Discover Glengarry and TOURISM 2014 EDITION Product of The Glengarry News® 2014 DISCOVER GLENGARRY YEAR-ROUND P1 Dear Visitors, We are delighted to welcome you to Glengarry County! Strategically situated between the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers, Glengarry was Ontario’s original settlement and Canada’s first established county. We are an area steeped in history, with attractions such as the Glengarry Pioneer Museum, Nor’Westers & Loyalist Museum and the St. Raphael’s Ruins reminding us of the importance of heritage. Pride in our agricultural, Scottish and Francophone roots abounds in numerous local events. Maxville is home to the world-famous Glengarry Highland Games, the largest Games held outside of Scotland. Williamstown hosts the Williamstown Fair, Canada’s oldest continuous county fair. Don’t forget to visit the many country yard sales, auctions and farmers’ markets! We also invite you to share our natural attributes. Take the family for a stroll through the Glengarry Trails around Loch Garry and the Garry Fen, enjoy a picnic in one of our parks along the St. Lawrence, or find out more about local wildlife at Cooper Marsh. Enjoy your visit, and come back to see us soon. Alexandria www.milanopizzeria.ca 2014 Pl ace We Cal l In 1815, Father Alexander Macdonell of St. Raphael’s built a stone gristmill beside a small pond fed by Loch Garry. The mill and the surrounding area was appropriately named the Priest’s Mill. When the town incorporated in 1883, its name was changed to Alexandria to honour its founder, Father Alexander Macdonell. The Mill Square was the heart of the village. After the town’s incorporation, Alexandria filled with French craftsmen who were eager to ply their respective trades. The tremendously successful partnership, Munro and MacIntosh, built 6,000 carriages and 5,000 sleighs in 1908. The “Glengarry Buggy” acquired fame throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Europe and South Africa. The village St. Finnan’s boomed! However, with the advent of the autoCathedral mobile and the Depression, the carriage factory was forced to close in 1929. Unfortunately, the buildings were demolished in 1938, and no visible landmark remains. One landmark which has endured in Alexandria is the impressive St. Finnan’s Cathedral on the corner of St. Paul and Bishop streets. Its first Mass was on Christmas Day, 1832, and the steeple and bells were erected in 1902. There was a picnic in June 1907 to raise Priest’s Mill funds for a French church, Église Sacré Coeur. The first cornerstone was laid on April 14, 1910, and the structure still stands today on the southeast corner of Main and Lochiel Sts. United Church on the Hill was built in 1912 and officially became a United church in 1925. The church is located on the corner of Kincardine St. E and Dominion St. Church on the Hill Église Sacré Coeur Esthétique et bronzage Peau SERVICE CENTRE Douce ROMEO’S www.autoproservice.com Esthetics and Tanning Tania Chénier Propriétaire/Owner 613-525-3973 164 Bishop N., Alexandria Alignment, Diagnostic Air Conditioning, National Warranty 613 19 Linsley East 525-4984 Alexandria, ON Fax 613-525-5517 ® Every cup of Tims is a work of art. Owner Bill McKenzie, who runs the course along with his wife, Joan, took over the business in 2001, and has spent the past decade-plus rejuvenating the property – improving and maintaining its greens and trimming its trees. The nine-hole course, located on a 32- acre property a couple kilometres east of the 401 Curry Hill exit, offers very reasonable rates and an amenity-filled clubhouse. For more information, call (613) 347-3254. The final stop on our course tour takes us about 30 km northwest of the 401 to the Glengarry Golf & Country Club in Alexandria. Centrally located within an hour’s drive of both Ottawa and Montreal, the course was established more than 50 years ago – the brainchild of seven charter board directors, including Eugene Macdonald, former editor of The Glengarry News. Its first nine holes were opened for play in 1962, and since then, the facility has expanded into an 18-hole, semi-private course featuring a scenic backdrop that includes rolling hills, stands of both young and mature trees, and segments of the Delisle and Garry Rivers – both of which come into play on many holes; not to mention Eastern Ontario’s longest Par 4, ‘The Monster.’ Find out more about “Alexandria’s Hidden Gem” at www.glengarrygolf.ca. • Full Breakfast F-S-S and Holidays • Pro Shop • Driving Range • Power Carts • Fully Lic. Festival co-organizer Pat Quesnel says that for years, the festival was a mecca for those who enjoy old school country music like Dolly Parton and George Jones. This year, however, he’s determined to shake things up a little. And with a group like Quebec’s own The Wonder’s headlining the Saturday night show, you can be sure there will be a whole lotta shaking going on. “They did some successful shows and I thought I would take a chance,” Mr. Quesnel says. “It’s the same kind of music (our audience) was raised on.” That means you won’t hear any top 40 fare at the Wonder’s show, slated to run from 9 p.m. until 12 a.m. on Aug. 30, but you will hear Quebec band The Wonder’s are slated to play Little Nashville’s Saturday night show. some Dion, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. As for the rest of the concert, Little Nashville fans can look forward to another lineup of old school country. The festival itself runs Aug. 29-31 at the Glengarry Sports Palace right here in Alexandria. If you’d like more information, or if you’d like to buy tickets, visit http://www.little-nashville.com. Remember to bring your cowboy boots, your ten-gallon hat, and – if you have one – your RV. There’s plenty of RV parking outside the arena throughout the length of the festival.
