Newsletter No. 22. 28th July 2016
Illawarra Primary School Issue No. 22. 28th July 2016 From the Principal Key Dates for 2016 10th Aug “Building resilience in children” presented by clinical Psychologist Lisa Ford in G.P room at7.00pm 17th Aug School Assoc Meeting at 7.00pm in Staff room. 16th Oct School Fair 8th Dec Kingston High School Orientation Day Next Assembly 9th August 2016 at 2.00pm in the G.P Room The first assembly for term 3 was a celebration of new learning in classes and learning that continues from term 2. A number of classes presented items demonstrating aspects of the Arts/History unit that continues from last term and which will remain a major focus for all students this term. Mrs Joy’s Grade 1/2 presented their dioramas of how people communicated in the past; Mrs O’s Prep students explained how they are going to transform their classroom into a museum, the IMAG no less, (Illawarra Museum and Art Gallery); and Mrs Petersen and Ms Davison’s class provided a history lesson about the different levels of society in England around the time when convicts were transported to Australia. The 3/4DP class created clothing worn by the Gorgeous Georgians, fortunately without the lead based face paint and lice ridden wigs. These presentations provided a wonderful precursor for a whole school performance/celebration that will be held towards the end of term. Another important item of the assembly was the announcement made by the school’s skipping team, The Jumping Jacks, of this year’s Jump Off Day being held on August 19th. This year there will be a different approach to raising funds for the Heart Foundation with a variety of incentives being used to assist the school in reaching its target of $1200. I’m not completely certain how it came to be that some of the incentives were agreed to, in particular that certain staff would agree to wearing tutus if $600 is raised. However, it would be a wonderful achievement if we reached our target, as not only will all classes have a movie afternoon, but more importantly the funds will also help the Heart Foundation to continue their great work. Planning for the school fair goes on in earnest under the guidance of the coordinators, Rebecca Skinner and Petra Heil. There is also an enthusiastic group of very hard working parents assisting, liaising and coordinating the different events and stalls. The organisation and planning that has already been completed is most impressive and many of the major decisions have been made. What we need now is for all of the school community to get involved. So please look for a way to contribute in assisting with the success of the fair and contact one of the coordinators. Information was provided with last week’s newsletter. Finally, I would like to congratulate all the students who had their portraits entered into this year’s Young Archie Awards. I understand that the selection of the entries provided in last week’s newsletter was a difficult exercise and I thank all students throughout the school for completing a portrait to be considered. Thank you to Mrs Jules Hodgkinson for coordinating and ensuring the great participation of students in this annual event. Nick Donnelly Principal Illawarra Primary School Department of Education Please note Book Club orders are due back on Wednesday 3rd August . Thank you Kinder Enrolments for 2017 If you have a child who is 4 turning 5 in 2017 please see the office for an enrolment form. It is important so we can begin planning for Pre Kinder in term 4 and Kinder in 2017. Thanks Office team Spare clothes for wet weather As the weather has been wet of late the grounds are very sodden and we are getting a lot of children coming to the office in need of change of clothes. It would be fantastic if children had a change in their bags just in case they need them. Thank you Upcoming parent session on 'Building Resilience in Children' with Clinical Psychologist Lisa Ford! Would you like to learn more about how to support your child in developing their inner strengths such as self-control, self-awareness, confidence and responsibility? Resilience is the ability to navigate life's challenges and find ways to bounce back and thrive. Resilient children can: persevere through challenges delay gratification control impulses The School in conjunction with the School Association would like to invite parents and carers to a free parent information session on 'Building Resilience in Children' presented by Clinical Psychologist Lisa Ford on Wednesday the 10th of August at 7pm in the School Hall, drinks and nibbles provided. Lisa has presented with great success to parent groups at other schools. The staff will also be involved in a session with Lisa and we are very excited about the opportunity to further develop our knowledge on building resilience in children. Developing student's resilience and independence aligns with the direction the school is taking through our commitment to student learning and behaviour support in play and inquiry based learning and restorative practices. Lisa will talk about the importance of imperfection, the role of stress, children developing an internal locus of control, encouraging independence and developing independent thinking, what to do when things go wrong, the importance of risk-taking and embracing mistakes, optimism and more. Give the office a call or drop in to let us know if you would like to attend so we can organise catering. We look forward to seeing many of you on what promises to be an informative and useful night to us all! SCHOOL ASSOCIATION NEWS To enable the Resilience Workshop with Lisa Ford to take place on the 10 th August, the next school association meeting has been changed to Wednesday 17th August at 7pm in the staff room with everyone welcome to attend. If you would like to be included on the email list for school association meetings then please email us at ipschoolassociation@gmail.com We are really excited to be able to bring clinical psychologist, Lisa Ford to the school to present a FREE parent workshop on Building Resilience in Children. School staff will also be working with Lisa, so it is a great opportunity for everyone to be on the same page and be implementing strategies to build resilience. Please see the notice in this newsletter with more information on this session and to find out how to RSVP. Community Grant Last night I was privileged to attend an event with the Kingborough Council to receive a cheque for the funds we were granted as part of their Community Grants Program. The grant will go towards funding the incredible combined Arts and History project that is currently underway in the school – with the funds being used to help bring to life historical stories through building partnerships with local artists and the local community. We are so fortunate to have had Kirsty Grierson as leader of this project in the school – she has put such a huge amount of time and effort in to ensuring this project is inspiring our children to form links within the local community and engage with local history. The culminating event for this project will be an open evening at the school, with the arts projects from each class being displayed in different way. More information about this evening will be provided soon, but it promises to be wonderful. Please ask your children about the artist who has been working with their class – I am sure they will have lots to tell you. This has been modified to be more accessible for our younger students and included for your information and discussion with your child/ren. Staff are currently in the process of working with classes to develop their understanding and get feedback on the consequences of making poor choices so students have greater ownership over and awareness of the outcomes of the choices they make. Student input will lead to a finalised flow chart that assists staff in consistently responding to and supporting student behaviour. Ultimately, guiding students to self-regulate their behaviour and develop an internal locus of control is the aim of all discussions about behaviour. Relating to this is a current 4 part series you may or may not be aware of on SBS On Demand called "Predict My Future: The Science Of Us". One of the predictors discovered to have a significant influence on the path a child’s life may take was 'self-control'. The link is below if you are interested. http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/program/2235/Predict-My-Future-The-Science-Of-Us This four part series looks at the findings from the ultimate nature-nurture test. The mountain of research generated by the Dunedin Longitudinal Study reveals what really makes us who we are, what affect childhood has on as adults, why some of us will go off the rails while others will prosper and be successful. Book Week and Literacy/Numeracy week is coming up! Book Week runs from August 20th to the 26th and National Literacy and Numeracy Week is from 29th August to the 4th of September. A BOOK CHARACTER PARADE will be held on Friday 26th August at 9.15 in the Hall. Children may like to dress up as a character from a favourite book they have and bring the book with them to show. Remember that Book Week is all about highlighting and celebrating the love of reading and its importance as the foundation of learning. Please do not go to too much trouble, just bringing a favourite book to share or creating a character using things from around the house is enough :) Some Buddy class activities will be planned for Literacy and Numeracy week so stay tuned… Take a look at the 2016 short listed picture books below and ask your child if they have read or seen any of these. Look out for them in the book stores too, great for birthday and Christmas presents. The other 2016 short listed books in the categories of: Older readers, Younger readers, Early Childhood and Information books can be found by following the link below. https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2016 Last years winner for 2015 Picture book of the year. Which book will win this year? The Illawarriors In late May of this year a group of children got together and decided to play water polo for the first time and hence the first ever Illawarra Primary School water polo team was born (‘the Illawarriors’). The team entered the Grade 5/6 Mixed division and were feeling quite ready, albeit a bit nervous, for their first game. Unfortunately the first game was against a team that had played the previous year and had won their division, resulting in 10 rather ‘shell-shocked’ players emerging from the water 30 minutes later! Undeterred by this loss the team subsequently demonstrated incredible dedication and resilience and the improvement by all players has been truly remarkable. Every single team member has given absolutely everything during all of the games resulting in the team winning most of their games and beating teams far more experienced than themselves. All of the hard work has paid off resulting in Illawarra finishing 3rd in their division and making the semi-finals! Well done to all of the team – you truly deserve it. All players have thoroughly enjoyed playing the game this season with most of them electing to play Club water polo from August to November this year. The team consists of: Grade 6: Scarlett McGuire, Georgina Brocklesby, Laura Knight, Emily Murdock Grade 5: Mabel Sutherland, Josie Gunner, Ben Brocklesby, Catherine Knight, Calum Doyle and Jett McComb (both from Waimea PS) All Grade 5 players have indicated that they want to play again next year and therefore additional players will be required. Please let myself or Emma know if your child is interested in playing (must be in Grade 5/6 in 2017). Children who are keen to play next year may also want to consider Club polo this season which will be a good lead in to the school competition next year. I will also be happy to provide you with further information or if you just want to have a chat about your child’s suitability etc. Regards, Andrew Knight (coach) 0429 503040 knightsabroad@hotmail.com Emma Mathieson 0467 888924 mathiesonemma@gmail.com Did you know? Water polo was the first ever team sport introduced into the modern day Olympics in 1900.
