From the Principal’s Desk...
Dear Parents:
It’s hard to believe that we have almost completed another school year!
I have
sincerely enjoyed this year with our Tomcats as they have progressed through their
studies. I am so proud of our seniors and their accomplishments; it’s hard to believe
only a few short years ago they were just entering East High as ninth graders. We
will be recognizing many of our seniors at several upcoming events this month.
On May 12th, we will be holding our first “Decision Day”. Decision Day is an event
sponsored by the National College Advising Corps (NCAC) to honor graduating high
school seniors and their decision to continue their education at a post-secondary
institution. Decision Day aims to celebrate students' success, and their commitment to
post-secondary education or training at a time when college education is becoming
increasingly important, especially in today's economy. Decision Day also creates
visibility for the advisers, so freshmen, sophomores and juniors know they will
eventually get to celebrate this big day!
Additionally, top students and scholarship recipients in the Class of 2011 will be
recognized at our Senior Honors Night on May 18, 2011.
The Fine Arts Department is finishing the year with several programs that will
showcase the many artistic talents of our Tomcats. Please join us on May 10th for the
Choral Concert and May 17th for the final Jazz Band concert of the year. These are
always enjoyable evenings for everyone in attendance.
I am looking forward to attending many of the celebrations of Tomcat achievement
during the upcoming weeks. The many accomplishments of our students are the result
of their hard work, effort and persistence. As we move forward through the final
weeks of the school year, I ask that you remind your students to complete the school
year with a focus on academic excellence and achievement as they prepare for final
exams.

¡ s difícil creer que hemos concluido otro año escolar! Sinceramente disfruté este
año con nuestros Tomcats, al verlos progresar a través de sus estudios. Estoy muy
orgullosa de nuestros estudiantes seniors y sus logros; es difícil creer que hace solo
algunos años recién ingresaban al noveno grado en la secundaria. Reconoceremos a
muchos de nuestros estudiantes seniors, en varios eventos durante este mes.

El 12 de mayo, llevaremos a cabo nuestro primer “día de decisión”. El día de
decisión, es un evento auspiciado por National College Advising Corps (NCAC),

El departamento de bellas artes, está concluyendo el año con varios programas que

Athletic Department News
Parents are encouraged to check schedules for athletic events online. Spring sports schedules are posted at
www.highschoolsports.net. If we cancel a game, it will be shown on the website. Bus times are also
available on the website. When in doubt of a location of an athletic event, please contact the Head Coach or
the Athletic Department.
The Spring Banquet will be held on May 26th. All spring athletes and their
parents are encouraged to attend the banquet. Tickets for the banquet will
be available in the athletic office after May 15th.
Due to popular demand, Letterman Jackets now can be purchased in the
“Paw Place.” Prices for the jackets are listed below.

Summer camps will be starting in June. Check with your coach to see when your sport’s camp will be held.
Summer camps are a good way to keep your skill strong and to strengthen your body over the summer. All
athletes are encouraged to contact their Head Coach to become involved with Summer Programs and Camps.
In addition, all athletes are encouraged to contact their Counselor to enroll in Athletic Conditioning.
With the school year coming to an end, athletes should start looking forward to the next season. Now is the
time to get an appointment for a sports physical and double check the grades with your counselor to be sure
you are going to be eligible next year. Please remember that an athlete who wishes to compete in sports
must have passed 5 classes. If necessary, look into enrolling in summer school to shore up your grades.
Physicals are always available at the Tomcat Health Center by appointment.

National Library Week
Semana Nacional de la Biblioteca
The East High library sponsored several activities during National Library Week April 10-16. Students were encouraged to
showcase their creativity in the second annual “Create a Bookmarker Contest”. The library staff, who acted as judges for the
contest, chose three outstanding bookmarks and awarded prizes to the winners: first place ($25 gift certificate), second place
($15 gift certificate) and third place ($10 gift certificate).
On April 13th, National Library Day, students and staff alike were
encouraged to dress like their favorite literary character. Throughout
the day, many “characters” stopped in the library for a photo and to
enter the contest for the “Best Character” Award. Photos of our
“characters” are on display in the library.
La biblioteca de la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora auspicia varias actividades durante la Semana Nacional de la
Biblioteca del 10 al 16 de Abril. Se invita a los estudiantes para que exhiban su creatividad en el segundo concurso anual

Curriculum Corner
May is an extremely busy month here at the high school! In the curriculum world, it is the month of final
exams and preparing for the next school year. The final exam schedule, for both seniors and grades 9-11
are listed on the front of this newsletter. Please review this and plan with your child so that they are prepared
for their exams.
Summer school is scheduled for June 21-July 21, 2011 (no class July 4th) at
Waubsonsee Community College’s Aurora campus. Additionally, math
courses will be offered at the high school this summer. Students may take
math and English classes required for graduation that they may not have
passed during this school year for no cost. It is also a time to take some
courses to get ahead or open up a time period in the fall for an additional
elective course. Please discuss summer school with your child. It is very
important to note that there is a strict attendance policy, so the commitment to
summer school must be made for the entire time period.
Registration for summer school (both for Waubonsee Community College and
East High locations) will be on June 7th and 8th.
Your child’s counselor will have more details about the registration process.
Please be sure to make reading a summer priority for your child. Read for enjoyment and enrichment!

¡Mayo es un mes extremadamente ocupado aquí en la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora! En el mundo

escolar. El horario de los exámenes finales para los estudiantes seniors y para los estudiantes de los

Literacy Corner
A reminder from the Literacy Team: School will be ending soon and many summer activities will take place. While students are meeting with friends and attending events they should be thinking about learning. This can be achieved by visiting new places, meeting new people and reading over the summer. This will help students continue their learning. Research shows that students who read and learn over the summer do better in school than students who don’t. We encourage parents and family members to help extend students learning over the summer. Attend events together and make sure reading is part of your summer activities. Remember a book goes anywhere. Enjoy your summer break and return to school ready to learn. Page 12
SIX DISTINGUISHED TOMCAT ALUMI INDUCTED
INTO THE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI HALL OF FAME
Six distinguished Tomcats were inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame during the 7th annual Distinguished
Alumni Awards Ceremony on April 28, 2011: Kaye Groot Mason (Class of 1942), Daniel D. Dolan (Class
of 1949), Robert McCue, Sr. (Class of 1956); Dr. John LaCart (Class of 1965); Karen Platt Hart (Class
of 1969); and Dr. Narda Coronado (Class of 1981). Additionally, the 2011 Outstanding Community
Service Award was presented to Businessman and Youth Advocate, Mr. John Galles (Class of 1942).
These six distinguished alumni and the Community Service Award recipient are leaders in their respective
fields
KAYE GROOT MASON – CLASS OF 1942 - As a student at East Aurora High
School, Kaye Groot Mason was consistently on the Honor Roll, participated in
Drama, Choir, Delphi, Variety Show, Band, and was a member of the Speculum
Staff. After graduation, Mason became a very successful local entrepreneur with
international connections. She currently owns and operates three businesses in
downtown Aurora, Check-Lab, Inc., FM Graphic Impressions, and Professional
Packaging Corporation. As a leader in the industry, Kaye Mason traveled to
Washington, D.C. to help established uniform labeling systems for the entire blood
banking industry. In addition, she helped to develop barcode symbology called
Codabar.
Kaye Mason serves on the Board of Directors for Downtown Aurora. She is also the Treasurer of The
Vintage Car Show, an annual event that highlights the historic past of Aurora’s LaSalle Street.
DANIEL D. DOLAN – CLASS OF 1949 – As a student, Daniel Dolan lettered in football, basketball, and
golf. After graduating East Aurora High School, Dolan served in the United States Navy. Upon returning
home to Aurora, he served his community as an Aurora Firefighter for five years. Over 45 years ago, Dolan
partnered with James Murphy to establish the commercial real estate firm known as Dolan & Murphy.
Throughout the years, Dolan & Murphy became involved in annexing and zoning thousands of acres in
Aurora and Kane County. They have played an integral role in formulating Aurora’s comprehensive plan
and zoning ordinance that paved the way for Aurora’s economic development along Interstate 88. These
developments have generated massive tax revenues for the City of Aurora.
For over 40 years, he sponsored little league baseball teams where he even coached when his children were
playing. For 20 years, he sponsored the Murphy Fast Pitch Softball Team as well.
ROBERT MCCUE, SR. – CLASS OF 1956 – From student at East Aurora High School to president of the
East Aurora Board of Education, Robert McCue, Sr. has had a business and service career that has come full
circle. As a student, McCue was Captain of the Football Team, earned All-Conference for the Big Eight and
All Chicago Area Football honors, and held the record for the 440-yard dash. After graduating East High, he
attended Western Illinois University. He then enrolled in the Training Program at the Aurora Pump
Company. McCue then branched out on his own and bought a minority interest in the Thomas Pump
Company of Chicago in 1964, just nine years after he graduated high school! Today, the Thomas Pump
Company is a distinct leader in the field. McCue has personally sold pumps to nearly twenty of the tallest
high-rise buildings in Chicago including The Trump Tower and The Sears Tower, now known as The Willis
Tower.
A devoted Tomcat, Robert McCue, Sr. has supported youth baseball and education for decades. McCue
served on the East Aurora Board of Education for twelve years of which the last of those were as President
of the Board of Education.

DR. JOHN LACART – CLASS OF 1965 - Dr. John LaCart was ranked third in his class at East Aurora
High School. He received varsity letters in basketball and football. His Tomcat football team went
undefeated and claimed the Upstate Eight Conference Championship title. During his senior year, he was
selected All-Conference Quarterback and elected to the Chicago Tribune Prep All-Star Team. LaCart entered
DePauw University after graduation. He graduated from there with Phi Beta Kappa Honors in 1969 and
matriculated to Rush Medical College where he also graduated with honors in 1973. Dr. LaCart completed a
one-year Surgical Internship at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital and a four-year Orthopedic Residency
at Northwestern University in Chicago. During his medical career, Dr. LaCart served as Chief Resident at
both Children’s Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He later joined Dreyer Medical
Clinic in Aurora where he practiced for 27 years. During his tenure at Dreyer, he served as Chairman of the
Orthopedic Surgery Department.
An avid Tomcat and advocate for children, Dr. LaCart has served as a team physician and consultant for East
Aurora High School since 1978. He has also served as a team physician for Aurora University and other
Aurora area schools. In addition, he has dedicated over a decade as volunteer at Shriners’ Children’s Clinic.
Dr. LaCart was nominated for the 1995 EA Sports Boosters Hall of Fame and received the Tommy Award in
1997.
KAREN HART – CLASS OF 1969 - From elementary school pupil to elementary school principal, she has
spent her life in East Aurora Schools. During high school, she was an honors student who participated in the
Folk Music Club, the Aqua Cats, and a classroom volunteer. It was her volunteer duties during her senior
year in a special education classroom that led to her to a career in education. Hart majored in elementary and
special education at Northern Illinois University. After she graduated with her teaching degree, she taught
sixth grade in Norwalk, Ohio for two years prior to returning to Aurora to teach elementary school at
O’Donnell Elementary School. After obtaining her Masters Degree in Administration from NIU, Hart
moved to Brady Elementary School where she served in a dual role of teacher and assistant principal. In
1990, when East Aurora School District 131 opened its twelfth elementary school, Karen Hart was the
choice as the school’s new leader. Hart been nominated for Kane County Educator of the Year, Kane
County Administrator of the Year, and received a Those Who Excel Award from the Illinois State Board of
Education.
DR. NARDA CORONADO – CLASS OF 1981 - Dr. Narda Coronado graduated seventh in her class and
was one of the most active students in the school. As a member of the National Honors Society, she also
played oboe in the Performance Band, coronet in the Jazz Band, and Percussion in the Marching Band. In
addition, she played softball, tennis, volleyball, and she set several records as a member of the East Aurora
Swim Team.
Coronado matriculated to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she graduated in 1985 with
a B.S. in Liberal Arts & Sciences. Coronado received a full four-year scholarship to the University of Illinois
Dental School in Chicago. There, she received the Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award and graduated
as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1990. After graduation, Dr. Coronado worked at a number of dental offices
in the greater Chicago area before purchasing Dr. Lee’s Dental Practice in Aurora when he retired in 1996.
Dr. Coronado still holds true to her commitment to East Aurora, children, and the Aurora community. She
currently provides free dental care and back to school screenings for many back-to-school fairs for the
Aurora Children’s Dental Service. She also donates much of her free time and expertise to the St. Basil’s
Free Clinic in Chicago. She has received commendations from the State of Illinois for her work with St.
Basils. Dr. Coronado has established the Coronado Dental Scholarship at the Community Foundation of the
Fox River Valley to provide assistance to Aurora students who are entering the fields of Dentistry and
Medicine.

OUSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
MR. JOHN GALLES – CLASS OF 1942 - For nearly 65 years, John Galles has owned Johno’s Main
Surplus Store. In addition, Mr. Galles began Johno’s Midwest Awards Company as a counterpart to his
business. For over 50 years, John Galles has been active in Aurora Boys Baseball and has been a catalyst for
its success. He has been a member of the Board of Directors and an agent for the baseball club for that same
amount of time. To highlight his years of service, the baseball complex at Aurora’s Solfisburg Park was
named the John P. Galles Baseball Complex for his ‘lifetime of dedication to boys’ baseball in Aurora.
John has been named to East Aurora Sports Boosters Hall of Fame and the Aurora Baseball Hall of Fame.
The East Aurora Alumni Association is honored to present Mr. John Galles with the 2011 Outstanding
Community Service Award

Seis distinguidos Tomcats, fueron alistados en el Paseo de la fama de ex-alumnos, durante la 7ma ceremonia
anual de reconocimiento para ex-alumnos distinguidos, el 28 de abril de 2011: Kaye Groot Mason (clase de
1942), Daniel D. Dolan (clase de 1949), Robert McCue, Sr. (clase de 1956), Dr. John LaCart (clase de
1965), Karen Platt Hart (clase de 1969), y Dr. Narda Coronado (clase de 1981). Además, el sobresaliente
reconocimiento de servicio comunitario fue presentado para el empresario y defensor de los jóvenes, el Sr.

ROBERT MCCUE, SR. – CLASE DE 1956 – De estudiante en la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora
a presidente de la Junta de educación del Este de Aurora, Robert McCue, Sr., ha tenido un negocio y servicio
de profesiones que han llegado a su término. Como estudiante, McCue fue capitán del equipo de fútbol,
recibió los honores All-Conference para el Big Eight de fútbol en el área de Chicago, lleva un récord de una
carrera de 440 metros. Después de graduarse de East High, asistió a la Universidad Western Illinois. Después
se inscribió en el programa de entrenamiento en la Compañía Aurora Pump. ¡McCue se independizó y
compró un interés minoritario en Thoman Pump Company de Chicago en 1964, a solo nueve años después

LaCart se desempeñó como Jefe de residentes en ambos hospitales, Children’s Memorial Hospital y
Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Más tarde, formó parte de Dreyer Medical Clinic en Aurora, donde
practicó la medicina por 27 años. Durante su permanencia en Dreyer, se desempeñó como presidente del
Departamento de cirugía ortopédica.
Un Tomcat ávido y defensor de los niños, Dr. LaCart ha prestado sus servicios como un equipo médico y
consultor para la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora desde 1978. También se desempeñó como equipo
médico para la Universidad de Aurora y otras escuelas del área de Aurora. Además, él se ha dedicado por
más de una década como voluntario en la Clínica Shriners Children’s Clinic. Dr. LaCart, fue nominado para
el Paseo de la fama deportivo de Este de Aurora Boosters en 1995 y recibió un Reconocimiento Tommy en
1997.
KAREN HART – CLASE DE 1969 – De estudiante de escuela elemental a directora de escuela elemental,
ha dedicado su vida en las Escuelas del Este de Aurora. Durante la secundaria, fue una estudiante con
honores que participó en el Club de música folklórica, Agua Cats y como voluntaria en el salón de clases.
Sus responsabilidades como voluntaria durante su año senior en un salón de educación especial, la estimuló
a tomar la decisión en estudiar una profesión en educación. Hart recibió su título en educación elemental y
especial en la Universidad Northern Illinois. Después de recibir su titulación en enseñanza, impartió clases
en sexto grado en Norwalk, Ohio por dos años antes de regresar a enseñar en nivel elemental en Aurora en la
Escuela Elemental O’Donnell. Después de recibir su maestría en administración de NIU, Hart se trasladó a la
Escuela Elemental Brady; donde desempeñó una doble responsabilidad como maestra y subdirectora. En
1990, cuando el Distrito Escolar 131 del Este de Aurora abrió su doceava escuela elemental, Karen Hart fue
la opción como nueva líder escolar. Hart ha sido nominada como maestra del año por el condado de Kane,
administradora del año y recibió el reconocimiento Those Who Excel de la Junta de educación del Estado de
Illinois.

DR. NARDA CORONADO – CLASE DE 1981 – La Dr. Narda Coronado fue la séptima graduada en su
clase y fue una de las estudiantes más partícipes en la escuela. Como miembro de la Sociedad nacional de
honores, también tocó el oboe en la presentación de la banda, la corneta en la banda de jazz y percusión en
la banda de música. Además, jugó softball, tennis, vólibol y estableció varios récords como miembro del
equipo de natación del Este de Aurora.
Coronado se inscribió en la Universidad de
Urbana-Champaign, donde se graduó en 1985
con una titulación en artes liberales y ciencias.
Coronado recibió una beca completa por cuatro
años para la Universidad de Illinois-Escuela
odontológica en Chicago. Recibió reconocimiento por logro clínico y se graduó como médico cirujano dental
en 1990. Después de graduarse, la Dra. Coronado trabajó en varias oficinas dentales en gran parte del área de
Chicago, antes de comprar la práctica odontológica del Dr. Lee en Aurora, cuando se retiró en 1996.
La Dra. Coronado, todavía se mantiene fiel a su compromiso al Este de Aurora, los niños y la comunidad de
Aurora. Actualmente, proporciona cuidado dental gratuito y evaluaciones de regreso a clases para muchas
ferias de inicio escolar para el servicio dental de los niños de Aurora. También dona mucho de su tiempo
libre y experiencia a la Clínica gratuita St. Basil en Chicago. Ha recibido elogios del Estado de Illinois por
su trabajo con St. Basil. La Dra. Coronado ha establecido la beca Coronado Dental en la fundación
comunitaria de Fox River Valley, para proporcionar asistencia a los estudiantes de Aurora que ingresan a los

RECONOCIMIENTO AL SERVICIO COMUNITARIO SOBRESALIENTE
SR. JOHN GALLES – CLASE DE 1942 – Por casi 65 años, John Galles ha sido propietario de la tienda
Main Surplus Store. Además, el Sr. Galles empezó la compañía de reconocimiento Johno Midwest como
contraparte para su negocio. Por más de 50 años, John Galles ha sido activo en el equipo varonil de béisbol
Aurora y siendo un catalizador por su éxito. Ha sido miembro de la Junta de directores y agente para el club
de béisbol por el mismo periodo de tiempo. Para resaltar sus años de servicio, el complejo de béisbol en el
Parque Solfisburg de Aurora fue nombrado el Complejo de béisbol John P. Galles, por su “vida de
dedicación a los niños” en béisbol de Aurora.
John ha sido nombrado para el paseo de la fama deportivo Boosters del Este de Aurora y el paseo de la fama
de béisbol de Aurora. La Asociación de ex-alumnos del Este de Aurora, se honra en presentar al Sr. John
Galles con el reconocimiento al servicio comunitario sobresaliente 2011.
EAST AURORA HIGH SCHOOL NJROTC CADETS VISIT Washington D.C. and Norfolk, Virginia East Aurora High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corps (NJROTC) took ten outstanding students from
the NJROTC program on a spring break tour to visit historical
sites, colleges and universities, and military bases in the
Washington D.C. and Norfolk, Virginia area. The cadets
learned about world history, explored college opportunities and
technical specialties offered throughout the military services
while meeting outstanding role models and leaders.

NJROTC Booster Club), and Naval Science Instructor’s Master Chief Petty Officer George Allen & Petty
Officer First Class Mike Lachowicz.
The East Aurora High School NJROTC
inaugural spring break trip to Washington D.C.
and Norfolk, Virginia included Henry Alarcon,
Daniel Hernandez, Jose Gurrola, Marquese
Moore, Diana Jimenez, Jennifer Vazquez,
Heather Soto, Giovanni Gutierrez, Jessica
Patino, and Alfredo Alcala.
They toured many sites and visited several
colleges and universities during the trip. The
cadets spent a couple days visiting the
historical sites in the Washington Mall and took
a few pictures in front of The White House.
They enjoyed seeing the beautiful flowers of the
Cherry Blossoms season; visiting the Vietnam
Memorial and touring the National Air and
Space Museum. They spent a full day at the
United States Naval Academy in Annapolis,
Maryland.

EAST AURORA HIGH SCHOOL NJROTC CADETS VISIT continued from Page 18… The cadets became more knowledgeable and better friends, plus they had a fabulous time hanging out.
They played games, enjoyed a pizza night party, had an ice cream social and visited the local malls during
their spring break. Fun! Fun! Fun! They were so busy during the trip that at bedtime sleeping was the only
thing they had on their minds because they were so tired from all the travel and events. Our overall travel
on the road was approximately 2,600 miles round trip.
During our commute to Norfolk, Virginia we traveled across one of the Seven Engineering Marvels of the
Modern World, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which spans across water for over 20 miles. We encouraged
the cadets to take many pictures throughout the trip. This was a great experience for the cadets. The
highlights of the trip were many -- it’s hard to pick one! Each cadet would probably say something different
was their highlight, but a couple words that you will hear often is “amazing and phenomenal.”

the United States Naval Academy with a degree in
