MCC is a comprehensive, full-service public community college supported by the taxpayers of our service area. Its
purpose is to provide high-quality educational programs and services, primarily in career preparation and general
education, to people of all ages and educational backgrounds.
MCC is the second-largest postsecondary institution in the state and has the largest and most diverse enrollment of
the six community colleges in Nebraska. MCC offers more than 100 career programs in business administration,
computer and construction technologies, nursing and allied health, social sciences and services and visual and
electronic technologies. In the past academic year, more than 52,000 credit and noncredit students have been
educated at one of our three main campuses, four satellite centers or through online courses.
MCC was created in 1974 by the Nebraska State Legislature and is governed by an 11-member board of governors.
The Metropolitan Community College Foundation advances the comprehensive mission of Metropolitan Community
College by creating community awareness, building and nurturing meaningful relationships and connecting
community partners with giving opportunities that fulfill their philanthropic objectives.
Established in 1977 as a separate, not-for-profit, IRS-approved 501(c)3 corporation, the MCC Foundation provides
financial support for students, faculty, staff, programs and facilities. The Foundation is led by a Board of Directors
comprised of volunteer community leaders who represent a broad cross section of the College’s four-county service
area of Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties.
“The Foundation scholarship I received was life-changing. My most significant
goal for my three-year-old son is to lead by example and show him the
importance of education. The scholarship has begun a legacy of learning in
my family. ”

Last October, I passed the gavel of the Metropolitan Community College
Foundation Board to my successor. At that moment, as I reflected on what
it means to lead this remarkable organization, I was struck by two thoughts:
First, your gifts to the MCC Foundation make a real and lasting difference for
students. And second, those students make a real and lasting difference for
our region.
Did you know that more than 95 percent of MCC graduates stay, live and
work right here in the four-county area. I wonder…where would we be
without those people in our lives? How would goods and services be moved
across our state; could Nebraska continue to serve as a hub for national
logistics and transport? How would accident victims make it to the hospital
and receive immediate professional nursing care when they arrive? How
would local manufacturers build the goods that are cementing our economic
recovery without the precision machine operators to make it happen?
L A R RY JOH NSON

President
Chances are, as you go about your day, the lasting value of Metropolitan
Community College touches your lives in countless ways. Your generous
support of the MCC Foundation helps more students gain the skills they
need to contribute in real and lasting ways to our communities’ growth and
development. Thank you for partnering with us in this important work.
Sincerely,

M ESSAG E F ROM M CC ’S PRES I D EN T
Over the past year,
I’ve had the privilege of meeting with many
different community groups and
organizations and have
visited with hundreds
of people from around our four-county service area. Through those
visits, I’ve received important input about
the community needs R A N DY SCHMA I L Z L
that MCC can help
MCC President
address. Those needs
are great, but if we work together, our potential for
meeting them is even greater.
It is with your input in mind that MCC
has reaffirmed our commitment to these
primary goals:
• Assist students in reaching their goals
Whether they are here to learn a trade, transfer
to a four-year institution or just want to enrich
their lives through lifelong learning, our students’
educational goals are our goals.
• Provide workforce–relevant education
Our nation’s economic recovery can only be
strengthened through the flexible education
community colleges develop with their industry
partners. Together we can address skill gaps
and help get people back to work in
family-supporting jobs.
• Continue to serve as good neighbors and
community partners
MCC values the neighborhoods where our
locations stand, and we strive to be a ‘can-do’
partner that strengthens community improvement
efforts. We pride ourselves in creating
opportunities that ‘take the classroom to the
community’—service-learning, volunteering,
internships and practicum experiences provide
education that can be life-changing—for faculty
and students, as well as our neighbors
and communities.
• Drive the incorporation of technology across
curriculum and operations
Technology touches every aspect of
education—from the classroom to the automotive
lab to the instructor’s desktop. MCC strives to be a
leader in teaching technology across the
curriculum and ensuring that our students and
staff have the 21st century skills they need.
• Make lasting investments in campus facilities
and innovative programs
Our recently completed facilities master plan
provides a road map to the College’s future
investments. Once complete, our learning
environments will foster even more creativity and
achievement and help our region meet some of its
greatest challenges.
• Return the community’s investment
Most well-paying jobs in today’s economy require
some college education. When residents of our
four-county area exit MCC programs, they are
equipped for the workforce, equipped as citizens and demonstrate a daily return on our collective
investment in them.
We appreciate your trust in what we do, how we do
it and why we do it. We could not do what we
do—making a difference in the lives of our
students—without your continued support.
Every day we, as a community, reap the benefits of
education that truly makes a difference. Education
that changes lives for the better. We are honored to
have you as our partners as we continue to impact
so many—yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Sincerely,
YO U R G I F T.

WAYS TO SUP PORT OU R STU D EN TS
At the MCC Foundation, we believe that education has the power to change lives for the better. If you share
our view, we invite you to make a positive impact through your financial support. Your gift can make a
difference by supporting:
•SC HOLA RSH I PS FOR TU I TI ON , B O O KS AN D F E E S
For approximately $6,000, you can support a student earning an associate degree—about a quarter of
the cost of a four-year college or university.
•ST UDE NT S U CC ESS I N I TI ATI V E S
Students with associate degrees earn about $1.6 million more over the course of a lifetime
(source: U.S. Census Bureau) than those with only high school diplomas. Every bit of education
received after high school increases the chances of better wages and a stronger workforce and local
economic base.
•PROG RA M A N D D EPA RTM EN T G ROW T H F U N DS
Staying workforce-relevant requires constant upgrades in technology and instructional techniques.
Your support helps our programs stay current and ensures our students graduate workforce-ready and
competitive in the job market.
•BUILDING A N D FAC I L I TI ES EN HAN C E M E N TS
Help MCC address double-digit enrollment growth and help address community needs through your gift
to support capital improvements.
The MCC Foundation offers many options for those who wish to make a gift to support MCC through
financial contributions of cash, securities, stock, personal property, life insurance or a bequest. In-kind
gifts of goods and services are also a unique way you can provide resources to the College to help leverage
support for fundraising or instructional activities.
Gifts may be designated for a currently established fund or donors may create a new endowment fund for a
pledge of $5,000 or more, which may be paid over a period of five years. Please visit our Ways to Give page
at www.mccneb.edu/waystogive/ on the MCC Foundation website or contact the MCC Foundation at
402-457-2346 for more information.
“I support the Foundation not only because of how it impacted my life but how
it continues to impact the lives of countless others who are looking for a way
to better their lives through education. For many students, the Foundation
scholarships can make a difference in whether or not completing a degree will
be possible. It did that for me!”

Education and workforce are intertwined. A diverse, talented and
educated workforce leads to a better community. The first MCC Express
location, scheduled to open in spring 2012 at 24th and Vinton streets,
will strengthen the educational levels of our community and close
the growing gaps between industry needs and workforce readiness.
This site was made possible through the generous support of local
architects, landlords and donations from philanthropic partners like you.
The site will offer a continuum of services from adult literacy through
specialized workforce training programs that help students effectively
transition to college-level coursework or employment. Core services
include individualized basic skill building; Read Right Reading program
tutoring; accelerated GED programming; English-as-a-Second Language
classes; help in accessing college and community resources; workshops
on career exploration, goal setting, test–taking strategies, health literacy
and financial literacy; skills assessment and career planning; and
job training.
“It is because of our donors’ generosity, vision and dedication to the
well-being of this region and its citizens that we are now better able to serve
the community through the new MCC Express. Donor assistance has allowed
us to expand and enhance our offerings to provide a more comprehensive level
of basic skills education and support services. While some funding comes
from federal and state support, those monies only provide the minimum
level of support. Private gifts are what has made the difference and what is
essential to allow us to fully meet the needs of individuals working hard to
move forward and obtain economic self-sufficiency.”

S E A S O N with S A G E A project brought to life by passion and teamwork—the Season with
Sage cookbook project is just that. With the support of the Gordman
family, students and faculty at MCC’s Institute for the Culinary Arts
worked to create the cookbook in honor of their friend and fellow
student, the late Brandon Thomas (Andrea Gordman is Brandon’s
mother). He was 21-years-old and a few credits shy of completing his
culinary degree when he was fatally injured in a traffic accident in 2010.
This unique project utilized talented students from a wide range of
disciplines—business/marketing, photography and culinary.

In Brandon’s memory, his family created the Brandon Michael Thomas
Culinary Arts Memorial Scholarship at the MCC Foundation and
underwrote the printing for the cookbook. All proceeds from the book
are donated to this scholarship fund. The cookbook can be purchased
for $24.95 plus tax at www.mccneb.edu/seasonwithsage and at MCC’s
Sage Student Bistro, Category One, Lo Sole Mio Italian Restaurant and
Slattery Vintage Estates.

“The generosity and entrepreneurial vision of the Gordman family allowed
MCC students from numerous academic programs to apply their knowledge
and skills to this real–life project. From writing recipes to taking photos to
drafting a marketing plan—these tasks were completed as a labor of love. All
proceeds from the Season with Sage cookbook will feed the Brandon Thomas
Culinary Arts Memorial Scholarship, helping make the dreams of future MCC
culinary and hospitality students come true.”

Project Bridge, an MCC and United Way of the Midlands initiative
and the only comprehensive program of its kind in the Midwest, helps
internationally trained healthcare workers acquire licensure in the
United States while addressing the need for linguistically and culturally
competent healthcare in underserved Omaha communities.
Project Bridge provides consultation, counseling and support to
internationally trained healthcare workers in the region. In addition
to consultation and support in obtaining the appropriate professional
credentials and licenses for their profession, Project Bridge presents
participants with multiple opportunities to diversify their careers
in the healthcare field. These opportunities may include choosing a
different healthcare occupation offered through a community college
or university or focusing their skills and experience in the areas of
healthcare management, research, advocacy, teaching or policy.
Transcript translation and credential verification currently cost
approximately $500 per person. MCC offers a Scholarship for Service
program that allows students to earn $100 per ten hours of community
service up to 30 hours of service. This support requires a minimal
out-of-pocket investment from each student, thanks to the generosity of
donors to the MCC Foundation.
“Project Bridge not only provided me with the money to take the U.S. Medical
Licensing Step 2 Clinical Knowledge Exam but also gave me the required books
to study. In addition, I received strong emotional support from the staff while
studying and encouragement to stay in the Midwest to practice medicine.
The program connected me with a mentor from the University of Nebraska
Medical Center that proved to be an invaluable resource for trading new ideas
and advice about board exams.”
