Toslink Optical cables must be connected from the ADAT Out ports of the Pulsar card to the ADAT In ports of the 328 and vice versa. Coaxial digital S/PDIF cables must also be connected from the Pulsar S/PDIF output to the 328 S/PDIF input and vice versa. 328 ADAT Out 2 Î Pulsar ADAT In 2 Pulsar S/PDIF Out Î 328 S/PDIF In Pulsar ADAT Out 2 Î 328 ADAT In 2 328 S/PDIF Out Î Pulsar S/PDIF In 328 ADAT Out 1 Î Pulsar ADAT In 1 Pulsar ADAT Out 1 Î 328 ADAT In 1 The ADAT connections allow digital transfer of either direct outputs for input channels 1-16 to the Pulsar card, or the Digital 328’s 8 Group outputs. The S/PDIF output from the console can be assigned to either the Mix output or 1 of 3 stereo auxilliary outputs. The 328 S/PDIF Input can be configured to be a digital Stereo Input or as a digital 2 Track Return. Other Connections Besides the audio connections, the Pulsar enables the 328 MIDI In and Out to be connected to the PC for automation of the 328 via software sequencers. * 328 Wordclock out Î Pulsar Wordclock In (Optional) * If several devices in the studio require wordclock synchronization, the optional wordclock syncplate for the Pulsar can be fitted. This should be connected to the 328 wordclock output with a BNC wordclock cable. Spirit Digital 328 v2 2 Pulsar MIDI Out Î 328 MIDI In 328 MIDI Out Î Pulsar MIDI In Digital 328 Setup 2 To configure the Digital 328 as the wordclock master, enter the 328 Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the ‘Clock Source Sel’ menu is highlighted, and press <ENTER>. Here, either the internal 44.1kHz clock or the internal 48kHz clock must be selected, depending on the sampling rate at which work is to be done. Press <ENTER> to set the sample rate and <MENU> to return to the menu pages. <Wordclock Src.> Internal:44.1kHz or <Wordclock Src.> Internal:48.0kHz Tape Ports To ensure that the Digital 328 Tape Ports are set to ADAT to work with the Pulsar, enter the 328 Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the ‘Tape Port Select’ menu is highlighted. Press <ENTER> and keep pressing the Up cursor arrow until the ‘<Tape Ch17-24 >’ menu page is displayed. Using the encoder, set the Bank Source to ADAT. Press the Down cursor arrow once, to set the wordlength. The Pulsar is capable of 24-bit recording, and so for optimum results, 24-bit wordlength can be selected here. If your audio sequencer software does not allow 24-bit recording, 20-bit or 16-bit should be selected. The sequencer manuals should be consulted for further information. The wordlength is set on the 328 with the encoder. Press <ENTER> to set the wordlength and <MENU> to return to the menu pages. <Tape Ch17->24 > Bank Source:ADAT <Tape Ch17->24 > Wordlength: 24 Creamware Pulsar II Setup Guide 3 <Tape Ch25->32 > Bank Source:ADAT <Tape Ch25->32 > Wordlength: 24 S/PDIF Input The 328 S/PDIF input can be routed to any one of the following inputs: Stereo Input 1; Stereo Input 2; FX Return 1; FX Return 2; 2 Track Tape Return, providing that the AES/EBU input has not already been assigned to that input. Commonly the Pulsar S/PDIF output would best be routed to Stereo Input 2, or the 2 Track Tape Return input. NOTE Assigning a digital source to an input will override an analogue signal, if present. Press <MENU> to enter the menu pages, scroll through the pages until the ‘SPDIF I/P Setup’ is highlighted and press <ENTER>. Using the encoder, select the destination for the S/PDIF input, press <ENTER> to set and <MENU> to return to the menu pages. NOTE If the S/PDIF input is not required, NOWHERE should be selected in the menu. < SPDIF Input > Route To: STE-1 < SPDIF Input > Route To: FX-1 < SPDIF Input > Route To: 2TRK < SPDIF Input > Route To:NOWHERE Spirit Digital 328 v2 4 Pulsar Setup 3 Wordclock The Pulsar must be set up to receive the wordclock transmitted by the 328. Open the Pulsar environment and select ‘Samplerate Settings’ from the ‘Window’ dropdown menu, or the open the samplerate settings from the icon on the Windows Taskbar. If the optional syncplate is not connected, the Pulsar must slave to the clock on one of its ADAT or S/PDIF inputs. Set the Pulsar to Slave in the Samplerate Settings window, and select ADAT 1, ADAT 2 or S/PDIF as the source. NOTE If a device other than the 328 is connected to the Pulsar S/PDIF input, the Pulsar must be set to receive Wordclock from this device. If also multitracking with both ADAT ports connected to the 328, the 328 must also clock to this source. The Wordclock output of the optional syncplate (if fitted) must then be connected to the 328 Wordclock input and the 328 set to External: BNC. Alternatively, the 328 must synchronize directly to the S/PDIF source from which the Pulsar receives Wordclock. If no S/PDIF device is fitted, the Pulsar should be set to receive Wordclock from a connected ADAT input. If, in a more complex setup, the optional syncplate is connected, the Pulsar may slave to the clock on the BNC wordclock input. Creamware Pulsar II Setup Guide 5 Pulsar Environment With The 328 Reference will need to be made to the Pulsar documentation, and documentation supplied with audio sequencers and other software. Digital 328, Pulsar and Cubase VST The following diagram shows the connections which will route the 16 24-bit ADAT outputs from the 328 directly into 8 Stereo 24-bit ASIO inputs for use with Steinberg Cubase VST. 8 Stereo 24-bit ASIO outputs are routed from Cubase through the Pulsar environment into the 328 16 ADAT Inputs. The Pulsar S/PDIF input and output are routed to and from the Windows wave drivers, and the 328 MIDI In and Out are connected via the Pulsar MIDI ports into the MIDI Out and In of Cubase. Spirit Digital 328 v2 6 Digital 328, Pulsar and Cakewalk Professional The following diagram shows the connections which will route the 16 24-bit ADAT outputs from the 328 into 4 Stereo 24-bit wave sources for use with Twelve Tone Systems Cakewalk Professional. The Pulsar S/PDIF input and output are routed to and from a fifth Windows wave driver, and the 328 MIDI In and Out are connected via the Pulsar MIDI ports into the MIDI Out and In of Cakewalk. Creamware Pulsar II Setup Guide 7 4 Additional Information Note that using the 16 bit and 24 bit drivers used simultaneously can generate problems. It is advised that only one bit depth is used in a Pulsar Project. When used with the 328 alone, the 24 bit drivers can be used. When used with other manufacturers’ equipment or software, the relevant manuals should be consulted.
