The Upper Hunter Conservatorium

The Thoroughbred Hotel
The Thoroughbred Hotel has stood
on Kelly St. Scone since the late
1800s. The beautiful landmark has
been screaming out for a fresh look
for some time now, enthusiastic new
leaseholders Tom and Eni McInnes
have taken up the challenge. Six
months of renovating down the
track and they are already proving
themselves more then worthy.
With already the addition of an ATM, a touch
screen tab system and an overall revamp of
the bar itself, Tom and Eni show no signs of
slowing down. The pub itself now offers a great
deal to Scone locals, with accommodation, a
darts competition on Saturdays and the Killer
Pool competition on Wednesdays already
operating, the restaurant due to open early
June, live music presently being booked
and a social club in the plans, the new look
thoroughbred and its husband and wife team
are quickly changing the image of this once
forgotten hotel and are wasting no time in
restoring it to its former glory.
So head down and say hi, maybe enjoy a
schooner in the freshly opened beer garden
and get a feel for the fresh new look, family
friendly thoroughbred.

Local Talent Takes Hold
of the Hunter
Self taught local talent Darryl
Bowen sweeps the hunter valley.
Known to friends as Carrot, the
young rhythm guitarist had been
entertaining and sharing his good
humour and love for music with
locals since he finished year 12
in 1995 when he learnt his first
ever song “Knocking on Heavens
Door”.
A passion ignited and 17 years down the

track, Bowen now in demand, has performed
all over the hunter, from his local pubs in
Aberdeen to the vineyards at Pokolbin all
the way to Canowindra, Nelson’s bay and
Sydney.
Armed with his Cole Clarke guitar and a
stomp box he uses to add beat, Bowen
performs covers from his extensive repertoire
ranging from old style rock, country all the
way thought to modern pop songs. “My
target audience would be hot single women”
says the musician
jokingly, but in reality
his well talked about
performances, great sense of humour
and infectious personality ensures all his
audience members enjoy themselves no
matter what age or gender they may be.
With plans to take on the Newcastle pub
scene the talented Bowen has a bright future
ahead. The solo artist is proof that anyone
can turn a passion into a career. Darryl
“Carrot” Bowen can be seen this coming
