The school will finish at 1.30pm on this day. School returns on Monday July 11th. While the school sector has holidays, the Early Learning Centre continues with normal programs during this time. I wish each school student a happy and safe holiday. Thursday 23 Regional Cross Country Years 7-9 Selected Students Final Day for Term 2 Students will be dismissed at 1:30pm. As we approach the end of Term 2, it is worth considering the changes and developments which have occurred in the last 10 weeks at Doveton College. 1. This term began under difficult circumstances with the death of our much loved facilities manager Mr Hal Wilson. I was proud of how all members of the community worked together to support those in need and to ensure the development of the college continued. 2. The learning teams prepared our students for NAPLAN testing. The approach was cohesive and comprehensive with all students being better prepared than in previous years. 3. We took the college to the community with the Pop Up classroom 4. Case Conferencing approach began at the college with the wellbeing team identifying specific pathways for students in need. 5. The College appointed Michelle Watson to the position of ELC director. 6. The Doveton Engagement and Enhancement Program saw the Term 2 program include dance, cooking and a variety of sports with significant take up by students. Doveton College: The Next Focus 7. The Year 8 and 9 Futures Program continued with the first Seminar Day held with student wellbeing and the Reach program the key focus of the day. It was an outstanding success. Six months ago we finalised our Strategic Review. So far we have implemented a number of priorities. Doveton Teaching and Learning model – how planning for teaching and learning occurs across the college. Instructional practice – the key characteristics I expect to see when I walk into any classroom learning environment. These are now clearly articulated. Intervention program – literacy- the program to support students who are behind in their reading. The program operates across the college. Berry Street – Social and Emotional learning – how conversations and processes within the classroom are structured. All staff are being trained in the Berry Street approach. Leadership development through Bastow courses – training our next level of leaders at the College. Wellbeing processes – case conferencing – a weekly process of reviewing the needs of specific students in a succinct and positive way. Engagement – DEEP- The weekly Engagement and Enhancement program covering sport, dance, music and film. There is still plenty to do: Data platform – the development of a platform to enable student learning data to be collected and be immediately accessible and useful for teaching and learning Numeracy across the college – the next level of learning support for students who are not meeting outcomes in numeracy. Student Voice and Culture – The development of a College Awards System for students who participate and Perform at a level beyond the expected. Feedback processes – a structure to enable effective feedback to parents, students and teachers on school, student and teacher performance. In Term 3, we will initiate many of these priorities. Greg McMahon Executive Principal Camp Reminders Camp Adanac Years 5 – 6 Wednesday 13 – Friday 15 July The Year 5-6 Camp final payment of $37.00 is due on or before June 16, 2016 Camp Oasis Years 3 – 4 Wednesday 17 – Friday 19 August The Year 3-4 Camp instalment of $40.00 is due on June 23 and the final payment of $30.00 is due on or before July 21, 2016 Camp – The Island Years 8 – 9 Wednesday 7 – Friday 9 December Instalments of $30.00 each are due on July 28, September 15 and October 27, 2016 Assistant Principal Report Years Prep – 4 The Year 3s had a wonderful learning experience at the Shrine of Remembrance. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to showcase what they had been learning during Integrated Studies. They wrote lots of great stories! Susan McDonald Assistant Principal Prep – Year 4 Simpson and his Donkey - Written by Robert Walker One day in 1915 in World War 1, the Turkish soldiers found one soldier called Simpson and one donkey called Duffy.They were in Gallipoli trying to save the wounded Australian soldiers. Simpson was sleeping in the trenches with the wounded soldiers. Then the Turkish soldiers woke up the soldiers by shooting at them. Simpson and the wounded called for help. Then the Australian soldiers came to help. Year 3 Shrine Excursion Assistant Principal Report Years 5-9 Doveton Service As part of our innovative and highly successful ‘Futures’ Program all Year Nine students are required to do 6 weeks of Community Service. Community Service is intended to connect students to others in the community and build their understanding of themselves and others. Doveton Service gives students the chance to give something back to the community; to understand through their actions that we all have a part to play in creating a successful and respectful community. For some students the Doveton Service also provides them with an opportunity to do Service beyond the College; widening their horizons and aspirations. This week some of our students have been doing service at the Salvation Army Foodbank, The Doveton Baptist Opp Shop and the Autumn Place Kindergarten. Other students did their service in the College as teacher assistants or assisted the office and grounds staff. All the students have reported a real sense of pride in the Service they are giving and I would like to thank them for the maturity that have brought to this work. Simon Sherlock - Assistant Principal Years 5 – 9 Yellow Room Red Room Every day we have music or singing in the Yellow room. Music or singing is used to calm children, to distract them at nappy time, to help them remember to wash their hands before a meal or just for pleasure. Music is used to relax the children for rest and sleep time. Kristy has a “Monster Box” full of little boxes with little surprises inside and when a child picks a box they choose which song to sing such as a spider might be Incy, wincy Spider and truck might be a Big Mack Truck. Joylene comes in most afternoons and always sings with the children. She has many wonderful props the children really enjoy the Wheels on the Bus Book and the mirror and the song “who has come to the Yellow room?. On Wednesday afternoons Chris brings some children from the school and sings and the children get to play instruments. Julia Cornelius The Red Room Children have been enjoying the sunny weather over the past few weeks. We moved our painting easel outside so that the children could enjoying art and craft whilst benefiting from the sunshine and the fresh air. Emma Duffin-Stephan Green Room Prep Excursion to the Doveton Library Highlight on Numeracy This term in circle time we have been having a focus on numeracy skills. Educators have played a variety of games and learning experiences to further develop the children’s numeracy skills. We have also been reading books about numbers and providing extension on numeracy skills through our playbased program. Some of the skills children learn through play include pattern making, estimation, counting, adding groups of objects, sorting by size, shape and colour ect. We have also been providing learning through our daily routine including tracking time, setting the correct amount of plates and glasses at a table for meals and talking about fractions as we divide up foods. The children have become more skilled and confident in their numeracy skills throughout the term. Lisa Webster On Wednesday 8th June all the Preps walked down to Autumn Place Library. We enjoyed listening to stories and choosing books based on our interests. Grade 1 Scienceworks Excursion I went to Scienceworks yesterday. We came in and did the roll. Then we took a bus to Science works. We went over the West Gate Bridge. A few minutes later ... we got to Scienceworks. We went in and ate snack. After snack we went to the planetarium and saw Tycho to the moon and consolations. Then we ate lunch. The seagulls almost ate my lunch! After lunch we went to Nitty Gritty Super City. We played with the blocks and I lost my jacket in the wheel barrow! After Nitty Gritty Super City we went back to school. – Veda 1A My Scienceworks excursion We went to science works. We had recess and after recess we went to the playground when Miss B blew her whistle and we went to the planetarium. I liked the sun planet and we went to super city. I played with the blocks. I was excited and I had fun. – Melini 1A Scienceworks Yesterday we went to Scienceworks. I went on the bus. All the grade ones went there too. We saw lots of planets and the sun and the moon. I had fun! The best part of the excursion was playing with the bricks in the Nitty Gritty Super City. By Elishah 1B Scienceworks Yesterday we went to Scienceworks. All of the grade onoes and the teachers and some mums came along. We ate our snacks and then we sat on special chairs to watch an out of space movie. I had a fun day. The best thing at Scienceworks was sitting in the comfy chairs and watching the movie about the stars and planets. By Mariam 1B Scienceworks On Tuesday, we went to Scienceworks. We saw so many stars and we watched a movie called ‘Tycho goes to the moon’. After that we went to ‘Nitty Gritty Super City’. Then we ate our lunch and it was time for us to come back to school. I felt so happy – By Hadiyah 1C Scienceworks At Scienceworks we went to the Planetatium. We watched ‘ Tycho goes to the moon’ and then we looked for a boat and a scorpion in the sky. I saw an emu. After that we had our lunch. Then we went to the ‘Nitty Gritty Super City’. Finally we went back to school. I was happy when we went to the Planetarium.- By Amilia 1C Scienceworks On Tuesday, the grade 1 went to Scienceworks. First we went to the bus. Next we waited and then we went inside. We went to have a look at the stuff and we watched a movie of the stars and the planets. We also watched a movie called ‘Tycho’. I loved the Planetarium because we saw all the stars and we learnt that the sun is a big star. You can see Mars and Jupiter in the sky.-By Bilal 1C Science Works th On Tuesday 25 of May all the students in Grade One went on an excursion to Science Works. We went to the planetarium with a very big screen and it was so cool. At the end we went to the playground. After that we went back on the bus and then went back to school. – By Emelia 1D Science Works On Tuesday 25th of May the students in Grade One went on an excursion to Science Works. I liked the Nitty Gritty Super City and I liked the other parts too. I also liked to play on the playground. It was the best day ever! - By Malia 1D Year 9 Transition Interschool Sport The majority of Year 9 students attended a VCE taster day at Fountain Gate Secondary College. Students were allocated groups based on an on-line survey and completed lessons based around VCE subjects. The students were given information about VCE Maths,English and the Rugby Union training academy who are partnered with Melbourne Rebels. We worked alongside year 9 students from Timbara school and enjoyed subjects such as Design Technology, Law, Business Studies, Health and Accounting. If Year 9 students are wishing to attend Fountain Gate Secondary School, further information regarding VCE, subject selection or to organise a tour of the school, either call Fountain Gate directly or contact Miss Talbot. Closing dates for year 10 first choice subjects is Friday 24th June. Year 7 and 8 interschool sport had another highlight this term when 4 teams competed in the division Badminton competition. They were all very competitive with a big win by the Year 7 Boys Badminton team who will now go on to represent our College at the next level. Well done to everyone who tried out for the teams and those who got to compete on the day. Tim Hannan Excellence in Interschool Sport Earlier this year, 8 students became the first in Doveton College history to qualify for the next level in an interschool swimming competition. Tenesha Nathan, Abbey Weeks, Nicky Ah Fook, Angel Iopa, Vahini Ramesh, Lucian Ciuciu, Angus Robertson (below) and Quan Ralph qualified to swim at the Division Finals in the 4x100m freestyle relay for 12-year-old boys and girls. On the 23rd June, three secondary students will be competing in the Regional Cross Country carnival. Sher Ahmadi, Tara Hill and Tiana Mawer will all represent Doveton College at the event. Tianna had the best result for our school at the Division level, coming 4th in her age group. For the third year a secondary badminton team has won the Divisional title to qualify for the regional finals. The year 7 boys team won their competition after training with coach Mr Hannan over the last few months. The team consisted of Hans Aquino, Maruatini Drollett, Brooklyn Vu, Yusuf Eldin, Monara Sou and Naji Mossavi.They will be competing in the regional finals in August. Mark Alter Community On Friday, May 13 our Healthy Little Rainbows Fruit & Vegetable buying cooperative and our Breakfast Club were recognised at the 2016 Casey Volunteer Awards. Healthy Little Rainbows provides fruit, vegetables and healthy recipes to the college community each Tuesday for $10 a bag. Breakfast Club is free and open every day from 8.30 am in the Project House with help from parents, students and community volunteers. The awards were presented by the Mayor Cr. Sam Aziz and were accepted for Healthy Little Rainbows by Kirsty Bartlett and Breakfast Club by Carolyn McLean.Doveton College encourages volunteers in many programs because student learning occurs in partnership with parents and with community support. Roles are varied and flexible and we can work with you to discover a path appropriate to your goals while providing support and enrichment to our children and families. We can support you to discover roles outside the college through links with Not For Profit organisations and volunteer recruitment agencies. Overcooked & A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Fifth Period August 18th The first ever Year 8 Drama Elective will showcase two plays in one night. Come and see Amen Go’s debut of Overcooked; a story about a man who’s cooking show goes viral when everything goes horribly wrong… then EVERYTHING goes horribly wrong! Laugh and cringe as Philip and Tommy try to free themselves from bullies by finding a date to the prom for the most repulsive bully in school, Burp. As well as juggling favours for nearly EVERY other kid in the school! A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fifth Period is a classic reminder of those inescapable social hierarchies that only school could have! The Brothers Grimm Spectacularthon August 25th Come and see the Year 9 Drama Elective take on Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella and more in this hilarious mash-up extravaganza! Performed with their original in-your-face style of the Brothers Grimm, this show is packed with intense insanity and innuendo! Some mature themes, so parent/guardians must accompany primary aged children. Tickets for all three shows will be available online and at the front office soon. All shows begin at 6:30pm and run for approximately 1 hour. Re. 2016 PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Tuesday 19 July 2016 2:15pm – 7:00pm Parent Teacher interviews will be held at Doveton College on Tuesday 19 July from 2:15pm – 7:00pm. School will be finishing early at 1:30pm on Tuesday 19 July. These interviews are important and allow you and your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress. Your children are invited to accompany you to the interview with their teacher. How to book a Parent Teacher appointment: All bookings are made on the Compass Parent Portal. This is accessible via the internet website http://dovetoncollege.vic.jdlf.com.au using your login and password. We have provided instructions on the attached sheets to help you book interview times. If you do not have internet access at home, please visit the College between 7:30am and 4:30pm weekdays (school holidays between 9am – 3.30pm) and use the computers available in our community space near Reception to make your bookings. Our office staff can assist you if you require help. Any families who have indicated on their child’s enrolment that they require an interpreter have been contacted in their language during the last week. Interpreter interviews will be held on Thursday 21 July and parents will be given a timeslot they must attend. If you require an interpreter interview and have not been contacted, please ring the College and we will organise this for you. If you cannot make an interview on Tuesday 19 July, please contact each of your children’s teachers and arrange an alternative meeting times and days. If you have any concerns or need support in this process please contact the College on 8765 0111. How to make a Parent Teacher Interview Booking To access the Compass Parent Portal log into http://dovetoncollege.vic.jdlf.com.au using your username and password. If you don’t remember this, contact the College Office and we will reset it. On the Compass homepage a list of your children will be displayed, with a link to the parent teacher interviews appearing under their name in the blue actions box. Once you click on an interview link Frank SMITH (SMI0001), Prep A The Conference Booking Dashboard will appear. PLEASE NOTE: Each event in the list is specific to each of your children; therefore if you have two or more children at school, the interview slots will appear multiple times. TO MAKE A BOOKING WITH A TEACHER Click on the event title shown above for the child you wish to book an interview for. Primary Classroom Teacher = 15 minute time slot Primary PE/Music/Drama/Art Teacher = 10 minute time slot All Secondary Teachers = 10 minute time slot A new screen will open with booking times for both interview days and the teachers names at the bottom of the screen. Select and click on a time that suits your family to meet with the teacher. A drop down box will appear with the available teachers for that timeslot. Once you have selected a teacher for that time, click ‘Update’. The box will then appear red with the staff members, this booking is now confirmed. If you wish to cancel an appointment select the time again, and click [No booking] and ‘Update’. It will remove the booking and return the timeslot to available. PLEASE NOTE: To view the teachers availability, click on the teachers name at the bottom of the page and their schedule will appear. This screen is read only, bookings cannot be made on this page. You will then need to go back to the Conference bookings Dashboard to book for the next student. There is a shortcut on the top right of the screen. Once you are happy with all your bookings for each child, you can print a list of all the bookings using the link on the right hand side of the screen “Print All Bookings”. If you require assistance making these appointments, the office staff can assist you with this. You can either visit the College or phone to make an interview booking on 8765 0111. Parent Teacher Interview Information Access to the College will by Tristania Street and Ash Street gates. Please note from the information below where to locate your children’s teachers. Primary Classroom Teacher Interviews All Primary Classroom Teacher interviews will be held in the child’s actual classroom with their teacher, with the exception of Year 6 which will be held in the Wellbeing Centre. Each interview is scheduled for 15 minutes. If you require more than 15 minutes, please contact the teacher after the evening to organise a further meeting time. Primary Specialist & Secondary Teacher Interviews All primary students have specialist subjects of Art, PE, Music and Drama each year. Students in Years 7 – 9 study Maths/Science, English/Humanities, Recreation, and up to 5 Design Brief subjects. Interviews are available with each of the teachers who teach your child in Semester 2. All secondary and specialist staff will be located in the Community Room in the administration building.
