Mt Oko Historical Park consists
of the Oko Castle Ruins built by
Chosokabe Motochika, one of the
strongest powers in Shikoku during
the Warring States period (15th to
16th centuries). The ancient castle
structures such as foundation
stones, mounds, and stoneworks have been
restored, and a typical residential house in
the mountain village (former house of the
Mimoto Family) has been removed from its
original site (Tsuno-cho, Takaoka-gun) and
rebuilt here. In the park, various kinds of
flowers including cherry blossoms will delight
visitors all year round.

The Kochi Prefectural Museum of History has been treasured by a
large number of people since its opening in May 1991. The museum
has been collecting, preserving and investigating documents and
objects in a variety of areas including prefectural history, archaeology
and folklore. It has published its accomplishments widely by means of
exhibitions, lectures, talk sessions, children’s classrooms, catalogs,
and research bulletins. The building is located on Mount Oko by
the Oko Castle Ruins (a National historical site) where forces of the
Chosokabe clan once resided during the Warring States period (15th to
16th centuries). The mountain has now been turned into a park where
people can stroll leisurely whilst learning about the history of the place.
In April 2010, to accommodate our new findings, we conducted an
extensive renewal of the displays for our permanent exhibition to make
it more flexible and approachable for visitors. Furthermore, as the
location of the museum is associated with the Chosokabe clan, we set
up a dedicated exhibition space to display the documents and objects
regarding the Chosokabe clan and the Oko Castle Ruins.
We hope that the museum can provide a good opportunity for
visitors to learn about the region’s history, to meet other people, and
serve as a stepping stone to the development for a better future.

By Kochiken Kotsu bus: Take the bus bound for Kochi Prefectural Museum of
History, get off at the last stop (runs three times a day)
: Take a bus for Ryoseki, Naro or Tai (runs 1~2 times per
hour) and get off at Gakko-bunki Stop (entrance of the
museum). Approx. 10 min. by foot from there.

Documents and objects regarding the Chosokabe clan and

camp of the Chosokabe clan at the battle of Nakatomigawa
(1582) is reconstructed in the center of the room so viewers
