So many Canadians like to tour in our
summer which is good news for us and
we’ve struck it rich early this year - in fact
on Friday 7th November when Canada’s
Annie Lou Band plays at the Folk Club.
Annie Lou will be supported by singer/
songwriter and cultural historian, Ben
Scott from The Blue Mountains.
Anne Louise emerged several years
ago from the Yukon’s fertile crop of
songwriters with two solo CDs that
showcase her critically acclaimed
songwriting. She found her true muse
when she discovered bluegrass and old
time mountain music, and her original
songs are steeped in these influences.
Noted for her exceptional songwriting,
solid rhythm guitar playing and great
big vocals, Anne Louise has toured major
festivals and venues throughout Canada
with Annie Lou. Her debut Annie Lou
album was nominated for a 2010 Juno
Award and a 2010 Western Canadian
Music Award, and her sophomore release
Grandma’s Rules for Drinkinggarnered
two 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award
nominations for English Songwriter of the

Year and Solo Artist of the Year.
Anne Louise has toured nationally and
internationally as a solo and ensemble
performer. Through exploring bluegrass
and old time music, she has added banjo,
fiddle, and mandolin to her roster of
instruments, and she composes on all
of these as well as pursuing her craft
of fine songwriting. Genest is racking
up experience as a teacher and has led
several workshops on songwriting, lead
and harmony vocals, and rhythm guitar
at various music camps across the country.

Steve Tyson will be launching his new

follow up to 2011's critically acclaimed

but has since moved to the ‘Gong’ so she
doesn’t have as far to travel to the club.

My letterbox was empty,

David Hyams in singer-songwriter
mode, playing mostly material from his
recently released “Travelling Bones”
album, a departure from the celtic inspired
fusion of Hyams’ Miles To Go band, with
songs more rooted in folk & country with
bluesy tinges. The strong connection to
the WA landscape remains, with stories
of an encounter with an emu on a desolate
stretch of north west highway, a celebration
of a Kimberley night, and the ritual
pilgrimage to favourite southern coastal

Becoming a Community Partner
The Illawarra Folk Festival is a community
based event organised by volunteer
musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers
and culturally minded folk! The festival
has over the years provided financial
benefit to a number of charities and nonprofit organisations including Leukaemia
Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, Bulli
Uniting Church East Timor Fund, St John’s
Ambulance, Greenacres, SCARF, APHEDA,
GreenConnect, Scout groups, SES Branches,
schools, Canteen, Salvation Army, Bulli
Uniting Church, Bulli Show Society, Rural
Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and South
Coast School for Children with Autism. This
benefit totals more than $95,000 and began
with the major sponsorship of the festival
by Diageo (Guinness) in 2001.

In memory of
mark doran
It is with a somewhat heavy heart that I
have to report the death of our treasurer
Mark Doran.
Mark Died on Monday October 13th
surrounded by his family after a relatively
short battle with a very aggressive cancer.
Mark was an old music lover from way
back and was our treasurer for a number
of years- and a very fine treasurer he was
too. He was the initial face of the folk club
and was always on the door to collect your
money as you entered.
Being the volunteer treasurer of the folk
club is an onerous task- our turnover is
over $400000 per year (we spend nearly
all of it) but Mark handled it with finesse
and never complained when his treasurer’s
duties precluded him from seeing some of
the acts at the Folk Festival that he may
have wanted to see.
Mark grew up in Cronulla and was an
excellent Rugby League player until a
series of injuries forced him out of the
game. He went to Teachers College and
became a teacher for a number of years and
then had a variety of occupations including
managing the famous Bat and Ball Hotel at
Moore Park (I believe I had my first drink
(Illegally) at the Bat and Ball). Mark had
an acute awareness of folk music and as he
saw most concerts he was a great sounding
board on the quality of the artists and
concerts. We had many great discussion
about the concerts on the way home.
He was thinking and concerned about the
Folk Club right up until his death. Peter
Butler saw him on the week before he
died and he put his hand on his arm and
said- ‘Don’t let Russell have the cheque
book again’. I had got the cheque book off
him when he was in hospital to pay some
outstanding bills (never suspecting what
the future held) I happily signed cheques
and posted them off without realising that
the bulk of our cash reserves weren’t in our
cheque account. The invertible happened,
of course, and like a rubber ball some of
them bounced. I think Mark was pretty
disgusted with me and Peter Butler has
dined out on the story. ‘Fessing’ up here
should stop that.
Another story that I love to tell is that one
day, around Christmas time,
I was in Warilla Grove. I saw a jovial fellow
approaching me ‘Ho, Ho-ing’ and ‘Merry
Christmasing’. It was Santa, of course.
“Here’s a lolly and have a Merry Christmas
young fellow’ says Santa ringing his bell. I
was a bit taken aback until I looked behind
the beard and saw it was Mark in another of
his incarnations- “Piss of with your lollies’,
Santa I said. Go and get some Coopers
to give out”. He bought me a Christmas
Coopers the next time I saw him.
Mark, who was a great family man, lived
at Oak flats with his wife Kim and had
two lovely daughters of whom he was
inordinately fond. I’d often see him at the
Green Poppy Coffee Shop in Shellharbour,
where, after walking his dog, he would call
in to buy Kim a take home cappuccino. Our
sympathies and thoughts are with them
and we will have a concert at the Festival
to celebrate Mark’s life.
Mark’s funeral was held on Friday 17th at
the Hansen and Cole Chapel in Northcliffe
Drive. There was a large contingent of
Illawarra Folkies there and there was
standing room only foe latecomers. The
service was conducted by ABC announcer,
Steve Parsons, a great friend of the folk club
and Gary and Carl Doran, his brothers, did
eulogies.
As the crowd moved out of the Chapel,
Enda Kenny’s song, ‘The Smell of Rain’
which was one of Mark and Kim’s
favourites was played with a picture of
Mark with Peter and Yvonne Butler serving
Enda a Guinness at one of our Jamberoo
Festivals. That night at The Kangaroo
Valley Folk Festival Enda sang the song
and dedicated it to Mark. That song will
appear on our 30th Pearl Anniversary
Festival Album with a due tribute to Mark.
The crowd, in almost its entirety, then
adjourned to the Conno Pub where tales
were told and Coopers and red wine
flowed. Vale Mark Doran, taken too
soon and sadly missed- One of Nature’s
Gentlemen.

PEARLER
The Illawarra Folk Festival will be
celebrating it’s 30th Pearl Anniversary in
2015, and the engine room at the Illawarra
Folk Club is full steam ahead with plans for
the biggest and best festival yet!
Special events include the inaugural
fringe street band festival HONK! Oz, an
extended program of youth opportunities
including the launch of the Folkaphonic
Youth Orchestra, a new venue featuring
songwriters circles, the “It’s a Pearler” song
and tune writing competition supported
by APRA/AMCOS, and a special 30th
anniversary exhibition.
The highlight of the festival is certain to
be the Friday night costumed Pearl Ball,
where the weekend will kick off in style
with a fantastically flamboyant concert, and
run into the wee hours with gypsy dance
bands and a sea shanty session guaranteed
to tickle the sternest of swashbucklers! The
Thursday of the festival is also expanding
to include more concerts and activities
and as always, proceeds will go directly to
charity organisations, this year’s recipients
being Cystic Fibrosis NSW and The Denny
Foundation.
A major focus for the Illawarra organising
committee this year is to provide more
opportunities to young people interested
in playing folk music. As well as the highly
successful folk music school, youth concerts
and the Youth Traditions Awards, young
musicians are also being invited to take part
in the new national youth folk orchestra,
Folkaphonic. This exciting new concept
developed by golden fiddle winner Emma
Nixon and artistic director David De Santi
will continue beyond the festival to offer
performance opportunities around the country,
workshops, camps and special projects.
As well as booking a raft of new national and
international artists, the committee have
made sure to invite back some of the many
beloved musicians who have supported
the Illawarra Folk Festival over the years,
and made it the flourishing community
event it is today. Earlybird tickets go on
sale soon, and it’s recommended that you
get in early and book for what is sure to be

Calling all songwriters and tune writers!
The Illawarra Folk Festival invites all
songwriters and musicians residing
in Australia to enter our 30th Pearl
Anniversary song contest - It's A Pearler!
Generously sponsored by our friends
atAPRA AMCOS with cash prizes!
Australian composers of all ages will be
able to submit new compositions with a
pearl reference, connection, theme or title.
How you include the pearl theme is entirely
up to you, as long as it's obvious enough
for the judges to recognise it! Depending
on the category, submissions will be
judged on the following criteria: creativity,
originality, lyrics (excludes songs that do
not have lyrics), melody, arrangement, and
overall likeability.
Applications are now open for five
exciting opportunities for young
musicians to PLAY FOLK at 30th Pearl
Anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival.
The Youth Folk Project is inviting
musicians between 9 and 25 years of age
to apply for a place in the Youth Traditions
Awards performances at the 2015 Illawarra
Folk Festival. Applications are also open
for positions in the new national youth folk
orchestra, Folkaphonic. Musicians 18 years
and under are also invited to apply for one
of 20 full scholarships to the annual Folk
School and to write a song or tune for prize
money in the It’s A Pearler Songwriting
Competition which is supported by
APRA/AMCOS.
Check the website for the application in
late October.
Wanted Billets
In order to keep accommodation costs
for performers to a minimum the Festival
utilises home stay billets provided by the
local community.
It's a great way to help the festival, meet
interesting performers and to get some
free Season Passes and complimentary
vouchers to use at the festival!
We expect you to provide a continental
breakfast for them.
In return you will receive 2 Season Passes
(valued at $180 each) plus $30 Black
Diamond Dollars which can be used at the
Festival Bar or for a Festival CD / T-Shirt.
If you can provide longer accommodation
(ie from Monday for Folk School tutors),
additional Black Diamond Dollars will be

A joint effort by the Illawarra Folk Club
and Illawarra Folk Festival, The Youth
Folk Project aims to provide regular
opportunities for young people to learn,
perform and engage with professional
musicians and each other. As well as
encouraging young artists to explore
and perform traditional folk music from
Australia and abroad, the project directors
hope to broaden young artists repertoire
of folk songs and tunes and provide them
with unique promotional, learning and and
professional opportunities.
In a new initiative The Mae Trio from
Victoria have been selected as the first
Youth Folk Ambassadors. In this role at
the festival they will be sharing how they
have achieved their success in performing
folk music around Australia and the world.

While on the subject of reprobates and
rapscallions (I think we were weren’t we?)
The latest offering from the dreaded Blue
the Shearer was one he wrote back in 1992.
The late Andrew Ollie rang him personally
to ask if he could use it on air during Mental
Health Week. It’s been reissued for Mental
Heath Week this year and remains one of
the best support documents I’ve seen about
‘The Black Dog’.
Blue himself writes:- After Andrew's
breakfast show, the poem went to many
countries who picked it up for their mental
health magazines. I understand that it
has been translated into Dutch, German,
Danish, and even American and Pigeon
English.
It's four years since I've done it. I've been
impressed with the coverage ABC is giving
the subject on TV and Radio, so I thought
I'd like to do it again. I know I'm going to
receive requests for copies from many who
are affected by these issues.
THE MENTAL ELF
When things are at their blackest,
and nothing's going right,
And the goblins come to haunt you
in the wee hours of the night.
When someone who is dear to you
has suffered some dire fate,
Maybe even passed away. That's
when you need a mate.
When you've suffered setback,
in your home life or career,
And you've thought of seeking
solace in the whisky, or the beer.
When your job's been made redundant,
and there's no end to your strife,
And there's nothing left to live
for. No purpose in your life.
That's the time you need one, but
a mate's not always there,
When you're at your lowest ebb,
and needing tender care.
You have no faith in anyone,
least of all yourself -BUT there is someone to help you.
His name is Mental Elf.
He's a funny little fellow, and never far away,
Just waiting for a chance to help
to brighten up your day.
I've met this little Mental Elf,
time and time again,
And he's taken up his domicile
in portion of my brain.

He's my tactical adviser on
how to handle strife,
And I'll admit quite freely: He's
important in my life.
When something's praying on my
mind, I'm tending to despair,
He comes up with some good advice
that helps to clear the air.
My Mental Elf insists that: "It
is dangerous to brood,
Not only is it dangerous, but
people think you're rude."

Phil Garland a regular at the club on his
sometime visits from NZ has been awarded
a QSM (I think it’s Queen’s Service Medal,
the NZ equivalent of tha OAM but they
just can’t get rid of the Queen- they need
a Gough Whitlam) He was awarded it for
services to Folk Music. He sent me a picture
of him getting the medal from the NZ GG.
(he’s the one with the pearls around his
neck.) The only thing folky about Phil is
his fat beardedness- I ask you- a folkie in
a suit and tie- looks more like the CEO of
the ANZ ban!

While on the subject of Janet... Monty the
Scottish Fiddle Player who was famous
for immortalising that Crook, Sir Terrence
Lewis with his tune, ‘Sir Terrence Lewis’s
triumphal march to the walls of Boggo Road
Gaol’ has now immortalised Janet with
a tune. It’s called ‘Janet in the Jailhouse’.
It’s a jig and he launched at the Goulburn
Gathering over the long weekend. I have no
idea what it is all about and I’m not game to
ask but I do have a feeling that it’s a good
thing it doesn’t have words.

While on the subject of poetry I’m very
pleased to report one of our long term and
regular poets Zondrae King cleaned up the
reciters award at Kangaroo Valley with
on of her own compositions, The Hem of
her Apron’- a very moving piece. She now
becomes the judge for next year.

bribe the judge let me know and I’ll put
you in touch and my commission on bribes

Bad news for the boozers.
Our resident ‘mien host’ at the bar at the
festival (and a few other festivals as well)
Janet Barnes is calling it a day and retiring
gracefully (though we hope it may only be
a sabbatical).
Janet has been our bar manager for more
years than I can remember and has managed
a large staff of reprobates and bar flies with
efficiency and tact. She has been the mentor
for large numbers of aspiring young bar
workers who undoubtedly, under Janet’s

poem, have a bite and a drink. Here’s details

By the way if you missed the OF and
GROG night that we had at Wongawilli
where all the performers were over seventy
(septuagenarians) then you were a fool
to yourself and a burden to others. Great
night- we threw away the sound system
and people (Larrikin Bob McInnes, Danny
Spooner, The illawarra Flame Three, The
Night Workers, Roger Montgomery and
the Dingos, John Hall, Garry Tooth, and
I’ve probably missed someone, might have
been Blown Away Denis- but it happens
when you get old) Hardly anyone forgot
their words, there were no bowel accidents
and even a small drizzle of rain couldn’t
dampen the spirits. A big thanks to Tony
Foley for organising booze and tucker and
the Jackos and Dingos for help with the
setting up and staffing the door.

Majors Creek Festival is
back after an absence of 3 years. One of
the friendliest small music festivals on
Australia’s eastern seaboard (previously
Music at the Creek), returns in 2014 after
a three-year break. It will run from 21st
to 23rd November at the Majors Creek
Recreation Ground and is expected to
attract up to 2000 through the gate.
There will be something for everyone, as
usual: superb music, dance, poetry and a
kids’ festival. Emerging young musicians
will share the stage with some of the best
in folk, bluegrass, blues & roots and world
music.
One of the very best is Kristina Olsen from
the USA who will headline the festival
program. And then there is the rising star
singer-songwriter from the NSW south
coast, Heath Cullen, who recently recorded
an album with Elvis Costello’s band
members and is touring with Joe Henry
at present.
Queanbeyan’s own son, Owen Campbell,
is also on the bill – fresh from a long tour
of the US. Owen may be familiar to some
as the controversial young lad who caused
a little displeasure among the judges of
‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2012. Despite that
he went on to be a finalist on the program
and his 2013 album, The Pilgrim debuted
atop the iTunes Blues charts in Australia,
Canada, and New Zealand.

Vincent P Brophy, a former Club president
returned from Melbourne.
Along with Vince a familiar name was
Lindsay Martin with Max Burgess (both
from Cedar Creek) and Liz Spira. I don’t
know if they had a name but the Newsletter
referred to them as Beauty and the Beasts.
The MC was Garry Griffiths, on sound
was John Spillane, at the door was Chris
Cartledge, food was Russell Hannah and
Julie Telenta was on raffle.
Then on the 17th we had Trevor Knight who
was a good friend of John Denver and a
regular on the Today show. He now resides
at Buladeelah and is still running concerts
there. (Must get him down again.)
Supporting Trevor was the Hot Foot String
Band from Mount Kembla who were a local
Bluegrass group. (Can’t remember who
was in it. Let me know if you know anyone
who knows.)
Barry Spooner was on setting up, Chris
Cartledge on sound, Cheryl O’Brien on
the door and Jo and Joyce Harkness on
the door.
The Wongawilli Bush Band was performing
at a St Andrews Day Bash at the Shellharbour
Bowling Club, where people wearing kilts
in the traditional manner were admitted
for free.
The Club was looking for a knickers
inspector to check them as they came in!

We don’t have any books no more,
Just Kindles, they’re the rage,
She says reading books is tiresome
, For you have to turn a page.
When she sees me read the paper,
And sees me post a letter,
She says, I am a Luddite,
As there’s ways that are much better.
She said I should try I-Pods
And this verse I should e-mail ya
She’s embarrassed that she’s
married to an electronic failure.
We were sitting in our sunroom
I think she was on Twitter
I said please pass the folk newsletter
dear, I thought I heard her titter.
She looked at me with a silly grin

passé, Here try my new I-Pad.”
I reached and took the I-Pad I
still knew I had to ‘git ‘im’,
