First Ladies’ Fundraiser
Ladies Locke Room Rehab Kickoff
The First Ladies’ Club of the Detroit Yacht Club will be sponsoring a fundraising activity in conjunction with Venetian events. In keeping with the Pirate
theme for Venetian night, two different "Pirate" goodie bags will be available
offering 2 items per bag such as a pirate bandana and a wrist band or an eye
patch and tattoo. A cloth pirate flag will also be available. All three of these
items will be offered for a minimum donation of $10 each. Proceeds will go
towards improvements in the Ladies Locker Room such as replacement of the
four fiberglass shower stalls near the sauna. The First Ladies
have already raised $2,700 towards this project.
The First Ladies and their partners would really appreciate
your support for this endeavor. The restoration of the Ladies
Locker Room is long overdue and with this effort will be a
kickoff to some nice improvements in the future for that area
of the Club. The First Ladies thank you very much for your
support.

Fellow DYC Members,
July has been a banner month here at the Historic DYC. Thanks to our Gold Cup Fundraising
Committee - Alan Whitman, Mary Rachwal, Dan Nowicki, and James Gierlach, the Gold Cup Races
were held. The bottom line for the DYC members was a memorable Race Weekend, seven new members, 23 in the last month (thank you, Jack), $57,000 in wristband sales and over 6-figure profit to the
bottom line.
Venetian Week is fast approaching. First Lady Candis and her Entertaining Committee have planned
a spectacular week of events. Please see the back page of the July MainSheet for the complete agenda. This is one of the most popular events of the year, so come down and enjoy your Club.
The Dock Breakfast and Fleet Review will be held Sunday, August 7th. Come down to your Club your Commodores and Directors will be serving you breakfast, then show off your boat and salute your
Commodores, Directors and Flag Officers.
Andy Ciupak, our Fleet Captain has two great Rendezvous planned before Frost Bite.
1) Maumee Bay - great hotel, good harbor, golf, pools, bike and walking trails, tennis, private lake and
a water slide. 2) Sarnia Bay with casinos, pool, and a night at the race track with the DYC presenting
the 8th race and the DYC members presenting a blanket to the winning horse with Detroit Yacht Club
imprint and logo, and much more.
The MainSheet directory letter from the Commodore sited all the accomplishments of the membership this year. I also listed my 3 incomplete goals for my Commodore year. 1) Completion of phase 1 of the east end picnic area. To date I have 7 picnic tables, 1 gas grill, 2
charcoal grills and a fire pit that I donated this weekend. I have $550 in the east end picnic fund, I need $400 more to complete phase1
with 3 steel vinyl coated in-ground benches. This area is for every DYC member. Please support this effort. 2) Signage for the Historic
DYC. My goal is to put the Detroit Yacht Club signature back on the Clubhouse, hopefully on both the river side and toward Belle Isle.
Samuel Cerrito has agreed to assist through his contacts. If you would like to participate in the design, bids or fundraising, please contact
me. First Lady Candis and I have committed $1,000 in matching funds
for this goal. 3) Completion of the Bitter End renovation with air conditioning to make this room functional for swim team, social members
and every DYC members' parties. This project also includes 3 French doors and a patio. Please contact Director Artil Leo if you would
like to assist in this endeavor.

THE DYC FOUNDATION

The pace of development of the DYC Foundation (DYCF) is accelerating even while we enjoy a fantastic summer of fun at the Detroit
Yacht Club. As we complete our application to the IRS for approval as a non-profit independent foundation, our Advisory Board members, Trustees, DYC liaisons and other member volunteers are working actively to establish the DYCF's policies and strategies.
There is much work to be done to empower the Foundation to be an important vehicle for raising capital needed to preserve and improve
the beauty and functionality of our historic clubhouse. When approved by the IRS, the Foundation will be able to accept donations of
cash and property that will be tax-deductible, whether given annually, pledged over a longer term, or included in estate plans. Tax-advantaged fund raising events will be held, grants from foundations will be sought, and Federal and State programs and tax credits will be
explored.
Four committees have been formed and are now meeting to address key issues connected with how the DYCF will operate. The primary purpose of each committee is shown below:

FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOM

How can an issue that on one hand is problematic be on the other hand beneficial? We
have received some comments relative to high attendance levels at recent Club events. In
response we've reviewed guest policy and regulation procedures, addressed some concerns
and written some letters. We're also examining the traditional way we've managed our business. For instance, we've been leveraging the banquet, bar and grill restaurant business
when it comes to purchasing but they're basically run as two different businesses, upstairs
and downstairs. So when we set the Father's Day Brunch upstairs for 200 patrons then served
well over 400, plus absorbed additional over flow downstairs in the grill restaurant and patio,
synergistic improvement opportunities had to be explored. When you consider how many
businesses can only wish to have that discussion these days, you can understand how on the
other hand it's beneficial.
Speaking of big, big events; member response to Gold Cup Sponsorship this year supports
doing it again next year. And while we think we did a good job of it this year we know we can do better next year. After you've
reviewed Treasurer Nowak's report I'm sure you'll agree it not only makes sense for the entertainment value but it also makes good
economic sense today, tomorrow and into the foreseeable future too.
Regarding our future: seeing into it will be easier from the grill restaurant now that we've authorized, with the help of a donation,
replacement of the foggy windows. The downriver outlook has been improved with the motion accepting the landscaping donation and the motion approving a request to scrap out some old sail boats on the East end which will improve the upriver view too.
In fact, wherever you look the future of our Club looks better. Remaining motions dealt with the acceptance of new members and
the changing status of existing members, which still leaves us wanting…but thanks to lots of hard work we're ahead of our expectations.
The Board would like to thank all who pitched in and helped out with clean-up efforts after the recent storms.
And that's the way it was from the Boardroom in July, 2011.

Happy summer everyone. This is
my fourth summer at the DYC and I
have to say, this is the best so far on
all fronts from my point of view. No,
we are never perfect, but staffing
worked out great this year, members are buzzing with positive energy, and the influx of new members is
extraordinary. We take all this with
a humble view. We must continue
to better the DYC in all areas to preserve this jewel in the city. This
means we all must work together
toward the same goal of enjoying our great Club and respecting its great
history all while sustaining ourselves and our Club into the future. We
must work together and treat each other with the highest respect and
dignity and fairness that we all deserve. The DYC cannot and never will
stand alone. It is a members club for the members. The teamwork is
phenomenal at the Detroit Yacht Club. I know of no other Club that has
such volunteers and support from its members.
We are already getting the budget together for next year and are well
ahead of schedule compared to recent years. We will soon announce
our operating hours for the upcoming Fall and Winter months which I am
sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Stay tuned for that, but remember,
we have to be smart and efficient. We will be incorporating more activities for the winter months and we need you to start thinking about this
now. If you have ideas, send them to me via email, but remember, if you
bring the idea, be ready to carry it from start to finish. We will support
you, but we need your passion to make it happen.
Have a great second half to summer 2011 and I will see you at the
Club!!!!!

The return of the Chef! Although
I have been on the Island for the
past 2 months, my primary focus
has been the many catered
events that our Wonderful Sales
Team booked. We hosted many
return business events (for the
second and third year consecutive year) which is a tremendous
contribution to the DYC’s continued growth! We catered events
for Bravo/Bravo at the Detroit
Opera House, and a Ford Motor
Company event at their Dearborn Test Track. The Ford event
led to an upcoming October event that will have 1000 plus
attendees for 4 days at the Test Track. This is a significant
accomplishment toward the goal established by Mr. Hughes,
the Catering Department and myself to become one of the
major Metro-Area Events Caterers and demonstrate what the
DYC offers while contributing to our business.
Our Wine Society Summer Tasting was very nice as usual
and several members have personally expressed their satisfaction with the improvement with the food and wine pairings.
Their next tasting is in August. I encourage you to join them,
it’s a great experience. Look for the announcement in the
MainSheet!
Race Weekend WoW....! Non-stop action for the Grill, Pool
Grill and Banquets, great weekend and boat deliveries continue to increase every year. Thanks to Commodore Allen for
being our delivery man for the Pit Crews, let’s see where is
that potato salad?? LOL...
The Grill is running close to capacity every weekend and by
the time you read this article, we will have expanded the
menu to include exciting specials for evenings and weekends
for the remainder of the season.
Major August events include Venetian Week; this will be an
enjoyable experience. The Vice Commodore & Chef’s Jazz
Night at the DYC on the Grill Patio. This event will present an
evening of great entertainment " Ribs on the River Buffet" and
Chef's special entrees. The entertainment will start with a
young outstanding trio from Wayne State “The Michael
Webber Trio”. Our headliner will feature the return of “Terry T
and the Variety Pack All-Stars", the last set of the evening will
feature a jam session featuring local artist from legendary
Clubs in the area, including Bakers Key Board Lounge, Bert’s
on Broadway and the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe! This event is the
result of Commodore Barlow and me talking about our love of
jazz and the local talent in Detroit. We decided the DYC
would provide an excellent venue for artist and a great opportunity for members to an enjoyable and fun evening. Our first
Jazz Speakeasy last November featured Terry T brought
about rave reviews and those in attendance had a blast; I
would not miss this one! Now I have to check with Mr. Joe
Brooks and make sure he is on the Grill with his “legendary"
ribs! Somebody should call Bobby Flay, there might be a
Throw Down!
Missed you and look forward to seeing you, as I spend
evenings in the Dining Room. Personally, I thank you for the
wonderful summer we are having.

What's New in DYC Gardens?
Watering the Gardens
We are fortunate to have a sprinkling system for the Oval
Garden. However, in the Gate House Garden and the Corner
Stone Garden we rely on drip hoses with timers to take care
of watering these areas. Over Race Weekend or shortly
thereafter, two things happened.
In the Corner Stone Garden, we have a hose set up on a
timer to water the garden for twenty minutes a day. Someone
disconnected the hose and reconnected it to the wrong faucet.
The garden was not watered and twenty minutes of water was
poured out on the ground every day. Additional plants had
been put in that area the week before so watering was
extremely important. But it did not happen. Two plants are not
doing well, another was removed and these three may have to
be replaced
The situation with the Gate House Garden was different.
The timer was removed and broken in the process. Again the
plants went several days without water and suffered because
of it. Once again we had to replace another water timer.
Using drip hoses and timers have been an effective way to
ensure that the plants get sufficient water to thrive. As you
walk along the Boardwalk you can see that other areas along
the edge of the river are being watered in the same way.
Some of the docks have set up a watering system for their
pots to also ensure that they receive sufficient water. We all
want the plants and flowers to look great.
With the intense heat that we have been having we need to
make sure that we do everything possible to give the gardens
the water they need to grow and stay healthy. I am sure that
whoever removed the hoses and timer Race Weekend did not
intend to damage the plants. They just didn't think beyond
what they wanted. We ask that everyone leave the timers and
drip hoses alone wherever they are placed in any of the gardens and the areas along the riverbank.

far from done. There is always weeding, deadheading, fertilizing and watering that needs to be done. If you see us in the

June and July have been busy months in the harbor. We have
had numerous Yacht Clubs visit including Sand Pointe, Ford,
Put-in-Bay, and others.Thanks to great coordination by our
DYC staff, including Assistant General Manager Bill Bowman,
Harbor Master Ross Bissell, and Grill Manager Mike
Witoszynski, we were able to harbor and entertain 50+ visiting
boats and their passengers. I met with many of our guests that
said they had a great experience and will definitely return in
the future. Not only does this help generate revenue but it is
also a very effective way to promote the DYC abroad.
On July 6th, the DYC Boating Committee coordinated the
safety boats for the 2011 Motor City Mile charitable swim with
proceeds going to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the
Different Strokes Scholarship Fund. On short notice Lindsey
Byers was able to assemble nine DYC burgeed boats and volunteers. Thanks to all those who volunteered and Lindsey for
leading the effort. The main event coordinator Shannon
Dunsworth had considered retiring the 600+ participant swim
due to lack of proper safety protocols. He (yes, he) ensured us
that our participation helped 'save' the event.
The Cardboard Regatta led by Julie Popkie was well attended and everyone had a great time as usual. We look forward
to further developing this event to make it a July 4th tradition.
On behalf of Julie, thanks to all those who helped put the event
together.
Looking forward, August 7th is our Annual Fleet Review,
August 20th is the DYC Poker Run and Maumee Bay is August
26th - 28th. If you are interested in joining us at Maumee Bay,
they have agreed to honor the special pricing arranged by
Commodore Telmos for both wells and condos as long as
there is availability. Please call 800-AT-A-PARK and mention

As a reminder, all event details and registrations for rendezvous are available online at www.dyc.com. I encourage
you to check out the Boating page and use the online system
as this is the best way for rendezvous captains to keep track
of who has signed up as well as inform you of any last minute
changes. Do note that there is still the registration book at the
counter.
Lastly, be sure to check the Boating Page online and read
the article regarding the Simplified Cell Phone Reporting for
Private Boaters. The article describes the method attempting
to simplify the process for foreign boaters entering Canada.
Check the page frequently for more relevant articles, water levels, no wake zones, etc.
It has been a very hot summer putting a large demand on
our antiquated power equipment at the DYC. If you cannot turn
off your A/C while you are away, please consider turning the
temperature up while you are away in order to relieve some of
the strain and prevent brownouts during peak usage.

The R&G Club is looking forward to hosting the Injured
Soldier Musky Derby, known as
Musky-Meet. This event is put
on by the Michigan Ontario
Musky Club, Operation Injured
Soldier and the Detroit Yacht
Club. Soldiers receive both a
free all-day musky charter and dinner at the Detroit Yacht Club.
The charter captains donate their boats & crew with donations
paying for the dinner. Additionally, Detroit Yacht Club R&G members will host a special dinner for the captains who bring their
boats down the night before. The soldiers that enjoy this outstanding event have done tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam or
are currently active duty soldiers, coming from all over Michigan
and neighboring states. This event is Sunday, August 28th, from
8am to 6pm. It is our pleasure to host our countries brave soldiers and we are proud that the DYC was chosen to host this
event. If you would like to donate to this event please contact Bill
Schrader at pmmmarine@sprynet.com. There will be hats for
sale at a cost of $25.00 to help sponsor this derby. Any extra
funds will go to the Military Family Fund, to help the families of
soldiers. Please help support this worthy event.
The Rod and Gun Club sponsors 15 events every year and this
is done on a limited budget. All trophies and prizes for the kids
are paid for by our annual dues of $10.00 per family. This seed
money is very important. This year we are down on dues and
would appreciate those that have overlooked paying their family
dues to please drop off $10.00 cash at the Reception Counter in
the R&G envelop.

Bitter End Improvement, privately funded, has unlimited uses for any and all Detroit Yacht Club members.
The privately funded ideas for improved Club use and
increased membership are many. The Dock Patios,
Bocce Ball, Volley Ball, and Small Boat Launch are a
few examples of successful private funding in these challenging times.
A new design idea that will transform a good idea into
a great idea! Opening the harbor wall of the Bitter End
will transform this existing area into a more enjoyable
and more useable gathering spot.

2. A respite for ALL the members to escape the
day's heat.
3. All members' small groups or a private
place.
Our target of $25,000, will provide the funding for our
air conditioned family rooms three French Doors leading
out to a small member brick patio.
Our plans and budget have been approved by the Board
of Directors as a privately funded project so now we

The peak of summer may be past, but DYC Flying Scots continues to enjoy our 52nd season. Our advanced class just concluded,
providing a new batch of sailors training in racing, spinnaker techniques, and heavy-weather sailing. The always-popular adult
novice sailing instruction program formally wraps up this month
with the crowning of this year's DYC men's and women's Novice
Champions. Our top novice sailors will then compete in September
against the best novices from other local clubs for the title of River
Novice Champion.
Other competitions coming up in September include the Men's
and Women's club championships, followed by the river championships. The DYC Sweepstakes Regatta is always a popular race
for Flying Scot sailors as well.
In September the Flying Scots will once again welcome the
MCSA collegiate regatta. This event is always an action-packed
weekend of racing by some of the region's best college sailors. To
volunteer for race committee or dockside assistance for this event,
or for more information, contact Commodore Alan Minsterman.
October winds up the sailing season with our Fall Series each
Saturday in October, weather-permitting, of course. We don't haul
out until Nov. 5, so there's still lots of sailing to enjoy this year. For

should arrive with two pencils with erasers and a pocketed folder
for their music.
Private lessons are also available for

This past May we celebrated the third anniversary of the founding of the
DYC Kayak Club. It is
hard to believe that just
three years ago there was
only one kayak regularly
used at the DYC. Take a
walk today down to the east end of our island and you will
see a 16 bay kayak rack packed with a rainbow of kayaks.
It makes you happy just to look at their vivid colors. You
just know that their owners enjoy using them.
That kayak rack and much of the success of the Kayak
Club is a result of a happy coincidence. About the same
time we started, Com. Alan Minsterman started his campaign to gentrify the east end of our island. It had been a
dumping place for junk, a weed garden, a mud sea and a
nursery for bugs for years. Com. Minsterman wanted to
make it into integral and important part of the Detroit Yacht
Club. With a lot of sweat equity and engineering knowhow,
he changed the area into a pleasant place for recreation
and just viewing the river. With Com Dawes' new launching rack for small boats, the area has become even better.
By the way 17 new members and/or their significant others have expressed interest in kayaking.

Playscape at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. FREE! Please bring
