1912- ( DB_58-PG_123) - The Cistercian Agricultural Society changes their name to The Cistercian Monastery.

containing 16-acres a half mile from the village of Berkeley; also 18 lots on a plat of land Surveyed by Horace Kent

18 May 1909- ( DB_57-PG_376) - John M. Murphy Grants to The Cistercian Agricultural Society the “Jason Sprague
Farm” located south of the highway leading from Ashton to Adamsdale, Mass.
Nine men escaped the ambush of Captain Pierce’s men in near by Central Falls only to be
captured and slaughtered at this spot by Native Americans Loyal to King Phillip, Chief of the
Wampanoag Tribe. The Cistercian Monks found a stone cairn at this spot where the settlers are
believed to have buried the nine men found tortured and killed. The Monks replaced the found
stone cairn with a stone and mortar cairn made with the original stones in 1928. The same year
the State of Rhode Island also erected a concrete pier with a brass plaque which reads: “Nine
Men’s Misery - on this spot where they were slain by the Indians were buried the nine soldiers
captured in Pierce’s Fight March 26, 1676”
14 May 1951 (DB_113-PG_350) - The Cistercian Abbey of the Strict Observance Grants to the College of Our Lady of
the Valley sixteen parcels of land that comprise the “Cistercian Monastery Land”

ecological condition, or educational condition and to prevent any use of the Premises that will significantly impair or
interfere with the conservations values of the former “Cistercian Monastery Land”

of Our Lady of the Valley, Grants to the Town of Cumberland “Cistercian Monastery Land” subject to the terms of
covenants made with the State of Rhode Island.

27 September 1968 – (DB_215-PG_277) – The Town of Cumberland with the assistance of the State of Rhode Island
Green Acres Land Acquisition Act, Chapter 174 of the 1964 Public Laws covenants an agreement with the State that
the “Cistercian Monastery Land” be used for the purpose of recreation or conservation only.

21 March 1950 – FIRE The Woonsocket Call reports the next day: “A fierce fire which raged uncontrollably despite
the efforts of massed Blackstone Valley fire companies, destroyed the three-story guest house, the adjoining chapel,
and badly damaged the infirmary of our Lady of the Valley Monastery of the Cistercian monks last night. Damage was
estimated at $2,000,000.” “There was speculation today weather the monks would rebuild the burned-out structures
since they had made preliminary plans to leave Cumberland to settle on the Alta Crest 700-acre farms in Spencer,
Mass.”
