IYHA - A different kind of education Models of Israel
IYHA - A different kind of education Models of Israel Three-dimensional relief models of Israel have been set up at a number of youth hostels around the country, offering a hands-on educational activity intended to encourage participants to look at the form of Israel’s landscape and learn about its geographic, physical, settlement and other characteristics. Alongside the models are audio guides providing information in Hebrew and English about the country’s structure and about the particular area of the tour. “An encounter with Eretz Yisrael” at the Ein Gedi, Arad, Maayan Harod, Shlomi and Tel Hai youth hostels The model is a three-dimensional relief of Israel on a scale of 1:50,000, 8.5 m long, and 3 m wide at its widest point. “The Water Divide” at Karei Deshe youth hostel A 6 m long aluminum model of Israel, illustrating the topographic structure of the country and serving as the basis for activities relating to water in Israel. Instruction and activity kits: Guides coming to the hostels are offered instruction and activity kits, making use of the model and relating to archeology, ecology, settlement, and quality of the environment. An instruction kit for each area can be downloaded from the IYHA website: www.iyha.org.il The activities kit is available from the reception desk, free of charge, and is returned at the end of the activity. Israel model – suggested activity: The Water Divide – suggested activity: Locating places in Israel Rainfall in Israel Participants locate places in Israel, and mark them on the model with potsherds. The participants pour water over the model and watch the way it flows, to demonstrate precipitation in different regions of the country and the way the water flows into the rivers, the reservoirs, the groundwater, and so on. Quiz Participants form teams to answer questions for which they need to study the model, earning points for the quality and speed of their answer. Participants identify the route of the national carrier on the model, and discover the challenge of transporting a large quantity of water across the complex topography. The guide demonstrates the components of the different solutions for delivery of the water. www.bigraphics.co.il Explanations about Israel and the region in which the model is situated, to supplement the information acquired in the activity.
