
Our strategy in Every Student, Every School: Learning and
Support is informed by key facts:

The number of students in our schools with additional learning
and support needs has increased considerably in recent years,
particularly the numbers of students with autism and students

with mental health problems. The majority of these students
have lower level additional learning and support needs and are
enrolled in our mainstream classes, reflecting the preferences
of their parents.

The current specialist service system in our schools recognises
the type of disability a student has rather than the additional
educational needs of each student.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU
On Monday I was given a beautiful James White watercolour “The Boat Shed” as a gift from the students, staff
and the Parents and Citizens Association. I am very appreciative of this special gift. When I have it framed, it
will hang in a special place in our home. Thank you for the privilege of working with and for you all over the last
seven and a half years. I have enjoyed this special place and its special people. I have been very touched by the
wonderful staff night organised for my wife and I last term and this gift from the Hillvue school community.
Warmest Regards

RUGBY LEAGUE
On Monday this week, fourteen boys and girls
represented Hillvue Public School at the NSW
Rugby League All Schools Carnival in Penrith.
All the best primary school rugby league teams
in the state competed. The squad included
Jarrod Peachey, Nicholas Birrell, Joshua
Shanley, Maxwell Cutmore, Sheleaka O'Leary
Cloake, Jellelah Denniss, Schyala Carter,
Thomas McGrath, Michael Flett, Brody Barrie,
Aaron Creighton, Alex McKee, Brandon O'Leary
and Holden Norton. They played two games
against Centaur (Tweed Heads) and Willmott
Public Schools (Penrith). Despite the long
distance traveled, we played very well in the
games. Unfortunately we didn't have a win but
the players all enjoyed the day. A very big thank
you to Mr Alley who volunteered his time to
coach the team and the supportive families who
came on the trip.

ls the NSW Department of Education strategy for implementing the NSW Literacy and Numeracy Action
Plan in 2012.As part of this strategy the NSW Department of Education and Communities will appoint up to
50 lnstructional Leaders.
As a way of introduction my name is Ben van Aanholt and I have been appointed as an lnstructional Leader
to work with Hillvue Public School and Tamworth West Public School. My previous school leadership
experiences, include Principal of Hillvue Public School, Principal of Kootingal Public School and Deputy
Principal of Tamwofth South Public School.
lnstructional leader roles have been tailored in order to meet the context and needs of the school(s)
involved and the school(s) will receive additional resources including funding for personnel, professional
learning and support for K to Year 2 intervention programs.
My role as lnstructional Leader will be to suppod the Principal of both schools to drive improvement
in
literacy and numeracy under the Early Action 4 Success strategy. The role will involve working with the
Principal, leadership team and staff to support the identification of school priorities and planning appropriate
actions to bring about literacy and numeracy improvement.
lt is about realigning school plans,
targets,
expectations and resources as well as overseer the implementation of strategies aimed at achieving growth
in literacy and numeracy in the early years.
I have decided in the line of sight management to base myself at Tamworth West Public School and locate
an instructional leader to work at Hillvue Public School. Their role will be to (and may involve working with
both schools)
enhance teacher capability in improving literacy and numeracy outcomes
provide professional development
work alongside teachers to both model and improve teaching and assessment skills
For students the strategy has three tiers
1.^ to personalise their learning in the classroom
2.
3.
individual and small groups interventions by the class teacher or specialist teacher on programs
intensive, personalised assessment and intervention for students with more
complex literacy and numeracy needs
I am very much looking foruvard to continue working with the very professional and
committed staff at Hillvue.
Regards
Ben van Aanholt
