Big Changes Ahead for the
A m e t hy s t Tr a c k C h a l l e n g e
Hot on the heels of the Amethyst Track
Challenge‟s award recognition (see page
4 for more details), Amethyst is thrilled
to announce that registration for the 4th
annual track event is well underway!
This year's Track Challenge will see
many changes from years past. Track
Challenge organizers are looking to
substantially increase the number of
participants in this annual fundraising
event, and will focus on activities that
involve the participation of all team
members.
“Given that this is the fourth year of a
now very well established event, we
thought it could be fun to change up
some of the activities,” said Cynthia
Waldmeier, Community Relations
Coordinator. “We are confident that
these new team-oriented events will
attract not only the participants who
have been with us since 2008 when the
Challenge started, but also entice new
companies to join in on the fun and
support a great cause in the process.”
This year‟s Track Challenge will feature
nine innovative events, as well as many
new prizes.
“I am sure that this year‟s Track
Challenge will offer something fun for
each and every participant, while also
raising funds for a really important
cause in the Ottawa community,” said
Waldmeier.

Amethyst Boosts its Profile through PSAs
on Popular Ottawa Radio Stations
Over the past six months, Amethyst has been fortunate
enough to have two Public Service Announcements
(PSAs) air on Majic 100 FM and all other CHUM radio
stations. Thanks to the wonderful partnership with Codi
Jeffreys, one of the DJs on Majic Morning, the station‟s
popular morning show, the PSAs were formatted for two
separate Amethyst treatment programs: Substance
addiction and problem gambling.
“The PSAs have been invaluable in terms of bringing
awareness of Amethyst‟s important programs to the
broader Ottawa community,” said Cynthia Waldmeier,
Community Relation Coordinator for Amethyst. “The
estimated reach of each PSA has been well over 300,000
listeners, and that is a huge audience for us!”
Anyone interested in listening to Amethyst‟s PSAs can
find them on Amethyst‟s website and Facebook page.

d‟Ottawa », a ajouté Mme Waldmeier.

Amethyst Recognized for Outstanding
Fundraising Campaign With Inter national Award
Amethyst Women‟s Addiction Centre is thrilled to
announce that it was named a finalist in PR News’
prestigious Nonprofit PR Awards. Amethyst‟s annual
Track Challenge was recognized in the category of
Fundraising Campaign. The award accepts entries from
around the world, and is considered one of the highest
honours bestowed on non-profit organizations.
PR News is a Manhattan based publication and is the most
trusted, executive level, reader-supported publication that
helps enhance the business impact of PR. Previous
winners of the PR News’ Nonprofit PR Awards include
such notable organizations as the American Heart
Association, World Wildlife Fund and United Way of
America.
In celebration of this significant achievement,
Amethyst held a local event on November 17th in
recognition of National Addictions Awareness Week
(November 15th-21st) to celebrate the award while
also raising awareness about addiction and the need
for local support services. Amethyst champion and
Majic 100 FM personality Codi Jeffreys was on hand
to emcee the event, and past and present Amethyst
donors and sponsors were also formally recognized
for their dedication to Amethyst‟s fundraising efforts.
“We were incredibly honoured to be named a finalist in the
Fundraising Campaign category,” said Cynthia Waldmeier,
Community Relations Coordinator for Amethyst Women‟s
Addiction Centre. “The fact that we were finalists
alongside notable international organizations like UNICEF
and the United Nations Foundation was very exciting!”
The awards presentation was held on November 3rd, 2010
at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. where
Amethyst was formally recognized with a crystal trophy
symbolizing this accomplishment.
(Above) Amethyst staff celebrate their finalist placement in the 2010 PR
News Nonprofit PR Awards for best fundraising campaign.
With over one million public charities in the United States
alone, Amethyst‟s inclusion as a top three finalist will not
only raise the profile of the organization, but bring much
needed attention to addiction issues and women‟s services.

Centennial Event a Great Success!
March 8th marked the second year
that Amethyst held its now annual
International Women‟s Day (IWD)
event. This year was particularly
special in that it was the 100 year
anniversary of IWD.
IWD was first officially recognized
in 1911. Women in parts of Europe
started demanding equal rights to
education and the workplace to a
much greater and more organized
degree than had been previously
seen.
Amethyst Community Relations Coordinator
Cynthia Waldmeier facilitates the IWD panelist
discussion (above) while a panelist speaks (below).
said Cynthia Waldmeier, Community
Relations Coordinator. “CBC News,
„A‟ Channel, Rogers 22 and the
EMC community newspaper all
featured the event, which
demonstrates that there is clearly still
an audience that is interested in
feminism, and women‟s issues
generally.”
Amethyst‟s IWD event entitled
Feminism: The Other „F‟ Word? focused
on the many ways Feminism can be
defined, and featured discussion
from a diverse panel of communityminded women from the Ottawa
area.
“The media attention we received
for this event was pretty amazing,”
Cette
année, la journée avait une
résonance particulière, puisqu‟il
s‟agissait du centième anniversaire
de la Journée internationale de la
femme.
La Journée internationale de la
femme a été reconnue
officiellement en 1911. Des
femmes partout en Europe ont
alors commencé à revendiquer des
droits égaux à l‟instruction et en
milieu de travail, et ce, de façon
beaucoup plus étendue et
structurée qu‟on ne l‟avait vue
jusqu‟alors.
« L‟attention médiatique que nous
avons reçue pour cette activité a été

assez extraordinaire, a déclaré
Cynthia Waldmeier, coordonnatrice
des relations communautaires. CBC
Newsworld, „A‟ Channel, le réseau
TV Rogers (canal 22) et le journal
communautaire du groupe EMC ont
tous couvert l‟événement, ce qui
démontre qu‟il existe encore
manifestement un public intéressé
par le féminisme et les questions qui
touchent les femmes, de façon
générale. »
L‟activité d‟Amethyst à l‟occasion de
la Journée internationale de la
femme, qui s‟intitulait Féminisme, un
mot qui dérange, ciblait les nombreuses
définitions possibles de ce terme. Il
s‟agissait d‟une discussion animée
par un groupe diversifié de femmes
altruistes de la région d‟Ottawa.

Local Radio Personality a Passionate
Amethyst Supporter
Majic 100 FM‟s popular radio host Codi Jeffreys has
always been actively involved in community awareness
events, having lent her support to various causes over
the years. Her recent connection to Amethyst has
resulted in a very special partnership.
“I approached Codi last summer to participate as our
2010 Track Challenge MC, and was delighted when she
showed such an interest in Amethyst as a cause to get
further involved with,” commented Community
Relations Coordinator Cynthia Waldmeier. “Codi has
been very pro-active in learning about the centre, and
is always available to assist Amethyst with events and
important media coverage.”
Codi has been instrumental in participating in several
Amethyst events since the Track Challenge in July.
She served as event MC for Amethyst‟s recent
Nonprofit PR Awards event that took place last
November, and she has promoted a variety of issues
relating to Amethyst on her radio show including
National Women‟s History Month and National
Addictions Awareness Week.
“It has always been important to me to use my status as
somewhat of a public figure to bring attention to many
of the important services Ottawa has to offer,” says Codi
Jeffreys. “Women‟s issues and addiction services are two
things I am personally committed to, so my relationship
with Amethyst has really resulted in a perfect fit.”
Codi will again be featured as the event MC for the 2011
Track Challenge, and hopes to also have a team from
Majic participate in the athletic events.
“We look forward to many more collaborative projects
with Codi in the years to come,” continues Waldmeier.
“Her passion and enthusiasm make her a fantastic
Amethyst spokesperson, and we could not be happier
with her involvement.”
