdays
and anniversaries.
At Bhiwadi, the July function attended
by 150 residents, also celebrated
the ‘saawan ka mausam’. The ladies
charmed everyone with their traditional
dance to the Rajasthani song, 'Banna
rey baaga mein'. Mrs. Amita Shaw, the
MC for the evening, also presented an
enjoyable play, ‘How husbands are lazy’.
The leaves and stems are used for
thatched roofs after the flowering
season is over. Karvy honey is
considered a rarity and it is said - though
not medically verified - that the juice of its
leaves are a cure for stomach ailments.

an unusual event that the ladies
particularly enjoyed, involved walking with
a book placed on the head – the timetested way of getting the perfect walk!
In addition, there were competitions
held to prepare for Jashn. Residents
diligently honed their skills for a month
by participating in them, to play carrom,
decorate salads and make rangolis,
sing, act and dance!
The Art of Cooking
A picture postcard setting with our Lavasa

At Bhiwadi, VIMHANS conducted a
session on ‘Brain and Mental Health’.
The session included a drawing activity
on Childhood Memories. In the same
month, we also had regular speaker
Dr. Roop Singh on ‘Laughter, the best
medicine’.
Good food preparation is an art and so
is a well-laid table. At our Cooking Shows,
professional cooks as well as residents
share their cooking secrets and we also
hold competitions.
Eye and Dental Check-up Camp
The Head Cook at the Utsav Café,
Bhiwadi, demonstrated the making of
‘chatpati crisp bhindi’. Salad-making
competitions at Bhiwadi and Jaipur
combined the love of food and its display.

The Branch Office, Jaipur, took off to
Mussoorie and Dehradun for their
annual family tour. The 3-day trip was
perfect as it had something for the
whole family: The ropeway ride at
Kempty falls and the waterfall had the
kids excited, while the grown-ups made
sure they spent time at the Mall!
The Construction team of Jaipur chose
Udaipur and Mount Abu for their
annual family holiday. With plenty of
sight-seeing to do at both places, it was
a busy trip of seeing historical places
and lakes. On the last night, the group
decided to enjoy the DJ Night at the
Bhairav Garh Palace in Udaipur.
The Delhi office went to Dalhousie for
their annual family trip. The beauty of
Dalhousie and its neighbour, Khajjiar –
known as mini-Switzerland – brought
out the photographer in every one!
After soaking in the sights of nature and
indulging in local shopping, they took in
the local Dussehra festivities too.

in Action
Good presentation ! I would like to congratulate you and your staff for the
professional and creative presentation of
the Apna Ashiana Issue No.46 of April June 2014.
It certainly captures the heart and
imagination of the site!
Going the Extra Mile
Dilip Mishra is a daily wage
earner at the Ashiana Surbhi
site at Bhiwadi. While on his
way to work one morning,
he saw an accident victim
groaning and writhing in pain
by the roadside, while passersby looked and walked on
without stopping to help. Dilip
wasted not a moment and
took the man to the nearest
hospital. He also informed
the victim’s family members.
The family
members
and others
around were
full of praise
for Dilip.
Regards & Smiling,
Col. Daleep Yadav (Retd.)
I wish to congratulate you on your
pioneering concept of respected
senior citizen living. Yours was the
first organization to start this concept.
Now there are innumerable builders
in this field. But you delivered what you
promised...no tall claims.
My husband and I are proud to be part of
your organization.
Best Wishes
