Oh What a Beautiful...Musical! - Churchlands Senior High School
CHURCHLANDS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL  COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
JUNE 2014
Oh What a Beautiful...Musical!
After the success of Les Miserables last
year, many students (and some staff)
were wondering ‘What next?’
Oklahoma was chosen and once again our intrepid
artistic team endeavoured to take 21st century
teenagers back in time to perform a 1950s musical
about the creation of ‘a brand new state’ in 1906
America…and once again our magnificent cast rose to
the occasion. One audience member was overheard
saying: ‘Well I didn’t think you could get a better
student production than last year’s…but this one is it!’
Musically our performers shone. Thanks to Robyn
Griffin and Paul Sealey, the musicians handled the
challenging orchestration and played brilliantly. Our
soloists gave character and meaning to the lyrics of
some of the best loved songs in musical theatre.
Sharmaine Tan and Caleb Donaldson teased one
another and enchanted the audience as feisty farm girl
Laurey Williams and confident cowboy Curly McLain
and Laura Biemmi brought delightful energy to the role
of Aunt Eller, ensuring that those farmers and cowmen
did stay friends.
The production was further enhanced by Ruth
Sutherland’s imaginative choreography. From the
energetic ‘Kansas City’ cowboys to the storytelling
of the ‘Dream’ and the exuberance of the ‘Farmer and
the Cowman’ we were entertained by the colour and
movement added to the show. And all these elements
were brought together under Angela Padley’s direction.
Mention should also be made of the stunning set
created by Jim Bowman who was also responsible for
sound design and operation and the colourful costumes
created by Wendy Sloot and Mary Brownlie who
donated their time and expertise to the show….and the
assistance of staff members who organise ticket sales,
publicity, props and front of house…as well as the
music parents who provided catering for the shows.
And herein lies the success of the school production…
that so many different members of our school
community combine with the audience to create what
is, for many participants, the highlight of their time
at school.
Caleb Donaldson
with Sharmaine Tan
Abbie Willox, Zac Robinson and Mikhael Poguet created
a comic love triangle and entertained as Ado Annie,
Will Parker, Ali Hakim and Andrew MacLean rose to the
challenge of playing the lonely, disturbed farmhand,
Jud Fry.
Mention should also be made of Liz Dean (Gertie
Cummings) and Thomas Filmer (Andrew Carnes) who
both gave memorable cameo performances. Add an
enthusiastic and tuneful chorus to the mix and you
have a successful show.

From
The Principal
As semester one draws to a close it is
worth reflecting on the successes and
activities of the past few months
Our two current challenges are dealing with
recruitment (up to 40 new staff) and waiting for
information such that we can forward budget under
the new funding model.
This is an unbelievably busy time for staff and
participating students when the pressures of studying
and writing exams falls on students, while setting
and marking exams together with reporting creates
a pressure period for teachers. Through this period,
clerical staff, technical staff and education assistants
provide both students and staff fantastic support.
Recruitment has halted since the Treasurer announced
a recruitment freeze across the public sector until at
least July this year. Though we had advertised and
shortlisted staff for four senior positions, we are unable
to proceed with the process until the freeze has been
lifted. Similarly though Advertisements have been
created for up to 35 teaching positions, they cannot be
listed until the freeze is lifted.
A number of major tours have been completed and
several more are in the planning stages. During April/
May students toured Japan and France as part of our
language exchange program. Drama students visited
the Eastern States and Year 8 AEP students visited Coral
Bay on Camp. Currently planning has commenced for
the biggest tour of all – 200 students and 25 teachers
and chaperones have commenced planning to visit
Europe in July 2015. Our swimmers through the
management of the Barracudas Swim Club are about
to embark on their biannual English Channel Crossing
event, while the inaugural Ancient History tour to
Greece has also commenced its itinerary planning with
significant student interest.
Two major cultural events, The Creating Communities
Art Exhibition and the Musical Production, Oklahoma
have both completed successful seasons this term.
Amongst all of this our Gifted Music Program continued
and hosted Junior and Intermediate Concerts during the
month of May.
As we build towards 2015 with an anticipated increase
of an additional 700 students it is important to keep
our community informed on building and development
progress. The major construction is the new double
story block built on the Churchlands estate side
of the school. Currently the builders are ahead of
timelines with an anticipated completion date at the
end of September and a handover a month later. This
comprises of 16 new classrooms, with additional open
space to complement alternative learning models.
Office upgrades to the science, physical education
and English has also commenced. As too, has the
conversion of the existing Health Centre into an
Administration area for year 7/8 students.
2
To compound this we will not know how many staff
we can employ until the funding details calculator
is released in August this year. Though challenging
and creating significantly shorter timelines I have
confidence in my staff that we will have all positions
filled by the end of the year.
A number of times I have extolled the value of
Churchlands becoming an Independent Public School.
The latest initiative of the School Board is to establish
the Churchlands Foundation. AFL Great Mr Mike
Fitzpatrick, Head Boy in 1970 and a Rhodes Scholar,
has agreed to be the Patron of the Foundation. Mike
visited Perth on June 6, and hosted the launch of the
Foundation with dinner for a number of guests at the
UWA Club Private Dining Room. Stay tuned for more
in depth information on this exciting initiative in our
September newsletter.
Finally I would like to commend you the parents of
our students for the fantastic role you play as parents.
Our teachers see the support you provide and the
values that you bring to your children on display on a
daily basis. It makes it an enjoyable experience for our
staff to deal with such wonderful young people that
you have nurtured and we are privileged to continue
to contribute to that development while they are in
our care.
At the same time I would acknowledge my staff,
teaching and non-teaching who are simply the best.

Year 8
Report
The Year 8s finished their first term of
high school with glamour and glitz at
a Black and White themed disco where
the best dance moves were on display
Everyone seemed to have lots of fun and many
friendships were made stronger. Here is what some
students had to say about the evening –
"It was a great night and we had lots of fun."
Jessica Thiele and Sabrina Paddon.
"Amazing night and we should do it again and I really
enjoyed the sausage sizzle." Aimee Henry.
"It was a great night full of dancing, games and
screaming." Pia Geranio and Tania Vu.
"It was a great night," Abbey Box.
"Great, friendly environment, so glad I went!"
Natalie Alexander.
It has been a busy start to Term 2 and some stress and
anxiety was experienced as students faced more tests
and assessments in preparation for a first semester high
school report. Students should now have settled into a
solid study and revision program, regularly completing
homework and preparation for assessments. Students
have settled well into the High School routine and
we are proud of their lovely manners and strong
work ethic.

fun the
Disco was!

This term our wonderful Year 9s have
faced and conquered NAPLAN, exams,
the school fun run, participated
in the school musical, Oklahoma,
Junior Music Concert, Relay for Life,
had a lightning sports carnival, and
kicked back with a friendly game of
dodgeball or two
I’m sure you’ll agree it has been a busy term. Whilst
we are always pleased when our students achieve
academic excellence – whether that be their personal
best or at an elite level, we are also delighted to
celebrate cultural and sporting achievements. Three
students stand out for special mention with regard
to their recent sporting prowess. Georgia Thomas
came 2nd in the National Gymnastic Competition
held in May, while Matthew and Nicholas Greed have
kayaked above their age division level to break the
record at under 18 level.

On Sunday the 11th of March, Matthew and
Nicholas Greed took part in the Double Barkers
race at Ascot Kayaking club. They were going
for the Under 14 doubles record for 24 kms and
were the only juniors competing with older and
faster competitors. The boys set a new Under 14
doubles record in a time of 2 hours and 7 minutes
and beat the Under 18 record by two minutes!
A great achievement, especially considering the
under 18s record was set by Robin Jeffery (2012
London Olympic competitor for slalom) and
Josh Kippin (who recently came back from the
World Marathons).

In February, Nicholas and Matthews competed
in the State Sprints, where they won all of their
double races by seconds and came second and
third in their single races. Matthew won 7 (4 gold
and 3 silver) medals and Nicholas won 5 (3 gold,
a silver and a bronze). They also competed in the
State Marathon Championships where they took
another gold in K2, and Matthew got a silver
medal, missing out on gold by only 10 seconds.
The boys are aiming for the nationals next year
and hope to try out for the Olympic Hopes team
and the World Marathon teams for K2.
We are proud to say both boys are excellent

Year 10
Report
The world of Year 10 has been
submerged in a haze of exams and
subject selection this term
Deciding on what you want to be when you grow up is a
big feat when you are just fifteen! But we still have had
our moments of having fun and being kids. Here is but just
a sprinkling of what we have been up to so far…
Oklahoma! We are ‘uber’ proud of our Year 10 cast,
orchestra and crew that were a part of the senior school
production of Oklahoma. The performance was a real
back-slapping rip snorter! The river cruise may have to
be a steam-paddle boat with a ‘hoe-down’ theme this
year, just to see those happy, shiny faces again mid
dance routine.
To reiterate our collective dance prowess – our dance
students brightly sparkled in the light of a full moon on
a Black Friday in the combined schools dance concert
‘Nexus’ at Octagon Theatre at UWA. Their talents in
Contemporary, Jazz and Hip Hop cannot be denied!
And jet-setting all over the world is no feat for our year
group. School trips to France and Japan have become
another feather in the cap of our intrepid explorers. And
it seems that some of them want to further conquer the
world through getting involved in World Challenge 2015
– we are thrilled the destination is India!
While we may be spiraling our way into upper school in
a cloud of smoke, as you can see by the happy snaps, we
are still occasionally stopping to smell the roses while we
can in Year 10!

and Ben Fahrner joined a select group of ten CSHS
students to attend the Halogen Foundation Expo at
the Perth Convention Centre. The full day program
included presentations by guest speakers, including
ex-coach of West Coast Eagles John Worsfold, explorer
Patrick Hollingworth, Commissioner Wayne Gregson
as well as several other tertiary educators and
organisation representatives. The objective of the day
was to provide information on courses, programmes
and co-curricular activities to help students become
future leaders.

This is what Amelia and Christine had to say about
the Expo:
“They gave us truthful guidance, encouragement, and
influence over our own future.
“They asked us to think about and record our thoughts
on how we would make the world different and
captured them on film. The results were a powerful
picture of what is of concern to this generation, and an
encouraging vision of our desire to alter our future.
It was entertaining yet informative and inspirational
with a load of handy hints on how to be a leader.”

Barnard, Samson Ting and Christine Liau
Student Leadership Breakfast
On Tuesday 10 June, seven of our students accepted
an invitation to participate in a Student Leadership
Breakfast at the Pan Pacific Hotel with key speaker, Mt
Everest climber, Patrick Hollingworth. The students
heard Patrick’s inspirational story and key messages
regarding short and long-term goal setting, and
persevering to attain a goal. Not only did our students
enjoy an excellent breakfast, they also came away
with some strategies to further develop interpersonal
and leadership skills. Here is what some of the
students had to say about the event:
“Patrick was an inspirational, heart-stopping person
and speaker who taught me that if you believe enough
in yourself you can succeed in anything in the world.
Even the impossible can become a reality.”
Bailey Thomas.
“Listening to Patrick Hollingworth’s story was truly
inspirational. It just goes to show that if you put your
mind to something, you can achieve anything.”
Sophie Ward
“I really enjoyed the breakfast and found Patrick’s
speech extremely inspiring. It helped me realise I
shouldn’t limit myself, or my goals, I just need to keep
persevering.” James Oliver
“The talk taught me that anything is possible if you set
your mind to it.” Tiffany Hardingham
“Going to the breakfast was an amazing experience.
Seeing how much effort Patrick Hollingworth put into
all his mountain climbing to finally reaching his goal
of climbing Mount Everest really goes to show that if
you keep trying you can succeed.” Melanee
“I thought the talk on Mount Everest was a really
rewarding experience. It showed us that if there are
bumps in the road you can still achieve your dreams. It
was also really interesting to see how much goes into
climbing a mountain of any size. It was really amazing
listening to Patrick because I later found out he lived
in the same area as me and went to my old primary
school too! Although I don’t think mountain climbing
is something I’d want to do, it was definitely an eye
opener to see someone who had the same beginnings
as me achieve something so great.” Amy
It was a very worthwhile morning and an excellent
way to start the day. Special thanks to attending
staff Dave Tomlin and Clare Slodecki for making it
all possible.

The Fun Run was held in stunning
conditions on Friday 2nd May
All Year 8, 9 and 10 students were keen to run and get
out and be active. Once again our charity is Princess
Margaret Hospital, and we hope to raise another $4500
for them like we did last year.
The start of the Fun Run is always a highlight of
my year. 800 wild eyed teenagers, chomping at the
bit, pawing the ground, cheering, pushing, surging
and screaming.
The most nervous runner of the day was our bunny –
Mr Matthews. He was jiggling about and running on
the spot well before the start.
With a sixty second head start and a screaming horde
behind him, Mr Matthews was only overtaken by the
hard running pre-race favourites Lloyd Hopkins and
Angus Franklin (Year 10). With a Caramello to any
student who beat Mr Matthews home, he then became
teacher of the year by hiding near the tennis courts and
letting fifty kids pass him. Nice.

have been minor changes to the curriculum to align it
with national directions and the eligibility forms have
been redesigned.
The greatest change is for students of French, where a

WORKPLACE LEARNING
Seventy five students in Year 11 and 12 involved in the
Workplace Learning program have just completed their
first round of placements for the year. This semester I
had the pleasure of visiting forty students and meeting
the employers that have so willingly offered their
time, expertise and support to the WL student, other
students were visited by the staff of Western Workplace
Learning. For some students this experience was the
first time that they had participated in the workforce.
Thanks must be given to the team at Western Workplace
Learning (in particular Dale Mahoney) who made the
placements for the students and visited some of them
in the workplace. I must also thank the parents of our
students for supporting them during this time. Of course
the biggest thank you needs to be given to the wonderful
group of employers that support our Workplace Learning
Program by volunteering their time and skills to work with
our students. Without them the program could not run.
Special thank you to our sponsors...

Japanese
Tour 2014
The Japan Tour this year was an
absolute blast
The students from the ‘get go’ ran amok in the cities
of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Nishi Akashi!
Highlights included a crystal clear day to see the
sights of Mt Fuji, temple sight seeing in Kyoto and
being chased by deranged deer in Nara Park. We were
also confronted with challenges such as being slightly
lost, lugging our cumbersome baggage through peak
hour in the Tokyo underground attempting to catch
a frightfully punctual shinkansen (bullet train) to a
very important date! Exhilarating!
When not taking in the sights of Japanese cities
we were immersed in school and home life at our
host school Akashi Nishi. This lead to the delightful
discovery of how dedicated the Japanese are to
hospitality. We were treated to lessons in calligraphy,
a Japanese tea ceremony, choral with no English
whatsoever, a rip-snorting game of scissor-paper-rock
with lively class of six-year olds and a particularly
special session of learning how to deliver ‘rakugo’
(basically a traditional-style Japanese stand-up
routine). Home life involved sampling delectable
Japanese cuisine, participating in the family bath
routine and being taken to a variety of day trips on
the weekend.
Any student who is given the opportunity to
experience the excitement of the Japan Tour should
not hesitate to sign up! You will not regret it!

RSL recognises Churchlands efforts
The Churchlands marching band was formed
at the end of 2003, marching for the first time
in the 2004 Anzac Day Parade. Since then the
band has participated in nine Perth Anzac Day
commemorations, missing only 2009 when they
were on tour in North America and 2012 when many
of these students participated in the official Dawn
Service at the Australian National Memorial at
Villers‑Bretonneux, France.
The Marching band has been such a success that this
year our students enthusiastically formed a second
marching ensemble.
My thanks to the ensemble directors Caron Walker,
Nicole Turner, Robyn Griffin and Jacqui Edwick for
making sure our students look and sound their best.
Glenn Robinson
Director of Music
The students’ involvement in these commemorative
events helps to give them a greater insight into the
sacrifices of our forefathers and allows them an
opportunity to connect with historical events on
a personal level.
To acknowledge the efforts and commitment of the
Churchlands staff and students in supporting veterans,
the RSLWA has this year contributed to the purchase of
smart new jackets for both the Anzac Parade and the
State Remembrance Day services. The President of the
WA RSL, the Hon. Graham
Edwards AO, recently
visited the students here
at school for their first
official wearing of the
jackets and to thank the
students personally for
their support.

For Life
We love “Relay for Life”
The kids love it, the staff love it and the
community love it. The Churchlands Staff and
Student teams raised over $22,000 in 2014 to
come in second for Top Schools Fundraising.
We had almost 200 students and twenty five
staff who spent the twenty four hours in glorious
sunshine and freezing darkness, walking laps of
the track to remind us of the battle that a cancer
sufferer faces.
In my time at Churchlands, I am still amazed
at the generous nature of the wonderful
human beings that are our students.
They were impressive beyond words.
I can only hope that the “Relay” continues to be
a mainstay of the community service that our
students throw themselves into and we continue
to field a team of superstars.
Thanks to all of the staff who attended, and the
parents who helped. You know who you are.
Thank you.

Flynn Dormer was selected to be a part

program that was held in the second
week of term one holidays. I thought it
is better he writes something than I do
A few weeks ago I was honoured to be part of the Sir
Charles Court Young Leaders Program, a camp that
aligns with Curtin University’s new Student Leadership
Development Strategy. The memorable four-day
camp was an excellent opportunity to work with and
learn from twenty-nine other selected students from
across WA, as well as our six peer tutors consisting of
previous attendants and other members from the Curtin
Leadership Centre.
Looking back, I have never gained this much insight
into myself and others in such a short period of time.
For this truly amazing opportunity I would like to thank
Mrs Sambhara and Mr O’Brien for recommending me
and making this all possible..

This camp concentrates on leadership qualities, selfawareness, goal setting, teamwork, problem solving
and developing awareness of global and local issues
and how these impact society. Each day comprised
of new foci and amusing activities and games that
corresponded with these subjects. These ranged from
teamwork-based scenarios at a high-ropes course,
to games that simulate real-world industries and to
creating our own hypothetical community events to
tackle local issues. Working together with the other
members of the camp we were all able to take the
most out of every activity and even a few games of
Ultimate Ninja.
Following the three and a half days at Wesley College’s
boarding house, we left for Curtin University where
we listened to several guest speakers regarding such
topics as career choices
and scholarships. We were
honoured to have former
Premier Richard Court speak
at our graduation ceremony,
representing the court family
in honour of his father Sir
Charles Court, another
former Premier of whom the
program was named after.
However, former Australia
women’s basketball player

took the spotlight with a
truly inspirational speech of
resilience and determination.

First Aid Officer
At the beginning of Term 2, I
commenced work at Churchlands

Officer
I have twenty four years’ experience in nursing and
have three children myself, two here at Churchlands.
Everyone has been extremely welcoming and I already
feel very much a part of the team. The old Medical
Centre is currently being renovated so I am situated in
Student Services. In this location, I can see first hand the
day to day running of the school, meet and work with
all the Year Coordinators, Student Services team and
most importantly meet the children who are fantastic,
a pleasure to be with.
There is no longer a nurse based at the school so when
accidents happen and people feel unwell, they come
to see me! To keep a healthy environment at school, I
ask that you do not send your child to school if they
are sick and make sure all your telephone numbers are
up to date so you can be reached if your child needs to
be sent home whilst unwell. If I am unable to contact
you, I may need to call an ambulance (if required)
which can be very costly to you ($800-$900) without
insurance.
I find Churchlands to be a really positive environment
to work in and hope you will contact me if your child
has any specific medical needs.
Kind regards
Adele Mercier, First Aid Officer.

I am really impressed with the
numbers volunteering for events, both
in school and out in the community
More often than not, I have a “waiting list” of students
hoping that someone will have to drop out!
It is great to have students ready to step in at the
last minute.
Since the last newsletter, the big focus has been on
Relay for Life, but there have also been numerous
other events where students have volunteered
their time. Indeed, on the same weekend as Relay,
twelve other students attended the Step Up for MS
Central Park Stair Climb, where they were placed
on the various landings of the tower to provide
encouragement and support to the climbers.
Volunteers have also provided assistance and
marshalling at the Stirling Station starting precinct
of the Asthma Foundation’s Freeway Bike Hike, have
poured and served hundreds of cups of water to
finishers of the HBF Run For A Reason, are coaching
netball before or after school at Woodlands Primary
School and are training the cross country runners at
Yuluma Primary School. Others have provided front of
house or backstage support for the school production,
Oklahoma”, have handed out canapés and washed
dishes at the opening of the Art Exhibition, provided
assistance to parents on the Parent Report Day as
well as taking hot drinks for staff, supervised the
children’s play area or assisted with ticketing at the
Garden Festival in Perry Lakes and four of our Year 11
students attended the Global Leadership Conference
organised and run by World Vision. Once again, after
a four year break, students assisted with marshalling
at the Gwelup Primary School Fun Run on the WA Day
holiday. At the time of writing others are assisting at
the Every Woman Expo being held in the city over a
three day period.

World
Challenge 2015
We are off and running again, with
the students about to select their
teams for next year’s expedition
to Himalayan India (Uttarakand)
and Rajasthan
Clearly, word must have got out that World
Challenge is a fantastic experience (despite the lost
passports, visa issues and flight delays…) as we
had a huge attendance at our Parent Presentation
Evening which was held in Week 3 Term 2. Several
of last year’s Year 12 “challengers” spoke glowingly
of their experiences and showed a video clip that
they had filmed themselves – they all wish that they
could come with us again and are planning to do a
volunteering trip in one of their university holidays!
The presentation by Doug O’Halloran of World
Challenge was also inspiring and we were
inundated with expression of interest forms
in the following days. The calibre of the
applicants was exceptional, so the decision was
made to take four teams, which is fantastic!
Would
you like to
experience
this...
In the coming weeks the students will have
a Launch Meeting with Doug to learn more
about how World Challenge works and about the
region of India we will be travelling to. This will
enable them to choose the places they want to visit
and how challenging they want their treks to be. In
the meantime, the priority will be to make long term
plans to be fit enough to hike at altitude (carrying 15 –
18 kilos) and also to save the money they need to pay
their share of the cost which they have negotiated
with their parents.
We don’t have any pictures yet of our current group,
but the following reminders of our last two World
Challenge Expeditions in 2011 and 2013, will give you
an idea of the amazing time we have ahead of us
next year!

In fantastic running weather our kids did their best over
the 3, 4 and 6 kilometre courses. Each race was packed
with up to 200 competitors, galloping at the start and
staggering at the end.
All of the Churchlands students ran at their hardest and
put in the effort for their school. We had some fantastic
results as individuals and as year group teams. Our
best results were as follows – Sarah Hynes 8th, Briana
Dusting 11th, Joe Shore 15th, Kal Azmanov 15th and
Mitch Alco 17th in there various age groups.
In the overall year categories Churchlands won

Year 9 Design and Fashion
Year 10 Teenage Fashion
This semester in Design and Fashion we learnt a few
techniques of how to decorate fabrics. First we did
some tie-dye on natural fabric, then we did some
batik which is when you put wax on fabric and dye it
different colours so it looks nice.
This semester, the Year 10 sewing students have
sewn black wrap around skirts and have designed a
decoration to sew onto it.
One of our favourite techniques was applique which
meant we could put any design we liked using different
pieces of fabric. Once we learnt these techniques, we
designed our bags using images like hearts, fruit,
icecream, flowers or even characters like Olaf from
the movie Frozen, and the Mad Hatter from Alice in
Wonderland. Once we completed our bags we started
our fancy boxer shorts. Watch this space!
Daryl Ciseaux and Anastasia Sinclair
The unique designs (applique, embroidery, buttons)
have been sewn onto the skirts to decorate them and
create something individual that couldn’t be bought
at the shops. Now almost all of the students have
completed their skirts and are moving onto making
pyjama pants. The students have chosen the colours
and patterns for their pyjama pants and are now
sewing and decorating them with original designs
they have created.

We used materials such as rubbish bags, paint

Once finished we displayed our creations with a

to suit our chosen theme. This was definitely a fun

Hospitality Year 12
Hospitality has been a very rewarding course
so far, not just because we get to eat extra
food most days of the week. We have learnt
various cuts of vegetables (apparently there
are more than one!), how to cook eggs in
different ways, how to fillet a fish and how
to make different pastries. We have made
pasta and rice dishes, even a quinoa salad,
so we now know what quinoa is and how
to pronounce it! Our barista course was fun
because it not only gave us delicious cups
of coffee, but we also learnt how to operate
the coffee machine and unfortunately how to
clean it too, which will help us with part time
work in the future.
A few highlights of the course have been
having the guest chef come in and make pork
dumplings with us, making apple pie, arancini
balls and cooking roast beef. We have all
thoroughly enjoyed working together in our
small groups; hospitality is a great course
for learning practical skills about food
preparation and teamwork, I would highly
recommend it.

ANZAC Day
Commemorative Parade
On Friday 25 April Wind Orchestra 2 assembled
amidst the returned service men and women
on St. Georges Terrace for their inaugural
performance as a marching band
Flag waving crowds lined the route as we marched and it was
a fantastic experience both playing and marching in the parade.
Despite a few issues (typically encountered when following horses),
we were ready for anything after Mr Robinson’s rigorous marching
training sessions. Anzac Day means a lot to so many people and I
know we all felt honoured to have been given the opportunity to
support the memory of the ANZACs on this special day.

As a member of Wind Orchestra 1,
marching through the streets of
Perth representing Churchlands
Senior High School is a distinguished
honour. Many of the members of
Wind Orchestra 1 were present at the
Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux in
France in 2012 and this day held even
more significance for them.
Marching alongside the Veterans
from all countries gave everyone a
huge sense of pride. Running up the
steep hill before our second march
took it out of us but we pushed
through. The countless hours of
rehearsals on a Saturday morning
paid off with the band looking highly
respectable amongst the Veterans to
whom this day meant so much.

Conference
The Year 10 Academic Extension
Program English class had the
opportunity to attend the Gifted
and Talented conference at St Hilda's
in May
The focus during the conference was on topics that
could be approached from many different disciplines.
This allowed students to begin making connections
between different areas of study and meeting the needs
of highly able learners.
This conference was presented by Julie Arliss , a
lecturer at King’s college, participants benefited from
her ranging experience helping young people realise
their potential.
This is what one of the student had to say about
the conference.
On Monday of week 2, gifted and talented English
students in Year 10, including myself, were given
the unique opportunity to take a break from the
classroom. Instead, we joined G+T students from
over ten other schools to take part in a stimulating
conference, engaging with a wide range of topics
aimed at provoking thought beyond the constraints
of the curriculum.
International lecturer Julie Arliss kicked off the
conference in exploring the philosophical difficulties of
achieving agreement about Justice, also highlighting
the complexity of it all with implications for other
areas of human experience, including Beauty, Truth,
Mathematics and Art. Julie continued in examining and
exploring the most significant theories of the Universe's
Origins, giving us a deep insight into one of the most
seminal discussions among scholars for generations.
Our second lecturer Jeffrey Hodges explored the
challenges with and methods of developing emotional
intelligence. 'EQ' being the ability to identify positive
ways to empathise and communicate with others, and
achieve greater success and fulfilment.
The conference concluded with "The Big Debate," in
which Julie and Jeffrey took opposing sides on the issue
of adopting nuclear power, encouraging students to
contribute and vote. The purpose was to examine the
practical implications of adopting the precautionary
principle which suggests 'that if technological
development has a suspected risk of causing harm to
the public or the environment, it should not progress
until it’s proved safe.'
All in all, the conference was a rare opportunity to be
exposed to some of the deeper questions that have been
posed, and exploring them with distinguished speakers.

‘Student Bytes’
Makes it’s mark
The ‘Churchlands News Team’ is a
group of dedicated students committed
to improving their writing through
reporting on what’s happening in the
school from students’ point of view
‘Student Bytes’ is part of the ‘Churchlands Bytes’
publication, which is emailed every fortnight to all
parents and students.
What have you learnt about writing articles?
“The writing style expected of us news team writers is
very professional and reporter like.
“I have learnt that articles must be concise, original
and attention grabbing.
(Nikki Starlife, Year 10).
“I have learnt that you need to look at a story from
opposing of views, and preparing for a deadline
(Ashleigh Pauls, Year 9).”
Each fortnight a number of students are allocated
‘stories’ from events that have been happening around
the school. It’s then up to the students to interview,
research and write the article.
What would your advice be to any student who is
thinking about joining the team?
“JUST DO IT. We have lollies and Mms every second
week, and we are a cute, awkward community.” (Paige
Thacker, Year 11)
Ms Chapman co-ordinates the ‘news team’ and has also
worked as a Journalist, we asked her why It’s important
for students to be given this opportunity;
“Come! It's a really good experience to have as it helps
you with your writing (and there are lollies too!)”
(Isabel Weng, Year 9)
“Writing is such an important skill to have in life, and
can be an asset in any profession. In particular, it gives
students who are interested in a career in journalism
first- hand experience. The fact they are published each
fortnight as part of “Chuchlands Bytes’ is a once in a
lifetime experience and will give them the edge in the
future. Another important feature of ‘Student Bytes’ is
that it represents the voice of the students!”
SO...
If this sounds like something you would like to be a
part of, we welcome new members. Just email Ms
Chapman jchapman@churchlands.wa.edu.au or knock
on the English office to speak with her directly.
The ‘news team’ has reported on a range of events and
topics since the beginning of the year including Anzac
Day, The Year 8 camp, Going from a Green Shirt to
White, Oklahoma and even Study Tips, just to name
a few!
We would also love to listen to any suggestions you
may have for articles to put in ‘Student Bytes’. We have
put a suggestion box in the library so all you need to do
is write your idea down and leave it in the box.

“A CUTE AWKWARD
COMMUNITY”
Here is what some of the student’s
said about being a part of the
news team:
Why did you decide to be a part of
the news team?
“Because I have always had
a passion for writing, and I
thought it would be an interesting
experience. It also gets me
community service hours which is
a bonus (Paige Thacker, Year. 11).
I decided to be part of the news
team because I enjoy writing and
wanted to know what it would
feel like to be a journalist (Isabel
Weng, Year 9).

lunchtimes during Term 2
On May 5th, Heer, Ben, Lucinda and I attended the
World Vision, Global Leaders Convention Day 2014. The
focus of the day was to inspire and empower Year 10-12
students to become a voice for global justice.
We were one of the many schools there and were
amongst 1000 or so other students. We spent the
day listening to World Vision Leaders and Youth
Ambassadors, watching videos, playing games and
sharing ideas about how best we could promote the 40
Hour Famine within schools. We had the opportunity to
work in teams with students from other schools as we
gained a deeper understanding of the issues associated
with global hunger and poverty.
Nine teams entered the tournament and all games so
far, have been played competitively and in great spirit.
Teams were required to wear a uniform and there were
some excellent kits put together by the teams.
As this article goes to press, the Group Section has been
completed. The four best teams will enter the final
rounds and continue their quest to be crowned Year 11
Lunchtime Basketball Champions when they return
from exams.
Our next challenge is to encourage as many
Churchlands students as possible to participate in
the 40Hr Famine. We hope that many students will
be willing to join us for raising money for such a
terrific cause!

2014 French
Tour
In April 2014, twenty seven Year 10
students and one Year 11 student
went to France accompanied by
four teachers
They experienced the French culture in two different
cities: Belfort and Paris.
The group first stopped in Belfort, a beautiful city in
the north-east of France. This small town challenged
students to meet new friends, their correspondents,
and to communicate with them and their family
in French. Being immersed daily in French in
Belfort was a great bonus as students could not
believe how much their listening skills and spoken
French improved.
This city had a lot to offer. Not only did they meet
beautiful people but they could also discover Belfort’s
history with its fortification and also “Le Lion de
Belfort”. Host families were wonderful and welcomed
the group with rich and delicious food, such as cheese,
potatoes and of course bread. The three, four, fivecourse (are there more coming?) meals were a very
good surprise for French students and a welcomed
change at the school canteen. A starter, a main meal
and a dessert sure does sound more exciting than
our sandwich in Australia. Some of us even tried the
classics, such as snails or frogs legs.
Great photos of France
With the group, we visited a range of beautiful places,
such as the waterfalls of the Saut-du-Doubs, the city
of Colmar and the castle of the Haut-Koënigsbourg.
From the 18th of April, French students were on
holiday! They had the opportunity to spend more
time with their host families who took them to do a
range of activities, such as going to “EuropaPark”,
an amazing theme park in Germany, and visiting
Strasbourg, a beautiful city in the north-east of France
which is home to the European parliament. Some of
them discovered the snow and also went skiing.
Our students were delighted by the hospitality of
the French families, the incredible amount of food
that was given to them every day and the wonderful
places they got to see. Despite some very cold
weather, some of our boys soldiered on and refused
to wear anything but shorts (something to do with
being “Australian”). The cold did not stop students from
enjoying every moment they had in this beautiful city.

Tour
On the 24th of April, we left Belfort for Paris in the TGV, a high-speed train,
with a heavy heart, leaving our very good friends and many beautiful
places behind us.
Great photos
of France
We arrived in Paris, unpacked and went straight to see the well-known
landmark: the Eiffel Tower. Students were excited and impressed by the
height of the monument. Aside from the Eiffel Tower, we saw Versailles,
the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Arch of La Défense, la cite des Sciences,
l’arc de Triomphe, Montmartre and le Sacré Coeur. We also had the amazing
opportunity to go for a cruise by night on
the Seine River to see the amazing city
of Paris lit up. We spent our last day at
Disneyland Paris where students had a fun
time. We said goodbye to France on the
30th of April, our minds full of amazing
memories, our food envies satisfied and our
French language improved.
We now look forward to hosting the French
students who will be coming in October.

Body Boarding Competion
The swell had not been kind over the
week leading up to the competition;
it had peaked at 1m and there was a
feeling that perhaps this tournament
would not go ahead
A quick thinking PE Department changed the location
to Trigg Beach in the hope of catching some bigger
surf on the day. Fortunately, the swell picked up and
the competition was set to be a ripper. The day was
split across heats with the girls and boys competing in
separate competitions.
Some students were keen to show off their skills,
while others were just content with getting out past
the breaker. There was tough competition in the boys
groups with Brandon Murphy, Wil Douglas and Yujiro
Kobayashi taking out top honours. Emma Davies
led the girls groups from the start, with a thrilling
display of tricks and raw courage to take out top place.
Tash Brania and Natasha Willoughby gain special
mention for posting minor rankings due to catching
the longest wave up the beach. A great day was had
by all. Many thanks to the Year 11s for making it an
awesome competition!

School Sport WA - High Schools Cup
The Champion Schools competition held on Friday 9 May was a
day carnival for government and non-government schools in the
Northern Districts. Churchlands entered five teams, two each in
the Lower (Year 8) and Middle (Year 9 and 10) Division and one in
the Open (Year 11 and 12) Division. All our teams played consistent
Netball against schools of a very high calibre.
The two top schools from each zone progress to Interzone finals
played either home or away. Although results are yet to be
confirmed, Churchlands should have at least three out of five
teams progressing.
Congratulations to all girls who represented themselves and
Churchlands SHS in the High Schools Cup at such a high level and
good luck to those teams in the next round.
Thank you to our team managers/umpires who volunteered their
time to assist at the carnival.

Chinese Speaking Competition
The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for WA
Secondary School Students was held in the Confucius Institute at
UWA on 10th May 2014.
The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition is an annual
international Chinese Mandarin speaking and performance
competition. The competition is organised by the Office of the
Chinese Language Council International Hanban, Beijing.
The competition had three segments: a written test on the cultural
and geographical knowledge of China (in Chinese); a speaking
component (3 minutes); and a cultural performance.
Two Churchlands students took part in the competition and both
of them won. Yating Wang (10 –B1) won 2nd prize in the Chinese
background category. Suzie Yang (11-S2) won third prize in the NonChinese background category.
Suzie and three other WA students received $600 worth of travel
and accommodation subsidies to participate in the Australia
“Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition Finals in Adelaide
on the 19-20 June.
The winners of the Adelaide competition will be invited to compete
in the international finals in China in 2014.

China study tour with the Confucius Institute,
2014
Four Churchlands students took part in the twelve
days China study tour with the Confucius Institute in
April. They are Annie Roper (10-S4); Amanda Tan (10T2), Yating Wang (10-B1) and Nicholas Ho (9-S4). All
accommodation, meals and the excursions in China are
paid by the Confucius Institute.
Annie wrote about the tour: “The culture activities were
very entertaining; they ranged from watching traditional
Chinese movies to learning martial arts and singing
classic Chinese songs. The excursions were also fun; we
went to attractions such as the Tea museum, Wuzhen
Town, a local high school, all different types of markets
and my personal favourite, Song Dynasty Town. All of
these attractions had an amazing history dating back to
more than 5000 years ago –much more than Australia’s
200 years! This was definitely one of the most rewarding
experiences I ever could have asked for – we all came
back with not only a great knowledge of Chinese culture
and language but we had all gained valuable travelling
experience and made great friendships along the way.

Photography
Film photography contains skills that are difficult to master.
It takes time, perseverance and commitment to learn what it takes to produce a successful photograph. Once
mastered, the appreciation of the art form will stay with students forever.
The works you see here are often 4 - 5 weeks in the making. Students begin to understand the importance of light
and composition, when using an SLR film camera. Following this is the precise process of developing negatives. The
magic begins in the darkroom where students employ skills such as the use of filters and dodging and burning to
produce high end images.
To complete the artistic
process students mount their
photographs, display them in
the Visual Arts Gallery and have
the satisfaction of seeing their
work exhibited. Congratulations
to the students who have
successfully displayed their
works this semester.

Science
What’s happening in Lower School
Science?
Year 8
Over the last five to six weeks the Year 8s have been
studying Earth and Space Sciences. Early in the topic
they learnt how to distinguish between a rock and
a mineral and how to distinguish between different
minerals using the four properties of lustre, streak,
hardness and cleavage. Then the classes were taught
about the three different types of rocks – igneous,
metamorphic and sedimentary.
One of the ways we like to teach the students about
sedimentary rocks is to get them to make their own
simulated sedimentary rocks. The before photographs
show the students preparing their samples. Then
after leaving the samples to dry for several days the
after photos show the finished products.
