Kappeli’s atmospheric cellar area caters for festive events for groups of 20 to 150 guests. With its vaulted ceilings, intimate lighting, large wood-burning fireplace and old murals dating back more than 100 years, Kappelin Kellari sets a perfect backdrop for a memorable occasion. Prohibition hit Finland in 1919, banning the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. During the 13-year ordeal, however, Kappeli’s cellar housed a much-frequented speakeasy that served up “hard tea” (half tea, half spirit) to its thirsty patrons – artists, among others. When all tapped out, some of the artists would pay their billsby doing paintings directly on the walls. Their works still adorn the walls of the cellar today.
