Charles J. Karulak, Ed.D.
Headmaster
We have been fortunate to enjoy
yet another outstanding year at
WSSA, continuing our efforts to
provide a first class educational
environment while also improving
our students’ academic skills,
emotional well-being and social
development. On that note, I
would like to say how proud we are
of our graduating class of 2014 and
their accomplishments. We have
a feature in this issue highlighting
them and where they will be
attending colleges in the Fall.
A large part of this school
year has been dedicated to
completing the documentation
for the Independent Schools
Association of the Southwest
(ISAS) accreditation process.
The visitation committee will
visit WSSA October 19-22. The
administration and faculty met
many times during the course
WSSA also had a very successful
year of fund raising which allows
us to continue to provide a
leading-edge education to our
students. Sustaining our high
level of teaching expertise and
providing the technology and
equipment required is an ongoing
process. Our Winston Annual
Fund Drive raised in excess of
$205,000 and 83 % our families
participated. That enabled us to
purchase a new van, complete
the expense associated with the
new school-wide camera system,
increase professional development
for teachers, update computers,
printers, and software programs
for the library and classrooms.
Special thanks to the Turner family
for their donation to provide all
new doors with bullet resistant
glass and an automatic door
opener for the front doors.
Our 24th Annual Gala and
Auction was a fun evening and
raised over $131,000. This was
an increase over the past couple
of years and the proceeds will
allow us to purchase iPads for the
classrooms, replace equipment
for athletics, update computers in
classrooms, and provide tuition
assistance.
We were also honored to be
the recipient of a brand new
playground for our lower school.
This covered playground, along
with new trees and landscaping
were installed in November 2013
by volunteers from the Kingdom
for Kids, CityYear, several local
non-profits, and Winston. I
would also like to thank our
other generous donors who
made this project a reality; Mr.
Harvey Najim, Rick Cavender,
Paul Garro, and Brandon Logan
who represented The Rotary Club
of San Antonio. Donors for the
covered area are the BennackPolan Foundation, the Myra
Stafford Pryor Charitable Trust,
the Gorman Foundation, Walter
and Katherine Brown, Jr., and
Frost National Bank.
I hope you have a great summer
and look forward to working with
you next year.
Mission Statement:
The mission of The Winston School San Antonio is to provide a personalized, college
preparatory education to students with high potential and identified learning
differences. A WSSA graduate is confident, well-rounded, and a life-long self advocate.
From the Desk of Julie Saboe, M.A.
Director of Admissions
I hope everyone enjoyed our

The middle school track team wrapped up
their season on April 17th at the district track
meet held at San Antonio Christian School.
The 5th /6th division finished 7th overall,
while the 7th/8th division finished 11th. For
the 5th/6th grade division, Gerald F. placed
4th in the 200m, 2nd in the 400m, 3rd in the
800m, and 3rd in the long jump. Cristian
I. placed 6th in the 2400m, while Travis D.

the participants improved greatly this season,
and we are proud of all of the hard work they
put in at practice. The high school track team
Winston was represented at the TAPPS 2A
South Regional meet held on April 26th in
Hallettsville. Individuals competing were
Logan G., Noah V., Gray M., and Justin L. in

From The Desk Of Louise Pastorino, Head of Lower and Middle School
As summer is fast approaching, it’s
time to think about plans for the long
break. All children regress somewhat in
academics when left to their own devices
over the summer. At Winston, we have
a variety of summer opportunities for
the students; I encourage all Lower
and Middle School students to take
advantage of the half day academic
program that runs for four weeks. The
information is on our website under
Outreach. If you are unsure about
whether it would benefit your student,
please give me a call.
Summer is also a great time to develop
a life-long enjoyment of reading. As
reading skills and fluency improve, so
does a student’s confidence in reading
ability. On the Winston School website
is a list of some suggested books
appropriate for each grade level. The
students are not expected to read all
these books over the summer. The
list is meant to be used as a reference
for free reading books throughout the
school year, as well. Although some
of these books could be considered
classics, all the books on this list are good
stories that were chosen to appeal to a
wide variety of interests and abilities.
Children’s Choices, a program of the
International Reading Association, also
puts out a new list each year that has
titles not included on the WSSA website
list.
Listening to books on tape or digital
recordings is also a wonderful skill to
learn over the summer. Most students
can comprehend age-appropriate
material that is read aloud to them,
regardless of the independent reading
level mastered. As a student progresses
in school and reading material reaches
a more demanding level, having already
achieved proficiency in the skill of
listening to books read aloud will help
to ensure school success. There are
many ways to find audio books. They
can be downloaded for a fee from sites
such as iTunes or Audible. You can also
check out CD’s from your local library.
Remember to look for unabridged
versions. Balancing independent reading
with listening to books is a good step
toward increasing skills in each area.
When choosing a book for autonomous
reading, consider the student’s
independent rather than instructional
reading level. A student is usually
independent one grade level below
the level at which the student is being
instructed. One way to check for the
appropriateness of the book is to use the
“Five Finger Rule”. Have your student
read the first page of a prospective book
aloud. If five or more words are misread,
the book is probably at too high a level
for your child to read comfortably.
Give me a call if you have questions
specific to your student and the Winston
summer programs.
From The Desk Of Steve Yocham, Head of Upper School
changing. For I saw many of you change
your attitudes about school, make
ambitious future plans, and develop
your individual talents. Your change and
growth has been inspiring to me, as well
as to your parents, friends, and peers.
The Class of two thousand fourteen is a
unique group of individuals. I have had
the pleasure of watching many of these
students grow up academically and
socially over a long time span. Whether
collaborating as your teacher in Lower
School on slide show cartoons, touring
Washington D.C. in Middle School as
your group leader and for some your
roommate, or advising and sometimes
correcting you all in Upper School,
my journey with you has been life
In this group, we have future trainers,
accountants, drama stars, computer
whizzes, military commanders,
broadcasters, beauticians, pilots,
massage therapists, historians, auto
technicians, engineers, psychologists,
doctors, photographers, graphic
designers, artists, and race car designers.
And each is excited and probably a little
nervous to go out and make his or her
contributions to the world.
I look forward to the change you all will
bring.

REGIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITIONS
Students present their scientific research to the public at the annual Science and Engineering
Fair. Students utilize the scientific process in conducting an experiment and defending the
results before members of the scientific community (www.ARASE.org). Both competitions
were attended by public, private and home schooled students from thirty-two counties.
On February 8, Naila M. competed in the Junior Academy of Science and Engineering with
200 other students. She gave an oral presentation describing her science fair project. She
placed 2nd in Junior Division Chemistry.
On March 3, Lauren W., Naila M., and Alex K. competed in the Alamo Regional Science Fair
with 500 other students. Lauren and Naila received Director’s Awards and Alex received an
Honorable Mention.

CELEBRATING OUR ATHLETES
On Thursday, May 8th The Booster Club hosted it’s annual Athletic Banquet in the Gym.
The tables were decorated in balloons with the school colors and the evening’s meal was
catered by Free Birds World Burrito; it was yummy! Bruce Bowen was the guest speaker
and his message to the athletes was to remember the meaning of a team, and to always
do your best and hardest for the good of the team. The individual coaches presented their
team awards and Coaches Borth and Hernandez announced the top athlete awards.

They did it! Diplomas in hand, WSSA seniors crossed the
stage, signifying the culmination of their high school career.
Baccalaureate and Graduation marked the end of their high
school experience at WSSA but the beginning of a new journey.
Just two days after finals, seniors attended Baccalaureate at
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church on Friday, May 16, 2014.
Students were recognized by WSSA Administration as having
completed their course of study. This was a special time for
everyone to reflect on their time together.
The next morning, students arrived for graduation at the WSSA
campus. Dressed in their caps and gowns, this moment was

CLAY, CHILI, AND CINEMA
It was a big night for the arts
department at The Winston
School San Antonio. Nearly
250 people showed up for
the annual event showcasing
top ceramic bowls for auction, a chili
contest and many cinema productions. The bowls, handcrafted
by students, sold at an amazing pace. Nearly 100 bowls were on
display. The chili cook-off always draws great competitors and Mrs.
Angie Cronin took home top honors. The cinema competition
showcased top films from the digital media department. Former
champion, Josh P., took second and third place; while senior Jake
G. took home top honors with his video about today’s youth.
Food, family and fun were all part of a great night at The Winston
School San Antonio.
B CORE LEARNS ABOUT THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER
B1 Core has been studying the importance of the San
Antonio River to Native Americans far back in time, the
Spanish, and Mexican communities and our own community
now. We saw the river at Mission San Juan, the acequias,
the Espada Aqueduct, the Mission Reach portion of the
Riverwalk, and all the way up to the Museum Reach.
Students enjoyed passing through the locks and dam, as
we headed from the Pearl Complex by Rio Taxi to the
downtown Riverwalk and the Alamo. They loved knowing
that our former mayor Lila Cockrell, (Mrs. Gulley’s mother!)
endorsed the locks and dam during the planning of the
Museum Reach.
A CORE DONATES TO KITCHEN ON THE STREET
A Core took a field trip to Frost Bank to have
their “Happy Sock” coins counted that each child
had been collecting. Our class raised $255.55 for
the organization Kitchen on the Street. We had
a donor match this amount, so the other $255.55
will be donated to Triple Mac Equestrian Facility
which is a rescue and rehab center for horses. I
am extremely proud of the G.K.s enthusiasm to
help others in need!
