s per news reported on CBC that two Canadians linked to
al-Qaeda and killed while staging a bloody attack on an
Algerian gas refinery earlier this year were former high
school friends in their early 20s, one from a Greek Orthodox family,
and both from a comfortable middle-class London, Ont.,
neighbourhood.A special CBC News investigation has confirmed
the two al-Qaeda linked militants are Xristos Katsiroubas and Ali
Medlej, both believed to be under 24 years old.The attack by the two
Canadians and 30 other militants linked to al-Qaeda left more than three
dozen refinery workers dead, the final 10 of whom were reportedly tied
to gas plant piping and killed in a massive bomb blast. It is likely
Katsiroubas and Medlej intentionally blew themselves up in the blast;
only one of them could be identified by DNA testing.
There are few Canadians who want to fight various wars across
the globe sitting here in Canada. And in some case they also join the
action using Canadian Citizenship to their advantage. We have people
from both sides of the fence here in Canada and these very elements
can potentially damage the peace of Canadian Society. As per
reports in Toronto Sun - RCMP spokesman Greg Cox confirmed

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney that the
Canadian government is highlighting the increase
in numbers of immigrants landing in Canada but
what about the integration process for new

involvement of dual Canadian citizens in the alQaida-linked Algeria gas plant attack in January.
The Minister said "This is one issue which is

to say whether the individual was among the militants or
victims. This revelation follows last year's connection between a
Canadian and the Hezbollah-linked bus bombing in Bulgaria.

US REFUSES TO DECLARE 1984 ANTI-SIKH
VIOLENCE IN INDIA AS GENOCIDE
O
bama administration refused to acknowledge the 1984
anti-Sikh violence that took place in India as geno
cide. However, the White House did not hesitate to
proclaim that a grave human rights violation had taken place.
This comes after a section of the Sikh community in the US
initiated an online petition campaign requesting the Obama
Administration to declare the 1984 riots as genocide. A total of 30,000 Sikh people in US signed the petition seeking
the US government to declare the 1984 riots as genocide. A
petition containing more than 25,000 signatures was reviewed.
In its response, the White House clarified saying that during and after the 1984 riots, the United States has been
continuously keeping an eye and repor ted in public about
the grave incident of human rights violation that took place
against the members of the Sikh community.
The House also considered the US State Depar tment's Official Country Repor ts on Human Rights that covered the violence and its consequences and also condemned the disagreement of fair public trials, harmful effects on freedom of
religion and also the government's response to civil society
association scrutinizing allegations of human rights violations.
In response to the online petition, the House said that it has
long been a feature of the US government to protect the rights
and freedom of all people. Us representatives also repor ts
on a regular basis and speaks out against violence against
minorities around the world, noted the House.
Meanwhile, the proponents of the petition expressing dissatisfaction over the Obama administration .

INCREASING COMPETITION WILL
CHALLENGE RETAILERS BUT MAKE IT A
GOOD TIME TO BE A CONSUMER
TORONTO: Discount department stores are poised to take more
market share in the year ahead as debt-conscious consumers and
tame wage growth weigh on Canadian retail spending, according to
CIBC World Markets Inc.
"Canadians have heard the message from Ottawa: be careful
what you borrow for. But turning
more
prudent
on
debt
accumulation has meant leaner
times for retail spending growth
over the last year," says Avery
Shenfeld, Chief Economist at
CIBC, in a note published for
CIBC's Retail and Consumer
Conference happening today in
Toronto.
With a weak finish to the 2012 holiday season, retail sales grew
at lean rate of 2.5 per cent last year, marking "the second year of
deceleration from a heady 5.6 per cent pace in 2010, when households
were much more eager to borrow at low rates to finance their shopping
spree," notes Mr. Shenfeld.
With job growth expected to decelerate in 2013 and wages
remaining "fairly tame" in 2013, disposable income gains will likely
remain modest this year. "In that climate, discount stores will continue
to grab market share, particularly given the entry of a major U.S.based player this year," says Mr. Shenfeld
In another conference note, Perry Caicco, a CIBC Equity Analyst
who covers the consumer and merchandising industry, identifies
two other consumer trends likely to exert competitive pressure on
the retail sector.
One is the increasing tendency by Canadian consumers to
"purchase on promotion." Mr. Caicco says that "over the last three
years, a material amount of the windfall from a strong Canadian
dollar was passed through as increased deals." This has made
Canadian consumers, who are already debt-conscious, "increasingly
addicted to deals" and "more sceptical than ever about regular
prices," he says.

Punjab police ASI shot dead
near restaurant in Jalandhar
I
n yet another killing of an
official of Punjab Police, an
assistant
sub-inspector
(ASI) was shot dead by
unidentified people near
Jalandhar city late Sunday night,
police said Monday.
ASI Gurdev Singh, who was
on duty on National Highway
No. 1 (Delhi-Amritsar) was
allegedly shot dead near Haveli
Restaurant, 10 km from Jalandhar
city and 150 km from Chandigarh.
This is the fourth killing of a
Punjab Police officer in the
month of March.
Since December last year,
five ASIs have been killed in
separate incidents.
According to police, the ASI
was chasing a youth who
appeared suspicious. A car
stopped near the ASI, one man
emerged and shot the police
official at close range. A head
constable,
who
was
accompanying
the
ASI,
managed to save himself.
The head constable said
there were three people in the car,
who sped after gunning down
the ASI.
The slain ASI Gurdev Singh
had escaped an earlier attack
about six months back, a senior
police officer of the Kapurthala
police said today. At that time the
assailants had snatched his
service revolver before fleeing
from the scene.
Gurdev Singh, originally
belonged to Karamjitpur village
in Sultanpur Lodhi presently was
living with his family in the
quarters at the Kapurthala police
lines.
The police had started
collecting footage from the
CCTV cameras installed in and
around Haveli restaurant and
other business premises around
the site of incident which
claimed the life of an ASI.
ASI Ravinder Pal Singh
Mangat was killed March 29 after
being assaulted by a truck driver
near Patiala town, 80 km from
here. The ASI had signalled the
truck to stop near the upcoming
campus of the Rajiv Gandhi
National Law University during
a VIP visit.
Another ASI, Kulbir Singh
died in mysterious circumstances
when he went with a police
raiding party to a village in Tarn
Taran district March 5 to take
protesting farmers' leaders into
preventive custody.
Another ASI was found
dead in Punjab's Barnala area last
month. In December last year,
ASI Ravinder Pal Singh was shot
dead near Amritsar while trying
to stop a ruling Aklali Dal leader
from harassing his daughter.
ITALIAN ENVOY FREE TO LEAVE INDIA
T
he Supreme Court on
Tuesday vacated its
order restraining Italy’s
Ambassador Daniele Mancini
from leaving India as the two
Italian marines, accused of killing
two fishermen, returned to India
to face the proceedings as per
commitment given by him to the
court.
A bench headed by Chief
Justice Altamas Kabir vacated its
March 14 order by which it had
restrained the Ambassador from
leaving the country after the
Italian government had refused
to send back the marines.
The court also directed the
Centre to take immediate steps
for setting up a special court to
hold proceedings against Italian
marines Massimiliano Lattore
and Salvatore Girone, who had
allegedly killed two fishermen off
Kerala coast last year.
The court had on March 14
asked the envoy not to leave the
country without its permission.
The bench had on March 18
expressed its anguish over the
Ambassador “reneging” from his
undertaking to the court on the
return of the marines.
It had said that the envoy
had breached its trust over his
undertaking on return of the
marines and had also told him
that he did not enjoy diplomatic
immunity. Sensing the mood of
the apex court, the Italian
government later agreed to send
back the marines and they
reached India within the time
limitation fixed by the court.
The two marines, who were
allowed by the apex court on
February 22 to go to Italy for four
weeks to cast their vote in the
general elections there, had
returned on March 22.
The bench had on March 18
also said that the period of four
weeks for which the marines
were allowed to go to Italy to cast
their vote was yet to be over and
they still had time to return.
On February 22, the apex
court had questioned the
government as to why it was
“dragging its feet” on the issue
of setting up a special court for
trying the two Italians.
It had also taken exception
to the Centre not following its
January 18 direction to consult
the Chief Justice of India for
setting up a special court.
The two marines were on
board an Italian vessel Enrica
Lexie when they allegedly shot
dead two fishermen on February
15, 2012.
I WANT TO BECOME THE PM - AGAIN
The Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh appeared not
to rule himself out of the race
for Prime Ministership after the
next Lok Sabha elections in India.
Asked by repor ters yesterday
whether he would accept another term in office if Congress
President Sonia Gandhi offers
him prime ministership again
after 2014, Singh said: "these
are all hypothetical questions.
We will cross that bridge when
we reach there".
Rahul Gandhi had recently
maintained that asking him
about Prime Ministership is
putting a "wrong question" to
him.Senior Congress leader
Digvijay Singh had said that the
model of having "two power
centres" has not worked well
and suggested that Rahul
Gandhi should not opt to nominate a Prime Minister if the
par ty gets a majority in the next
Lok Sabha polls.
"...I strongly feel that ...when
time comes and if the Congress
gets majority or it is in a position to form the government, I
think Rahul Gandhi should take
the call.
"Even if a Congress-led coalition emerges, he (Rahul) is mature enough to handle the intricacies of coalition politics.
Then ofcourse, we have senior
colours. And that too being audaciously ambitious," BJP chief
spokesperson Ravi Shankar
Prasad told repor ters in response
to a question.
"Whether the comment of
Manmohan Singh is more aimed
at his foes in Congress or to put a
question mark on Rahul Gandhi's claim
for the post of Prime Minister, for which
a consistent chorus is going on within
the Congress, is entirely the internal
matter of Congress," Prasad said.
Senior Congress leader Janardhan
Dwivedi on Tuesday indicated that
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
might be projected as its candidate for
the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, vir tually ruling out par ty's vice president Rahul Gandhi out of the race.
leaders who have very succ e s s f u l l y h e l p e d t h e U PA t o
complete two terms," Singh had
said.
Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh's cryptic remark leaving
open the possibility of him being in the race for a third term
prompted BJP to call him a "reluctant" politician who has
shown his true "political
colours".
"Dr Manmohan Singh is a very
reluctant politician. But what is
surprising is that few days after Holi, the reluctant politician

COPS PLANTED VIJENDER'S
CAR OUTSIDE DRUG DEALER'S
HOME: BOXER DINESH KUMAR
The drug scandal surrounding Vijender Singh on Tuesday took
a new twist with one of his fellow pugilist Dinesh Kumar disputing the claims of Punjab Police even as the spor ts ministry
explored ways to subject the star boxer to a heroin test despite
NADA's refusal to do so.
Almost a month after the scandal broke out, Dinesh, an Asian
Games silver medallist, claimed that Punjab Police planted
Vijender's car outside the flat from where heroin was recovered.
Contradicting the Punjab Police version, Dinesh said that he
and one of his friends had accompanied Ram Singh at the
police station but the policemen asked them to go and leave
the car behind which was later found at Zirakpur.
"Me and a fellow boxer Bunty accompanied Ram Singh to
Fatehgarh Sahib police station in the car which the police
claim was found outside the flat. When we reached there, the
police told us that Ram would have to be questioned," Dinesh
said.
"The policemen insisted that we leave the car at the station
only. We objected to it and told them that the car was not ours
and had to be taken back to Patiala but they forced us to leave
the car at the station and told us to go back," he said.
The sports ministry, which had on Monday stepped in to clear
the air by asking NADA to test the boxer, was waiting for a
written response before deciding its future course of action.
The NADA, which is an autonomous body, is willing to conduct a regular out-of-competition dope test on Vijender but
has expressed its inability to test the Olympic bronze-medallist for heroin citing World Anti-Doping Agency's protocol.
"We have not asked NADA to proclaim anything on his guilt
but just conduct a test to find out whether he took heroin... the
NADA has not conveyed anything to us in writing, let them do
that first and then we will think of our stand," spor ts secretary
P K Deb said. Dinesh said after failing to retrieve the car, they
headed back to Patiala only to find out later that the vehicle
had been found in Zirakpur. "We were stunned because the car
was in police custody when we left. How it reached Zirakpur
is a mystery to us," said the light heavyweight boxer.
Asked why he did not reveal these details when the controversy initially broke, Dinesh said, "We were scared given that
Ram is still in police detention and the way Vijender is being
maligned." Vijender has been accused of taking heroin 12
times by the Punjab Police which has interestingly not conducted any test on the boxer due to his refusal to give hair and
blood samples. "People at NIS know that the car was in the
campus and the police planted it in Zirakpur. I have spoken to
Viju a few times, he is very low because he is innocent and is
being maligned in the media," he said.

But a lawyer in Windsor, Ont., has since spoken to CBC News
about Nguyen, saying he once served time for a home invasion
and robbery that occurred when he was a teenager.
Defence lawyer Frank Miller said that he met Nguyen after he
was charged in the incident in Windsor.Nguyen later received
an adult sentence. Miller lost contact with him."I was surprised,
shocked and saddened to hear that he had been shot to death
in Toronto," Miller said.
Miller said Nguyen impressed him as "a bright, engaging,
intelligent, insightful young man," who also had a history of
trouble with the law.But he believed that Nguyen was a young
man who "had some potential, had a great deal of potential to
make something of himself if he chose to follow a positive
track, if you will, in the world."
Miller said that police officers had alleged Nguyen was "heavily
involved" with a street gang known as the "Asian
Assassins."Police said they knew who the members of the
street gang were because they had posted a photo of
themselves online, Miller said. The CBC's John Lancaster
reported Monday that the Toronto street gang known by that
name is now part of another group called the Project Originals.
Dozens of police officers were brought into the investigation
after the shooting to help look for evidence that could be found
within the sprawling crime scene in the mall parking lot.
Hundreds of vehicles in the parking lot remained cordoned off
as police conducted their investigation. At least one vehicle
was towed away from the lot by police on Saturday.
They released the remaining vehicles to their owners on Sunday
afternoon. Police will be reviewing hours of video footage
captured by cameras inside and outside the mall. Police also
say there were five or six people in the immediate area of the
shooting, and investigators want to speak to them.
The violence on Saturday night is not the first time that a
shooting has occurred on the mall property.
In April 2009, a security guard was shot while attempting to
arrest two robbery suspects. He was wearing a safety vest
that police credited with saving his life.
The incident comes almost 10 months after a shooting
downtown at the Toronto Eaton Centre in which one man died
at the scene and another was fatally wounded and died in
hospital days later. Five other people were wounded, but
survived the shooting. Investigators are urging any of the
hundreds of shoppers who were at Yorkdale Saturday night to
come forward if they saw anything. They're asked to call
detectives at 32 Division at 416-808-3200.

THE CANADA JOB GRANT AND INCREASED
OPPORTUNITIES FOR APPRENTICES WILL
HELP CONNECT MORE CANADIANS WITH
AVAILABLE JOBS IN THE MARKET.
BRAMPTON, ON- Today, Kyle Seeback, Member of Parliament for
Brampton West, hosted a media roundtable on the recently tabled
Federal Budget; our Conservative Government’s 2013 Economic Action Plan (EAP 2013). Many media outlets were present and engaged
in healthy dialogue with MP Seeback.
EAP 2013 builds on our Conservative Government’s focus of creating
jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for hardworking Canadian families.
EAP 2013 will create jobs and economic growth by taking action in
three impor tant areas: connecting Canadians with available jobs; introducing a new Building Canada Plan; and suppor ting Canada’s manufacturing sector. The Canada Job Grant and increased opportunities
for apprentices will help connect more Canadians with available jobs
in the market.
The Building Canada Plan encompassing the Community Improvement Fund, the Building Canada Fund and P3 Canada Fund demonstrates our government’s continued commitment to local and regional
infrastructure. The new plan represents the largest investment in job
creating infrastructure in the history of Canada.
“The 2013 Budget is a great step forward in helping community infrastructure and suppor ting Canadians”, said Akbar Warris
An open letter to the president: Stung to the quick by your
sentiments that our innovative capacity is “so far discouraging”, i’d like to bring to your kind attention some of our major
innovations on behalf of all Innovative Indians.
According to Wikipedia, the new gospel, innovation, means
a better, novel idea or method. And according to the famous
robotics engineer Joseph F Engelberger, innovations require
only three things: a recognised need, competent people with
relevant technology and financial support.
Let us take a look at the major authorities first. The literal
builders of our society – those responsible for the infrastructure we live in. Take the small example of roads. You may not
come across these in your car-cades past the most majestic
areas of Delhi. But did you know of the innovative people
behind the roads in the rest of the country? Do you, sir, know
how they work hand in glove with our traffic police to prevent
accidents 24x7?
While the rest of the world makes long-lasting smooth
roads with no thoughts for lives lost in accidents such roads
will surely invite, our redoubtable PWD makes roads guaranteed to melt with the first monsoon showers and the appearance of potholes at strategic points, thereby making
speeding impossible.
For those who still dash at 30 km/hr, we have those enforcers of law. They generously allow encroachment till pavement-shops, illegal by themselves, spill out on roads, and
turn a blind eye to roadsides turning into comfor table parking zones. This is sheer competence as in one stroke it reduces road width by 20-30% and transforms budding FI racers to tor toises. Can you, sir, imagine anything this effective
at practically no extra cost?
In fact, instead of needing financial support, it creates financial oppor tunities! How much more innovative can you
get? An impor tant byproduct of this whole exercise also happens to be employment generation and circulation of money,
essential for a growing economy. Bad roads essentially mean
good work for more and more people for more and more
years.
Next, the crucial need of the hour – our environment. Save
water, save the Ear th etc. Here our water depar tments shine.
We’re far too fond of baths and washing and turn deaf ears
even to the Big B advising us to use less water. So what does
our efficient waterworks do? It cur tails water supply.
Simple. No water, no baths. As for their foresight, quite
often they place water and drainage pipes so close to
each other that if the need arises they could just puncture
and mix as required. Mind-blowing, sir!
Fast but unsteady is our motto, when we come to the
judiciary. Knee-jerk laws be damned, we believe in action. At least as far as making a law goes. Whether it
helps or hinders is another matter altogether. Whether it
is implemented is actually a dumb question. The majority
of the judiciary would be left twiddling their thumbs if that
were to happen. Our tolerant systems, long-winded procedures and loopholes are philanthropic innovations ensuring steady work for years and years for all concerned.
While the world fights recession, we find ways to keep generations busy.
BRICS SUMMITS ARE SO LAST DECADE
All members are slowing down, with conflicting
interests leaving them less willing to cut deals
RUCHIR SHARMA
Every decade for the last half century, a new economic force has
arisen to capture the world’s admiration, most recently Japan in the
1980s and Silicon Valley in the 1990s. But as both those cases
show, the big thing in one decade rarely stays hot in the next.
In the last decade the hype was for the Brics – an acronym for
Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – as the rising axis of
global economic might. This sense of destiny inspired the launch of
the Brics summits, but by the time the latest summit had closed in
Durban, the optimism was greatly diminished, and the search for
common ground was increasingly elusive.
The inherent tensions between the Brics complicates the task of
getting anything practical done at the summit. China’s economy
dwarfs all the others combined, triggering natural suspicions. The
summit had aimed to create a Brics bank to challenge western
institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, but the talks ended
inconclusively over who would fund the bank, and for what purpose.
On a recent visit to South Africa, it was clear that many members
fear China, with its huge war chest of foreign currency reserves,
would dominate a Brics bank. Several South African CEOs told me
that China was interested in their country mainly as a staging point
for access to the rest of Africa. With economies and commercial
interests this widely varied, it’s not surprising that in five previous
summits dating back to 2009, these par ties have produced little
concrete action.
The bigger story now is that the Brics are beset by domestic
economic challenges that leave them less willing or able to cut
deals at global summits. Last decade, many economies could grow
by riding the tide of easy money pouring out of the US and Europe,
and the resulting expansion in global trade. Now, the easy money
has dried up and growth in global trade is slowing. It is every nation
for itself.
All the Brics are slowing sharply. China’s economy has slowed
from an average annual growth rate of 11% in the last decade to
less than 8% in 2012. That has taken the wind out of economies that
set sail by selling raw materials to China, par ticularly Brazil and
Russia, where GDP growth slipped to 1% and 3.5%, respectively,
last year. Investors are heading for other destinations, and in dollar
terms the Brics stock markets are trading 30-40% below the peaks
of the last decade. But, once again, the politicians are a step behind.
The Brics no longer look like a rising economic axis. On average,
the growth rate of Brazil, Russia and South Africa is likely to be
around 2.5% over the next few years, about the same pace as the
US. That would be a terrible disappointment for these developing
nations eager to catch up to the West, as their per capita income is
much lower than that of the US. Owing in good par t to the Brics
slowdown, the US economy is now growing at the same pace as
the global average for the first time since 2003, leading to
stabilisation in its share in the world economy at around the longterm average of 23%.
India’s economic interests are more closely aligned with the US
than with the other Brics. A major impor ter of oil and other commodities, India stands to benefit like the US from falling commodity
prices, which are hur ting major commodity expor ters like Russia,
Brazil and South Africa. Yet no leader at the summit is feeling the
heat at home as much as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, given
widespread disappointment over the collapse in economic
growth, from over 8% in 2010 to barely 5% now. For a countr y
with an average income of only $1,500, this feels like a recession.
In Asia, economies including Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines are now growing faster than India and attracting more
foreign direct investment. The Brics nations in fact face challengers on every continent – Mexico and Chile in Latin America, Turkey
and Poland in Europe.

INDIAN-AMERICAN TO BE FIRST SOUTH
ASIAN CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE IN US
WASHINGTON: Described by
US President Barack Obama as a
'trailblazer', Indian-American
Srikanth Sri Srinivasan has
moved closer to become the first
South Asian circuit court judge
in the history of the United
States.
A year after he was
nominated by Obama on the US
Court of Appeals for the District
of Columbia Circuit, the Senate
Judiciary Committee yesterday
announced its decision to hold
his confirmation hearing on April
10, which was immediately
welcomed by the White House.
Srinivasan, 46, born in India
and raised in Lawrence, Kansas,
is currently serving as the
Principal Deputy Solicitor
General of the US.
"Sri (Srinivasan) is of course
also a highly respected appellate
advocate who has spent a
distinguished career litigating
before the US Supreme Court and
the US Court of Appeals, both in
private practice and on behalf of
the United States for both
Democratic and Republican
administrations," White House
Press Secretary Jay Carney told
reporters.
"He has argued before the
Supreme Court 24 times, drafted
briefs and several dozen
additional cases, and has also
served as lead counsel in
by Republican home-state
senators who support their
nominations, he noted.
Since the beginning of the
year, the Senate has confirmed
nine judicial nominees. "That is
good," he said.

federal and state appellate
courts," Carney said yesterday
after the announcement of dates
for confirmation hearing for
Srinivasan.
Tweleve former officials
from the Solicitor General's office
-- six of them Democrats, six of
them Republicans -- all
announced their support for him
yesterday.
Carney said the signatories
of the letter, including Paul
Clement, Ted Olson, Ken Starr,
and Walter Dellinger, wrote, "Sri
has a first-rate intellect, an openminded approach to the law, a
strong work ethic, and an
unimpeachable character. Sri is
one of the best appellate lawyers
in the country."
The DC Circuit is often
considered the nation's secondhighest court, but it has twice as
many vacancies as any other
court of appeals, and its
workload has increased by over
20 per cent since 2005, he said.
"Sri's confirmation will be an
important first step to filling this
court's four vacancies, and he
will be, when confirmed, the first
South Asian circuit court judge
in history," Carney said as he
urged the Senate to move swiftly
to confirm the 15 additional
judicial nominees waiting for
votes. Of those 15, 13 were
approved out of the Judiciary
Committee unanimously, not a
single Republican dissent. And

LONDON: Super-rich Indians account for more than 20% of the
wealth of ultra-high net wor th (UHNW) individuals in Britain, a
new list showed on Tuesday. As a national group, they are second only to expat Russians.
The list, published by the Singapore-based Wealth-X group,
places steel
magnate and ArcelorMittal chairman Lakshmi Mittal at second
place with a for tune of $15.8 billion. Mittal was pushed to the
second spot this year by Russian Alisher Burkhanovich
Usmanov, who is par t owner of the English football club Arsenal and is wor th $16.4 billion.
“Mittal has seen his net wor th estimate decline along with the
stock price of ArcelorMittal, losing at least $30 billion in recent
years,” the repor t said.
The two other Indians on the top 15 list are the Hinduja brothers
— Srichand at number 9 with a net wor th of $7.6 billion and
Gopichand at 12th with $6 billion.
Taken together, the wealth of the three Indian-origin industrialists makes up 22% of the top 15 total of $133.3 billion.
Apar t from Usmanov, the two other Russians in the list include
Roman Abramovich (at number 3, $12.1 billion) and Leonard
Blavatnik (Number 5, $9.5 billion).
According to Wealth-X estimates, there are 10,760 individuals
residents in Britain worth $30 million or more, with at least 310
new individuals joining the ranks of the ultra wealthy. On an
average, Britain has added one UHNW individual every day
since 2011. The combined wealth of the UHNW in Britain stands
at an estimated $1.3 trillion.
“The wealth composition of the United Kingdom, London in particular, is diverse,” said David Lincoln, Director of Research at
Wealth-X. “This is reflected in our data showing that 31% of the
UHNW population in the United Kingdom is considered nondomiciled, with non-resident Indians and West AsianUHNWIs
making up a significant propor tion of these.”
Australian court
absolves Sikh man
of traffic violation
charges
MELBOURNE: A Sikh man, who was penalized by the Australian police for not wearing helmet while riding a bike, has been
absolved of the charges by a Queensland cour t, which also
pulled up the traffic authorities for the decision.
"How on ear th is a bike (rider) going to get a helmet over his
turban?" magistrate Stuar t Shearer of the local court was quoted
as saying in media repor ts.
23-year-old Jasdeep Atwal was imposed a fine of 100 dollars
last year and was facing conviction on charges of violating
traffic norms, but the cour t yesterday announced its decision to
exempt him of any fine, an ABC repor t said.
According to the repor t, Atwal told the court he had only ever
taken off his turban to sleep or wash his hair.
"The law indirectly discriminates against Sikhs from riding bicycles because essentially we cannot wear a helmet," Atwal
said.
"It's (the cour t) absolved me of all the charges, I've got no fines
to pay and no demerit points on my licence. This is a bit of a
landmark which we will be able to use in our lobbying in the
future," he said.
Meanwhile, media repor ts said that the latest verdict could
potentially prompt Queensland police to revise their transpor t
policy.
Currently the only exception to the rule under the Transpor t
Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulation
2009 is if cyclists have a medical cer tificate.
Kur t Fowler, an exper t in the fields of criminal and traffic defence law, said this case will potentially require Queensland
police to revise their policy in this area.

Stop Terrorists from getting

Contd. from Page 1
In that case, the Vancouver-born terror suspect had travelled
from his new home in Lebanon to Bulgaria and returned using his
Canadian passport. The reason at least three known terrorists have
now been found to have travelled on Canadian documents to commit
their ghastly work abroad is easily explained.Appearing before a
recent hearing of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and
Immigration, a senior official with the Canadian Security Intelligence
Service (CSIS) said terrorist groups were actively seeking Canadian
passport holders because they attracted less suspicion.
Devinder Shory, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast,
is urging all parliamentarians to support Private Member's Bill C425, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (honouring the Canadian
Armed Forces), as the proposed legislation is debated at Second
Reading today in the House of Commons.
"Canadian citizenship is an honour and a privilege," MP Shory
stated. "Those who put themselves on the front lines for Canada
deserve to be acknowledged, while those who repudiate their
citizenship by committing violent acts against Canada's armed forces
should not be able to retain it."
The Private Member's Bill would expedite by one year Canadian
citizenship for permanent residents who serve in the Canadian
Forces. At the same time, it would trigger the renunciation of Canadian
citizenship for those who engage in acts of war against the Canadian
Forces. This bill would put Canada in line with other countries such
as Australia and the United States who already have similar policies
in place.
A poll last autumn found that 8 out of 10 Canadians agreed that
"Canadian citizens who are found guilty of committing acts of treason
against Canada - such as an act of war against Canadian troops should be stripped of their citizenship." The poll found strong
support in every part of Canada, among a wide demographic range.
Immigrants for Canada has expressed support for Bill C-425
stating, "This bill that proposes to re-enforce and encourage the
value of Canadian citizenship and loyalty to Canada, is a welcomed
one."
"I look forward to the opportunity to debate this important
piece of legislation," MP Shory said. "I hope that all Members of
Parliament will support strengthening the value of Canadian
citizenship and pass this legislation on to committee stage for further
review and improvement."
One of the main concerns put forward by opposition MPs has
been the creation of what they call a two-tier citizenship system,
where dual citizens are treated differently than single-nationality
Canadians.
MCC president Salma Siddiqui said she didn't see it that way
and appeared to address the opposition when she said the bill wasn't
cold-hearted toward immigrants bur rather about taking "pride in
our citizenship."
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney reiterated Tuesday that the
bill will be amended to include terrorism.
"If you are a Canadian citizen who's a dual or multiple national
and you are convicted of a terrorism-related offence with a custodial
sentence of five years or more, that would be considered a
renunciation of citizenship."
Also before committee were two representatives from the UN
High Commission on Refugees, who fear the bill could potentially
leave individuals stateless.
"(Our concerns is that this creates a) situation in which there's
different treatment for different groups of people," Furio De Angelis,
Canada rep for the UNHCR, told committee.
But asked whether he would support the bill as long as it would
not leave anyone stateless, De Angelis' answer was a simple, "Yes."
Our Conservative Government believes that Canadian nationals
who hold dual citizenship should be stripped of their Canadian
citizenship if they commit acts of war or terror abroad. Such an act is
a show of disloyalty against Canada, and is a violent renunciation
of one's Canadian citizenship.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews also supports the Bill "I support
my colleague, the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship,
Immigration and Multiculturalism, who is working to add this
provision to MP Devinder Shory's private members bill which is
currently before Parliament.
Bill C-425, an act to amend the Citizenship Act (honouring the
Canadian Armed Forces), would allow the government to strip a
dual Canadian national of their passport and citizenship if they commit
an act of war against Canadian soldiers. I agree that this should also
include acts of terrorism committed abroad.
To be clear, this would not apply to individuals who only have
Canadian citizenship because it is against international law to render
a person stateless.
I feel strongly that individuals who commit an act of war or
terror against our Canadian armed forces or civilians should forfeit
the right of Canadian citizenship. Permanent residents who do the
same will have their citizenship application withdrawn.
Certainly, due process will be followed and individuals will
have the right to make their case before the courts.
While the number of cases in which this legislation is
applicable would be fairly small, it sends a clear message that
Canadian citizenship has significant meaning and it is not a tool
to be exploited by disloyal radicals. One recent example is the
case of a Canadian dual national who was allegedly involved in a
bus bombing in Bulgaria that killed five Israeli tourists in 2012.
Under this legislation, this individual's Canadian citizenship
would be revoked.
A recent survey found that 80% of Canadians agree with
stripping dual citizens of their Canadian citizenship if they commit
terrorist acts. Passage of this Bill will bring Canada in line with
other countries such as Australia, France, the United Kingdom,
the Netherlands and the United States who already have similar
policies in place. In fact, Canada is actually one of the only developed
countries that does not already have this power.
Mr. Shory's Bill will also enable permanent residents who commit
to serving three years in the Canadian Forces to become citizens in
two years instead of three, thereby enhancing the size and diversity
of our armed forces".
Contd. from Page 1
Another consumer trend is "the rising power of Asian
and South Asian consumers." Over the next 10 years,
approximately 70% of all growth in Canadian consumer
spending will come from these groups, he says. This is likely
to spur the growth of large-format ethnic grocery stores,
which are increasingly competing for market share with
established grocers.
Mr. Caicco highlights several other market events that
will test Canadian retailers in the coming years.
"It has been a largely peaceful and prosperous decade
for Canadian retailers. But that type of environment
inevitably invites disruption. Disruption has certainly
arrived," says Mr. Caicco.
"The most notable challenge is the arrival of a number
of 'strangers' to the Canadian retail scene. Target is the
obvious entrant," he says. Others include Nordstrom and
international specialty retailers. Increased development of
brand-focused clearance outlets and Walmart's acquisition
of 39 former Zeller's stores will also increase competition.
These developments "will test the resolve and resiliency
of Canadian retailers, large and small" for the next few years,
says Mr. Caicco. On the flip side, the competition will "make
it a good time to be a consumer as choices will continue to
expand and prices will come down."
Other market trends that Mr. Caicco says will shape
retail industry include:
" Loyalty Programs: "These types of programs are
usually funded by suppliers," notes Mr. Caicco.
"Unfortunately, dollars allocated to support these new
programs are generally shifted from more focused
promotional and pricing programs."
" E-commerce: Retail e-sales are a fraction of the
merchandise market in Canada but that could soon change,
says Mr. Caicco. Investments by Amazon, Walmart and
others could "see sales in e-commerce grow to $50 billion in
10 years," he says. However, with online sales growth, there's
the question "about what happens to all that square footage"
currently occupied by retailers.
" Real Estate: While commercial real estate space is
"growing rapidly in Canada," Mr. Caicco notes that "a large
number of Canadian retailers probably have too much space
and would happily re-purpose millions of square feet. This
certainly opens the door, and gives plenty of options, for
multinational merchants or brands looking for an inexpensive
foothold in Canada."
" The Loonie: This year's weaker Canadian dollar is
increasing purchasing costs on goods bought in U.S. dollars.
In a highly competitive market, "it is much more difficult to
turn cost increases into price increases," says Mr. Caicco,
adding that this will put gross margins under pressure.
" Consolidation: "Eroding margins will cause
traditional domestic retailers to consider consolidation," says
Mr. Caicco. "Although Canada is already a heavily
consolidated market, there are possibilities for more." Possible
targets for acquisition are: ethnic grocers and small regional
grocers; drugstore operators suffering under the drug reform
headwinds; chains of domestic apparel retailers; and retailers
sitting on below-market leases.

UN CALLS CANADA'S PULLOUT
FROM DROUGHT FIGHTING
CONVENTION 'REGRETTABLE'
The United Nations has responded to Canada's withdrawal
from a UN convention that fights the spread of droughts,
calling the pullout "regrettable." Prime Minister Stephen
Harper has said Canada was withdrawing from the United
Nations Convention to Combat Desertification because the
program has proven too bureaucratic. He has said less than
one-fifth of the $350,000 Canada contributes to the
convention goes to programming, while Foreign Affairs
Minister John Baird called the entire process a "talkfest''
that does a disservice to Canadian taxpayers. But in a press
release issued on Friday, the convention secretariat based
on Bonn, Germany, said the convention is the only legally
binding instrument addressing desertification and drought
and pointed out that Canada itself is "frequently subjected
to drought." The UN body also said the convention is
"stronger that ever before" making Canada's decision to
withdraw from it "all the more regrettable."
The UNCCD says Canada is believed to have played a
significant role in the convention's progress and added that
it believed Canada would "seize every opportunity to sustain
the implementations of the convention for the good of
present and future generations."

ONTARIO BEING MILKED FOR
$11 BILLION, ACCORDING TO
PUBLIC POLICY GROUP
O
ntario readers looking to
complain about their
province's station in the
country might enjoy this little
piece of news released today,
until they realize it means money
from their pockets. According to
a new study, the federal
government milks $11 billion
more out of the province every
year than it returns in funding.
The study, entitled "Filling the
Gap," was done by the
University of Toronto's Mowat
Centre, a public policy think
tank. That gap is so compelling
because, well, because it is huge.
But also because Ontario is
facing an $11.9-billion deficit
this year. Every time the amount

STATEMENT BY MAYOR
FENNELL ON EASTER
“On behalf of the people of
Brampton, I join Brampton’s
Christian community, and all
Bramptonians, observing Easter.
“During the Easter season,
Christians from around the
world celebrate the resurrection
of Jesus Christ. For many,
Christ’s resurrection symbolizes the eternal life that is
granted to all who believe in Him.
“Here in Brampton, families will gather and attend local church
services, listen as spiritual leaders deliver inspiring sermons,
join in the singing of hymns and personally reflect on this
meaningful and joyous period.
“For these, and so many other reasons, we are thankful to
call Brampton home. It is here in Brampton that men and
women, of all backgrounds and faiths, are free to worship
openly and freely.
"From my family to yours, I wish you a very Happy Easter."

FORMER ALBERTA PREMIER RALPH KLEIN DEAD AT 70
Calgary: Ralph Klein, the rough-edged "King Ralph" who ruled
Canada's energy-producing province of Alber ta from 1992 to 2006
with conservative policies that included deep public spending cuts
and debt reduction, died on Friday, his family said. He was 70.
Klein, a one-time television repor ter who was also mayor of Calgary,
had been suffering from dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and had been out of the public spotlight that he basked
in for much of his adult life. "In his public life, while many will now
debate what he stood for, he himself simply believed that public
service was impor tant, that it need not be complicated, and that it
revolved around people, Klein's wife, Colleen, said in a statement.
Klein was one of Canada's most successful politicians, presiding
over four consecutive majority governments and attracting voters
with an everyman persona, tight-fisted fiscal policy and a propensity to fire sharp-tongued and sometimes off-colour zingers at his
critics. One of Klein's proudest accomplishments as leader of
Alber ta's ruling Progressive Conservative par ty was eliminating
the Western province's public debt in 2004 after deep and often
controversial cuts to healthcare, education, the civil service and
spending on infrastructure.
The cuts, and steadily rising prices for Alber ta's surging oil and
gas production, generated a string of budget surpluses that climbed
into the billions of dollars. In 2005, he used some of the bounty to
send C$400 checks to all Alber tans, in a program nicknamed "Ralph
bucks."
Klein fostered a business-friendly economy by reducing corporate
taxes, luring several major companies to the province to make use
of what Klein called the "Alber ta advantage."
During his premiership, Alber ta's oil sands gained global attention
as the world's third-largest accumulation of crude oil and increasingly impor tant source of U.S. supply.
Klein often grabbed national notoriety, not just for the common touch
that won him popularity with Alber ta voters even as he slashed
public services, but also for frequent jibes at opponents.
Some of his more memorable moments on the public stage included blaming "creeps" and "bums" from Eastern Canada for straining Calgary's public services in the boom years of the early 1980s,
flipping off an environmental protester in front of TV cameras when
he was Alber ta's environment minister and throwing cash at a
homeless man at a shelter while premier.
CHICAGO - When Andrew Wiggins made his official recruiting
visit to Florida State, 16 female students seated cour tside at a
Seminoles game wore "WE WANT WIGGINS" painted in black
across the front of their white T-shir ts.
A cheerleader held a sign that read: "FSU has hotter girls."
When he played a high school game in Georgetown, Ky., more
than 2,000 Kentucky Wildcats fans turned out to watch, chanting "We want Wiggins!" and "Go Big Blue!"
At a tournament in Cincinnati, some 300 high school students
taunted the Canadian basketball phenom with "Over-Rated!"
and "U-S-A!"
For an 18-year-old who's not super fond of the spotlight, there's
no escaping it these days.
"Somebody of his talent, every gym he goes to, somebody's
going to say, 'No. 1 player in the country? You're overrated,'"
said Steve Nash, who knows a bit about life in the spotlight.
Wiggins will be front and centre again Wednesday at Chicago's
United Centre as the brightest young star in a gym full of them
for the 36th Annual McDonald's High School All-American
Game.
Nash has some advice for Wiggins: like it or hate it, he should
embrace the attention.
"Maybe that's his biggest challenge," the two-time NBA MVP
told The Canadian Press. "It's not the players he plays against,
it's not the competitions he's in. It's the never-waning spotlight, and pressure from the outside. I think he has to embrace
that as his greatest competitor at this stage in his career."
A quick peek at his mixtapes — one of which is just shy of a
million views — shows the six-foot-seven shooting guard from
Vaughan, Ont., rarely has competition. He runs faster and jumps
higher. He spins past players on his way to the hoop like he's
matched up against elementary school kids.
"Although unfair and difficult for someone his age, (pressure
and expectations) can push him," said Nash, who's keeping a
close eye on Wiggins' catapulting career.

US sizes up threats as N Korea
vows to strengthen nukes
A file picture shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at a border post this month
WASHINGTON/SEOUL:
North Korea vowed on
Sunday to strengthen its
nuclear weapons, a day after
announcing it is in a “state
of war” with South Korea,
and said it would never
trade its atomic deterrent for
aid. The statement came as
the US said it remained fully
prepared and capable of
protecting the country and
its allies. Tensions have
risen sharply on the
peninsula since the United
Nations tightened sanctions
in response to the North’s
nuclear and missile tests,
and the US and South Korea
launched military drills
south of the border.
“We’ve seen reports of a
new and unconstructive
statement from North Korea.
We take these threats
seriously and remain in
close contact with our
South Korean allies,” said
Caitlin Hayden,
spokesperson of the
National Security Council.
“But, we would also note
that North Korea has a long
history of bellicose rhetoric
and threats.”
On Saturday, the North
declared it was in a “state of
war” with the South and
warned Seoul and
Washington that any
provocation would swiftly
escalate into an all-out
nuclear conflict. One of
North Korea’s top decision
making bodies said on
Sunday that it was setting
guide lines that call nuclear
weapons “the nation’s life”
that won’t betradedeven for
“billions of dollars”. The
statement came after a
plenary meeting of the
central committee of the
ruling Workers’ Party
attended by leader Kim Jong
Un and other officials. The
nuclear armed forces
“should be expanded and
beefed up qualitatively and
quantitatively until the
denuclearisation of the
world is realised”, it said.
US National Security
Council official Hayden said
America was prepared for
any possible threat. “We
continue to take additional
measures against the North
Korean threat, including our
plan to increase the US
ground-based interceptors
and early warning and
tracking radar, and the
signing of the ROKUScounter-provocation
plan,” Hayden said. The
North in April 2009
abandoned six-party talks
offering it economic benefit
sinreturn for
denuclearisation. A year
later, it disclosed the
existence of a uranium
enrichment facility and light
11
water reactor, purportedly to
generate power. Experts said
it could easily be
reconfigured to make fuel
for nuclear weapons.

Mandela spends fourth day

HANNESBURG: Nelson
Mandela remained in hospital
for a fourth day on Sunday
after South African officials
said he was making steady
progress following treatment
for are currence of pneumonia.
The frail 94-year-old, one of
the towering figures of modern history, was admitted late on
Wednesday for his third hospitalisation in four months. Doctors
drained a build-up of fluid, known as a pleural effusion or “water
on the lungs”, that had developed from the lung infection. “This
has resulted in him now being able to breathe without difficulty,”
President Jacob Zuma’s office said.OnSunday, Zuma’s
spokesman said he didn’t have another update on the antiapartheid icon’s health, as he awaited a report from the doctors.
“I have said he is making steady progress,” said Mac Maharaj.
It was unclear how long South Africa’s first black president
would remain hospitalised. His health troubles have triggered
an outpouring of prayers but have also seen South Africans
come to terms with the mortality of the revered leader. THE
NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER’S HEALTH WOES
• It’s the 2nd time this month that he has been hospitalised. The
previous treatment followed a 3-week stay in December for lung
infection and gallstone surgery.
• He was hospitalised in January 2011 in Johannesburg with
respiratory problems. A close friend recently said that Mandela
was suffering from memory lapses.
• He was diagnosed with TB in 1988 during his 27-year jail term
and has had lung problems. He has had treatment for prostate
cancer and suffered stomach ailments.

North Korea.
We take these
threats seriously and

said Caitlin Hayden,
spokesperson of the

WASHINGTON: The much-sought H-1B work visas
could be decided through lottery this year, industry
experts and officials feel, based on initial feedback
from companies, as the US starts accepting
applications from today.
If it happens it will be the first time since 2008 that
the fate of thousands of applications for H-1B visas are
decided by a computerised draw of lots.
Even the United States Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) said it expects the cap for H-1B visas
to be filled in the first five days itself. According to
Congressional approved mandate, USCIS can reward a
maximum of 65,000 H-1B visas for the fiscal year 2014
beginning October 1, 2013.
In addition, the USCIS can also reward 20,000 H-1B
visas for those having masters or higher degree from
US academic institutions. This limit on H-1B visas has
been in place for more than two decades now.

Freddie Mercury sneaked Diana
into gay bar dressed as man
LONDON: Queen singer Freddie Mercury disguised Princess Diana
as a male model and smuggled her into a notorious gay bar, according
to a memoir serialised in The Sunday Times. Comedian Cleo Rocos
describes in her book The Power of Positive Drinking how she,
Mercury and fellow comedian Kenny Everett dressed Diana in an
army jacket, cap and sunglasses for a night out at the Royal Vauxhall
Tavern, south London, in the late 1980s. “When we walked in... we
felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at
any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of
disappeared. But she loved it,” said Rocos, who co-starred in
Everett's television show. She said she did not know whether Diana
was propositioned in the bar in her guise as a male model, but added,
“She did look like a beautiful young man.” The presence of Mercury,
Everett and Rocos diverted revellers’ attention and Diana was able
to order drinks undetected, Rocos recalled. Diana, the ex-wife of heir
to the British throne Prince Charles, lived under the glare of the
paparazzi and died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, pursued by
photographers. Mercury, loved for his spellbinding live performances
and enduring Queen hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, died in
1991 aged 45 of an AIDS-related illness.
Suicide bomber kills 7

BARD, THE TAX DODGER?
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, who wrote some of the world’s greatest
plays, evaded tax and illegally hoarded food during shortages so he
could sell it at inflated prices, a study has claimed. He was repeatedly
prosecuted and fined for stockpiling food, and threatened with jail
for failing to pay his taxes, The Sunday Times reported. Aberystwyth
University academics say he retired in 1613 as the largest property
owner in his hometown. “There was another side to Shakespeare
besides the brilliant playwright — as a ruthless businessman who
did all he could to avoid taxes, maximise profits at others’ expense —
while also writing plays about their plight,” a researcher said.
11 killed in flash floods in Mauritius capital
IN IRAQ
TIKRIT, Iraq: A suicide bomber blew up a tanker truck at police
headquarters in the Iraqi city of Tikrit on Monday, killing seven
people and wounding 11, police and medics said.
Most of the casualties in the 8:40 am (0540 GMT) attack in the
city, which was the hometown of executed dictator Saddam
Hussein and remains a focus for insurgents, were police, the
sources said.
MAURITIUS: Officials say flash floods, triggered by climate
change killed at least 11 people in the capital of the Indian ocean
island of Mauritius.
Officials also said that most victims drowned in river water that
swiftly rose on Saturday in a pedestrian underpass and an
underground car park.
Torrential downpours slammed Port Louis. The meteorological
office reported that 152mm (6 inches) of rain had fallen in less
than an hour. It warned that there could be more storms.
Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared Monday, a
day of mourning. On the national radio on Sunday, he blamed
climate change for the floods. He also said there was heavy
property damage.
National TV showed people clinging to each other as they waded
through hip-high water in a central street. L'Express newspaper
showed cars floating away.

LIKE WORMS CRAWLING OUT OF THE WOODWORKS,
FAR-RIGHT LEADERS OF THE HINDUTVA PANTHEON
ARE STEPPING INTO THE LIMELIGHT TO CLAIM THE
ATTENTION THAT HAS LONG BEEN DENIED THEM. EVIDENTLY THEY HAVE BEEN ENTHUSED BY THE PERCEPTION THAT THE STEADY ASCENDANCE IN THE POLITICAL
FORTUNES OF GUJARAT CHIEF MINISTER NARENDRA
MODI, VALORISED BY HIS FAITHFUL FLOCK FOLLOWERS
AS THE 'HINDU HRIDAY SAMRAT', HAS OPENED UP THE
POLITICAL SPACE FOR THEM TO STRUT THEIR STUFF
hus, for instance, Vishwa
Hindu Parishad leader
Praveen Togadia, whose
political influence had been cut
to size in an earlier time, is back
on the beat with his polarising
communal speeches and outright
hate-mongering - which echo
similar venomous hate speeches
by the Majlis-e-Ittehadul
Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin
Owaisi. In early February, for
instance, Togadia responded to
Owaisi's boast (about what
Muslims could to Hindus if the
police across India stood down)
with a macabre celebration of the
disproportionately high Muslim
mortality rates from riots in
India, including the Gujarat riots
of 2002, whenever the law and
order machinery had in fact
stood down. Although it was
packaged as a "lesson in
history", it was in fact an
unsubtle threat to the Muslim
community and a dog-whistle
intended to rouse the basest
passions in Hindutva warriors.
On Sunday, Togadia was on
stage at the 'Hindu Sangam' with
similar
pronouncements
intended to promote his
advocacy of exclusivist, Hindusupremacist sentiments - to the
point of prophesying a 'Hindu
state' in Gujarat by 2015.
Togadia also gave voice to "our
dream" of building a Ram temple
at Ayodhya at the site where the
Babri Masjid stood. That dream,
he added, would be realized only
when "we become Hindus, not
only by our behavior, but with
our practices and awareness".
At that same platform, RSS chief
Mohan Bhagwat too spoke of
building a "glorious" Ram temple
at Ayodhya, and of a fanciful
Hindu renaissance of sorts that
would "lead the world". A
section of VHP functionaries are
at a loss to explain what
prompted Togadia to make this
claim. Senior Gujarat BJP leaders
have already expressed disdain over
this rhetoric, which has failed to
arouse any passion even among
Sangh Parivar believers and has
instead only increased anxieties in
the state's Muslim community.
More than anyone else, Togadia
himself should be acutely aware
of his own and the VHP's near
complete irrelevance in Gujarat
today. This has been reflected
during the last two assembly
elections that Narendra Modi
won. The VHP's cadre base has
shrunk and Togadia is struggling
hard to stay afloat in the state.
What he now claims would be a
Herculean task for him to
accomplish - to develop a VHP
presence in all 18,000 villages of
Gujarat over the next two years.
But then, nobody is going to
verify his claims. Togadia's brand
of extreme right-wing politics has
been negated by the people at
large in the state he belongs to,
and even within the Sangh
Parivar, rational leaders see him
more as baggage than anything
else.
Modi's stated concept of
secularism, "India First", comes
in direct conflict with Togadia's
Hindutva fancies. But that does
not mean Togadia can't cause
damage. To make his Hindu state
claims, Togadia chose a venue
near Ahmedabad in the vicinity
of Modi's home constituency, a
move that could embarrass Modi
and raise fresh questions on
how to deal with Hindu
hardliners.
In the 2012 assembly elections,
those who travelled across
Gujarat noted that a substantial
segment of the VHP had pitted
itself against Narendra Modi and
the BJP. Over three months, the
outfit's leaders and workers
sweated it out to damage Modi
and boost whatever negligible
prospects Keshubhai Patel and
Gordhan Zadaphia's Gujarat
Parivartan Party (GPP) had
against the BJP strongman. They
knew that it was not possible for
the Congress and the GPP to
defeat Modi, so the purpose was
to portray Modi as leading a
divided Parivar in Gujarat and
somehow reduce his victory
margin in terms of seats won.
The idea was to scuttle his
national ambitions.
To the VHP's dismay however,
the outfit's campaign against
Modi ended up helping him
correct his image outside Gujarat
and even with some segments of
the minorities. In the elections,
it won him support from a large
number of people for whom
good governance and the
availability of basic amenities
was far more important than the
worn out rhetoric of the VHP.
Zadaphia and his whole team
lost the elections. Keshubhai
Patel could win his seat but in
the next elections there may be
no GPP. Its symbol, the cricket
bat, has been frozen because the
party, even with the vociferous
support of the VHP, did not get
the required percentage of votes
in the state assembly to be
recognised as a regional party.
The slow, but visible, tilt of of
some segments of Muslims in
Gujarat towards Modi coincides
with marginalisation of the VHP
in the state. In the run-up to the
assembly elections, one could
sense that the complete
banishment of the rowdy elements
of the VHP-Bajrang Dal to the
fringes came as a huge relief to
the Muslim community. Modi may
have ensured this for his own
convenience, but he took the bull
by the horns and won. His win
attracted the ire of sections within
the Sangh Parivar, but its default
beneficiaries were people from the
minority community.
A number of VHP activists figured
in around 200 pronounced
convictions in post-Godhra riot
cases. More importantly, former
minister Maya Kodnani's
conviction gave people a feeling
that justice finally prevailed, even
if it may not have brought
complete closure to those directly
affected. This was precisely the
reason why Togadia kept making
adverse references to Modi, albeit
without naming him, on the
sidelines of the Kumbh conclave
of the VHP in Allahabad.
Togadia's conflict with Modi is
both political and personal. In the
2007 assembly election, Togadia
was forced to stay out of Gujarat,
and the VHP's firebrand is
perturbed by the loss of clout in
his own state. But Modi can't
afford to let Togadia reclaim lost
ground.
Despite his image as a hardliner,
Modi has never flaunted his
Hindutva credentials - in fact, it is
inbuilt in his persona. But after the
2002 elections, he has consciously
cultivated the image of a strong
development-oriented
administrator. The rise of Togadia
in the pre-2002 period was Modi's
loss. But after 2002, it has been
the reverse.
Modi's stakes are much higher
now. Togadia's claims on creating
a Hindu state in Gujarat is intended
to damage Modi. That he made the
claim in the presence of RSS chief
Mohan Bhagwat should worry
Modi.
Other appointments made by BJP
president Rajnath Singh-including
the controversial appointment of
Modi's political lieutenant Amit
Shah-and the exclusion of some
of the more personable leaders
(who don't, however, have a
political mooring or the backing of
the RSS) make for bad political
optics for a party that wishes to
reach beyond its hardcore support
base.
The fact that the far right has found
its voice about now is more than a
little ironic because it comes at
precisely the moment when the
BJP is looking to harness the mass
appeal that Modi has generated
in recent years by showcasing his
developmental work in Gujarat and
playing down its hardline
Hindutva identity. In fact, Modi's
three-time electoral success in
Gujarat has come on the strength
of his having effectively sidelined
the loony far right, as epitomised
by leaders like Togadia, and having
carved out an element of political
autonomy from the mothership
RSS.
As this narrative that activist and
media commentator Madhu
Kishwar reports on, citing one of
the interlocutors at a meeting in
London in 2003 between Modi
and Muslim leaders, Modi was
cramped for political space by the
VHP -- and, in particular, the fear
that the "VHP types will wipe me
13
out".
Yet, according to this narrative,
Modi did offer redress and the
promise of justice to Muslim
leaders,
which
evidently
persuaded
them
of
the
genuineness of his intent, despite
all the negative portrayals in the
media surrounding the 2002 riots.
All that political goodwill will be
in serious jeopardy if the
perception gains ground that
Modi's ascent on the national
stage is akin to the Trojan horse
that assists the ultra-right to
clamber back onto the
national stage, in much the
same way that they did at the
height of the Ram temple
campaign in the late 1980s
and early 1990s.
The revived chatter from the
far-right Hindutva groupings
also has the potential to interfere
with the political message that
Modi has fashioned over the
past decade to his advantage,
which rests on a popular appeal
beyond
the
traditional
constituencies of the BJP. These
new constituencies, at the centre
of the political spectrum, are drawn
by the developmental discourse
that Modi purveys, which offers a
sharp contrast to the UPA
government's economic narrative,
which rests on entitlements and
pandering to rent-seeking
behavior.
As historian Harbans Mukhia
points out, the perception that
playing the Hindutva card in
general-and the Ram temple
campaign-has earned huge
dividends for the BJP is
something of a myth. Since the
demolition of the Babri Masjid,
Mukhia points out, the BJP has
never returned to power in
Uttar Pradesh, except, briefly,
as a junior partner of the
Bahujan Samaj Party. Elsewhere
across the Hindi belt too, which
is considered the support base
of the BJP, the party has fared
badly since 1992. And even its
brief stint in power as the head
of a coalition-between 1998
and 2004-was facilitated by
the deliberate downplaying
of
hot-button
issues,
including the Ram temple
campaign at Ayodhya.

GTA Commercial REALTORS Report Commercial Market Figures
Toronto: Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) Commercial Division
Members reported almost 392,000 square feet of leased industrial,
commercial/retail and office space through the TorontoMLS system in
January of 2013. This result, for properties sold on a per square foot net
basis and for which pricing was disclosed at time of reporting, was
down by approximately 15 per cent in comparison to January 2012.
More than 75 per cent of space leased in January involved industrial
properties. The amount of leased industrial space was down by close
to 25 per cent compared to January 2012. The average lease rate was
$5.25 per square foot net. This average rate represented an 11 per cent
increase compared to January 2012.
“A

headwinds for
the industrial
sector. However,
the consensus
outlook is for

economic growth
in 2013 in
Canada. It is felt
that improving

conditions will

With
this
outlook in mind,
it is likely that
some industrial
firms who put
real
estate
investment on
hold will once
again become
active in the
market,” said
T R E B
Commercial
Division Chair
Cynthia Lai.
There were a combined 40 industrial, commercial/retail and office
transactions in January – down from 58 sales in January 2012. The
change in the average selling price per square foot was mixed and
remained somewhat volatile on a year-over-year basis due to changes
in the type, size and location of properties sold in January 2013
versus January 2012.
“The large annual rate of price growth for industrial properties
was due to the fact that no property larger than 50,000 square feet
sold this past January versus four such transactions in January
2012. Larger properties generally sell at a lower price per square
foot,” said Lai.
“In the office market, the overall average selling price for January
was up substantially over last year because the geographic breakdown
of sales changed. This year there were more office transactions in the
City of Toronto. All else being equal, office selling prices in the City of
Toronto are higher compared to surrounding regions,”

A
amir Khan, who played a cop struggling to cope with the
death of his young son in Talaash, says the film was
"emotionally exhaustive".
"The role of Talaash was tough. The loss of the son in the film
was emotionally exhausting. I had to start shooting thinking
something really traumatic
as that would set my mood," Aamir told reporters today at an
event organised by Microsoft India to felicitate winners of Talaash
contest.
Aamir said he had to go deep into the "space of loss" to step
into the shoes of his character on the screen. Talaash: The Answer
Lies Within was a mystery film directed by Reema Kagti and produced
by Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions, starring Aamir,
Rani Mukerji, and Kareena Kapoor in the lead.
On often being dubbed as a "perfectionist" actor, Aamir said he
disagreed with the tag. "I don't think I am perfectionist. I don't think
there is any such thing in the creative business. I don't consider
myself perfectionist," the actor said, adding that he gives his best
when it comes to his characters.
"I leave no stone unturned for any of my films," he added.
Aamir said he did not think much about being successful but enjoys
doing his work.
"I don't know why I am successful so far. I don't think about it.
I just enjoy my work and give my best. I want to surprise and challenge
myself. I want to give audience something new every time," he said.
Aamir, known for experimenting with his looks, said he liked his getup in films 'Mangal Pandey' and 'Ghajini'.

Only courageous can tolerate Sajid's 'Himmatwala'

Chopra, Jaideep Ahlawat
These days, in the absence of innovative scripts, novel ideas and
captivating plots, some of our Bollywood biggies seems to be left
with no other choice except taking a sousing in the reservoir of tried
and tested scripts. Be it Southern blockbusters or yesteryear cine
delights, everything is emerging as too lucrative for tinsel town cine
sorcerers who don't even mind going retro when it comes to movie
making. So is the case with Sajjid Khan's over hyped "official remake"
of 80s cine cantata "Himmatwala", and over hyped because before
the release, Sajjid was seen averring about refunding money, if
somebody finds entertainment missing in the movie. Before going ahead
with the post-mortem of the this official remake from the cine lab of Sajid, I
take it as my moral responsibility to apprise the masses about the fact, that
80's "Himmatwala" featuring Jeetender, Sri Devi, Amjad Khan and Kadar
Khan was a trendsetter movie of Indian cine history, which thoroughly
invoked the trend of remaking the southern cine cantatas in Bollywood.
Anyhow, coming back to this over hyped cine delight, on it's opening,
Himmatwala could only succeed in inviting the foot fall of mere 3-7 percent
of cine buffs to the multiplex.
Synopsis
With almost a similar premise and a few new cinematic patches, "Himmatwala"
narrates the story of a son, who returns to his native village to avenge the
injustice done to his father by a village land lord by wrongly framing him in
a robbery.
Story: As the story takes off, Ravi (Ajay) returns to his native village Ramnagar,
with an idea of avenging the injustice done to his family by village landlord,
Sher Singh (Mahesh Manjerekar), who years back accused his father of
robbery and post which Ravi's entire family straggles and slips in to the
marshes of hardships. On reaching his village Ravi finds that his mother and
sister whom he assumed to be dead are still alive and are leading a very
wretched life on the village outskirts. On knowing this, Ravi meet them and
bring them back to their house in village, where he has a rendezvous with
Sher Singh's harlequin loyalist, Narayandass (Presh Rawal) who
forewarn Ravi about the dire consequences, but ends up being at
the receiving end of Ravi's blows. As the frames roll ahead steps in
finicky daughter of Sher Singh, Rekha (Tamanna Bhatia), who too didn't
have a very pleasing first meeting with Ravi. Soon after this, oblivious about

Ravi's background, Sher Singh himself steps into the arena and comes

Script
Undoubtedly, having a ready made script in ones hands while making a
remake of an already hit cine cantata is a sort of win-win situation for the cine
framers, but at the same time task becomes a bit steep too, because with a tag
of remake pasted over it intrusion of comparison is quite obvious. With
gallons of hope knitted around "Himmatwala", Sajjid tried to pay a supreme
tribute to the master piece, but actually ends up offering tons of squirming
and jading to the cine buffs by his irksome storytelling. Although Sajjid tried
to do some patch work on the original premise while penning down,
Himmatwala, but unfortunately all his efforts went futile. Sans any captivating
component and innovative t h o u g h t p r o c e s s b e h i n d i t s s c r i p t
"Himmatwala" is too monotonous to tolerate. Be it intensity

department "Himmatwala" thoroughly lacks captivation.

THANKS TO HER MOM
Actress Jennifer
Lawrence, who had an
"imaginary future" as a
soccer mum, says her
mother is instrumental in
making her a full-fledged

A Los Angeles federal judge
tentatively dismissed the

Friday, in which writer

Jolie of copying his 2007
book The Soul Shattering
for her film, In the Land of
Blood and Honey. Braddock
claimed Jolie's romantic flick
about love that flourished
between a Serbian soldier and a
Bosnian woman during war was
based partly on his book. The

while both the book and movie
are about war romances, the
two are not "substantially"

happy with my life and I didn't know
if I wanted it to change. I've always
had this imaginary future where I
would be a soccer mum that drove a
mini-van and my kids would be
normal." "That just didn't fit with
taking on a giant franchise. So, I took
three days to decide, and each day
was a different answer," Fabulous
magazine quoted Lawrence as
saying. The 22-year-old says her
mother advised her to sign "Hunger

my mum. I'd only really done indie

time people ask you why you don't

Michelle Obama hosting party
for cast of 42 at White House
First lady Michelle Obama is hosting a White House event for the cast and crew of upcoming
flick '42' on Tuesday, which will include actor Harrison Ford and director Brian Helgeland.
The movie tells the life story of Jackie Robinson, who in 1947 became
the first African American to play Major League Baseball.
Ford plays his manager and Chadwick Boseman plays Robinson in
the film, due in theaters April 12.
Robinson's widow, Rachel, will also attend the White House event,
the Politico reported.
Some 80 high school and college students from across the country
have been invited to the event, which will include a discussion
about the movie, Jackie Robinson and the inspirational themes from
his life, the White House said.
The event follows a similar one earlier this year, when Obama hosted
the cast and crew of Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Growing up I was pretty
boring: Mia Wasikowska
The 23-year-old insists
she never set herself apart
from the crowd when she
was younger and was
always happy to fit in with
her peers. "Growing up I
was pretty boring, I was
more of a follower than a
leader; I didn't like
showing off,"
femalefirst.co.uk quoted
Wasikowska as saying.
The actress who began
her film career aged just 15
only fell into acting when
she suffered an injury that
called a halt to her main
passion, dance. "I was
very shy and spent all my
time dancing. I used to
dance up to 35 hours a
week; it was the place
where I found passion,
friendship and
experiences. Acting
replaced dancing when I
had to quit for a foot
injury," she added..
The "Jane Eyre" star also
admitted she likes knitting. "I
love knitting. Oops, maybe I
shouldn't have said that, it's
not good for my image,".she
added.

The 67-year-old actress, who had an affair with Sean Connery
during the making of the movie, said that she had to be rescued
by divers during a scene when her character Plenty O'Toole was
drowned in a swimming pool, the Daily Express reported. Wood
said that in the film she was supposed to die by having her

She said that the longer she stayed in, the block of cement kept
moving, and pretty soon she couldn't reach up for the rope to
pull her nose and mouth free to breathe, so the divers had to

Is SRK looking for another PC?
Sources say Shah Rukh Khan has been
enquiring about Parineeti Chopra. Is a
fresh pairing on the cards?
With her debut film Ishaqzaade, Parineeti Chopra won a National
Award Special Jury mention. And naturally, industry bigwigs have
sat up and taken note. Sources say that Shah Rukh Khan has been
asking around about Parineeti prompting rumours that he might
want to cast her in one of his upcoming projects.
A source says, `SRK is currently shooting in Wai and has been all
praises for Parineeti. He has been asking about the kind of projects
she has on hand right now. He was also heard discussing about her
recent achievements. He seems to be taking a keen interest in her.`
Another insider says, `With her National Award success, it is possible
that SRK might want to do a film with her. Only that could explain his
sudden interest in her.`
It's Over! Jacqueline Fernandez to
DUMP SAJID KHAN?
Though they prefer to be tightlipped, buzz is that Jacqueline
Fernandez is feeling stifled in her
relationship with director Sajid
Khan. The actress is apparently
keen to move away and
concentrate on her film career.
There has been speculation
about their state of affairs for a
while now. There has also been
intermittent buzz about their on/
off relationship. But sources
now state that Jacqueline has
been telling those close to her
that she wants to step away but
on a cordial note. Says a source,
`What is making it difficult for her
is that both she and Sajid now
have a circle of common friends.
In fact her business matters are
also looked after by a person who
Sajid recommended!` Adds the
source, `She is in no mood to settle
down anytime in the near future.
Last October, there was buzz that
Sajid had met Jacqueline's parents
and marriage was on their minds.
But she does not want to tie the
knot and instead is keen to make a
mark in B-Town.` Last year, the
couple was often spotted together
at events and bashes. However
since the start of 2013, the duo
were seen together only in early
January at the premiere of buddy
Riteish Deshmukh's Marathi film
Balak Palak. Though Sajid has
been busy with his upcoming film
Himmatwala, they seemed to have
been maintaining a low-profile as
a couple of late. The source adds,
`In the past there were issues
when Sajid became protective
about Jacqueline telling her what
films she should be a part of and
not.

S
anjay Dutt's impending

considerable strain on
his many business interests.
One of them is the Super Fight

along with Raj Kundra in 2012.
Buzz is, Venky's Nutrition, one
of the leading sponsors for the
League, has failed to clear its
dues to the company. The deal
between Dutt and Kundra's
venture and Venky's venture
was valid for the first three
events, and sealed between Rs
7 and 8 crore, say sources close
to the franchise. Given that
Dutt and Venky's owner Balaji

made matters a bit tricky. A
source close to the league told
TOI, "Bala is close to Sanjay,
who introduced him to Kundra.
In fact, it was Dutt who
suggested getting Venky on
board as a sponsor and an
agreement
was
signed
between them for the first three

after Venky's allegedly failed to
pay the sponsorship money,
the SFL team sent him gentle
reminders. He was never really
put under any kind of pressure
to clear the dues, given his
proximity to Sanjay, who
continued to vouch for his
friend's commitment to the

'Excited to be back for IPL' - Ponting
M
umbai Indians captain
Ricky Ponting has
said he is excited to be
back for the IPL after a gap of
five years. His retirement from
international cricket, he said, has
allowed him to focus on
domestic leagues such as the IPL
and the ones that follow.
"I am very excited to be back
in IPL," Ponting said. "The way
things have worked out - with
my retirement from international
cricket and finishing off the
domestic season for Tasmania
and playing well - they have
given me the opportunity to be

"The reason I did not come

I had too much international

After the IPL ends in May,

Ponting said his experience

has had "great battles" over the

"I have got a really good
idea of what makes good teams

they are all the things I will be
bringing to the table in Mumbai.
To think that I will be playing
alongside Sachin Tendulkar and
Harbhajan Singh, some of the
guys I have had great battles
over the years, and some of the
young local Indian talent I have
come across in the last couple of

All teams have to announce
their preliminary squad for the
tournament before April 6.
Squad:

Mohammad Hafeez, Imran
Farhat, Ahmed Shehzad,
Misbah-ul-Haq, Haris Sohail,
Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal,
Shoaib Malik, Umer Amin,
Sri Lanka 198 for 5 (Kusal Perera 64, Mendis
37) beat Bangladesh 181 for 7 (Ashraful 43,
Mushfiqur 39, Thisara Perera 2-25) by 17 runs
Indians have a pretty proud
tradition in IPL of finishing up the
top and being in the semi-finals,"
Ponting said. "We obviously
haven't won the tournament yet
but hopefully this year is our year."
Younis Khan left out of Champions Trophy squad
he limited-overs career
of Younis Khan, the
senior
Pakistan
batsman, hangs in the balance
after he was left out of a 30man squad for the Champions
Trophy to be held in June. The
Pakistan board announced the
pool of players unexpectedly
early, and there had been
speculation over Younis' future
after a poor one-day series in
South Africa earlier this month.
Younis, 35, was among several
Pakistan
batsmen
who
floundered in the series which
South Africa won 3-2. Younis
collected 116 ODIs runs at
23.20 as Pakistan's fragile
batting struggled through
much of the tour. He has had a
difficult ODI run in recent years
- his last century came as long
back in 2008, and in three of
the previous four years he has
averaged less than 25.
The other major exclusion from
the squad was of 20-year-old
left-arm spinner Raza Hasan,
who is looking to make his
comeback after suffering a
spine injury last December.
Hasan had made an impact
during the World Twenty20
last year, playing in four
matches in that campaign.

Kusal Perera hammered 64 off 44 as Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh
by 17 runs in the one-off Twenty20 in Pallekele.
A marauding Kusal Perera set the platform for Sri Lanka's
198 for 5, which proved 17 runs too many for the valiant
Bangladesh batsmen, in the one-off Twenty20 in Pallekele.
His 64 from 44 balls saw Sri Lanka travel at nearly 11-an
over during the Powerplay, before their middle-order
allrounders exploited generous bowling to close the innings
at a gallop. Though three Bangladesh batsmen threatened
to rally a forceful response, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur
Rahim and Mahmudullah all fell before their side could
mount a serious challenge.???
Kusal's onslaught began from the second delivery which
he whipped aerially off his pads behind square, before he
picked up the fifth ball and deposited it in the stands and
then blasted the next behind point for four. Like a young
Sanath Jayasuriya with a ballet coach, Kusal flitted about
the crease - venturing swiftly out of it on occasion - before
sending the ball hur tling, with a rapid swing of the blade.
At 25 for no loss at the end of the second over, Mushfiqur
introduced Sohag Gazi to change the pace of the game, but
Kusal welcomed him into the attack with a mighty slogswept six over cow corner. When Abdur Razzak came on to
bowl, he was spared first ball, but slammed into the grass
bank behind deep midwicket next delivery.
The fours flowed too: over cover, through point, behind
square on the leg side - five in total, to go with four sixes.
Kusal reined in the big shots when the field spread, rotating
the strike first with Dinesh Chandimal, then Lahiru
Thirimanne, and the first shot he mishit in the game was
the one that brought his demise. He top-edged a cut shot off
Mahmudullah, three balls after having sent him high over
deep midwicket. When he depar ted at 100 for 4 after 12
overs, only a middle-order collapse would have restricted
Sri Lanka to an average total, and the Bangladesh bowlers'
generosity ensured that would not eventuate.
??But despite the tall Sri Lanka total, Bangladesh batted so
well, they might justly feel aggrieved at the officiating. The
match was marred by contentious decisions - at least two
of which had the potential to change the game's narrative
dramatically. The clearest of these was Ashraful's lbw, which
came off a thigh-high Thisara Perera full toss. Ashraful had
struck two sixes and a four off the three previous deliveries, signalling an imminent sustained barrage, but it was
cut shor t when the umpire ruled him out despite the ball
having struck his thigh pad outside the line of the stumps.
Earlier, debutant Shamsur Rahman had been given out to
his first ball in international cricket, after being struck above
the knee roll, some way outside the popping crease. The
first ball of the match, however, had been a close call for
Kusal, and two more marginal decisions in Sri Lanka's innings went the hosts' way.
???Bangladesh began their innings more slowly than Sri
Lanka, hitting only 45 from their Powerplay overs, for the
loss of Shamsur and Jahurul Islam. When Ashraful fell in
the seventh over, Mushfiqur assumed the aggressor's role,
but soon after, Mahmudullah also began scoring quickly.
Mushfiqur first struck two fours in three balls off Sachithra
Senanayake, before lifting a low full toss from Shaminda
Eranga over the long-on fence two overs later. Angelo Perera
had not had a chance to bat on debut, but his par t-time leftarm spin disappeared for 17 off Mushfiqur's blade in the
13th over, to complete a six-over stretch that saw Bangladesh
maul 72.
??But in two balls in the fifteenth over, Bangladesh lost both
set batsman, and with them, their hopes of a triumphant
end to the tour. Mushfiqur top edged a gentle full toss
from Senanayake to deep square leg, and next ball, a
mix-up while attempting a third ended with both batsmen stranded mid-pitch, and Mahmudullah eventually
given out, having not crossed his par tner. With six wickets down, Mominul Haque then faced a required runrate of 12 with five wickets to go and the tail for company. He finished unbeaten on 26 from 16, having hit
three boundaries that made the end result perhaps seem
closer than it was.
