DIG DEEPER >> One of the most popular dishes at Bida Manda, a Laotian restaurant in Raleigh, is the crispy rice lettuce wrap. Vansana Nolintha ’09, the owner of Bida Manda, shared the recipe so you can try to re-create some of the same culinary magic in your own home. And if you want to try a dish from Chef & the Farmer in Kinston, N.C., owner and chef Vivian Howard ’00 has shared a recipe for her own twist on grilled corn. keyword: Recipes WORTH A LOOK EXTRAS >> The Student Leadership Initiative is an effort by NCSU Libraries to document experiences of student leaders at NC State through the years and record their memories of their time on campus. We’ve shared some of those stories—like that of Cathy Sterling ’77, the first woman to be elected student body president—with our online readers over the last few months. keywords: Student Leadership Initiative see article p. 30 >> Howard may be an accomplished chef, but she ran into one cooking challenge she couldn’t meet while filming her new PBS series, A Chef’s Life. Read all about Howard’s kitchen nightmare and more about the filming of her television series. keywords: Vivian Howard see article p. 30 >> Opening night for Bida Manda did not go well. Nolintha recalls how he fled the restaurant during the middle of dinner service, and then collected himself and got to work addressing the problems. It helped, Nolintha says, that the community was ready to embrace him and his restaurant. keywords: Bida Manda SHARE >> College can be a place for first love, first heartbreak or just a lot of first dates. We’d like to hear your memories of the college dating scene when you were at NC State. Do you remember taking the object of your affections to a special concert or football game? Did you go on a blind date or have a secret admirer? Share your stories and we’ll publish some of them in an upcoming issue of NC State. Write us at ncstate_editor@ ncsu.edu or share your story at redandwhiteforlife.com. keyword: Dating see article p. 40 4 >> It’s not often that students in a 200-level biology class get their work displayed in a state museum. But that’s what happened with the drawings done by the students in a biological illustration class taught by Jennifer Landin ’11 phd. The goals of the course, along with helping students learn about the diversity of life, are to emphasize the power of observation and how drawing can enhance it. Work from Landin’s students was on exhibit earlier this year at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. The detailed drawings include studies of the anatomy of a mosquito head, a comparison of two types of mushrooms and the mechanism of toe adhesion in a gecko. Landin says drawing skills aren’t necessary to succeed in the class. “I teach little tricks the very first week,” she says. “The important thing is getting them to observe closely.” To read more about Landin and her class, visit redandwhiteforlife.com. keywords: Jennifer Landin cathy sterling ’77 photograph courtesy of special collections, ncsu libraries; illustration courtesy of jennifer landin ’11 phd ation boa igh mpa, Rale y ’82, ’90 officer s Ridgewa t, Raleigh t Paul C.
